HAROLD RAYMOND “Pee Wee” MOHR, age 92 of Brooklyn, died Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center, Grinnell, Iowa. Memorial Service: 1:00 P.M. Monday, February 2, 2015, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn with Rev. John Reynolds, Jr. officiating. Inurnment will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends on Monday, February 2, from 12:00 noon until service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be contributed to the American Legion or the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his son Charles (Teresa) of Spencer; his daughter Patty Flander of What Cheer; six grandchildren, Brian (Tiffany) Mohr, Mark (Michelle) Mohr, Michael (Alicia) Mohr, DeAnn McGinnis, Neal (Kristin) Flander and Eric (Michelle) Flander; twelve great-grandchildren, Chloe Mohr, Alyssa Simpson, Emerson Mohr, Aubrey Mohr, Ashlyn Mohr, Autumn Mohr, Maddex Mohr, Jacob McGinnis, Nathan McGinnis, Beau Flander, Ben Flander and Brodey Flander; a great-great-grandchild, Carson Mears; a brother Howard Mohr of Williamsburg; and a nephew Bobby Mohr.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Maxine in 2007, a son-in-law John Flander, a sister-in-law Jean Mohr, a niece Janie Mohr, and a nephew Tom Mohr.
Harold Raymond Mohr was born January 2, 1923 on the family farm in Poweshiek County, near Victor, Iowa, the son of Everett and Mary Paeper Mohr. He attended the Guernsey school and then completed his education in Victor. Harold helped his father in the trucking business. He and Maxine Fern Bolen were married on January 23, 1943 at the Presbyterian parsonage in Brooklyn. He then entered the U.S. Navy, serving 3 years during World War II. Upon his return, Harold and his wife Maxine operated the Mohr’s Café, in downtown Brooklyn. He later was employed at the post office, worked at the Poweshiek County Shop, and drove a tank wagon for Poweshiek Jasper Farm Services for 30 years. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 294, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn. Being a very patriotic person, Harold displayed the American flag at all times.
Harold’s greatest joy was his family. He enjoyed attending all the activities of his children and grandchildren, including the high school and college events. He liked to play cards and golf. He also enjoyed watching dirt track racing, especially when his grandson Eric was competing. Harold lived his life to the fullest. He never knew a stranger, and had no difficulty making conversation and joking with his family and many friends. He was the “Coolest Grandpa Ever!”
Maxine Pearl Vercande, age 93 of Brooklyn, Iowa died Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Brooklyn Community Estate. Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, January 31, 2015, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn, with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, January 30, 2015, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Memorials may be contributed to P.A.L.S. (Poweshiek Animal League Shelter).
Maxine is survived by her sons, Dennis, and Ronald (Javerne), both of Brooklyn; grandchildren, Jessi Patterson (Dallas) of Willard, MO, Diana Lindquist of Gilbertville, Jenni Vercande of Cedar Rapids, and Dustin Vercande (Erin) of Decorah; six great-grandchildren: Kegan Patterson, Sydni Patterson, Jake Lindquist, Sawyer Vercande, Cashton Vercande, and Jacques Robinson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lawrence in 2008, three brothers, Harold, Frank and Albert, and a sister Lois Gross.
Maxine Pearl Kann was born October 17, 1921 in Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of William and Maud Robey Kann. She graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1938, and worked at Neff’s Café for several years. Maxine and Lawrence “Pat” Vercande were wed on February 18, 1946 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn. The couple farmed southeast of Brooklyn for many years. Maxine also was a Home Interiors representative. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn, and the Neighbor Betterment Club. She loved her pets, the cats, dogs and fish, and especially exotic birds. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and was interested in all their activities.
John M. Barrick, Sr., age 77 of Atlantic, Iowa, formerly of Marengo, died Sunday, January 25, 2015 in Atlantic. Funeral Services and Interment: 12:30 P.M. Friday, January 30, 2015, Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery and Chapel, Adel, Iowa. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, January 29, 2015, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established.
John is survived by his sons, John, Jr. of Marengo, and Geoff (Barbara) of Atlantic; seven grandchildren, Ambri Refer of Cedar Falls, Seth Refer (Kelsey) of Oskaloosa, Sarah and Erin Barrick, both of Atlantic, Jesse Barrick of Marengo, John Barrick III of Marengo, and Emma DeLong of Kansas City; a sister Nora Beth Ledbetter (Howard) of Fall Branch, TN; and his former wife, Shloe Floerke-Flanagan of Joplin, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his longtime companion, Susan DeLong.
