Mildred 'Millie' Skillett 1936-2002
RUSH CENTER - Mildred "Millie" Skillett, 65, died Feb. 2 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. She was born June 18, 1936, in Liebenthal, the daughter of Joseph and Emma Unrein Legleiter. She married Garold Skillett Aug. 24, 1954, in Ada, Okla. A lifelong resident of Rush County, Millie worked as secretary and treasurer for Skillett and Sons Incorporated in La Crosse for 33 years. Millie was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Rush Center. Millie was a very loving mother and grandmother. A devoted church member, she taught Sunday School and served on various church committees. Millie was a very giving and generous person to her employees, community and the many organizations she contributed to. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Bob Skillett and his wife, Linda, and Rob Skillett, all of Rush Center; three daughters, Jeannie Philips and husband, Greg, of Lewis, Donna Skillett of Wamego and Debbie Skillett of La Crosse; three brothers, Carl Legleiter of McCracken, Joe Legleiter of Dodge City and Ken Legleiter of Arkansas City; one sister, Rose Adams of Yale, Okla.; five grandchildren, Wade Phillips of Manhattan, Ward Phillips of Hays, Josh Skillett of Wamego, Elliott Skillett and Luke Skillett, both of Rush Center; one great-grandchild, Caleigh Befort of Russell; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a host of friends, relatives and employees. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Emma Unrein Legleiter; two brothers, Alois Legleiter and Jerome Legleiter; one sister, Helen Schmidtberger; one infant sister, Mildred Legleiter; and one grandson, Chris Befort. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hope Lutheran Church in Rush Center, with the Rev. Maurice Schaus officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family receiving friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, all at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse, and from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Hope Lutheran Church in Rush Center, in care of Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Feb. 4, 2002

Reuben Lohrey 1913-2002
LA CROSSE - Our Lord called Reuben Lohrey to his heavenly home Jan. 30. He was born March 21, 1911, in Rush County, the son of John and Catherine Anna Marie Lohrey. He is survived by his sister, Mollie Zimmerman of Hillsboro. He is also survived by one niece, Janet Young of Philadelphia, Penn.; and three nephews, Kenneth Lohrey of Los Angeles, Calif., William D. Lohrey of Tulsa, Okla., John P. Lohrey of Oklahoma City, Okla. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Alex Lohrey and John Lohrey; and one sister, Kathryn Lohrey. Reuben grew up on a farm southeast of Timken. As a youth, he enjoyed sports and played on the Bison-Timken baseball team. He made his living on farms near La Crosse for many years before he moved to Bison in 1966. He took a position as Bisonis city man and held this job for 22 years before his retirement. After his retirement, he continued to work part time for the city. He and his sister, Kathryn, lived together for many years before she passed away in 1997. He lived in Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in La Crosse for the last six years after suffering a stroke, which impaired his walking. Up until the last year or so, he remained active making many beautiful crafts such as latch hook wall hangings and fabric wreaths. His crafts won him many ribbons at the county fair. He enjoyed visiting with his many friends and relatives and helping with the bulletin boards at Long Term Care. During warm weather, Reuben enjoyed taking Sunday road trips with friends to Larned, Ness City, Hays, Great Bend, Bison, or wherever else the road led. Reuben's loving and joyful spirit touched all who knew him and he will be greatly missed. Funeral will be at noon Saturday at Janousek Funeral Home Chapel in La Crosse, with Pastor Marilyn Christmore officiating. Burial will be at Baptist cemetery in Bison. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Bison EMTis or Bison Fire Department, both in care of the funeral home. Feb. 5, 2002

