Alberta Toops, 75, of 505 W. First Ave., Monmouth, died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, November 28, 1998, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Born September 6, 1923, in Swan Creek to Albert and Iva Hale Day, she married
Weldon 'Buck' Toops on June 27, 1942, in Kahoka, Mo. He survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Ed (Welda) Raes and Mrs. John (Carol) Lybarger, both of Monmouth, Mrs. Ken (Sandy) Denny of East Galesburg and Mrs. Lewis (Mary) Bloesing of Surry, W. Virginia; one son, David of Hazel Green, Alabama; three brothers, Ernest Day of Abingdon, Albert Day Jr. of Watseka and Edward Day of Monmouth; two sisters, Jessie Shook of Waukegan and Marjorie Murphy of Grayslake; 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Two grandchildren and two brothers preceded her in death. She worked for the former Benner Tea Company in Monmouth for many years. She was a member of Little York United Methodist Church. Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth with Rev. David Hultberg officiating. Burial was in Warren County Memorial Park cemetery. Raymond Pippitt
Raymond L. Pippitt, age 82, of London Mills, died at 11:42 a.m. Saturday, November 28, 1998, at Farmington Center in Farmington. Born May 27, 1916, in Ellisville to John L. and Sylvia Alpaugh Pippitt, he married
LaNorma Terwilliger on December 5, 1940, in Iowa. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Sylvia Shawgo of Farmington and Debbie Martin of London Mills; two sisters, Alberta Bennett of Canton and Madlyn Neil of Richland, Washington; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. One brother and two grandchildren preceded him in death. He was a World War II Army Air Force veteran. He retired from Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at London Mills United Methodist Church with Rev. Rick Kerr officiating. Burial was in Abingdon cemetery in Abingdon where military rites were conducted by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post 381. Corman Memorial Home in London Mills was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to London Mills United Methodist Church.
Carl L. Whitenack
Carl L. Whitenack, 76, St. Augustine, passed away at 1:21 a.m. Tuesday, November 24, 1998, at his home. Born April 5, 1922, in Galesburg to Samuel and Louise Canfield Whitenack, he married
Juanita Long in 1957. He later married
Loy Lea Bacon who preceded him in death. He married
Louise Kilburn in 1997. She survives. Also surviving are four stepsons, Larry Long, Paulina, IA, Greg Bacon and Gary Bacon, both of Galesburg and Clifford L. Dixon, Brentwood, TN; three stepdaughters, Sharon Herren, Memphis, TN, Paulette Alwine, York, PA, and Mary Gosnell, Spring Valley, IL; several grandchildren; one brother Robert Whitenack, Abingdon; two sisters, Elizabeth Mitezel, Naples, FL and Gladys Barstow, Grand Junction, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents, one wife, five brothers, and two sisters. He graduated from Avon High School. He was employed at Gale Products for 11 years and farmed for 50 years in the St. Augustine area. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran of WWII. He was a member of Abingdon Christian Church, Avon Lions Club, Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post 381 in Abingdon, 40X8 in Galesburg, VFW Post 1422 in Galesburg, and Fulton County Farm Bureau. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 28, at the Avon cemetery with the Rev. Raymond G. McLaren officiating. Military rites were conducted by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post 381 at the graveside. Memorials may be made to the Abingdon Christian Church; Community Hospices of America; Abingdon American Legion Post 381 or the Avon Lions Club.
Darryl 'Rex' Landon
Darryl 'Rex' Landon, age 63, of Tracy, California died on November 23, 1998 at Sutter Hospital in Tracy, California. He was born in Abingdon on August 28, 1935. He and his wife, Judy Ann Landon had been married
for 41 years. Surviving are two daughters, Connie Day, Lathrop, California and Sandi Collins, Sacramento, California; one son, Donald Landon, Tracy, California; two brothers, Clyde Landon, Galesburg and Carl Landon, Abingdon; five sisters, Nellie Landon, Georgia Davis and Norma Roberts, all of Galesburg; Clara Gilbert, Abingdon and Grace Maginson, Ontario, California; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He had lived in Tracy, California for 27 years and also lived all over the world while serving with the Air Force. He was a mechanic at Owens Brockway. He was a member of the Air Force Society. He enjoyed his computer and loved to go fishing. He also loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather, and friend. He was a proud veteran. He was retired from the Air Force. Funeral services were held November 27 at the Fry Memorial Chapel. Private burial will be at a later date.
