Gary Lee Miller, age 76, formerly of Marengo, passed away, Sunday, November 2, 2014 in Davenport, Iowa. Visitation: 3 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, November 5, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, in Marengo. Private funeral services and burial will be on Thursday, November 6, 2014.
Gary was born March 12, 1938 in Keystone, Iowa, the son of Waldo and Irene Selk Miller. He spent his childhood in Benton and Iowa counties, and graduated from Marengo High School with the Class of 1956. Following graduation, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served on the USS Cape Esperance as a radio operator. This ship transported new combat-ready aircraft as well as personnel to strategic locations in the Pacific, including the Philippines, Ulithi, Guam, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and the larger islands of Japan. After his honorable discharge, Gary returned to Marengo. Gary and Mary D. Vogt were united in marriage in 1961. He worked for many years at Link Belt Speeder in Cedar Rapids and later for Picwick Manufacturing, also in Cedar Rapids, where he made many lifelong friendships.
Gary enjoyed turkey and deer hunting, fishing and gardening. He was an avid rolle bolle player, and enjoyed team bolle, and the tournaments in Koszta and other locations.
Survivors include Mary D. Miller, their children, Susan Miller of Westminster, CO, and Teresa Miller Kaszinski and husband Dave of Davenport; a sister Dianne Miller Patterson of Marengo; brothers-in-law Martin Tompkins, of Cedar Rapids, and John Vogt and wife Carol Ann of Marengo; nephews, Rick Miller, Jon Miller, Tim Patterson, Doug Tompkins, Kevin Vogt; and nieces Sherri Miller, Tammy Rinderknecht, Deb Tompkins, Kathy Brecht and Connie Gougler.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Warren “Tex” Miller, a sister Judy Miller Tompkins, a sister-in-law, Joan Stumpff Miller and nephews, Michael Tompkins and Christopher Vogt.
Memorials may be contributed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, Iowa Valley School District Foundation, Safe Haven of Iowa County, the Alzheimer’s Association, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Duane W. Stohlmann, age 69, of Williamsburg, died suddenly on Saturday, November 1, 2014. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Friday, November 7, 2014, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg, with Rev. Gary Sears officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, November 6, 2014, at St. Paul Lutheran Fellowship Hall, Williamsburg. Memorials may be contributed to St. Paul Lutheran Church. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Duane is survived by his wife Jane; two sons, Douglas and wife Mary of San Antonio, TX, and Joel and wife Jessica of Marengo; six grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, Matthew and Jessica, and Elizabeth and Evan; and a sister Marna Durr and husband Steve of Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son Paul in infancy.
Duane Waldo Stohlmann was born February 11, 1945 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Waldo and Alma Schmidt Stohlmann. His early education was received at the Hilton School in Conroy, and he graduated from Williamsburg High School with the Class of 1963. Duane served with the Iowa National Guard for a time. He and Jane Clark were united in marriage on May 7, 1967 in Casey, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Williamsburg area for many years. Duane also worked with the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Iowa County Road Department. He was a very active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church during his lifetime. Being concerned with the Iowa prairieland, Duane was a member of the Integrated Roadside Vegetative Management organization.

Diane Leona Goodlow, age 54 of Brooklyn, died suddenly on Tuesday, October 21, 2014. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, October 25, 2014, First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn, with Rev. John Reynolds, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery, Brooklyn, Iowa. Visitation: 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, October 24, 2014, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Memorials may be contributed to the BGM Citizens Scholarship Fund, or the First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn.
Diane is survived by her mother, Marilyn Goodlow of Brooklyn; her siblings, Krista Humphrey of Brooklyn, Steven Goodlow (Leslie) of Albia, and Mari Lenius (Bill) of Atlanta, GA; special friends, Linda “Herky” Maschmann of Brooklyn and Karin “Cy” Winwood of Williamsburg; nieces and nephews, Joshua (Heather) Humphrey of Millersburg, Megan (Andy) Vajgrt of Williamsburg, Elza and Edison Goodlow of Albia, and Erin Diane, Emily and Reagan Lenius of Atlanta, GA; and great-niece and nephews, Rebecca, Mason, and Baby Vajgrt on the way, of Williamsburg.
Diane was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Vesta and Leona Johnston, paternal grandparents, Elza and Alice Goodlow, and a brother-in-law Larry Humphrey.
Diane Leona Goodlow was born July 7, 1960 in Grinnell, Iowa. She graduated from BGM High School with the Class of 1978, and worked as station manager of the Star Inn. She received her accounting degree in 1990 from the University of Iowa. Diane was employed with Marengo Publishing Corporation since February of 1991. She was currently the general manager of Marengo Publishing and Poweshiek Publications.
Diane was a very loyal and avid Hawkeye fan. She was president of the 5:01 Club. She also enjoyed the Chicago Cubs. Most of all Diane cherished and loved her family and friends, and spending time with them. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn, the I-Club, and the University of Iowa Alumni Association.