Rita A. Miller 1924-2002
LARNED - Rita A. Miller, 77, died Feb. 3 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus in Larned. She was born Dec. 20, 1924, in Pawnee County, the daughter of Joseph and Katherine Schwamborn Hammeke. She married Harold H. Miller Jan. 6, 1957, in Larned. A lifelong resident of Pawnee County, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Miller was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Belpre. Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, George D. Miller of Royersford, Penn., H. Dan Miller of Lewis and Patrick J. Miller of Garfield; one brother, Melvin Hammeke of Larned; four sisters, Mary Ellen Huschka and Inez Wasinger, both of Garden City, Margaret Ann Sullivan of Wichita and Maxine Herman of Larned; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Leroy Hammeke. Vigil service will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Dennis Reed officiating. Burial will be at Garfield Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the churchis Altar Society or Garfield EMS, both in care of the mortuary. Anna Mae George 1937-2002
ALBERT - Anna Mae George, 64, died Feb. 3 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus in Larned. She was born May 3, 1937, in Cimarron, the daughter of Charles Franklin and Emily McNeil Wheeler. She married LoRay Darrell George Aug. 21, 1959 in Albert. A lifelong resident of the Albert area, coming from Kalvesta, she was a homemaker and worked as a registered nurse. Mrs. George was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, choir, church organist and Evangelical Lutheran Church Women, all of Albert. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, LoRay W. George of Albert; four daughters, Jill C. LeManske of Overland Park, Tacy A. Keener and Kara L. Renz, both of Rush Center and Gail L. Sanders of La Crosse; three brothers, Roy Wheeler of Manhattan, Loren Wheeler of Arvada, Colo., and Wayne Wheeler of Holcomb; two sisters, Frances Embree of Garden City and Betty Sinclair of Littleton, Colo.; and 11 grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Charles Ledin officiating. Burial will be at Peace Lutheran Church cemetery in Albert. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, all at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Stanley Dale Loomis 1930-2002
GARFIELD - Stanley Dale Loomis, 71, died Feb. 3 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus in Larned. He was born Nov. 19, 1930, in Emporia, the son of Walter Edward and Leila Marie Austin Loomis. He was a graduate of Stafford High School. He married Joyce Ailene Bratton April 1, 1950, in Stafford. A resident of Garfield since 1955, he was employed in the oil field business for most of his life, retiring from Galloway Oil of Wichita in 1996 and serving as a consultant to Smith Oil of Hutchinson. Loomis was of the Christian faith. He was a member of American Legion Post 300 in Garfield, the Kinsley Country Club of Kinsley and coached Little League and Legion teams for several years. He was a U.S. Marine Corps. veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Phil Loomis of Topeka, Bruce Loomis of Macksville and Scott Loomis of Larned; two twin daughters, Karla Youngdahl of Wichita and Kala Loomis of Topeka; two brothers, Dean Loomis of Olathe and Don Loomis of Littleton, Colo.; one sister, Denise Maltby of Tulsa, Okla.; and seven grandchildren. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned, with the Rev. Charles Grant officiating. Burial will be at Garfield cemetery with Fort Riley Military Burial Detail performing military graveside honors. Friends may call until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to KU Endowment for Cancer Research or American Legion Post 300, both in care of the funeral home. Feb. 5, 2002

Fannie L. 'Fran' Gilmore 1922-2002
RAYTOWN, Mo. - Fannie L. "Fran" Gilmore, 79, died Feb. 3 at her home in Raytown. She was born June 10, 1922, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She attended Great Bend area schools. She married James Robert Gilmore Feb. 15, 1947. He died Aug. 22, 2001. A resident of Raytown, coming from Great Bend, she worked at the Jones Store in Kansas City, Mo., for many years. Survivors include three sons, Robert Gilmore of Chilhowee, Mo., Dennis Gilmore and Don Gilmore, both of Lee's Summit, Mo.; one sister, Jeanne Goddard of Overland Park; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Tom Adams. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Langsford Funeral Home in Leeis Summit. Cremation will follow the service. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until service time Wednesday, at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home. Feb. 5, 2002

Rev. Arlo V. Lehmann 1939-2002
CLAFLIN - The Rev. Arlo V. Lehmann, 62, died Feb. 5 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born Nov. 21, 1939, in Pierce, Neb., the son of Arthur and Mildred Pilger Lehmann. He attended public and parochial schools in Pierce through high school. He also attended Concordia University in Seward, Neb., Concordia University in Mequon, Wis., and Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Mo. He married Euleen Joyce Werth in Seward. A resident of Claflin, he served as a missionary to Papua, New Guinea and served as teacher, minister of Christian education and pastor in parishes in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kansas, Nebraska and California. Lehmann was a member and pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Claflin. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Nathan Lehmann of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Jonathan Lehmann of Topeka; one brother, Robert Lehmann of Concordia, Mo.; one sister, Lucerne Lehmann of Omaha, Neb.; and five grandchildren. A private committal service will be held Wednesday at Claflin cemetery in Claflin, with the Rev. Lloyd Sprick officiating. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the church or Lutheran service program of the donor's choice, all in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Feb. 5, 2002

Rev. Arlo V. Lehmann 1939-2002
CLAFLIN - The Rev. Arlo V. Lehmann, 62, died Feb. 5 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born Nov. 21, 1939, in Pierce, Neb., the son of Arthur and Mildred Pilger Lehmann. A private committal service will be held today at Claflin cemetery in Claflin, with the Rev. Lloyd Sprick officiating. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Michael Schotte officiating and being assisted by other area clergymen. There is no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the church or Lutheran service program of the donor's choice, all in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Feb. 6, 2002