John Milford Barrick was born March 17, 1937 in Shannon, Texas, the son of Ardyce and Margie Castleberry Barrick. His childhood took him to Texas, Arizona, Arkansas and Kansas, graduating with the class of 1955 at Rosedale High School in Kansas City, KS, and later studying at the Far Eastern Division of the University of Maryland. Beginning in 1960, John Served in the U.S. Army, becoming a member of the Army Security Agency, after which he was stationed in Okinawa and Taiwan. From 1965 to 1967, he served as an instructor at the Army Security Agency school at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. He returned to Kansas City in 1967, where he was employed in sales and management with Rivard Sales Company and then Central Plumbing Supply. Lastly he worked for Penske Logistics. John was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church where he served a term as president of the PTA, and was later a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. He moved to Marengo in 2010 to be close to his family, and in 2013 to Atlantic, where he resided at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center until his death.
John was an avid reader and loved jazz. He also enjoyed bowling, at which he recorded several perfect games.
James D. Martens, age 94, of Marengo, formerly of Conroy, died Monday, January 19, 2015 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A Memorial Service will follow at 7:00 P.M. with Rev. Don Dovre officiating, with VFW service after. Private Inurnment: First Lutheran Cemetery, rural Conroy. A memorial fund has been established.
James Donald Martens was born October 31, 1920 in Hamilton County, Iowa, the eldest child of Elmer K. and Desse G. Engelbert Martens. Early in his life, the family moved to his mother’s farmstead west of Conroy, Iowa, where James completed his education at the Conroy Hilton High School in 1939.
He answered his country’s call, entered the U.S. Army, and served overseas during World War II, stationed in Germany and Italy. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. James was a proud veteran and was a life member and past Commander of V.F.W. Post 8797 and a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 228, both of Williamsburg.
After the death of his father, Jim took over the family farming and trucking business, hauling livestock, rock, lime and liquid fertilizer for over 55 years. He was active in the community, serving 27 years on the board of directors of the Conroy Farmers Co-op, 20 years on the Iowa County REIC Board, and was one of the original officers of the Conroy Service Company. He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg. His hobbies included working with wood, golfing, and tinkering with older Harley Davidson golf carts. He also enjoyed playing cards.
On one of his many pleasure trips to Cedar Rapids, Jim met the love of his life and future bride at the then famous Danceland Ballroom. Jim and Helen Bevins were wed on April 6, 1948 at Van Horne, Iowa. They were blessed with 58 years together until her passing in 2006.
Jim is survived by his sons, Dale and wife Carolyn, and Richard and wife Kathy, all of Conroy; three grandchildren, Brad, Ryan, and Jenna Martens; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Also surviving are sisters, Ethel Cook of California, and Vera Bowman of Williamsburg, and two sisters-in-law, Patricia Martens of Williamsburg, and Eileen Bevins of Van Horne. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Helen, a sister Esther Folkmann, a brother Robert Martens, four brothers-in-law, and three nephews.
Merita Fay Brecht, age 77, of Marengo, died Friday, January 16, 2015, at Windmill Manor in Coralville, Iowa. Funeral Service; will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 19, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, Iowa with Pastor Andrew Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation; will be 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Sunday, January 18, 2015 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by three daughters, Becky Brecht of Marengo, Bonnie Nicely (Randy VonLienen) of Homestead, and Brenda Stratton (Mike) of Homestead; a son Russell Brecht of Marengo; nine grandchildren, Eric Brecht, Alicia Claypool (Garyn), Danielle Henre (Michael II), Roy Brecht, Tyler Brecht, Jason Stratton, Bruce Brecht, Kyia Jo Brecht and Kelsie Eckhardt; and 15 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings Merle Martens (Arlet) of West Des Moines, Oris Martens (Betty) of West Amana, and Frederick Martens of Coralville; and foster daughters Irene (Joe) Matthess and family of Marengo, and Tanya Jackson of Fort Worth, Texas, along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dean in 1990, a sister Eulalia Garrett-Bates, and a niece, Deb Gregory.
Merita Fay Martens was born August 6, 1937 in rural Guernsey, Iowa, the daughter of George and Lilia Bayer Martens. She received her education in the Deep River Schools and graduated from Amana High School in 1956. She married Dean Russell Brecht on August 11, 1956 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, Iowa.
Over the years Merita owned and operated the D & M Café, Marengo Café, Marengo Pizza Company, and managed the Senior Dining Center. She also operated child and foster care, and assisted her husband and son at the Marengo Service Center. Merita was instrumental in organizing the Marengo Farm-City Banquet and hosted it for many, many years. She was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and enjoyed crafts and painting. In earlier years, she taught Sunday School at St. John’s Lutheran Church where she was a member. Merita especially enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren and thoroughly loved retirement.
