A resident of Baton Rouge, she died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at 9:15 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. She was 83 and a native of Liberty, S.C. Visiting at Carney-Mackey Funeral Home, 1576 Robin St., from 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, until religious service at 1 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Glasper Nero. Interment in Zachary Public cemetery. Survived by her son, Michael Hicks of Baton Rouge; a granddaughter, Andrea N. Thompson of Birmingham, Ala.; a cousin, Dorothy Mae Nero and husband Glasper of Augusta, Ga.; an aunt, Ida Mae Lane of Augusta; a stepdaughter, Audrey S. Taylor of Baton Rouge; a close friend, Irma Ferrington; and a host of other relatives and friends.

NICHOLAS, EVA THERESA SOLAR
She was ready to hear Him say, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." Died at 11:10 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at her home in Tunica. She was born in Morganza. Visiting at New Life Worship Center (UPC) in St. Francisville from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8:30 a.m. until service at 10 a.m. Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Clark with burial in Rogillio cemetery in Tunica. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, James J. Nicholas Sr., Tunica; daughters, Cynthia M. Nicholas and close friend, Virginia C. Montagne of Tunica, and Shirley B. Nicholas and longtime friend, William P. Walker of Tunica; a son, James J. "John" and wife, Tammy Johnson Nicholas Jr. of Tunica; a sister, Beatrice Lemoine, Morganza; brothers, Clarence Solar and Andrew Solar of Morganza and Clayton Solar, Baton Rouge; grandchildren, James W. Nicholas, John, Jeremy and Jacob Harrigill, Winnie Montagne and Kenneth Wright, all of Tunica, Marco Robinson of Jackson and Stacey Dejean of Woodville, Miss.; and great-grandchildren, Crystal Harrigill, Jackson, and Lauren and Dalton Dejean, Woodville. preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Faye Nicholas; twin sister, Edith Ray; parents, Wallace and Ida Plaisance Solar; a sister, Viola Kramer; and a brother, Clinton Solar. She was a member of New Life Worship Center in St. Francisville.

PAYNE, WALTER KOZZIE
Walter Kozzie Payne, age 85 and a resident of the Thomas community, died at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at his residence. He was retired from the Louisiana Department of Highways and was a member of Thomas First Baptist Church. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth B. and Jeannie Payne of Baton Rouge and J.W. and Carolyn Payne of Thomas; a daughter and son-in-law, Imojean and James W. Crain of Baton Rouge; 11 grandchildren, Mike, Mark and Jim Crain, Lauren, Kent, Clay, Ricky, Keith, Stacy and Clint Payne and Rodney Culpepper; 17 great-grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Maxie and Retus Riles of Baker. preceded in death by his wife, Lonie Thomas Payne; parents, Walter and Frances Payne; a brother, four sisters and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and after 11 a.m. Wednesday until funeral service at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Denny Brumfield and Elder Willie J. Passman officiating. Burial will follow in Thomas cemetery.

PERICH, PH.D. MICHAEL J.
A resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Omaha, Neb., he died at 5 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, in Livingston Parish as the result of an automobile accident. He was 46. Visitation was at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2003. Visitation at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2025 Stuart Ave., from 11 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. Tuesday, celebrated by the Rev. Rich Luberti. Private interment service will take place at a later date. He is survived by his wife, Audrey "Bunni" Hare Perich of Baton Rouge; mother, Rita Cazor Perich of Omaha; a daughter, Sarah V. Perich of Baton Rouge; a sister and brother-in-law, Anita and Bruce Smith of Omaha; three nieces, Amanda, Emily and Kelly Smith, all of Omaha; and godmother, Josephine Kazor of Omaha. He was preceded in death by his father, Andrew Perich. Pallbearers will be Dr. Gene Reagan, Dr. David Boethel, Bobby Tichnell, Andrew McKay, Dr. Boris Castro, Gerado Boquin, Dr. Michael Stout and Capt. Brett Collier. Dr. Michael J. Perich was a world authority in medical entomology with experience working on the major arthropod vectors of human diseases. As assistant professor for the LSU Agricultural Center in the department of entomology, he directed research and extension programs on management of mosquitoes and other medically important insects. He was leading a team of AgCenter, Department of Health and Hospitals and Mosquito Control personnel to investigate West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis outbreaks and establish mosquito abatement programs in Louisiana. In addition to supervising the research of six graduate students and an associate, he was a dedicated teacher of courses in integrated vector management. After receiving his Ph.D. at Okahoma State University in 1985, Dr. Perich began work with the U.S. Army Biomedical Research and Development team, and was Vector Suppression program manager and senior research entomologist for the Walter Reed Army Institute prior to joining the LSU faculty in 2001. He published extensively and received numerous research grants. He was active in the Entomological Society of America and other professional organizations. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Food for the Poor.

PRISER, MARIAN WATTS
A resident of Mandeville, she died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at St. Tammany Parish Hospital. She was 76 and a native of Sun. Visiting at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Ponchatoula, Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Religious service in the funeral home chapel at 7 p.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. Leo Miller. Survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and Ben McHughes and Kathy and Ronnie Lovell, all of Bedico; a son, Roy Desmond Priser, Bedico; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Nolan Watts, Baton Rouge; and two sisters, Helen Bywater, Maringouin, and Audrey Posey, Folsom. preceded in death by her husband, Roy D. Priser; parents, Sullivan and Cecelia Templet Watts; a brother, James Watts; and two sisters, Evelyn Mizell and Genevive Bowling. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer's Association, 1040 Calhoun St., New Orleans, LA 70118.