Ina Gail Hadenfeldt, age 94 of Marengo, died Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at her home. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Friday, October 24, 2014, First United Methodist Church, Marengo, with Rev. Matt German officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 6 P.M. Thursday, October 23, 2014, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo.
Gail is survived by two sons, Jerry (Shirley) of Clive, and John of East Prairie, MO; two daughters, Janet Gardner (Dale) of Marion, and Judy Button (Denny) of Waverly; eleven grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband LeRoy in 1975, and two brothers, J. and Dean Stockton.
Ina Gail Stockton was born November 8, 1919 in Leroy, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Mae Bahr Stockton. She received her education in the country schools, and graduated from Marengo High School. After completing her education, Gail was a teacher in the country schools for several years. She married LeRoy Hadenfeldt on March 9, 1940. Besides being a wife, mother, and homemaker, she was bookkeeper for the Standard Oil Bulk Tank Service that LeRoy operated.
Gail was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marengo, the Marengo Legion Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star. She served her community, working at the voting stations during election times. She also was a chaperone for women prisoners during transfers from one facility to another.
Gail also enjoyed her free time. She and LeRoy loved to go dancing. She was an avid Hawkeye fan, attending many games with her friends. She looked forward to “Bunco” nights, and especially spending time with the family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Frieda S. Kofron, age 95 of Amana, formerly of Homestead, died Monday, October 20, 2014 at Colonial Manor of Amana, following a brief illness. A Graveside Service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at the Homestead Cemetery, Homestead, Iowa. Harold Pitz, Elder of the Amana Church will officiate. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be contributed to Essence of Life Hospice, Amana. Condolences may be sent to her sister Jane Dietrich, in care of Colonial Manor of Amana.
Frieda is survived by her sister Jane Dietrich of Amana, nieces and nephews, Sonia Harms of Dallas, TX, Carolyn Chambers of Phoenix, AZ, Angela Renaud of Phoenix, AZ, and Wayne Dietrich of Forsyth, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Richard Kofron in 1994.
Frieda S. Dietrich was born June 19, 1919 in Homestead, Iowa, the daughter of John Dietrich Jr. and Caroline Fels Dietrich. She graduated from Amana High School in 1937 and married Richard L. Kofron on November 14, 1941 in Lancaster, Missouri. The couple lived in Aurora, IL for a time. They returned to Iowa and built a home in Homestead. Frieda worked at the I-80 Amana Store for a number of years. She will be remembered for her positive outlook, friendly smile, and numerous acts of kindness.
The family would like to thank Essence of Life Hospice, and the staff of Colonial Manor for the compassion and care they gave Frieda. Also a heartfelt thank you to Frieda’s special friend, Linda Ackerman.

Linda Freida Graesser Selzer, age 98, formerly of Homestead, passed away peacefully, to live with her Lord, on Friday, October 17, 2014, at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, October 21, 2014, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Inurnment will be in the Homestead Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, October 20, 2014, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Linda is survived by her two children, Lial (Helen) Selzer of Homestead, and Marian Carew (Dan) of Dallas, TX; four grandchildren, Scott Selzer of Homestead, Neil Selzer (Rebecca) of Verona, WI, Alisa Hartman (Doug) of Gold Canyon, AZ, and Stephanie Vasso (Neal) of Tyler, TX; and 8 great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Aidan Selzer, Brooke and Zack Hartman, and Jake, Zeph, Garrett, and Nick Vasso.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George on Feb. 14, 1995, and her siblings, Helene Wolf, Fred Graesser, Richard Graesser, and Lily Jones.
Linda was born May 1, 1916 in West Amana, Iowa, the daughter of William and Lina Griess Graesser. She grew up during the era of the Amana Colonies communal system. Her home was a community kitchen where her mother was the “kuchen boss.” Linda attended the Amana schools and helped her mother in the kitchen slicing and dicing, cooking and serving many meals a day. This was where her passions for cooking and intricate baking were born. Following her education in Amana, she attended Paris Beauty Academy in Cedar Rapids and became a beautician during the popularity of the marcel wave. She returned to the Colonies and set up a beauty shop in the Colony Inn. Linda and George Selzer were united in marriage at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, Iowa on July 17, 1935. The couple settled in Homestead where they raised their family. For many years, she worked at the Homestead General Store, buying dry goods and gifts to sell to the surrounding area residents and to tourists. Shoppers would often request her to hand dip their ice cream cones, as her portions were most generous at 5 cents per dip.
For the past 40 plus years, she and George had a second home in Phoenix, AZ, where they spent their winters, returning to Iowa for the summers.
Prior to her illness, Linda lived a full, healthy life. She was active in various organizations and clubs, both in Arizona and Iowa. Being a devout Christian, in recent years her activities centered around her church families, St. John’s in Marengo and St. Mark’s in Phoenix. Her passion throughout her life was art, as was illustrated in her oil paintings, china painting, sewing, quilting, knitting, gardening and food presentation. Everything she did was done with an artistic flair. She was known for her cakes and won several awards and ribbons with her famous marble and walnut cakes. At the age of 80 she wrote a cookbook “Oma’s Family Secrets, ” all handwritten in calligraphy, which is sold in various Amana shops.
Linda took great pride in her family and will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She delighted in the gathering of family and friends, loved people, and was the ultimate hostess, cooking and entertaining throughout her life.
At age 93, her health started to decline and she moved to Colonial Manor in Middle Amana where she remained until her passing.
The family expresses sincere appreciation to the caregivers and staff at Colonial Manor that cared for her with love and affection.

