SKIPPER, EVELYN ROSS
September 6, 2002

Evelyn Ross Skipper, a retired employee of the Orleans Parish School Board, died Aug. 28 at Memorial Medical Center. She was 84. Mrs. Skipper was born in Lutcher and lived in New Orleans for the past 65 years. Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Ross Watson of Chicago and Geraldine Ross Banks of Baton Rouge; and her mother, Florence Barber Ross. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at Caffin Avenue Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1029 Caffin Ave. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Gertrude Geddes Willis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SIMMONS, MARY MOZELLA RICHARDSON
September 6, 2002

Mary Mozella Richardson Simmons, a retired nursing assistant for Dependable Nursing Service, died Thursday at Chalmette Life Care Center. She was 77. Mrs. Simmons was born in Frost and lived in New Orleans for the past 52 years. She received a nursing assistant certification from McCarty Night School. She was a formal member of Queen Vashti Grand Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include four sons, Willie, Louis, Nathaniel and the Rev. Edward C. Simmons Jr.; two daughters, Gladys and Audrey Whittington; 39 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Greater New Home Baptist Church, Family and Activity Center, 1735 Delery St. in New Orleans. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. Cooper Glapion Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SEGUE, LUELLA BURRELL
September 6, 2002

Luella Burrell Segue, a food service manager with the Orleans Parish school system, died Sunday of undetermined causes at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. She was 72. Mrs. Segue was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a member of the New Orleans and State Food Service associations. She was a member of Greater Hill of Zion Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Keith and Wilmer Segue Jr.; three daughters, Fern Patterson, Shelia Hookfin and Wanda Lewis; a sister, Dorothy Alexander Howard; 15 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Greater Hill of Zion Baptist Church, 3020 Florida Ave. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Resthaven cemetery. D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SAWAYA, THE REV. ABRAHAM P. ‘BROTHER PETE'
September 6, 2002

The Rev. Abraham P. "Brother Pete" Sawaya, a minister with the Metropolitan Peace Officer's Association, died Tuesday at Metropolitan Hospice. He was 88. Mr. Sawaya was born in Garyville and lived in Kenner for the past 28 years. Survivors include his wife, Mattie Ridgway; two sons, Wallace S. Sawaya of Haltom City, Texas, and Johnny Sawaya; two daughters, Katherine Sue Sawaya of Bedford, Texas, and Pauline Robertson; two brothers, Norman Bonch of Garyville, and Bob Bonch of Arabi; three sisters, Gloria Windom of Cocoa, Fla., Ruth Jinwright of Arabi and Katie Lancaster of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at Tharp-Sontheimer Laudumiey Funeral Home, 1600 N. Causeway Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Garden of Memories.

ROESCH, HAROLD J.
September 6, 2002

Harold J. Roesch, a retired shipping clerk for C.T.C. Transportation, died Thursday at his home. He was 88. Mr. Roesch was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for the past 27 years. He was a former employee of Columbia Export Packers and States Marine Steamship Co. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 307. Survivors include a sister, Florence Roesch Scaffidi Daughdrill. A Mass will be said today at 1 p.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery No. 2.

MURRAY, LIONEL ‘BOUDREAUX'
September 6, 2002

Lionel "Boudreaux" Murray, a laborer, died Sunday of cancer at University Hospital. He was 42. Mr. Murray was born in New Orleans, and lived in Hahnville and Marrero. Survivors include his companion, Lillie "Kissie" Scott; three daughters, Dana, Bianca and Kimberly Scott; his mother, Evelena Johnson; a brother, Roderick Darensbourg; and two grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Philadelphia Baptist Church, 217 Smith St., Hahnville. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Bethlehem cemetery. Robottom Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

MULLEN, JAMES ‘SID'
September 6, 2002

James "Sid" Mullen, a merchant mariner, died Tuesday of a heart attack at his home. He was 59. Mr. Mullen was born in Easthampton, Mass., and lived in Covington before moving to Bogalusa a year ago. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War and attained the rank of sergeant. Survivors include his wife, Janice Mullen; three sons, Chris, Dieter and Scott Mullen; two stepsons, Michael and Russell Naquin; a stepdaughter, Dawn Naquin; a brother, Bill Mullen; a sister, Paula Mullen; and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 208 Georgia Ave., Bogalusa. Bagnell and Son Funeral Home near Covington is in charge of arrangements.