James L. Bryan
James L. Bryan, 80, of Bushnell died at 8:10 p.m., Thursday, November 26, 1998, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. He was born June 16, 1918, In Bushnell to Andrew Lare and Hattie Pearl James Bryan. Surviving are one brother, Dean of Knoxville; and three nephews, Sherwood of Prophetstown, Gary of Knoxville, and James of Indianapolis, IN. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. He was a World War U Army Air Forces veteran. He also was a prisoner of war In Germany. He worked as a diesel engineer for the municipal light plant in Bushnell. Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Corman Memorial Home in Avon. Burial will be In the Avon cemetery where military rites will be performed by the Bushnell VFW.
Albert Edward Anderson
Albert 'Andy' Edward Anderson, age 74, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 3:26 a.m. Friday, November 6, 1998 at the Burlington Medical Center in Burlington, Iowa. He was born April 27, 1924 at Roseville, Illinois the son of Frank and Jessie Edwards Anderson. He married
Joyce McBride in 1949 and they were later divorced. He later married
Patricia Denniston Humes on August 24, 1968. Survivors include his wife Patricia D. Anderson, Burlington, Iowa; one son C. Michael (Susan) Anderson, Alexis, IL; one daughter, Janet (Jack) Bush, AR; one stepson Michael Humes, Redmond WA; one brother, F. Dale Anderson, Stronghurst, Illinois; one sister, Martha Albaugh, Placentia CA; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. He worked at Bennett and Dooley Furniture then IAAP from 1966 until he retired in 1980. He graduated from Biggsville, Illinois High School and Chicago Technical College. He was a member of the Oak Street Baptist Church. He served in World War II in the Air Corps as a pilot. He later served as an officer in the National Guard and US Army Reserves. Funeral services were held Tuesday November 10 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lunning Chapel in Burlington, Iowa with Reverend Ron Presley officiating. Burial was in the Aspen Grove cemetery, Burlington. A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society and the American Lung Association.
Grace Barkley
Grace Ellen Barkley, age 89, formerly of London Mills, died at 8:25 a.m. Monday, November 9, 1998, at Farmington Center in Farmington. Born March 3, 1909, near Rapatee to George and Nellie Yeoman Tasker, she married
Paul Eugene Barkley on June 4, 1930, in Lewistown. He survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jerry of London Mills and Larry of Prairie du Rocher, two daughters, Phyllis Terwilliger of Avon and Alice Urish of Glasford; one brother, James Tasker of Knoxville; nine grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. Three sisters preceded her in death. She was a farmer near London Mills for the past 50 years. She was a member of the Mother’s of World War II and London Mills Senior Citizens group. Graveside services will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Maquon cemetery in Maquon with Rev. David Lindemer officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Corman Memorial Home, London Mills. Memorials may be made to London Mills Ambulance Service.
Marcellus M. Wilkins
Marcellus M. 'Bud' Wilkins, 77, of 489 W. First St. died Thursday, November 5 1998, at Rosewood Care Center. He was born Sept. 13, 1921 In Fowler to James and Florence Miller Wilkins. Surviving is one brother, the Rev. Norman Wilkins of Galesburg. One brother and four sisters preceded him In death. He worked at the former Custer Hotel for 17 years, retiring in 1972. He was a member of Allen Chapel AME Church, where he served on the steward board and was president of the Good Will Singers. Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Hinchliff-Pearson West Galesburg Chapel with the Rev. Derek Bastian officiating. Burial will be in East Linwood cemetery. Memorials may be made to Allen Chapel AME Church.
Connie Chenoweth
Connie Jean Kendrick Chenoweth, 52, Table Grove, passed away at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at her home. Born April 21, 1946, in Table Grove to Eldon and Frances Smith Kendrick, she married
Dale E. Chenoweth on April 19, 1970, in Table Grove. He survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Kathrine Reynolds of Table Grove, Teresa Westfall of Lake Elizabeth, CA; and Michelle Chenoweth-Younce of St. Louis; three sons, Kevin of Table Grove, Shannon of Adair and Kenneth of Decatur; six grandchildren; five brothers, Bob Kendrick of Table Grove, Lonnie Kendrick of Roseville, Danny Kendrick and Larry Kendrick, both of Vermont, and John Kendrick of Industry; and two sisters, Sandra Spangler of Table Grove and Juanita Hammack of Havana. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. She was a former employee of Bob’s Dairy Dipper in Astoria and Farm King in Macomb. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb with the Rev. Tim Ashley officiating. Burial was in Harris cemetery in Table Grove. Memorials may be made to McDonough District Hospital Hospice Program or the American Cancer Society.
