Nelda Leona Ackley 1905-2000
ST. JOHN - Nelda Leona Ackley, 94, died Oct. 29 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Dec. 9, 1905, in
Alfalfa County, Okla., the daughter of Amor and Sarah Jefferies. She was a
1924 graduate of Kiowa High School and a 1928 graduate of Southwestern
College at Winfield. She married Millard Charles Ackley Aug. 17, 1929, in
Alfalfa County. He died Oct. 11, 1993. A resident of St. John since 1932,
coming from Iowa, she was a homemaker and teacher at Hardtner.
Mrs. Ackley was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hesparian Club,
a charter member of Mothers Club II and a 25-year member of Golden Belt
Campers, all of St. John.
Survivors include two sons, Millard Ackley Jr. of Haysville and Thomas
Ackley of St. John; three daughters, Beverly McGee of Dallas, Texas, Mona
Atkins of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Nancy Clarkson of Arkansas City; one
brother, Vernon Jefferies of Wichita; nine grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in
death by one brother, one sister and a grandson.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Minnis Chapel in St. John with the
Rev. W. Harlan Rittgers officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park
Cemetery in St. John. Friends may call from 1-8 tonight at the funeral
chapel. Memorials are suggested to United Methodist Women in St. John, in
care of the funeral chapel.

Grace Feese 1899-2000
ST. JOHN - Grace Feese, 101, died Oct. 30 at Leisure Homestead in St. John.
She was born Sept. 19, 1899, in St. John, the daughter of John and Mary
Long. She married C.J. Witcher and Hillary Feese. Both preceded her in
death. A resident of St. John since 1973, coming from Hutchinson, she was a
practical nurse.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy John of St. John; one
step-daughter, Marjorie Burlingame of Springfield, Mo.; one grandchild; two
great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by one daughter, Helen Gwen; one step-son, Clair Witcher; one
step-daughter, Marjorie Burlington; two sisters, Florence DeSelms and Pearl
Goerke; andtwo grandsons.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Fairview Park cemetery in
St. John with the Rev. W. Harlan Rittgers officiating.Friends may call from
1-8 p.m. Thursday at Minnis Chapel in St. John. Memorials are suggested to
donor's choice, in care of the funeral chapel.

Juanita Faye Crawford 1900-2000
LARNED - Juanita Faye Crawford, 100, died Oct. 30 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Joseph Campus in Larned. She was born July 23, 1900, at
Bonaparte, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Jessie Canning Mohler. She
married Walter M. Crawford Sr. in Larned. He died in 1943. A Larned
resident since 1920, she was a buyer for Lischesky's in Larned and a
homemaker.
Mrs. Crawford was a member of United Methodist Church and past president of
the American Legion Auxiliary, both of Larned.
Survivors include one son, Walter M. Crawford of Larned; one daughter Mary
Alice Hawes of Larned; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two sons, Donald
Eugene Crawford and Rollin Dean Crawford; one brother, Max Mohler; and one
sister, Vernona Mohler.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Larned cemetery with
the Rev. Charles Grant officiating. Friends may call from until 8 tonight,
and until noon Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Memorials
are suggested to donor's choice in care of the mortuary.

Doris Louise Keller 1916-2000
BROKEN HILLS, Okla. - Doris Louise Keller, 84, died Oct. 31 at Forest Hills
in Broken Arrow.
Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced by Bryant-Christians
Funeral Home in Great Bend.

Phyllis Ann Wendler 1951-2000
GARDEN CITY - Phyllis Ann Wendler, 49, died Oct. 29 at her home in Garden
City. She was born Sept. 25, 1951, in Wichita, the daughter of Frances and
Mary Dinkel Farmer. She was a graduate of Scott Community High School. She
was the first woman to graduate Summa Cum Laude in economics from Fort Hays
State University. She was a 1980 graduate of University of Kansas Law
School. A resident of Garden City since 1982, she worked for the law firms
of Jochems, Sargant & Blaes, Curfman, Harris, Wiegand & Depew and became a
full partner in 1985 in the Friesen & Wendler law firm.
She was a charter member of Big Brothers and Big Sister, member of American
Bar Association, American Trial Lawyers Association, Kansas Bar Association
and Kansas Trial Lawyers Association.
Survivors include one son, Dodge Wendler of Overland Park; her mother of
Scott City; and two sisters, Teresa Farmer of Great Bend and Doris Farmer
of Wichita.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City
with the Rev. Randy Caddell officiating. Graveside service will be at 3
p.m. Friday at Scott County Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight and
from 9 a.m. until noon Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are
suggested to the Phyllis Wendler Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral
home.

Donald Dean Martin 1936-2000
DODGE CITY - Donald Dean Martin, 64, died Oct. 30. He was born March 20,
1936, in Chase County, the son of George H. and Marie Martin. He attended
schools in Chase County and Colorado. He married Dorothy Duke. A resident
of Dodge City, he was a retired farmer and rancher, owning and operating
Double D Quarter Horses.
Martin was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Randy Martin of Great
Bend, Brian Martin of Bucklin and Brad Martin of Wichita; two daughters,
Terry Garcia of Dodge City and Donna Jones of Lakin; his mother of
Cottonwood Falls; one brother, Harold Martin of San Antonio, Texas; one
sister, Darlene Robertson of Moorhead, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home
in Cottonwood Falls. Burial will be at Prairie Grove Cemetery. Friends may
call prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to
the family, in care of the funeral home.

George A. 'Corky' Smith 1939-2000
AURORA, Colo. - Additional survivors of George A. "Corky" Smith, 61, who
died Oct. 9 in Aurora, are one daughter, Tara Smith of Great Bend; one
stepson, Brett Maris of Atwood; one stepdaughter, Traci Otipoby of Great
Bend; and three grandchildren.

Willa Peer Start 1909-2000
MCCRACKEN - Willa Peer Start, 91, died Dec. 29 at Ransom. She was born June
5, 1909, northeast of McCracken, the daughter of Clarence Nelsen and Maude
Edith Hanel Peer. She married Albert W. Start Dec. 28, 1925. He died March
7, 1959. A lifetime resident of Rush County, she was a farmer, school cook,
clerk at a drug store and substitute mail carrier for 42 years.
Mrs. Start was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of McCracken.
Survivors include one sister, Lena Lee Kindsvatter of Pueblo, Colo. She was
preceded in death by two brothers, Bennie C. Peer and an infant; and one
sister, Mannetta Petdigo.
Vigil will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in La
Crosse with the Rev. Benjamin Martin officiating. Burial will be at La
Crosse Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the
funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Willa Start Memorial, in care of
the funeral home.

Lester J. Ummen 1926-2000
Lester J. Ummen, 74, died Dec. 29 at Halstead Hospital in Halstead. He was
born Sept. 16, 1926, at Great Bend, the son of John Jacob and Wilhemina
Marie Hemken Ummen. He married Ruth Riemann Feb. 14, 1960, at Great Bend. A
life-time resident of Great Bend, he was a farmer and stockman.
Ummen was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend Co-op board,
Clarence Township board and American Legion. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Mark A. Ummen of Springfield, Va.; one
daughter, Karla Eisele of Westminster, Colo.; one sister, Edna Enerson of
Stanley, N.D.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two
sisters, Esther Enerson and Evelyn Ummen.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Dr. Gary
W. Teske officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may
call from 1-9 tonight and from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Bryant-Christians Funeral
Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to the church or Great Bend
Humane Society, both in care of the funeral home.

Rosa L. Hagerman 1907-2000
RUSH CENTER - Rosa L. Hagerman, 93, died Dec. 30 at Hays. Survivors and
funeral arrangements will be announced by Janousek Funeral Home in La
Crosse.

Jack Allen 1922-2000
HOISINGTON - Jack Allen, 78, died Dec. 29 at his residence in rural
Hoisington. He was born Sept. 1, 1922, in Drumright, Okla., the son of Lee
Bryant and Susie Wright Allen. He married Maxine Norland Feb. 6, 1943, at
McPherson. A resident of rural Hoisington, coming from Galva, McPherson and
Great Bend, he was a supervisor with Mistletoe Express and retired
production foreman for Allen Drilling.
Allen was a member of First Christian Church in Hoisington, Great Bend and
Larned, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American
Legion. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a motor
machinist's mate second class on a destroyer escort in the Pacific and
North Africa.
Survivors include his wife; one son, James Emery Allen of Pittsburg; one
daughter, Janice L. Allen of Hoisington; one brother, Dillard R. Allen of
West Sacramento, Calif.; three sisters, Artimas Lynn of Lexington, Ky.,
Brina Brown of Haysville and Susilea Hyson of Warren, Mich.; four
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two
brothers, James Simpson Allen and Earl Allen; and two sisters, Mable Thorn
and Lucille Allen.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in
McPherson with the Rev. Bill Johnson officiating. Burial will be at New
Gotland cemetery in rural McPherson with military rites by Fort Riley honor
guard. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Nicholson-Ricke
Funeral Home in Hoisington. Memorials are suggested to Golden Belt Home
Health and Hospice, in care of the funeral home.
