Funeral services for Rena Mae McPheeters, 55, of New Albany, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at the Greater Mount Zion Apostolic Church of God, 3845 Wayne St., New Albany, with burial in West Haven Cemetery. She died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services.
She was a native of Adirville, Ky. and a member of Greater Mount Zion Apostolic Church of God.
Survivors include her husband, Max A. McPheeters Jr.; daughters, Jennifer Hinkle and Deanna Jenkins; sons, Marx A. McPheeters III, Joshua J. McPheeters and Philip A. McPheeters; sisters, Margaret Croudep, Patricia Robinson, Eva Hunter, Peggy White, Geneva Smith-Field and Mary Carter; brothers, Walter Smith Sr., Henry Smith, Cordell Smith and Clinton Smith; seven grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, and from 10 a.m. until time of the service at the church.
Baity's Funeral Home in New Albany is in charge of arrangements.
Canaan Timberlake
age 20; of Ramsey
Funeral services for Canaan Timberlake, 20, of Ramsey, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Gehlbach and Royse Funeral Home in Corydon, with burial in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery
near Corydon. He died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, in Mauckport.
He was born in Louisville, Ky. on Feb. 22, 1983. He was a 2001 graduate of North Harrison High School, active in North Harrison football and basketball and a construction worker.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Cindi Schneider-Zollman and Shawn Zollman, Ramsey; father and stepmother, Ellis and Vanessa Timberlake, Mauckport; brother, Chase Timberlake, Lanesville; grandfather, Edmund Schneider, Corydon; grandmother and step-grandfather, Betty and John O'Dea, Mauckport; and step-grandparents, Pat and Roger Jacobs, Arcadia, Fla.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, and after 8 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at the funeral home.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Canaan Timberlake Scholarship for Electrical Apprenticeship Training in care of Gehlbach and Royse Funeral Home.
Thelma Beryl Walkowski
age 87; of Palmyra
Funeral services for Thelma Beryl Walkowski, 87, of Palmyra, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at Market Street Chapel of Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes, with burial in Holy Trinity Cemetery, New Albany. She died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2003, at her home.
She was a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and was the former Thelma Beryl Hann. She was a former member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Survivors include three sons, William J. Walkowski Jr., Covina, Calif., James C. Walkowski, Bainbridge Isle, Wash., and Thomas R. Walkowski, Detroit, Mich.; a daughter, Carol Rowe, Palmyra; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Walkowski Sr. and two daughters, Joan Duffy and Beverly J. Walkowski.
Visitation at the funeral home will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2.

Courtney Smith
age 91; World War II veteran
Courtney Smith, 91, of Yorva Linda, Calif., died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, in Yorva Linda.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, retiring from the Army in 1954. He graduated from college in Eugene, Org. and taught school for 13 years in Calif.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Smith; two daughters, Kathy Lamberd, Portland, Ore. and Linda Ross, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Marsha Colder and her husband, Douglas, Yorva Linda, Calif.,; two sisters, Ruby Bare, Clarksville and Edith Couch, Sellersburg; two brothers, William Smith and wife, Jessalene, Sellersburg and Everett Smith, Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bertha and Edgar Smith and two brothers, James and Frank Smith.
Funeral services and burial will be held in Washington, D.C.
Dorothy J. Sparrow
age 73; Belknap Hardware cashier
Funeral services for Dorothy J. Sparrow, 73, of New Albany, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 1752 Scheller Lane, New Albany. The body was cremated. She died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at St. Matthews Manor Nursing Home.
She was a native of Taylorsville, Ky., a cashier with Belknap Hardware for 39 years and a graduate of Taylorsville High School.
Survivors include numerous friends who cared for her.
Pearson Funeral Home, 149 Breckinridge Lane, Louisville, Ky., is in charge of arrangements.

Clair L. Taylor
age 82; World War II veteran
Funeral services for Clair L. Taylor, 82, of New Albany, formerly of Sacramento, Calif., and Indianapolis, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services.
He was born April 25, 1921, to Clyde and Lula Taylor in Switzerland County near Moorfield. He was in the U.S. Air Force during and after World War II, retiring in 1971, and later retired as an accountant for both the California and Indiana state governments.
Survivors include his daughter, Barbara E. Taylor, Los Angeles, Calif.; brother, Roy M. Taylor, New Albany; sisters, Maude E. Kost and Lucy M. Junkin, both of Indianapolis and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Terry Ann Taylor of Oxnard, Calif.
The body has been cremated. There will be no visitation. Private burial will be in the New Albany National Cemetery.

Thomas A. Chiat
age journalist
A memorial service for Thomas A. Chiat, of New Salisbury, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at the Advent Christian Church, 2129 Shelby St., New Albany, with private burial. He died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at his home.
He was a native of Louisville, Ky., the chief photographer and pilot for Imagemaste/AerialImages and formerly worked for the Louisville UPI Bureau and the Indianapolis Star.
Survivors include his sister, Heidi Chiat, Ferndale, Wash.; aunt and uncle, George and Martha Akers, Calif.; aunt, Marguerette Stramiello, Fla.; and a friend, Lynda Lamb, Floyds Knobs.
There will be no visitation.

Funeral services for Betty Holmes Stemler Butler, 78, of Milton, Ky., formerly of Jeffersonville, will be held at 7 p.m. EST, this evening, Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Milton Baptist Church, Milton, Ky. She died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, in Louisville.
She was the daughter of Orville and Helen Hurlbut Holmes and was retired from Stemler Plumbing in Jeffersonville.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Butler; a daughter, Donna Williams, Clarksville; a son, Chris Stemler, Springville; a stepdaughter, Rhonda Wingham, Milton; a brother, Donald Holmes, Brandenburg, Ky.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Stemler Jr. in 1976, her parents and a great-grandchild.
Visitation at the church will be after 2 p.m. today until service time.
Visitation at Scott Funeral Home, Main Street Chapel, will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, followed by graveside services at Walnut Ridge Cemetery, Jeffersonville.

age 56; New Albany native
Funeral services for Cynthia J. Fenwick, 56, of Lockport, New York, formerly of New Albany, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at Oak Street Chapel of Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes, with burial in Atkins Cemetery. She died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Kenmore Mercy Hospital in Kenmore, N.Y.
She was the former Cynthia J. Parr, a native of New Albany. She was a seamstress for Marie's Sewing Center and was a Baptist.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond A. Fenwick Jr.; a son, Jeff Fenwick and his wife, Melissa, Lockport, N.Y.; two daughters, Michelle Harris and her husband, Jon, Buffalo, N.Y. and Rhonda Magruder and her fiancee, John King, Charlestown; a brother, Byron Parr, Clarksville; a sister, Debby Vogt and her husband, Phil, Sellersburg and five grandsons, Justin, Blake, Stephen, John and Joshua.
Visitation at the funeral home will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, and after 9 a.m. Friday.
