Rev. Louis Bernard Canterbury

Funeral services for Rev. Louis Bernard Canterbury, age 80, will be held Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 2:00 PM in Central Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Dale Strother and Rev. Lavell Spillers officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Arcadia, LA under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Visitation will be held at Central Baptist Church on Saturday beginning at 12:00 PM and extending until service time.

Mr. Canterbury was born August 20, 1931 in Simsboro, LA to Thomas C. “Cal” and Lucy Louise Ballance Canterbury and stepped from life temporal to life eternal, Wednesday, August 24, 2011 in New Orleans, LA, in the presence of a legacy of family members singing “Amazing Grace”, following a prayer of a Godly nurse.

Bernard loved and served his Lord, his wife, his family, and his friends. He loved to laugh, he loved life, and he lived to love. The only things larger than his sense of humor were his heart and his faith. He was a leader of many, servant to One, a loving and supportive husband and father, a grandfather and great-grandfather, a hero to some, and a friend to all.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jo Anna Canterbury of Sarepta, LA; daughter, Julie Everett and husband, Tim of Springhill, LA; sons, Jeff Canterbury and wife, Mary of Homer, LA, Joey Canterbury and wife, Diana of Haynesville, LA, Richard Canterbury and wife, Cindy of Sarepta, LA; sister, Margie Brown and husband, Dale of Sarepta, LA; eight grandchildren, Chris Canterbury, Clay Canterbury, Blake Canterbury and wife, Ashley, Patrick Canterbury and wife, Lindsey, Zachary Taylor, Hannah Everett, Lily Grace Everett, Seleta Canterbury; two great grandchildren, Emmrie Canterbury, Noah Canterbury and special friends, Smiley and Shirley Nehls.

Mr. Canterbury was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers will be grandsons; Dale Brown, Johnny Powell, Smiley Nehls and Bobby Gene Canterbury, honorary pallbearer.

Wilbern Fate Vaughan
(October 21, 1930 - September 4, 2011)

U.S. Veteran

Funeral services for Wilbern Fate Vaughan, age 80, will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, September 9, 2011 in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Springhill, LA with Rev. Gladney Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in Western Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Mr. Vaughan was born October 21, 1930 to Gus and Bertha Sewell Vaughan and died on Sunday, September 4, 2011 in Shreveport, LA. He was a lifelong resident of this area, a veteran, having served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was a former employee of International Paper Company. He also had a career in carpentry work, loved to tend to his garden, shelling peas, picking out pecans, going hunting and fishing. He will be remembered as a loving husband, daddy, grandpa, great-grandpa and uncle.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, N. Alverne Vaughan; daughter, Rebecca Stephens and husband, Jeff of Lake Erling, Stateline Community; son, Rodney Vaughan and wife, Rita of Shongaloo, LA; brother, Elton Vaughan and wife, Lila of Plain Dealing, LA and sister, Lois Flores of Emerson, AR; grandchildren, Danna Flint and husband, Michael; Jamie Morgan; Brian Tannehill and wife, Staci, Kerri Patterson and husband, Larry; and Holli Stephens; great-grandchildren, Laneston, Dakota, Mathew, Drew, Kaci, Karli and a host of nephews, nieces and other loved ones. He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Aurilla Caswell and Thera Belle Modisette; brothers, Burke Vaughan, Arno Vaughan and D. D. Vaughan.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jim Cooper, Jeremy Cooper, Greg Lee, Chris Stewart, Greg Vaughan and David Lowe. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Vaughan, Jonathan Vaughan, Terry Stephens and Mike W. Vaughan.

Charlie D. Burcham
(June 22, 1941 - September 5, 2011)

Graveside services for Mr. Charlie David Burcham, age 70, will be held Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at 10:00 A.M.in the Old Town Cemetery, Haynesville, LA, with Ed Watson officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Haynesville.

Visitation will be held Monday, September 5, 2011 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the funeral home.

Mr. Burcham was born on June 22, 1941 to Willie and Zelma Earnest Burcham in Haynesville, LA and passed away on Monday, September 5, 2011. Charlie was a Brick Mason for 50 years. One of the many things he accomplished that he took great pride in, was that he bricked all of Claiborne Academy, among numerous homes, churches, hospitals and schools in and around the surrounding areas of Claiborne Parish. He worked for Crowell Masonry out of Dardanelle, AR traveling to other states to build Wal-Mart stores. He was preceded in death by his, parents, daughter, Natalie Loraine Burcham, brothers, Huey Burcham, Dickie Burcham, Bill Burcham, and sister, Dorothy Kaylor.

Charlie is survived by Blanche (Betsy) Tinsley Burcham his wife of 24 years; two sons, Greg Burcham and wife, Brenda, of Shreveport and Jason Burcham and wife, Lorie, of Nashville, TN; one stepson, Rusty Johnston of Doyline; ten grandchildren, Austin Burcham, Danielle McCann, Scott Grabener, Bailey Burcham, Zoe Burcham, Brodie Burcham, Derek Johnston, Taylor Johnston, Kelsi Moss, and Tinsley Carpenter; three great grandchildren, Catlin Grabener, Aiden McCann, and Abigail Grabener; sisters, Gladys Emerson of Emerson, AR; Alma Nuckols, Milam, TX; Betty Schmidt, Milam TX; Mildred Pharr, El Dorado, AR; Shirley Dick & husband, James, Beverly Hammon & husband, Frank, all of Homer; brothers, Hershel (Bud) Burcham and wife, Lucy, of Benton; Lloyd Burcham and wife, Jo, of Limerick, ME and his in laws, Leroy and Olarene Tinsley

Pallbearers will be his nephews.

The family wishes to express a sincere thanks to Agape Hospice and especially Lee Jones for there wonderful care over the past few weeks.

Trudie Lea Horton Stroud
(April 29, 1913 - August 15, 2011)

Funeral services for Mrs. Trudie Lea Stroud, age 98, will be held Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 10:00 AM in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. G.R. