Robert D. Hilgendorf 1922-2000
MANHATTAN - Robert D. Hilgendorf, 78, died Aug. 14 at Mercy Health Center
in Manhattan. He was born April 30, 1922, in Lincoln, the son of Robert
Augustus and Louisa Marie Lyster Hilgendorf. He graduated from Lincoln High
School and enrolled in Kansas State College in 1940. After a stint as
combat officer in Normandy during World War II, he returned to Kansas State
and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism. He married Maxine
L. Moss Sept. 11, 1943, in Columbus, Ga. She died July 15, 1990. He joined
the college faculty in Extension Information and was manager of radio
station KSAC, which became KKSU. He broadcast Wildcat football and
basketball games beginning in 1947, and in 1951 organized the K-State
Sports Network. In 1954, he joined KVGB AM & FM in Great Bend, where he
worked as sales manager, sports director, assistant manager and station
manager prior to becoming president and general manager. He also helped
organize and manage Cobb & Associates, which built and operated cable TV
systems in Great Bend, Hoisington and Larned.
Hilgendorf served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the
City PTA Council, chairman of the city industrial development commission
and was a nine-year member and chairman of the Barton County Community
College board of trustees, all of Great Bend. He had been a member and
elder of the First United Presbyterian Church, Great Bend Rotary Club, Elks
Lodge and the American Legion. He was president of Kansas Association of
Broadcasters and received the Hod Humiston Award for outstanding service to
Kansas sports broadcasting, the KAB Distinguished Service Award, and the
University of Kansas Grover C. Cobb Award for outstanding public service
broadcasting.
Survivors include one son, Robert D. Hilgendorf Jr. of Allentown, Penn.;
two daughters, Gretchen Hammeke of Wichita and Jan Scheideman of Wamego;
one brother, Harold Hilgendorf of Drumwright, Okla.; four grandchildren and
one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by one brother, Roland
Hilgendorf.
Funeral services are at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Harrison-Hall Funeral
Home in Lincoln with the Rev. D-Ann Cooper officiating. Burial will follow
at Lincoln cemetery with full military honors. Friends may call today at
the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan. Memorials are
suggested to the Susan B. Komen Foundation in care of the
Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS
66502; or the Harrison Hall Mortuary, 111 East Elm, Lincoln, KS 67455.

Edward A. Wondra 1917-2000
ST. JOHN - Edward A. Wondra, 83, died Aug. 14 at Pratt Regional Medical
Center. He was born April 8, 1917, at Odin, the son of Joseph J. and
Elizabeth Herrman Wondra. He married Teresa Frenzl May 15, 1946, at Odin. A
resident of the St. John area for 55 years, he was a farmer and stockman.
Wondra was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church and the Knights
of Columbus, both of St. John. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II
serving in the infantry.
Survivors include his wife of the home; seven sons, Denis Wondra, Eugene
Wondra, Vernon Wondra and Harold Wondra, all of Great Bend, Kenny Wondra of
Enterprise, Richard Wondra of Seward and Jim Wondra of Pratt; three
daughters, Judy Griffith of Nickerson, Diane Staub of St. John and Marilyn
Grizzell of Macksville; 23 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by four brothers, Tony Wondra, Andrew Wondra, Joe
Wondra and Rudy Wondra.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Minnis Chapel in St. John. Funeral
Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Rene
Guesnier officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John.
Friends may call from 1-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel. Memorials
are suggested to American Heart Association or the church, both in care of
the funeral chapel.

Donald Dean Denney Sr. 1932-2000
Donald Dean Denney Sr., 68, died Aug. 14 at Hutchinson Hospital.
Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced by Bryant-Christians
Funeral Home in Great Bend.

Col. John F. 'Jack' Wilhm Sr. 1919-2000
TOPEKA - Col. John F. "Jack" Wilhm Sr., 81, died Aug. 13 at a retirement
home in Topeka. He was born July 12, 1919, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of
Jerome and Ada Wallace Wilhm. He married Agnes Marie Smith Jan. 30, 1943,
in Argentine. She died April 20, 1993. A resident of Topeka since 1983,
coming from Hays, he was a retired army colonel and worked for the Hays
Chamber of Commerce from 1972-1983.
Wilhm was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus
Council 8411, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include two sons, John F. Wilhm Jr. of Sarasota, Fla., and James
M. Wilhm of Bentonville, Ark.; two daughters, Janet S. Burgardt of Great
Bend and Judith A. Slimm of Overland Park; three brothers, William Wilhm of
Bonner Springs, Jerry Wilhm of Stillwater, Okla., and Joe Wilhm of Mountain
Home, Ark.; and eight grandchildren.
Parish prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Brennan-Mathena
Funeral Home in Topeka, followed by a Knights of Columbus Council 8411
Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Burial with military honors will be at Fort Riley National Cemetery.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are
suggested to the church, 5973 SW 25th, Topeka KS 66614.

