Marion B. Hare 1907-2004
HUTCHINSON — Marion B. Hare, 96, died Feb. 16 at Thorne Care Center, Wesley Towers. He was born Dec. 4, 1907, at Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Clabe and Dorothea Johnson Hare. He was a 1928 graduate of Fort Dodge High School and graduated from School of Engineering in Milwaukee, Wis. He married
R. Lenore Conard June 3, 1948, in Salina. A resident of Hutchinson since 1960, coming from a farm in Rush County, he was a machinist with C&W Machine Shop in Great Bend, and a stockman and farmer in Rush County.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of U.S. Army Air Corps, serving in England, France and Germany during World War II.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Gerald D. Hare of Youngstown, Ariz.; two daughters, Patricia Leiker of Salina and Sharon Henneke of Centerville, Ind.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Sanders.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Elliott Chapel in Hutchinson, with the Rev. Nick Warner officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, with military graveside service conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the church or Wesley Towers, both in care of the mortuary.

Lorena E. Shover 1916-2004
QUINTER — Lorena E. Shover, 88, died Feb. 16 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. She was born Feb. 16, 1916, in rural Ness County, the daughter of Rupert E. and Maggie Jane Corfman Bray. She was a 1935 graduate of Beeler High School. She married
Gaylon W. Davis Sept. 18, 1937, at Wichita. He died May 24, 1964. She married
Kelsey J. Shover August 1971, at Liberal. He died July 8, 1990. A resident of Quinter, she was a homemaker and a domestic housekeeper, retiring in 1972.
Survivors include one son, Rex E. Davis of Garden City; one daughter, Rita Weber of Grainfield; one brother, William J. Bray of Great Bend; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and six step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Wylie R. Bray; and one grandson, Mitch Weber.
Funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church at Studley, with Dr. LeRoy Herder officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lane County cemetery in Dighton. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Schmitt Funeral Home in Quinter. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

Daniel L. Dennis 1913-2004
BURDEN — Daniel L. Dennis, 90, died Feb. 14 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice - The Vyne, in Wichita. He was born Nov. 14, 1913, at Purcell, Okla., the son of Dan and Mary Olive Deville Dennis. He married
Gladys Loraine Graham April 3, 1918, in Shidler, Okla. A resident of Burden, coming from Illinois, Oklahoma and Kansas, he was employed by Texaco, retiring in 1978 after 41 years of service.
Dennis was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Weleetka, Okla.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Daniel Joe Dennis of Burden; three daughters, Frances Jaurene Lauppe of Burden, Jacqueline Kay Myers of Great Bend and Pamela Sue Dennis of Mount Hope; one brother, Joe Dennis of Raton, N.M.; three sisters, Mary Moyer of Garland, Texas, Thelma Himelic of Omaha, Neb., and Fleta Martin of Franklin, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Matthews and Johnnie Johnson.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Home in Winfield. Burial will be at Burden cemetery in Burden. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice or Burden Baptist Church, both in care of the funeral home.

Edward C. Miller 1919-2004
Edward C. Miller, 84, of Great Bend, died Feb. 15 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born June 7, 1919, at Albert, the son of Conrad and Anna Rients Miller. He married
Lenora Ellen Schultz Sept. 26, 1945, in Albert. A resident of Great Bend since 1992, coming from Albert, he was a farmer and a stockman.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge, both of Great Bend, American Legion and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served with the 186th Field Artillery Battalion and V Corps Artillery during World War II. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Bronze Star, Bronze Arrowhead and five battle stars.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Leland Edward Miller of Great Bend; one daughter, Lela Jean Howerton of Lyons; four brothers, Louis Miller of Bloomington, Ill., Eilt Miller of Great Bend, Carl Miller of Ellinwood and John Miller of Albert; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. James A. Strasen officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Kellan Thomas Soukup 2004-2004
Kellan Thomas Soukup, infant, was stillborn Feb. 13 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was the son of Richard T. and Nicole “Nikki” R. Roberts Soukup of Great Bend.
Survivors include the parents of the home; two sisters, Addie Soukup and Sydney Soukup, both of the home; grandparents, Ken and Diana Roberts of Great Bend and Ernest and Patricia Soukup of Wilson; great-grandparents, Ann Cole, Don Schamaun and Lila Bowman, all of Great Bend, Calvin Roberts of Woodward, Okla., and Mary Soukup of Wilson. He was preceded in death by step grandparents, Jack K. Cole and Delma Roberts; grandparents, Adeline and Leonard Soukup; and great-grandfather, Edward Soukup.
A private family service is scheduled with the Rev. Ken Hathaway officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Soukup Children’s Education Fund in care of the funeral home.

