James Neville

James Brian Neville, M.D., Captain, USNR (Ret.), who practiced medicine in Lake Forest and Highland Park for over 50 years, died on March 12, 2010 at Lake Forest Hospital. Dr. Neville was born on October 17, 1925 in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Loyola Academy in Chicago with class honors in 1942. After three years at Loyola University, he entered Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. He graduated from Stritch at the age of 22 in 1948. He was a resident at Henrotin Hospital in 1950. Dr. Neville was then commissioned a Lieutenant JG and entered the US Naval School of Aviation Medicine in Pensacola, Florida. He was stationed at NAS El Toro and the deployed to Korea in 1951. While in Korea, Dr. Neville served as the Flight Surgeon assigned to MAC 33-VMF-214 as well as the Marine 9th Infantry Battalion. In 1952, Dr. Neville began his Internal Medicine Residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He completed his residency in 1954 and was a principle physician at the Municipal Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Chicago. In 1959, Dr. Neville entered private practice at Highland Park and Lake Forest Hospital, and began a longstanding partnership with Dr. George Wendel. He continued reserve duty at Glenview naval Air Station with 1st Marine Air Wing serving a tour in Vietnam. In 1985, Dr. Neville retired from the Navy. After a decades long career, he retired from private practice in 2001. On September 12, 2001, Dr. Neville volunteered his services as a flight surgeon at Great Lake Naval Training Station until 2006. Dr. Neville is survived by Genevieve MacVeany Neville, his wife of 56 years, his children J. Brian Jr. (Clare), Arthur K. (Dana), Kathleen M., Edward P. (Beth), Michael S. (Elizabeth) and Thomas M. (Kerri) and 15 grandchildren. For the last ten years, he and wife traveled the world together. He was a student of history and languages. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with his grandchildren. He was caring, intelligent, quick humored and an inspiration to his children. Services will be held 12:00 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010 at St. Patrick Church (Old Church), 991 S. Flora Douglas Benson, 68, longtime resident of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff died March 4, 2010 at Evanston Hospital. Loving wife of Thor R. Benson and the late Donald B. Douglas. Endearing mother of Andrew Douglas, Julie (John) Lucas, Donald Craig (Angi) Douglas and Leslie (Evan) Bauman. Amazing grandmother of Toby and Gavin Douglas, Ryann, Tate and Shea Lucas, step-grandmother of Sebastian, McKenzie, Alec and Brodie. Dear Sister of 1 brother and 9 sisters. Dedicated teacher of many. Flora received her Bachelor’s degree from Loyola, was instrumental in the formation of the Guidance Resource Center at Lake Forest High School and was an inspirational English teacher and counselor at Woodlands Academy. No visitation. Interment will be private. Memorial service 11 a.m. Friday, March 12th at the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, 700 N. Sheridan Rd. Lake Forest, IL 60045. Please omit flowers. Highland Park - Susan Smykal Griffith, 77, of Highland Park and former longtime resident of Lake Forest, died February 26, 2010. Wife of D. Kendall Griffith; Mother of Kay (Michael) Murphy of Lake Forest, Kendall Griffith of Chicago; Grandmother of Brian and Christopher Murphy; Daughter of the late Lt. Gen. Richard & Helen Smykal; Sister of Ralph (Betty) Smykal of Wheaton, IL. Susan was active with the Woman's Board of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Lake Forest Chapter of the Children's Home and Aid Society of Illinois, and Lawrence Hall Youth Services. She was a graduate of Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. A former high school English teacher, Susan was an avid reader, loved the Art Institute of Chicago and was known for her thoughtful attention to family and friends. "Nana" will be dearly missed by her grandsons, Brian and Christopher Murphy. Funeral service and interment will be private. Patricia Stach Chase, 86, of Lake Bluff, died Feb. 19, 2010. She was born in Iowa City, IA and graduated from the University of Iowa. After graduating college, Patricia accepted a position in Washington, D.C. with the FBI and later became the Secretary to the General Partner of Merrill Lynch Stock Brokers. She transferred to the Chicago office where she met her future husband to be Edward Chase, Jr. In later years