REED, JIM HODGES
A loving husband, father and grandfather, he passed away peacefully at his home with his family at his side on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003. He was born on Sept. 25, 1931, in Houston and was a resident of Baton Rouge for 27 years. Memorial service at Broadmoor United Methodist Church, 10230 Mollylea Drive, on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, with visitation from 10 a.m. until memorial service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Ken Carroll. He is survived by his loving and caring wife, Carol Reed; two daughters, Linnea Rice and husband Mark of Austin, Texas, and Kim Agosta and husband Scott of Edmond, Okla.; three stepchildren, Laura Bonne and husband David of White Bear Lake, Minn., Karen Taylor of Lewisville, and Gary Dunn and wife Elizabeth of Baton Rouge; three grandchildren, Maggie Agosta, Reed Agosta and Jack Rice; six stepgrandchildren, Andy O'Pry, Daniel Bonne, Cortney Marsh, Carly Bonne, Caroline Dunn and Patrick Dunn. His parents, Jimmie Franklin and Eula Grace Reed, preceded Jim in death. He was a retired regional sales manager for Wyatt Field Services, a member of St. James Masonic Lodge No. 47 and a member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church, where he served as usher for 24 years. Jim was a devoted friend and supporter of Alcoholics Anonymous for more than 28 years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Hospice Group, 5215 Essen Lane, Suite 10, Baton Rouge, LA 70809. The family wishes to acknowledge the support of the St. Joseph Hospice group for whom they will be eternally grateful.

SCHROEDER, CAROLE
She was dedicated mother, grandmother, sister, teacher and friend who brought joy and happiness to all who knew her. A school teacher at Claiborne Elementary, she passed away at her home on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003. She was 64 and a native and resident of Baton Rouge. Visitation at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003. Religious service at the funeral home chapel 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. She is survived by a daughter, Erin René Cronan and husband Jeff; a son, Dennis Rutland Schroeder and wife Leanor; a sister, Brenda Williams and husband Pete; two brothers, Huland Rutland and James "Pepper" Rutland and wife Connie; and grandchildren, Madison Cronan and Andrew Schroeder. preceded in death by her husband Dennis M. Schroeder; and parents, Loyes "Rut" and Bert Rutland. Pallbearers will be Jeff Cronan, Leeland Kilpatrick, Pete Williams, Patrick Schroeder, Michael Schroeder and Justin Schroeder. Honorary pallbearer is Harold Schroeder. She was a member of Louisiana Association of Educators. Memorial donations may be made to Battered Women's Program, P.O. Box 52809, Baton Rouge, LA 70892.

TALBOT, GEORGE DUDLEY
passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2002, at 6 p.m. He was the beloved father and father-in-law of George Jr. and Fran Talbot, Beckie and Jim Huey, Nancy and Dan Shebesta and Bettie Talbot. He was the beloved granddad of Christie Huey Gibson and husband Bobby, Jason and Jeffrey Talbot, and Marcie and Shane Fisher; and the beloved great-granddad of Julian. He is also survived by his brother, Bert Talbot of Napoleonville; his sister, Catherine Talbot Maloney of Lafayette; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends whom he loved dearly as they loved him. George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gloria Politz Talbot; his parents, Aubert and Elizabeth Talbot; a brother, Tom Talbot; and sisters, Lucille Foley, Betty Berniard, Jane Marks and Jo Carmouche. He was a veteran of World War II and a charter member of Boston Club West. With his family and friends he enjoyed his 81 years of life to the fullest. He spent his career in the oilfield supply business with Texaco and Murrey Brooks, and he retired from Republic Supply. Wake at Mothe Funeral Home Inc., 2100 Westbank Expressway, Harvey, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation at St. Anne Catholic Church, Napoleonville, from 11 a.m. until service at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Interment in St. Anne cemetery.

TURNER, JULIA AMALIA
Born Feb. 11, 1922, in McComb, Miss., she died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at home. She was 81 and a resident of Baton Rouge. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. preceded in death by her husband, James Harold Turner; a sister, Mary Alveta Davison; a brother, John "Bill" Piazza; and a daughter, Rhonda Julia "Dean" Courtney. Survived by her son, James Henry "Jim" Turner, Baton Rouge; a daughter, Gail Marlene Turner, Baton Rouge; grandchildren, Phillip Porche, Pensacola, Fla., Scott Rousseau, Denham Springs, Julie Rousseau Walker, Walker, Marla Porche Gonzales, Galvez, and Jill Courtney Brakebill, Baton Rouge; 12 great-grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter and three nieces. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Capital Area Animal Welfare Society or St. Joseph Hospice. Memorial service at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003.

VOLENTINE, STEVEN LEO
A loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and a resident of Eunice, he went to be with our Lord on Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, in Zachary. He was born Jan. 2, 1909, in Grayson and was a longtime member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. He is survived by two daughters, Alice Ann Pocorello and Jeanette Young; two sons-in-law, Raymond Young and Howard Sigler; 13 grandchildren, Farrell, Ronnie, Lonnie and Pete Pocorello, Tammy Lieux, Allen, Roger, Charles, Mark and Jennifer Sigler, Marlene Fries, Jeff Young and Tommy Lynn Hart; 31 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews, including A.J. Douglas. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Marlene Sigler; and a son-in-law, Joseph F. Pocorello Sr. Visitation at Ardoin's Funeral Home, Eunice, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, Richard, from 10 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m. Thursday.