Hazel Jean Krekel 1936-2004
MANHATTAN — Hazel Jean Krekel, 67, of Manhattan, died peacefully on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 14, at Meadowlark Hills Honstead House in Manhattan. She had been battling a malignant brain tumor that was diagnosed Aug. 15, 2003.
She was born April 3, 1936, in Agnos, Ark., the daughter of John Henry and Virginia Frances Mills Smith. She was the youngest of seven children.
Mrs. Krekel was a life-long member of the Church of Christ and for the last 30 years worshiped with the Dickens Avenue Congregation in Manhattan. Her passion for her faith was shown not only through her church life by being involved in many benevolent activities through the past several years, but also in her daily life. She was a spiritual mentor and a wonderful Christian example to many people with whom she came in contact with throughout her life. She found great enjoyment in helping others and was a faithful friend to many.
Hazel had four children of her own but many more “adopted children” too numerous to name. Hazel was also a loving and dedicated homemaker and mother to her children and grandchildren. Later in life after her children were grown she worked for J.C. Penney for eight years until retiring in 1999.
Hazel was united in marriage to Robert Wesley Krekel on Oct. 1, 1955, in Kansas City, Mo. They were married
for 48 years and he still lives in their home in Manhattan. Other survivors include: one son, David Krekel and his wife Y-Vonna of Buhler; and three daughters: Judy Wendland and her husband Mark of Topeka, Mary Blake and her husband Marco of Kansas City, Mo; and Debbie Kuhlman and her husband James of Great Bend; her brother: William Clifton Smith of Shawnee Mission; and eleven grandchildren; Katherine Anne Krekel, Benjamin David Krekel, Clarissa Jean Krekel, Christian Taylor Wendland, Jarrett Thomas Wendland, Marissa Lynne Blake, Aric Bradley Blake, Jaime Michelle Kuhlman, Jacob Wesley Kuhlman, Jessica Lyn Kuhlman and Justin Donald Kuhlman.
Mrs. Krekel was preceded in death by five sisters; Mary Bell Smith, Annie Bell Smith, Orbree Lee Smith, Nova Earline Smith and Eletha Euleen Taylor and by one grandchild; Daniel Lee Krekel.
Friends may call anytime beginning this afternoon and all day Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan.
Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at the Manhattan Church of Christ, 2510 Dickens Avenue. Mrs. Krekel has chosen to be cremated.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Maude Carpenter Children’s Home in Wichita or to a charity of the donor’s choice in Hazel Krekel’s name. ROWLETT, Texas — Murial Thomas, 81, died Jan. 16. She was born June 4, 1923, the daughter of Elmer and Marie Walter of Ellinwood.
Survivors include one daughter, Bonnie Loxterman of Rowlett; one sister, Cozette Deen of Safford, Ariz; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren; two infant daughters, Sharon Thomas and Sandra Thomas; one brother, Bud Walter; and one sister, Elaine Oberle.

Remi J. McAfee 1926-2004
HAYS — Remi J. McAfee, 77, died Feb. 12 at St. John’s of Hays Nursing Home. He was born Sept. 6, 1926, at Elmdale, the son of Troy W. and Marie VanHole McAfee. He attended St. Joseph Military Academy and was drafted from there his junior year. He married
Rosaline Weikert May 19, 1995. She died March 16, 1998. A resident of Hays, he was a former oil field worker, truck driver and had worked in carry out at Dillons from 1995 until 2003.
McAfee was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Knights of Columbus Council 6984. He served his country in World War II and retired from the Kansas Army National Guard.
Survivors include five stepdaughters, MaryAnn Shorman and her husband, Gary, of Hays, Teresa Leiker and her husband, Dave, of Great Bend, Margaret Dirks of Great Bend, Diane Weikert of Overland Park, and Jean Basgall and her husband, Keith, of Hays; three brothers, Pete McAfee of Hays, Troy McAfee Jr. of Derby and Millard McAfee of San Angelo, Texas; two sisters, Mary Ann Eakins of Colwich and Diane McAfee of Hays; grandchildren, Matthew, Rachel and Austin Budke; Michael and Matt Shorman; Nicole and Jessica Leiker; Makenna Dirks; and Kylie and Landon Basgall.
Parish vigil service will be at 6 p.m. today and a Knights of Columbus 6984 rosary at 6:15 p.m. today, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hays. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church. Burial with military honors by the VFW of Hays will be at St. Joseph cemetery in Hays. Dolores “Dee” Pace 1930-2004
Dolores “Dee” Pace, 73, died Feb. 14 at her home. She was born March 25, 1930 at Gorham, the daughter of Albert and Catherine Brungardt Weigel. A 44 year resident of Great Bend, coming from Lyons, she was a cake decorator.
Pace was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Altar Society both in Great Bend, the Cake Decorating Association and the Society of Cake Decorators.
Survivors include one son, G. Allen Pace of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Lu Ann Pace of Great Bend and Cindy Ellis of Colby; one brother, Elmer Weigel, of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Noreen Moiser Budig of Woodward, Okla. and Arlene Yarmer of Albuquerque, N.M.; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Francis Weigel; four sisters, Alberta Quint, Viola Cramer, Helen Windholz and Leona Weigel.
Altar Society rosary will be at 4 p.m. Monday, at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