Jerald 'Jerry' Peacock
Jerald L. 'Jerry' Peacock, age 74, of 202 East Martin Street, Abingdon, died at 2:34 p.m. Sunday, November 8, 1998 at his home. He was born March 29, 1924 at Beardstown, Illinois, the son of Ralph Edward and Flossie Bell Kirgan Peacock. He married
Dora Mae Bridgewater on October 14, 1944 at Benton, Arkansas. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Billy Peacock, and Tim Peacock, both of Abingdon; one daughter, Connie Geerdes, Buffalo, New York; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, one granddaughter, and one sister. He had lived in Abingdon since 1955. He had worked as a farmer and later worked at the former Outboard Marine Corporation in Galesburg before retiring in 1984. He served in the US Army during World War II and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a member of Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon. Funeral services will be at 1:30 Sunday, November 15 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel, Abingdon with Reverend Danny Hunt officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, November 14 at the chapel. Burial will be in the Abingdon cemetery where military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #381. Memorials may be made to the Abingdon Banty League.
Joe W. 'Wib' Roberts
Joe W. 'Wib' Roberts, 77, Avon, passed away at 2:40 p.m. Monday, October 26, 1998, at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
Born December 21, 1920, in Middlebrook, AR, to John Rex and Rosie Belle Cates Roberts, he married
Virginia Miller on July 3, 1943, in Kahoka, MO. She survives.
Also surviving are four sons, David and Everett, both of Avon; Joe of Windsor, CO; and Jack of Spangle, WA; one daughter, Roberta Cook of Shelbyville; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his twin sister, Wilma Strickland of Knoxville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one grandson.
He moved to Abingdon from Middlebrook at age 14 and has been an Avon resident since 1953. He farmed and also worked for Row Manufacturing Co. He later was employed by Neff Co. for 26 1/2 years. A member of the Avon United Methodist church and its Methodist Men, he also taught Sunday School for many years.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, October 30, with the Rev. Rick Kerr officiating. Burial was in Avon cemetery. Corman Memorial Home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Mike Roberts, David Roberts, Jeff Roberts, Justin Roberts, Bradley Cook, John R. Roberts, and Henry Combs.

Marguerite N. Martin
Marguerite N. Martin, 98, of Macomb died at 3:55 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 1999, at the Heartland Health Care Center. She was born April 25, 1901, to William and Maude Avery Saffell of Macomb. She married
Hansel L. Martin on Oct. 21, 1925, in Macomb. He died Jan. 6, 1994. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Monninger of Bloomington; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. Mrs. Martin was a lifelong resident of Macomb and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church of Macomb. Funeral services were Tuesday at Dodworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home in Macomb with the Rev. Mark Myers officiating. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Heartland Health Care Center.
Alma (King) Justus McManus
Alma (King) Justus McManus, 85, of 2146 N. Highway 96, Nauvoo, died at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, May 6, 1999, at Keokuk Area Hospital. She was born Jan. 4, 1914, in Colchester to Moses and Effie Butterfield King. She married
Arthur Justus in February 1937. She married
Niel McManus in July 1965. He died in 1981. She is survived by her daughters, Janet George of Keokuk, Iowa and Judy O’Chel of Mobile, Ala.; a step-son, Craig McManus of Davenport, Iowa; a step-daughter, Carol Davis of Long Grove, Iowa; 14 grandchildren and several great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, three sisters, two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Mrs. McManus graduated from Western Illinois State Teachers College in Macomb in 1936. She had lived most of her life in the Colchester, Macomb and Nauvoo areas. She taught school at Macomb Senior High from 1948 until 1962 and was also the school librarian. She was a member of the Illinois Teachers Association. Clugston-Tibbits Funeral Home of Macomb was in charge of arrangements. Cremation rites have been accorded. The Rev. Lori Harvey officiated at graveside services held Monday at Oakwood cemetery.
Dale Lake
Port Clyde, Maine - Dale Edward 'Jack' Lake, age 83, died February 29, 2000 at Camden Health Care Center. He was the husband of Catherine A. (Wells) Lake, whom he married
in 1954.
He was born in Warren County, Illinois, Sept. 9, 1916, the son of Robert C. and Ada Lincoln Lake. He attended schools in Avon, Illinois, and received a bachelor of arts degree from Western Illinois University and a master’s degree in fine arts from Colorado State College.
He served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the African and Italian theaters.
He taught in a one-room school and then taught art for 15 years at the Rock Falls, Illinois, Junior High School. He also taught Art for 15 years at Northern University in DeKalb, Illinois.
After visiting the Mid coast to film a lobstering trip in 1973 and 'discovering' Port Clyde, the Lake’s retired in Port Clyde. At the age of 62, Mr. Lake learned to ride a bicycle; six years later, he took up tennis. He enjoyed dining out at fine restaurants. His hobbies were traveling, painting and antiques.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine, of Port Clyde; a brother, Rex Lake and his wife, Helen, of Oraville, California; two nephews, Roger and Clifford Lake and a niece Sara Lake, and a cousin, Martha Davis of Avon.
Private services were held.
