Mary L. Broadnax 1906-2004
HOISINGTON — Mary L. Broadnax, 97, died Feb. 11 at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center in Hoisington. She was born Feb. 12, 1906, at Magham, La., the daughter of Willie and Rosa Carol Cowell Cotton. She married
Walter Broadnax May 9, 1967, at Star City, Ark. A resident of Hoisington, coming from Star City, she was a homemaker.
She was a member of First Christian Church of Hoisington and a former member of First Baptist Church, also of Hoisington.
Survivors include two sons, Walter Broadnax of Atlanta, Ga., and William L. Broadnax of Tipton, Mo.; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Delois Broadnax.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Satur-day at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, with the Revs. Paula Bell and Don Fisher officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday, all at the funeral home.

Larry L. Bales 1940-2004
BISON — Larry L. Bales, 64, died Feb. 9 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born Jan. 28, 1940, in Spencer, Iowa, the son of Henry H. and Florice Cole Bales. He married
Carol J. Fox Sept. 1, 1960, at Anchorage, Ky. A longtime resident of Rush County, coming from Yates Center, he was a farmer and stockman.
Bales was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church of La Crosse, Seventh Day Adventist church elder for many years, and a member of Mid State Farmers Co-op.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Kevin Bales of Bison; three daughters, Debra Hovorka of Holcomb, Denyse Chubb of Tustin, Calif., and Cindy Ladd of Fairbanks, Alaska; one brother, Erving Bales of Sturgeon, Mo.; two sisters, Bonnie Carter of La Selva Beach, Calif., and Sherita Wren of El Dorado; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Janousek Funeral Home chapel in La Crosse, with the Rev. Ed Jumper officiating. Burial will be at Shaffer Seventh Day Adventist cemetery in Bison. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Ernest Fredrick ‘Ernie’ Strecker 1913-2004
PARADISE — Ernest Fredrick “Ernie” Strecker, age 90 of Osborne and formerly a longtime Paradise area resident, died early Sunday, Feb. 8, at Parkview Care Center in Osborne. He was born Aug. 5, 1913, at Paradise, the son of Henry and Minnie Stielow-Strecker. On April 24, 1936, he was united in marriage to Eva Mae Weller at Russell. They shared over 67 years of married
life together.
He grew up in the Paradise area and graduated from Paradise Rural High School in 1931. After his graduation he was at home on the family farm, homesteaded by Ernest’s grandfather Fredrick Stielow. Here, Ernest built a successful farm and ranch operation. He was involved with numerous agricultural committees and civic organizations. He lived in the Paradise community for 78 years, later moving to Russell and then to care facilities in Hesston and Osborne, where he resided in Parkview Care Center since April 2003.
He was a member of Paradise United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge in Natoma and later the Russell Masonic Lodge, Waldo Lions Club and was very active in civic organizations. He volunteered as baseball coach for summer baseball and was a fixture for many years as timekeeper for Paradise High School basketball games.
Ernie enjoyed his children and grandchildren, hunting, fishing and sports, particularly Kansas City Athletics/Royal baseball.
Ernest is survived by his wife, Eva of Parkview Care Center in Osborne; two daughters, Wanda Kay Augustine and her husband, Harold, of Great Bend, and Mary Anderson of Osborne; two sons, Albert Strecker and his wife, Janice, of Hutchinson, and Glenn Strecker and his wife, Rhonda, of Olathe; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; and two step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Herman and Carl Strecker; and his sister, Marie Reich.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Paradise United Methodist Church with the Rev. Elsie Crickard officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Herman cemetery near Paradise. Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today at Pohlman-Heise Mortuary in Russell and from noon until the service on Thursday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Paradise United Methodist Church and may be sent in care of Pohlman-Heise Mortuary, 610 N. Maple St., Russell, KS 67665.