Robert Charles “Bob” Scoville, age 75 of Williamsburg, died Sunday, January 11, 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 17, 2015, Millersburg Methodist Church, Millersburg, with Pastor Michelle Williamson officiating. Burial will be in the Millersburg Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, January 16, 2015, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the Millersburg Methodist Church.
Robert Charles Scoville was born January 13, 1939, in Kellogg, Iowa, the son of Mark and Zeta Pearce Scoville. He was the last child born on the family farmstead. Robert was raised on a farm in Page County, Iowa and attended school in College Springs. He attended Clarinda Junior College for two years. Following graduation and the death of his mother, he worked for two years to pay off his mother’s doctor and hospital bills. Bob then attended Iowa State and graduated with a BS degree in Animal Science. The next six months were spent on active duty with the National Guard.
For thirty years Bob was employed by FmHA. He started as Assistant County Supervisor in Van Buren County in 1965 and was promoted to Supervisor in 1966. In 1979 he became an Assistant District Director in Williamsburg, and in 1988 he was promoted to District Director at Tipton. When reorganization came along in 1995, he had the opportunity to join FSA as a District Director. In December 1997, he retired from FSA and worked at Keystone Bank in Marengo from 1997 to 2011.
Bob and Joann Frey were married on July 15, 1972 in Warsaw, Illinois, and lived on a farm in Birmingham, Iowa, before moving to Williamsburg in 1979. They lived on a farm in Iowa County where over the years, Bob raised crops, hay, cattle and took care of horses for son Ben and wife Joann. Bob was active in Millersburg United Methodist Church, especially as Financial Secretary. He also was involved in community affairs, which included serving on the Williamsburg School Board from 1981 – 1993. He belonged to the Marengo Kiwanis, worked with 4-H serving as a Cattle Superintendent and on the county 4-H Foundation. In 2003 Bob and his wife were awarded Iowa County 4-H Honorary Members and joined the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. Bob believed strongly in the importance of education and in 1996, he began presenting a scholarship to a graduating senior at Williamsburg High School in memory of his son Dustin. When Bob retired from Keystone Bank, the bank honored him by setting up the Robert Scoville Scholarship to be given annually to an Iowa Valley student going into Business, Agriculture, or Education.
Conserving land and water was very important to Bob. In 1995, he received the following awards from Soil and Water Conservation: the “Iowa County New Cooperator” Division in 1995, and in 2005 the “Livestock Management” Division. In 2012 Bob was elected to serve on NRCS.
In addition to spending time with his family, Bob enjoyed activities with the neighborhood group, traveling with his wife (he especially enjoyed taking steamboat trips, touring Civil War battle areas and Amtrak trips), going to the Denver Stock Show, and going to bowl games and tournaments of his favorite ISU teams.
Bob is survived by his wife, Joann; his son Robert “Ben”; a daughter-in-law, Heather, two grandsons, Bennett and Bobby, and three sisters, Dorothy Chase, Dixie Allbery and Betty Peterson. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Bill, and a son Dustin.
Ferne I. Cline, age 95 of Brooklyn, died Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell. Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 14, 2015, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. Visitation: 4 to 7:30 P.M. Tuesday, January 13, 2015, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, with a Scripture Service at 7:30 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
Ferne is survived by her children, Patricia Miles (Dennis) of Atkins, Larrry Cline of Brooklyn, George Cline (Jane) of Brooklyn, and Brenda Cline (Scott Johnson) of Grinnell; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother Glenn Smith (Joanne) of Waukee and a sister Arlene Wilcox (Wayne) of Tama. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Francis, a daughter Elizabeth Rhinehart, and a sister Ruth Cline.
Ferne Irene Smith was born November 11, 1919 in rural Iowa, on the Tama Poweshiek county line, the daughter of Glenn and Stella Mochal Smith. She received her education in the Tama County schools and married Francis Lloyd Cline on January 29, 1941 in Tama, Iowa. The couple were life long farmers. Ferne was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn, and the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed playing cards and belonged to a local card club.
Joshua Aaron Cuno, age 32 of Homestead, Iowa, died Thursday, January 8, 2015 at his home. Memorial Service: 1 P.M. Tuesday, January 13, 2015, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Donna Cuno officiating. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his mother, Pamela Ann Bern and husband Bob of Amana, his father, Jessie Cuno and wife Donna of Tennessee, and his girlfriend, Kristin Ackerman and her daughter Jasmine.
Joshua was born September 22, 1982 in Iowa City, Iowa. He graduated from Clear Creek Amana High School in 2001, and attended Hamilton College, and Kirkwood College. He had worked as a cook at various restaurants in the area. Josh was interested in the weather. He enjoyed tracking it from his weather station for many years. He also loved working on computers, and traveling throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and Canada. He also enjoyed cooking.