Dean Rodgers, age 85, of Marengo, Iowa, died Sunday, September 21, 2014 at his home. Memorial Service: 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 29, 2014, First United Methodist Church, Marengo, with Rev. Matt German officiating. Military Honors will follow the service at the church. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Private Family Inurnment services will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established.
Dean is survived by his wife Marilyn; a daughter Lynn Rodgers of Columbia, MO; a son Robert of New Jersey; a brother Sam of Ottumwa; and four sisters, Lorene Meek of Tama, Louise Danner and Florence Ruff, both of Marshalltown, and Arlene Strennan of Des Moines; as well as many nieces and nephews. Also mourning his passing are special friends: Lynn Stauffer and Greg Stauffer of Brooklyn; Mark, Jennifer, and Ayden Austin of Bondurant; and Caleb Kriegel and Kristen Stauffer of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James “Mac” and C. Douglas; two sisters, Betty Catherman and Lucile Fiser; nephews, Harold Meek, Paul Joseph Strennan, Jody Danner, Dennis Fiser, and Jon Rodgers; nieces, Linda Kay Rodgers and Darlene Dufek; and several brothers and sisters in law.
Dean Rodgers was born July 9, 1929 to Sam and Bertie Myatt Rodgers in rural Poweshiek County, Iowa. He was the youngest son in a family of ten children. As tenant farmers, the family moved often and Dean attended the rural schools of both Poweshiek and Iowa Counties. He entered Marengo High School. When his parents moved to a farm near Millersburg, Dean returned to Marengo, boarding with Milton and Vivian Brown to complete his education and graduate from Marengo High School in 1947.
Following graduation, Dean worked for Pioneer Seed at Marengo and Thorp Well Drilling before taking employment at Amana Refrigeration. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and took his basic training in Georgia and then went to New Jersey for Signal Corp Training, graduating from there in September 1952. Dean then went to Korea where he served until June 1953. He returned to Marengo in July 1953, and resumed his employment with Amana Refrigeration, as a Compressor Analysis Technician and then a toolmaker. Dean retired in 1991.
In December 1953, Dean married Joan Morrell in New Jersey and the couple settled in Marengo where a son Robert was born. The couple later divorced. Dean was united in marriage to Marilyn Harryman in July 1961 at Milton, Iowa. To this union, a daughter Lynn was born. The family resided in Marengo.
Dean was a 60-year member of the Marengo American Legion Post 76. He enjoyed woodworking, and built many pieces of furniture. He loved working in his yard and garden. He read extensively (particularly history and science) and delved deeply in to the histories of World War II and Korea, as well as the Civil War.

Kevin D. Smith, age 55 of Brooklyn, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 16, 2014 in Mount Vernon, Washington. There will be visitation from 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, September 25, 2014, at Kloster Funeral Home, in Brooklyn. Private graveside services and inurnment will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery, Brooklyn, Iowa. . In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Kevin Dale Smith was born September 5, 1959 in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Dale P. Smith and Madonna J. Roberts Smith. He graduated from BGM High School with the Class of 1978 and was employed as a truck driver with Berch Cabinets.
He loved farming. Most of his free time was spent having a GREAT time with his family, grandchildren, and countless friends. Camping was also a favorite hobby.
Kevin is survived by his sons, Craig and Luke, his daughter Krystal, and two grandchildren, Boston and Quincie, all of Brooklyn. His mother Madonna Smith of Brooklyn, and his sister Diane VanErsvelde of North Liberty also survive.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dale, a sister Kathleen Smith, maternal grandparents, Doc and Melissa Roberts, and paternal grandparents, Phillip and Mildred Smith.
