Fay E. Campbell

Fay E. Campbell, 87, formerly of Bushnell, passed away at 5:25 a.m., Tuesday, October 27, 1998, at LaMoine Christian Nursing Home in Roseville.

Born July 4, 1911, in New Philadelphia to George and Mae Young Faler, she married Charles E. Campbell Sr. on April 20, 1935, in Bushnell. He passed away June 24, 1985.

One sister and two grandchildren also preceded her in death.

Surviving are six sons, LaVerne and David, both of Macomb; James of Canton, Charles of Havana, Dallas of Bushnell, and George of Roseville, one daughter, Jessie Shumaker, and one brother, Elmer Faler Sr., both of Bushnell; two sisters, Bertha Burgess of Abingdon and Zelma Gillette of Industry; 23 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 29, at Martin-Hollis Funeral Home, Bushnell. Burial was in Mound cemetery, near Bushnell. Memorials may be made to LaMoine Christian Nursing Home.

Duncan Morrison

Duncan Morrison, age 85, passed away in his sleep on October 14, 1998 in Brooklyn, New York.

He was a resident of Abingdon from the early 1920’s until his return from service in the Pacific in 1945.

He was a jazz musician and artist and worked for many years as art editor of Parents Magazine in New York, while maintaining many close friendships in Abingdon.

He had no immediate family, but many friends in New York and Illinois.

Brittany N. Peak

Brittany Nichole Peak, infant daughter of Chris Peak and Sheryll Siever, Galesburg, died at 9:45 a.m. Friday, October 30, 1998 in St. Mary Medical Center.

Surviving are her parents; one brother, Brad Allen Siever, Galesburg; one sister, Becca Siever, Washington; and her grandparents, Wanda J. Vogler and Richard Vogler, both of Abingdon, and Jim and Evelyn Danforth, Galesburg.

A private family graveside service was held Monday in East Linwood cemetery with Rev. Mike Van Acker officiating. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Laurence O. Clark

Laurence O. Clark, age 70, of Danville, formerly of Galesburg, passed away at 9:05 p.m. on Thursday, October 29, 1998 at his residence.

He was born September 22, 1928 in Abingdon, Illinois, to Herbert and Verna Lowery Clark. He married Dorothymae Runner Reed. She preceded him in death October of 1983. He later married Annabelle Breezely Mann on October 13, 1990 in Danville. She survives.

Also surviving are four stepsons Terry (Cindy) Reed of Edgewood, NM, Dennis (Denise) Mann, of Monmouth, Illinois, Doug (Janice) Mann of Danville and David (Cindy) Mann of St. Joseph, Illinois; two brothers Allen Clark of Abingdon, Illinois and Claire (Vesta) Clark of Elmwood, Illinois; five grandchildren, Aubrey and Joseph Mann of Danville, Erin and Jacob Mann of Monmouth, Illinois and Shawn Laurence Reed of Edgewood, NM. A special nephew Wayne (Janice) Mann of Danville and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Roger Clark.

Larry graduated from Abingdon High school in 1946. He then attended Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois where he graduated in1950. He had also taught for two years at the Harrisburg High School in Harrisburg, Illinois.

He was in the US Army from 1950-1952. He had originated and taught the Defensive Biological Warfare School for the Department of Defense in Japan.

His professional career included 37 years as a sales representative for Merck Pharmaceuticals where he received several sales awards for outstanding achievement. He was a mentor for many beginning sales reps during his career.

He was known as 'Lefty' or 'Larry' to his many friends. He enjoyed his career, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday November 1 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church 1930 N. Bowman Ave. in Danville with Rev. Jeffery Moore officiating. Visitation was also held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday November 2 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Home, Galesburg. Graveside and military rites were performed at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday November 3rd at the Memorial Park cemetery in Galesburg.

Memorials in Larry’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, Carle Hospice or the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Benjamin Goldsmith

Benjamin F. Goldsmith, age 79, of 307 East Seventh Street, Beardstown, died Friday, October 30, 1998, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

Born October 29, 1919, in Davenport, Iowa, to Benjamin F. and Kathleen Spear Goldsmith, he married Mary Leta Hobbs on January 14, 1972, in Cass County. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Benjamin H. of Bushnell and Ken of Hopkinsville, Kentucky; two daughters, Ruth Sipes of Springfield and Anna Pepper of Abingdon; two stepsons, Robert Hobbs of Pekin and David Hobbs of Plant City, Florida; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

One granddaughter preceded him in death.

He was a World War II Army veteran.

He was a corporate and out of state auditor for the State of Illinois, retiring in 1973.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Sager Funeral Home. Burial was in Beardstown City cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to Cass County Visiting Nurses.

Lauretta Bennett

Lauretta G. Bennett, age 86, of 420 East Main Street, Good Hope, Illinois, died at 8:27 a.m. Sunday, October 25, 1998, at her residence.

