Haroldean 'Dean' Shinn
Haroldean 'Dean' Shinn, age 76, of 522 Knox Road 400 North, Abingdon, Illinois, passed away at 9:20 a.m. Sunday, August 8, 1999 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg, Illinois.
He was born April 25, 1923 in rural Maquon, Illinois, the son of Harry and Mamie Halsey Shinn. He married
Eleanor Wilson on November 30, 1942 in Palmyra, Missouri. She survives.
Other survivors include his father, Harry Shinn, Abingdon; two daughters, Connie Poland, Abingdon and Phyllis Moyer, Glendale, Arizona; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
He lived in the Maquon and Abingdon area all of his life and attended the Maquon schools.
He farmed near Abingdon for many years.
Mr. Shinn was an Army veteran of WWII and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 & Galesburg Veterans of Foreign War Post 2257.
Graveside services were held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Abingdon cemetery with Reverend McLaren officiating. Military honors were accorded by the American Legion Post #381.
Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon was in charge of the arrangements.
A memorial fund will be established.
Mary E. Haydon
A memorial service for Mary E. Haydon, 93, LaMoine Christian Nursing Home, Roseville, was held Friday, August 6, in the Oneida cemetery. Rev. Bruce King officiated and Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Knoxville, was in charge of arrangements.
A former Galesburg and Tampa, FL resident, Mrs. Haydon died Saturday, July 29, 1999, in the nursing home. Cremation was accorded. Memorials may be left to LaMoine Christian Nursing Home.
She leaves: a son, Ronald Paul Chezem, Steinhatcher, FL; and a sister, Shirley Jean Wilkins of Spring Hill, FL; and other relatives.
Hattie E. Sparrow
Hattie Ellen Sparrow, 89, of Roseville, died Wedesday, August 4, 1999 at 9:35 p.m. in the LaMoine Christian Nursing Home in Roseville.
A daughter of Green G. and Kansis E. Peak, she was born Nov. 10, 1909 in Indian Valley, Vir. She married
John Edward Sparrow, November 7, 1929, who passed away Sept. 4, 1998.
Suviviors include: sons, James Sparrow and Lawrence Sparrow in LaHarpe, and Eugene Sparrow of Roseville; daughter, Clydene Waller, Blandinsville; sisters, Emma Magee of Stronghurst and Ora Hughes of Blandinsville; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, a daughter, two sisters and three brothers.
Mrs. Sparrow grew up in Indian Valley, Vir. Following her marriage, she came to Raritan and moved to Swan Creek in 1950. She was a member of the Swan Creek United Methodist Church.
Graveside services were held Monday, August 9, in the Roseville cemetery and the Rev. Gina Sheridan, pastor of the Swan Creek and Roseville United Methodists Churches, officiated.
Corman Memorial Home, Roseville, was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the church or to the LaMoine Christian Nursing Home.
Mary Yvonne Botts
Mary Yvonne Botts, 76, of Madison, Wis., formerly of Macomb, died Aug. 8, 1999, in Meriter General Hospital at Madison.
She was born on Jan. 21, 1923, at Astoria, the daughter of Dewey and Alma Gruber Litchfield. She married
Robert H. Botts on Aug. 27, 1945. He survives at Madison.
Survivors include sons James (Lora) and their daughters Heather and Emily, all of Madison, and Randy (Ellen Switzky) of Carriere, Miss., and his sons Brendan (Katie) , Eugene and Shawn; great-granddaughter Jordan; sisters Maxine (Lloyd) Greuel of Industry, Mildred (Rankin) Beans of Vermont; brothers Maurice (Georgia) Litchfield and Marshall (Joyce) Litchfield, both of Macomb; Botts brothers and sisters Max (RoseAnn) of Nashville, Tenn., John (Barbara) of Rushville, Pat (Jack) Waggoner of Macomb, Donna (Dick) Raffensparger of Claypool, Ariz.; sister-in-law Jean Botts of Macomb.
Botts graduated from Industry High School in 1941. They began their 54 years of marriage in Macomb and Galesburg, before moving to Madison in 1959 for Bob to join Madison General Hospital as director of engineering services.
She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church at Madison, a lifetime member of Meriter Auxiliary and an active member in the PEO sisterhood. They wintered in Apache Junction, Ariz., since retirement.
Services were Wednesday in Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home with her brother, Marshall Litchfield, officiating. Burial was in Industry cemetery.
Donald W. Upp
Donald W. Upp, 84, of 129 N. Normal St., Macomb, died at 10:51 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, in McDonough District Hospital.