Leona L. Heinlein 1913-2002
STAFFORD - Leona L. Heinlein, 89, died Feb. 5 at Leisure Homestead in Stafford. She was born Feb. 2, 1913, in Pitcher, Okla., the daughter of Charles and Marie Hawver Whelchel. She married Fredrick N. Heinlein June 6, 1933, in La Crosse. He died Aug. 1, 1965. A resident of Stafford for most of her life, she was a homemaker and had worked for several Stafford doctors. Mrs. Heinlein was a member of First Christian Church in Stafford. Survivors include one son, Fred Heinlein of Nickerson; two daughters, Billie Mayes of Hutchinson and Carroll Doering of Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers, Jube Whelchel of Winfield and Burl Whelchel of Massachusets; one sister, Emma Willinger of Wichita; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Viola "Toots" Ginest. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Stafford cemetery with the Rev. Karen Ault officiating. There is no visitation listed. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of Minnis Chapel in Stafford. Feb. 6, 2002

Virginia Alma Franz 1909-2002
ROZEL - Virginia Alma Franz, 92, died Feb. 3 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Dec. 28, 1909, in Dawson County, Ky., the daughter of Verdie and Callie Creekmur Young. She married Alfred Lee Franz Sept. 17, 1930, in Larned. He died July 27, 1985. A lifelong resident of Rozel, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Franz was a member of First Baptist Church, American Baptist Women and Golden Rule Club, all of Rozel. Survivors include one son, Melvin A. Franz of Warrensburg, Mo.; one daughter, LaRue Cooper of Burdett; two brothers, Owen Young of Moxee City, Washington and Leroy Young of Carthage, Mo.; three sisters, Lucille Spreier of Rozel, Margaret Foster and Marie Niblack, both of Lee's Summit, Mo.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Norman Franz and Arlyn Franz; three brothers, Troy Young, Dick Young and Jack Young; and one grandson, Ethan Franz. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned, with the Rev. John Hester officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Burdett Emergency Medical Service, in care of the mortuary. Feb. 6, 2002

Anna Sophia Brown 1905-2002
NEWTON - Anna Sophia Brown, 96, died Feb. 4 at Newton Presbyterian Manor in Newton. She was born Dec. 18, 1905, in Great Bend, the daughter of Henry A. and Ella M. Stark Drehle. She married Lawrence V. Brown Nov. 25, 1927, in Great Bend. He died April 2, 1994. A resident of Newton, coming from Severy, Greenwood County, Barton County and Chautauqua County, she was a homemaker and farm wife. Mrs. Brown was a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Newton. She was active in the Greenwood, Barton and Chautauqua counties Extension Homemakers Units for 60 years and was involved as a 4-H leader, serving in many capacities for many years. Survivors include one son, Lloyd Brown of Newton; two daughters, Laveta Abboud of Wichita and Carolyn Brown of Boerne, Texas; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and four step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Darrell Brown; four brothers, Bill Drehle, George Drehle, Charles Drehle and Edward Drehle; and one sister, Katherine Fenn. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. James Anderson officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Great Bend City cemetery in Great Bend. Friends may call until 9 tonight, with the family greeting friends from 7-8 p.m., all at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. Docile S. Newell 1915-2002
DAMAR - Docile S. Newell, 86, died Feb. 4 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. She was born March 22, 1915, in Damar, the daughter of Silica "St. Peter" and Adelore D. Manny. She married Harvey Archie "H. A." Newell Sept. 1, 1936, in Damar. He died Feb. 3, 1973. A lifelong resident of Damar, she was a homemaker, school teacher and cook. Mrs. Newell was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Anne Sodality, both of Damar. Survivors include four sons, Gary Newell of rural Damar, Larry Newell of Damar, Myron Newell of Plainville and Glenn Newell of Hays; two daughters, Gloria Carson of Hoisington and Claudia Luetters of Salina; one sister, Velma Newell of Damar; 25 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers; and four sisters. Vigil service will be at 7 tonight at the church. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Revs. Joseph Popelka and Bill Kilian officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph cemetery in Damar. Friends may call from 2-6 today at Spencer-Stinemetz Chapel in Hill City and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday, at the church. Memorials are suggested to Masses or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral chapel. Feb. 6, 2002