she was a Wing of the Infant Welfare Society. She is survived by her dear son, Robert (Linda) Chase. She was preceded in death by her husband “Ned” in October 2004 and two brothers, Carl and Robert Stach. Joan Ireland Adams, 85 of Jupiter, FL, formerly of Lake Forest, IL died on February 10, 2010 after a lengthy and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Mrs. Adams was born in Norwalk, Connecticut on December 24, 1924 to Judge Richard and Lena (nee Sather) Ireland. She was the loving wife of the late Robert Herrick Adams who passed away in February of 2007. Joan was a devoted mother to her two surviving sons, Robert Herrick Adams, Jr. (Debra) and Richard Ireland Adams (Kristine) both of Lake Forest. Her six surviving grandchildren, Courtney, Kelsey, Connor, Mackenzie, Jack and Lindsay will dearly miss their “Gaga”. Joan is also survived by her sister Mary Whipple Rule (A.O.); nephew Adrian (Margaret) and nieces Hilary (Steven) and Amy (Rahm). Joan, who was affectionately referred to as “Tootsie”, graduated from Connecticut College for Women in 1946. She and Robert married on June 22, 1946 and had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary just prior to Bob’s death in 2007. Joan enjoyed gardening, antiques, and tennis. She was an avid reader and a passionate sports fan. She loved animals, especially dogs and spent much of her time writing eloquent and kind letters to friends and family members. She lived life to the fullest and embraced all whom she met with an engaging sense of humor. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm Friday, March 5, 2010 at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, 400 East Westminster Rd, Lake Forest, IL. Memorial contributions to support Alzheimer’s disease research may be made in Joan’s name and made payable to Northwestern University FSM CNADC. Edward H. Thomas, age 82 of Libertyville formerly of Knox, IN died February 5, 2010. Life member of American Legion Post 510, Lake Bluff and 40 & 8 voiture 604 of Gurnee. Veteran of the U.S. Navy during WWII. Graduate of Illinois Institute of Technology in 1952 and received his MBA from UIC. Retired from the state of Indiana as an auditor in 1994. For the past 15 years he and his wife have been devoted to the American Legion and the 40 & 8 and traveling. Husband of Dorothy nee Tauber; father of Laura Luhtala of Orlando, FL; and Edy (Paul) Lotharius of Lake Forest; grandfather of Kathryn and Sydney Lotharius. Frank C. Schell Jr.
Schell Jr., Frank C. A former corporate executive, died on January 3 in Evanston, Illinois. He was 92. A native of New York City, he was educated at New York University where he earned a B.S. degree magna cum laude in business administration. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 as an instructor in the midshipmen training program at the University of Notre Dame and as Lieutenant (j.g.) and Commanding Officer of the USS LSM-81 (Landing Ship Medium) at the Battle of Okinawa. After the war, he was an officer of the Chase Manhattan Bank and in 1951 joined the Quaker Oats Company of Chicago as Assistant Treasurer. Mr. Schell held a number of senior corporate positions, including leadership roles in research and development and corporate planning, and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fisher-Price Toys, Inc., a subsidiary of Quaker Oats. He was a member of the executive committee, and was elected to the board of directors of Quaker Oats in 1964. In 1976 he was named President and Chief Executive Officer of Babson Bros. Co., the dairy farm equipment company. Mr. Schell served on the National Dairy Council and was a Trustee of the Nutrition Foundation. He was a director of the First National Bank and Trust Company of Barrington, the Infant Welfare Society of the Chicago area, and the Chicago Botanic Garden. He was an avid tennis player and painter. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Carol; two sons, Frank C. Schell III (Joanne) of Chicago and Richardson W. Schell of Kent, Connecticut; and by grandchildren, Sarah Anderson (Ben) and Christina Pate (Patrick); and great-grandchildren, Aengus and Ariana Anderson and Rhodes Pate. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Church, 784 Sheridan Road, Winnetka. Memorial donations may be made to the Scholarship Fund, Kent School, Kent, CT 06757.

Bender, James "Jim" E. 61, of Glenview, passed away January 2, 2013 after a gallant battle with cancer. Beloved son of Irma and late Edward Bender and beloved brother of John (Sherry).