MITCHELL, JACQUELYN JOHNSON DUMAS
September 6, 2002

Jacquelyn Johnson Dumas Mitchell, a teacher in the Caddo Parish school system in Shreveport and an ordained minister, died Thursday of cancer at Metropolitan Hospice. She was 53. Mrs. Mitchell was born and lived in New Orleans before moving to Shreveport five years ago. She graduated from McDonogh No. 35 High School and Xavier University with a degree in sociology. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was a former human resources staffer at Hibernia National Bank, Bank of New Orleans, Federal Reserve Bank, Gulf Oil Co. and Central Gulf Lines Corp. She founded the Women of Discipline Ministry in New Orleans and several church-based tutoring and outreach programs, including a prison ministry. She was a former member of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church and its Deaconess Board. She was a member of Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Shreveport, where she was a Sunday school teacher, a deaconess and a member of the Women's Ministry. Survivors include her husband, Leroy Mitchell Jr. of Shreveport; two daughters, Lanette Dumas Simmons and Marti A. Dumas; a stepson, Darien W. Mitchell of Chicago; a stepdaughter, Tammy Jackson of Chicago; her mother, Viola B. Johnson; four brothers, Donald Johnson of San Francisco and Craigus, Michael and C. Kenneth Johnson; a sister, Terri Johnson; and four grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Zion Travelers First Baptist Church, 406 Adams St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Park cemetery. Estelle J. Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LOPEZ, BRIAN A.
September 6, 2002

Brian A. Lopez, reprographics engineer for AAMCO, died Thursday of cancer at East Jefferson General Hospital. He was 43. Mr. Lopez was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie. He was a member of the Krewe of Caesar, APA Dart League and BCA Pool League. Survivors include his companion, JoAnn Holland; a son, Joycelyn W. Lopez; a stepson, Jeffery Gaither; two stepdaughters, Michelle Gonzalez and Catherine Marino; a brother, Marc A. Lopez; a sister, Debbie L. Schlumbrecht; and five grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at noon at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will be today from 7 to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Park cemetery.

HENRY, CHARLES J.
September 6, 2002

Charles J. Henry, an educational diagnostician with the Orleans Parish school system, died Saturday of undetermined causes at Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital. He was 59. Mr. Henry was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He graduated from Walter L. Cohen High School, Southern University at New Orleans and Southern University at Baton Rouge. He was an Air Force veteran. He had been vice president of the Inner City Lions Club, founder of the Buddy-Up Cadet program, a volunteer coach with Special Olympics, a Cub Scout leader and a member of the board of advisers at St. Mark's Community Center. He was a member of the American Federation of Teachers, Louisiana Educational Diagnostic Association and United Teachers of New Orleans, and was nominated for the Educational Diagnostician of the Year award in 1995. He was a member of Pleasant Zion Missionary Baptist Church and its Male Choir, and was director of the church's Youth Frill Team. Survivors include his wife, Julia White Henry; a daughter, Charlita Henry Benoit; a brother, James J. Henry Sr.; and a sister, Jean H. Barnes of Atlanta. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Pleasant Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 3317 Toledano St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park. D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HARRIS, DIANE ‘NANNY' PATTERSON
September 6, 2002

Diane "Nanny" Patterson Harris, a machine operator with Intralox Corp., died Friday of an aneurysm at West Jefferson Medical Center. She was 48. Mrs. Harris was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include her husband, Wilma Harris; her mother, Lilly F. Patterson; four brothers, Joseph A. Gaines Jr., Douglas Gaines Sr., Wallace T. Patterson Jr. and Wayne Patterson; and eight sisters, Maryann West of Fayetteville, Ga., Veronica Mitchell of Dallas, Lucille Johnson of Marietta, Ga., Loretta Baker, Patricia Theriot, Bernadette Gaines, Gilda Sanders and Debra Walker. A Mass will be said Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 1210 Gov. Nicholls St. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