Born October 14, 1912, in McDonough County to Chester and Helen Spicer Kessler, she married Myrle Bennett on July 3, 1937, in Davenport, Iowa. He survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Bruce Bennett of Knoxville and Myron Bennett, of Clinton, Pa.; one daughter, Diane Thurman of Moline; six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; and one half brother, Elwin Kessler of Avon.

She was preceded in death by four sisters.

She worked at Kewanee Public Hospital; St. Francis Hospital and McDonough District Hospital, both in Macomb; and Roseville Nursing Home. She also did private nursing.

She was a graduate of Gem City Business College in Quincy and St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Macomb.

She was a member of the Pilot Knob Club and the Retired Nurses Club. She was a member of Good Hope United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Sargent-Worthington Funeral Home in Macomb with Rev. Tim Platt officiating. Burial was in the Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Macomb.

Memorials may be made to the Good Hope Rescue Squad.

Marvin E. 'Gene' Hottel

Marvin E. 'Gene' Hottel, 65, 504 E. Second Ave., Monmouth, passed away at 1:20 p.m. Saturday, October 17, 1998, in St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria. He was born April 6, 1933, in Abingdon, the son of Lyle and Fannie Pierce Hottel. He married Ruth Scott. Surviving are one son, Vincent Hottel, Pittsfield, MA; his mother, Fannie Hottel, Monmouth; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father. He was reared in Augusta, and was graduated from Augusta High School. He received a bachelors degree from Monmouth College. He also attended Western Illinois University, Macomb, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA. He served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He was branch head technician for the Strategic Systems Projects Office in the Department of the Navy for 28 years. He retired in 1988 and returned to Monmouth. Most recently, he drove a school bus for Laidlaw Transit Inc., Galesburg. He held a pilot’s license. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Turnbull Funeral Home, Monmouth, with the Rev. Kenneth Klein officiating. Burial was in Augusta cemetery. Memorials may be made to Jamieson Center, Monmouth.

Verner Rylander

Verner Vincent Rylander, age 86, of 127 N. Joy Street, Oneida, died at noon Wednesday, October 21, 1998, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. Born January 13, 1912, in Ontario Township, Knox County to Elfing and Lydia Eklund Rylander, he married Pauline Yocum on December 11, 1935, in Peoria. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Lillian) Voss of San Diego and Mrs. Ron (Karen) Moody of Altona; two sons, John of Rock Falls and Charles 'Chuck' of Oneida; two sisters, Irene Johnson of Oneida and Doris Widbin of Morton; one brother, Erland of Oneida; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Three brothers preceded him in death. He worked at Abingdon Pottery and Galva Foundry. He then was a corn sheller doing custom work in the Oneida area, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church in Altona. He formerly served on the Oneida City Council and the Oneida Fire Department. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home in Oneida with Rev. Tim Anderson officiating. Burial was in Oneida cemetery. Memorials may be made to his church or to any charity.

Irma Grace Nash

Irma Grace Nash, 82, of Virden, formerly of Macomb, died at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999 in Doctors Hospital at Springfield.

She was born April 22, 1917, in Tiskilwa, Ill., to Louis and Minnie Roberts Parsons. She married Glenn Nash in 1947, at Macomb. He survives.

Survivors also include daughters Cynthia Forster of Green Bay, Wis., Claudia Nash of Springfield, Carol DuBois of Springfield; grandchildren Ashleigh Forster and Kayla DuBois; three nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Opal, Frances and Blanche; and brother Raymond.

Mrs. Nash lived in Macomb for many years before moving to Phoenix, from 1979 to 1996, when they moved to the Springfield area where she had resided since.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Montgomery Wards for many years and worked for Modern Home and Western TV.

She was a member of the First Christian Church from 1937 to 1979, First Christian Church at Phoenix from 1979 to 1996, and a member of West Side Christian Church at Springfield until 1999.

Services were Wednesday in Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Dorsey officiating. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery at Macomb.She was born April 22, 1917, in Tiskilwa, Ill., to Louis and Minnie Roberts Parsons. She married Glenn Nash in 1947, at Macomb. He survives.

Cleo Frances Miller Gray

Cleo Frances Miller Gray, age 90, of 801 West Martin Street, Abingdon, passed away at 3:55 a.m. Thursday, August 5, 1999 at the St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.

She was born March 18, 1909 in Hancock Township, Illinois, the daughter of John Leonard and Linda Jane Hasten Miller. She married Colin Rex Gray on March 27, 1929 in Galesburg, Illinois. He preceded her in death February 2, 1976.

Survivors include two sons, Ormal Edward Gray and Larry R. Gray, both of Florida; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

She had lived in Abingdon for over 55 years.

Graveside services were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 9, 1999 at the Abingdon cemetery with Reverend Thomas Heather officiating.

Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