Frances Marie Starbuck 1923-2004
Frances Marie Starbuck, 80, of Great Bend, died Feb. 9 at Great Bend. She was born Oct. 21, 1923, at Jennings, the daughter of Leo and Esther Hanson Bendon. She married
Paul Edwin Starbuck July 14, 1946, at Salina. He died Jan. 18, 2002. She was a resident of Great Bend since 1946, coming from Salina. She was a 1941 graduate of Decatur County High School in Oberlin. Frances was a bookkeeper and had worked for Junction City Transit Lines, and in Great Bend for Parrish Motor Company, Hanna Oil Company and Hoffman Oil Company.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, UR Welcome Sunday school class, Golden Sheaf Chapter 226 Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Post 180 Auxiliary, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 3111 Auxiliary, Reserve Officers Association League, Kiwaniqueens, a leader of Girl Scout Troop 81, den mother of Cub Scout Pack 117, member of Northwest EHU and a volunteer for the American Red Cross Bloodmobile. She was a Barton coordinator of the President Ford Committee -1976, a delegate to the Republican First Congressional District and State Convention in 1976 and had worked on numerous Bob Dole election campaigns.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Leo T. Bendon and two sisters, Glee Jorn and Lila Jean Bendon.
Survivors include one son, Mike and Rhonda Starbuck of Hebron, Neb.; one daughter, Pamela and Ian Patrick of Nederland, Colo.; three sisters, Cecil Hess of Oberlin, Helen Riepl of Cimarron, and Mary Lou Olson of Herndon; two grandchildren, Andy and Trish Starbuck of Colby, and Audrey Starbuck of Lincoln, Neb.; and one great-grandson, Drew Michael Starbuck of Colby.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, both at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, and from 9 a.m. to service time Friday at the church. Constance Eve LeMay McGill 1934-2004
BARTLESVILLE, Okla. — Constance “Connie” Eve LeMay McGill, 69, of Dewey, Okla., and formerly from Great Bend, passed into peace at the Heritage Villa Nursing Home in Bartlesville, Okla., Feb. 8. Cremation will be under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home in Bartlesville with a memorial gathering at a later date.
Connie was born Nov. 22, 1934, to Eldon Leander and Danelda Mae Harper LeMay in Superior, Neb. She graduated from high school in Great Bend and married
Marion Dean McGill Feb. 13, 1954, in Great Bend. She worked for Bell Telephone Company in Great Bend and held several part-time jobs while raising four children and creating a lifetime of memories for them.
Connie is survived by her husband, Marion Dean “Mac” McGill of the home; four children: Debbie Kay Neece with husband Steve and grandchildren Lea Andra and Chad Alan Gavellas of Bartlesville; Denise Lea Myrick and grandchildren Kimberly Ann Graham with husband Sean and Joshua David Harvey with Amy Butterworth of Columbus, Kans.; Dean Ray McGill of Dewey and grandchildren Clinton Dean Lawrence of Phoenix, Ariz., and Cody Ray Hair of Birmingham, Ohio; David Lynn McGill with wife Shellie and grandchildren Megan Ashley, Madison Lynn and Mackenzie Renee of Bartlesville; one sister, Karen Kay Copeland of Bartlesville; several nephews, great-nephews and a great-niece.

Leona Miner 1909-2004
Leona Miner, 94. of Great Bend, died Feb. 7 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. She was born March 5, 1909, the daughter of Park and Anna Blackler Goodno. A Great Bend resident since 1943, coming from Topeka, she was a homemaker.
She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ of Great Bend.
Survivors include one son, Ed Cavanaugh and wife, Sarah, of Houston, Texas; one grandson, Lamont Cavanaugh and wife, Kristina, of Tulsa, Okla.; and one granddaughter, Cynthia Bishop and husband, Steve, of Tulsa. She was preceded in death by one sister, Viola Bilka.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Diana Coberly officiating. Burial will be at Prairie Home cemetery in Topeka. Mary Ann Zamrzla 1908-2004
WILSON — Mary Ann Zamrzla, 95, died Feb. 7 at Hoisington. She was born Jan. 9, 1908, at Ellsworth, the daughter of Frank and Josephine Dolchek Charvat. She married
James E. Zamrzla Oct. 19, 1937, at Wilson. He died Dec. 26, 1996. A lifetime resident of the Wilson area, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Zamrzla was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church and St. Wenceslaus Altar Society, both of Wilson.
Survivors include three sons, James L. Zamrzla of Russell, Gene E. Zamrzla and John R. Zamrzla, both of Wilson; one daughter, Mary Ann Princ of Wilson; one brother, Leo Charvat of Independence; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at the church, with the Rev. Jerome Morgan officiating. Burial will be at St. Wenceslaus cemetery in Wilson. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Foster Mortuary in Wilson.

ALBERT — Daylon Rankin, 81, died Feb. 7 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Jan. 4, 1923, at Albert, the son of August and Mary Schmidt Rankin. He married
Janet Behrens Aug. 6, 1947, at Peace Lutheran Church in Albert. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer and a stockman.
Rankin was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Albert.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Randy Rankin and wife, Mary, of Castle Rock, Colo.; one daughter, Pam Becker of Topeka; one stepbrother, Rodney Quincy of Wichita; and three grandchildren, Laura Rankin, Colby Rankin and Ashton Becker. He was preceded in death by five stepbrothers.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at the church, with the Rev. Jack D. Russell officiating. Burial will be at Peace Lutheran Church cemetery in Albert. Lou Ella Mullis Grubb 1915-2004
HOISINGTON — Lou Ella Mullis Grubb, 88, died Feb. 7 at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell. She was born Dec. 12, 1915, at Brownington, Mo., the daughter of John Edward and Phoebe Ella Sisco Mullis. A Hoisington resident since 1940, she was co-owner and operator of a beauty salon and co-owner of the former Isle of Capri Restaurant, both of Hoisington.
She was a member of First Christian Church in Hoisington.
Survivors include two brothers, Willis D. Mullis of Chelsia, Okla., and Nelson Mullis of Rudy, Ark.; and one sister, Ola Mae Youtsey of Dorrance. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Oglesby James “OJ” Mullis, John Malcom “Moon” Mullis and George Henry Mullis; and two infant sisters, Mary Lee Mullis and Helen Mullis.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, with the Rev. Paula Bell officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington Cemetery.