Richard V. Mendez 1928-2000
LARNED - Richard V. Mendez, 72, died Aug. 14 at Larned Health Care and
Living Center. He was born Jan. 2, 1928, at San Antonio, Texas, the son of
Jose and Antonia Virreal Mendez. He married Eulalia Salazar Feb. 11, 1952,
in San Antonio. A resident of Larned, he was a truck driver for farms.
Mendez was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church of Great Bend. He
was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of Salina; one son, Gilbert Mendez of Great
Bend; four daughters, Dianna Collins of Great Bend, Silvia Bodillia of San
Antonio, Mary Mendez and Irene Duke, both of Salina; one brother; four
sisters; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Rosary will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Great Bend Family Mortuary. Graveside
services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great
Bend with the Rev. Nicanor Feranqco officiating. Military honors will be
conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m.
Wednesday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Larned Health Care
and Living Center, in care of the mortuary.

Clement 'Clem' Rudolph Weiser 1918-2000
Clement "Clem" Rudolph Weiser, 82, died Aug. 12 at Great Bend. He was born
Jan. 1, 1918, at Odin, the son of Rudolph and Mary Grelinger Weiser. He was
a graduate of Odin High School and attended St. Benedicts College in
Atchinson for two years. He married Loretta Agnes Boor June 10, 1946, in
Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1946, coming from Odin, he was
an Allstate Insurance agent for Thurman Morrison and Associates and a
co-owner of Weiser Brothers Grocery Store in Great Bend.
Weiser was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, life member of BPO
Elks lodge 1127, Fraternal Order of Eagles, past commander of American
Legion Post 180, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 and Disabled American
Veterans. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, involved in
the invasion of Oran in the North African theater. He received the Bronze
Star and French Croix de Guerre.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Gary Weiser of Great Bend
and Robert Weiser of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters, Diana Drake and Mary
Jo Barton, both of Great Bend; five brothers, Larry Weiser and Nick Weiser,
both of Great Bend, Alois Weiser of Hayward, Wis., Anthony Weiser of
Kenosha, Wis., and Rudolph Weiser of Spearfish, S.D.; three sisters, Katie
Reif and Trudie Sturdy, both of Wichita, and Mary Ann Wasinger of Sun City,
Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by two brothers, Bernard Weiser and Herbert Weiser.
Rosary will be at 7:30 tonight at Fryberger Mortuary. Vigil will be at 8
p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the
church with the Rev. Angel Dy officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend
Cemetery with full military honors by Fort Riley honor guard. Friends may
call from 2-9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, all at the
mortuary, and from 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the church. The
family will receive friends at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Memorials
are suggested to Brit Spaugh Zoo or St. Rose School Endowment, both in care
of the mortuary.

John Richard Wesley 1923-2000
TILLAMOOK, Ore. - John Richard Wesley, 77, died Aug. 10 at his home. He was
born Aug. 4, 1923, in Great Bend, the son of Ernest and Elizabeth Eppstein
Wesley. A resident of Tillamook since 1990, he was a chemical engineer and
had taught high school for a few years in Kansas.
He was a past member of Lions Club. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of
World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Pat, of the home; two sons, John Wesley of
Tillamook and Bruce Wesley of Bend, Ore.; and one grandchild.
Private service were held with arrangements by Waud's Funeral Home in
Tillamook.

Laurel Robert Sargent 1922-2000
RANSOM - Laurel Robert Sargent, 78, died Aug. 11 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born April 8, 1922, at
Brownell, the son of Robert and Anna Noll Sargent. He married Darlene
Schreiber May 29, 1955, in Ransom. A lifetime resident of Ransom, he was a
farmer and stockman.
Sargent was a longtime board member and Sunday school teacher of First
Mennonite Church in Ransom and resident agent, past-president and board
member of Ransom Farmers Co-op.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Lynn Richard Sargent of
Quinter and Gary Frank Sargent of Ransom; one daughter, Patricia Flax of
Brownell; one sister, Marjorie Jaehde of Ransom; one stepbrother, John F.
Mishler of Ransom; one stepsister, Virginia Dietterich of Ransom; and nine
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Susan Sargent; and
one stepsister, Evelyn Carlson.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Eric
Buller officiating. Burial will be at Ransom Cemetery. Friends may call
until 9 tonight at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City and prior to the
service Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church or
American Diabetes Association, both in care of the funeral home.

Glennis E. Carr 1913-2000
LARNED - Glennis E. Carr, 87, died Aug. 11 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Joseph Campus in Larned. She was born July 12, 1913, at Dundee,
the daughter of Peter C. and Lillie M. Unruh Schultz. She married Delos
Carr Dec. 25, 1935, at Pawnee Rock. He died Feb. 26, 1991. A lifetime
resident of Larned, she was a teacher, farm wife and homemaker.
Mrs. Carr was a member of Bergthal Mennonite Church in Pawnee Rock, a
former member of Walnut FCE and 4-H sewing leader.
Survivors include two sons, Larry L. Carr and Harlie R. Carr, both of
Larned; two daughters, Carla Bowman of Cimarron and Bonnie Carr Mosiman of
Great Bend; one brother, Elwin Schultz of Texas; one sister, Velma Schmidt
of Pawnee Rock; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by one son, Val Gene Carr; and one brother Orville
Schultz.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in
Larned with the Rev. Muriel Stackley officiating. Burial will be at
Bergthal Mennonite cemetery in Pawnee Rock. Friends may call until 8
tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 pm. Tuesday and until service time Wednesday at
the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the
mortuary.