Mr. Upp was born June 12, 1915, in Macomb, the son of George F. and Agnes Mason Upp. He married
Dorothy Stivers on June 4, 1938, in Macomb. She survives.
Survivors also include daughter Janet Welch of Wonder Lake; grandchildren Christopher (Lisa) Welch and Carienne Welch; great-grandchildren Jereme Welch and Samantha Welch.
He was preceded in death by brothers Frank, Louis and George Harris Upp and sisters Margaret Roberts and Mary Darrah.
Mr. Upp was a farmer and drove a school bus for the Macomb school district for 20 years. He also worked for the Macomb Park District for 15 years.
He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and a 60-year member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a past member of the Prairie Hills Men’s Club.
Services were held Aug. 7 in St. Paul church in Macomb with Father Richard Pricco officiating. Burial was in St. Paul cemetery.
Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the YMCA Senior Citizens Pool Table Fund.
Glenn A. Peterson
Funeral services for Glenn A. Peterson, 90, Roseville, were held Wednesday, August 11, at 10:30 a.m. in Corman Memorial Home, Roseville. Rev. Charles Peterson officiated and interment was in the Point Pleasant cemetery.
Mr. Peterson passed away Saturday, August 7, 1999 at 7:45 a.m. in LaMoine Christian Nursing Home, Roseville. Memorials may be left to the Swan Creek United Methodist Church.
A son of Charles E. and Mary Beaty Peterson, he was born May 22, 1909 in Swan Creek. He married
Maber Hillyar, August 22, 1934 in Macomb, who survives.
He also leaves: three sons, Keith of Roseville, Gary of Monmouth, and Merlin of Phoenix, AZ; a daughter, Shirley Gray, Roseville; a brother Charles, Macomb; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.
His parents, four sisters, three brothers, a son and a grandson preceded him in death.
Mr. Peterson farmed in the Swan Creek and Youngstown neighborhoods, was a member of the Warren County Farm Bureau and attended the Swan Creek United Methodist Church.
Paul Barkley
Paul Eugene Barkley, age 90, of London Mills, Illinois, passed away at 8:35 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 1999, at Farmington Country Manor in Farmington.
Born May 8, 1909, in Peoria County to Harry and Florence Mabel Fleisher Barkley, he married
Grace Tasker on June 4, 1930, in Lewistown. She passed away November 9, 1998.
Two sisters also preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sons, Larry of Modoc and Jerry of London Mills; two daughters, Phyllis Terwilliger of Avon and Alice Urish of Glasford; one sister, Alma Turl of Elmwood; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He farmed in the London Mills area. He also worked at the Hermon Elevator, Bob Trone Feed Store and also demolished buildings for many years.
He was a member of the London Mills Senior Citizens and Masonic Lodge.
Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in Maquon cemetery.
Corman Memorial Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Alice Helmers
Mary Alice Helmers, 85, of Macomb, formerly of LaHarpe, died at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, in the Elms Nursing Home at Macomb.
She was born June 13, 1914, in Fountain Green Township, to Vernon and Christian May (George) Carmack. She married
Wendell Helmers on March 10, 1938, in Nashua, Iowa. He died Aug. 4, 1987.
She is survived by sons Richard (Karen) of Macomb and Kenneth of Rock Island; grandchildren Douglas Helmers of Clark, Mo., Derek (Dovetta) Helmers of LaHarpe, Deborah (Tim) Canfield of Ada, Okla., and Johnna (Shannon) Fischer of Rock Island; eight great-grandchildren; one great-grandstepson; sister-in-law Vera Dick of Rock Island; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She also was preceded in death by her parents and brother, George Wayne Carmack.
At an early age Mrs. Helmers moved with her parents to Blandinsville and attended school, graduating from Blandinsville High School with the class of 1932.
After graduation she worked at the Kirbride Bakery and Wolfe Drug Store. In 1936, she moved with her parents to LaHarpe, where she worked as a bookkeeper for Olen Bradshaw at the LaHarpe Creamery. She continued as a bookkeeper when the Peoria Creamery took over.
She was elected to several terms as city clerk and city treasurer. In July 1962, she started as bookkeeper and clerk for the LaHarpe Telephone Company, continuing there until she retired March 31, 1985.
She and her husband moved to the Jefferson House at Macomb in December 1985.
She was a member of First Christian Church of Macomb, LaHarpe Senior Citizens, Wee-Bit-O-Fun Club and the Blandinsville Order of the Eastern Star.
Services were Sunday in Banks & Beals Funeral Home at LaHarpe with the Rev. James Stovall officiating. Burial was in the LaHarpe cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Lions Club, LaHarpe Senior Citizens and the Elms Nursing Home.
