LaVern Waldon Johanson 1933-2000
SYLVIA - LaVern Waldon Johanson, 67, died Dec. 25 at Hutchinson Hospital.
He was born March 16, 1933, at Redwing, Minn., the son of Frank and Estelle
Anderson Johanson. He married Rosalee Hill Dec. 19, 1958, at Concordia. A
resident of Sylvia for five years, coming from Hutchinson, he was a retired
custodian.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Christopher Johanson of North
Carolina; three daughters, Marcee Johanson of Sylvia, Tina Harbert of
Harper and Wendy Johanson of Wichita; and six grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be held at Sylvia cemetery with the Rev.
Harry Graves officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until noon Thursday
at Minnis Chapel in Stafford.

Hazel Katherine Neubecker 1907-2000
DEXTER - Hazel Katherine Neubecker, 93, died Dec. 22 at Grouse Valley Manor
in Dexter. She was born Feb. 7, 1907, south of Grenola, the daughter of
Henry Edd and Mary Ann Baughman Eaglin. She attended Wolf Creek rural
school and was a graduate of Grenola High School. She married Glenn Edward
Neubecker Feb. 6, 1929, at Independence. He died July 28, 1997. A resident
of Dexter, coming from Grenola and Winfield, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Neubecker was a member of Grenola Christian Church and was active in
many Grenola community activities, including Royal Neighbors of America.
Survivors include two sons, Dwain Neubecker of Winfield and Dwight
Neubecker of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters, Barbara Worman of Ellinwood
and Shirley Friend of Wichita; two sisters, Ann Lawhon of Lakewood, Calif.,
and Marie Walker of Cherryvale; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren;
and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Wallace
Wartick officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery in Grenola.
Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Zimmerman Funeral Home in
Howard.

John V. Cossman 1904-2000
JETMORE - John V. Cossman, 96, died Dec. 26 at Hodgeman County Health
Center in Jetmore. He was born Dec. 5, 1904, in Pawnee County, the son of
John B. and Maggie Layton Cossman. He married Dessie C. Glunt Feb. 6, 1924,
at Dodge City. She died April 29, 1986. A lifetime resident of Hodgeman
County, he was a farmer and stockman.
Cossman was a member of First Baptist Church and Hodgeman County Historical
Society, both of Jetmore. He was also a member of the Rural School Board
and was awarded the Soil Conservation award in 1972.
Survivors include one son, James Cossman of Jetmore; two daughters, Thelma
Maxwell of Dodge City and Darlene Dugger of Kalvesta; one sister, Vada
Smiley of Garden City; 14 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and three
great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Johnny
Cossman; six brothers, Fred Cossman, Chester Cossman, Ted Cossman, Lester
Cossman, David Cossman and Wayne Cossman; and one great-grandson.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Mark Durham
officiating. Burial will be at Fairmount cemetery in Jetmore. Friends may
call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, all at Beckwith
Funeral Home in Jetmore. Memorials are suggested to the church or Hodgeman
County Health Center, both in care of the funeral home.

Gordon Ray Sims 1932-2000
BUSHTON - Gordon Ray Sims, 68, died Dec. 24 at Via Christi Regional Medical
Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born Sept. 8, 1932, the son
of Andrew J. and Delphia E. Lantz Sims. He was a 1950 graduate of Abbyville
High School and a graduate of Hutchinson Community College. A resident of
Bushton since 1997, coming from Arizona, he was owner and operator of
Southwest Services in Tucson, Ariz., and construction superintendant for
Allied Construction in Tucson until his retirement in 1995.
Sims was a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local
No. 661.
Survivors include four sons, Ray Sims of San Diego, Calif., Greig Sims of
Hutchinson, Tim Robbins of Germany and Bill Robbins of Greeley, Colo.;
three daughters, Gay Harper of Wichita, Tina Sims and Katrina Amick of
Bushton; his father of South Hutchinson; four brothers, Richard Sims of
South Hutchinson, Andrew "Bud" Sims Jr. of Lincoln, Mo., Jerry Sims of
Scottsdale, Ariz., and Stephen Sims of Pratt; three sisters, Louise Skiles
of Conway, Ark., Audrey Seaton of Hutchinson and Helen Rose of Ducktown,
Tenn.; 20 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by one infant son, Roger Sims.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel in Hutchinson
with the Rev. Keith Dellenbach officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park
Cemetery in Hutchinson. Friends may sign the guest book until 9 tonight and
from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are
suggested to Gordon Sims Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Roy H. E. Behrens 1920-2000
ALBERT - Roy H.E. Behrens, 80, died Dec. 26 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born Jan. 26, 1920, in Pawnee
County, the son of Herman J. and Gesina Helena Folkerts Behrens. He married
Iva G. Rattiff Dec. 4, 1946, at Albert. A lifetime resident of the Albert
area, he was a farmer and rancher.
Behrens was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars,
Barton County 4-H and church council. He was also Sunday school
superintendant and a past school board member. He was a U.S. Army veteran,
having served in World War II.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Cheryl S. Naugle of Orem, Utah,
and Jyl Nokes of Great Bend; two sisters, Marie Appel of Ellinwood and
Janet Rankin of Great Bend; and four grandsons. He was preceded in death by
one infant son, Gregory L. Behrens; four sisters, Edna Appel, Fern Schultz
and two infant sisters.
Prayer service will be at 7 tonight at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in
Great Bend. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church in Albert
with the Rev. Marvin Sackschewsky officiating. Burial will be at the church
cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials
are suggested to Peace Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or Great Bend Humane
Society, both in care of the funeral home.

Kenneth A. Fradd Sr. 1918-2000
Kenneth A. Fradd Sr., 82, died Dec. 25 at Via Christi Regional Medical
Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born July 23, 1918, at Great
Bend, the son of Bert Harvey and Ella Alice Chambers Fradd. He married
Cleone Marie Wesley Feb. 7, 1941, at Independence, Mo. She died Oct. 27,
1997. A longtime resident of Great Bend, he was a production manager for a
mobile home plant.
Fradd was a member of American Legion. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having
served in World War II and was the recipient of a Purple Heart.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth A. Fradd Jr. of Great Bend, Larry A.
Fradd of Aurora, Neb., and Gary L. Fradd of Reno, Nev.; two daughters,
Judith M. Sargent of Reno and Kristy Jo McComb of Chanute; one sister,
Hellen Louise Bishop of Sun City, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Bryant-Christians Chapel in Great
Bend with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Great
Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and from
9 a.m. until service time Friday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great
Bend. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association or to the
family, both in care of the funeral home.

Lorene Peterman 1928-2000
SYLVAN GROVE - Lorene Peterman, 72, died Dec. 24 at Ellsworth County
Medical Center. She was born Nov. 30, 1928, in Russell County. She married
L.W. "Pete" Peterman. He died Dec. 18, 1979. A resident of Sylvan Grove
since 1947, coming from Lucas, she was a librarian at Sylvan Public Library.
Mrs. Peterman was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and American Legion
Auxiliary, both of Sylvan Grove. She served as board member and president
of the board for Sylvan Grove Library.
Survivors include one brother, Marvin Strecker of Russell; and four
sisters, Elvera Prater of Hays, Lenora Strecker, Esther Stockamp and Thelma
Blase, all of Sylvan Grove.
Memorial services will be announced by Rodrick & Minear Funeral Home of
Sylvan Grove. Inurnment will be at a later date at Bethlehem Lutheran
Cemetery in Sylvan Grove. Memorials are suggested to Lutheran Hour or
donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home.

Roy Ellis Knupp 1912-2000
SUN LAKES, Ariz. - Roy Ellis Knupp, 88, died Dec. 21 in Chandler, Ariz. He
was born Sept. 16, 1912, at Plainview, Texas, the son of W. Harvey and Mary
Crain Knupp. He married Juanita V. Eitel. A resident of Sun Lakes, he was a
pilot and squadron commander of instructors at Thunderbird Field in
Phoenix, Ariz., owner of Roy Knupp Construction Company in Russell from
1953-1968 and involved in the oil business in Great Bend and Russell.
Knupp was a member of Church of Christ in Sun Lakes, The Last of the Helmet
and Goggle Pilots and a member of the Shrine and 32nd Degree Mason.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Lawrence R. Knupp of Lawrence; one
grandson; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one son,
James Knupp.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home
in Lawrence. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Memorials are
suggested to American Cancer Society, in care of Valley of the Sun Mortuary
in Chandler, Ariz.

Hazel Irene Lindquist Sparke 1900-2000
TOPEKA - Hazel Irene Lindquist Sparke, 100, died Dec. 24 at Aldersgate
Village in Topeka. She was born Feb. 22, 1900, on a farm near Soldier, the
daughter of Albert and Estella May Shields Walt. She was a 1923 graduate of
Gove High School and received her bachelor's degree in vocational
homemaking and master's degree in clothing and textiles from Kansas State
University. She married John Lindquist Dec. 24, 1923, at Los Angeles,
Calif. He died Jan. 21, 1948. She then married John Edward Sparke June 7,
1977, at Olathe. He died Nov. 3, 1983. A resident of Topeka, coming from
Gove County, she was a retired high school teacher.
Mrs. Sparke was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Great Bend.
She was also a past member of the local, state and national Teacher's
Association, past member of Order of the Eastern Star, past president of
Topeka Economics Association and judged foods and textiles at county fairs
for 17 years.
Survivors include three sons, John Lindquist of Morton, Ill., Charles
Lindquist of Golden, Colo., and Robert Lindquist of Brock, Neb.; one
stepson, Jack Sparke of Lovelock, Nev.; four sisters, Grace Maag of
Beaverson, Ore., Fannie Chandler of San Diego, Calif., Mary McMasters of
Wichita and Alberta McCrate of Iola; four grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Cecil
Walt, Donald Walt, Ivan Walt and Lewis Walt; and two sisters, Blanche Evans
and Goldie Wilson.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Schmitt Funeral Home in Quinter with
the Rev. Dr. Leslie Avery officiating. Burial will be at Gove Township
Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, in care of the
funeral home.
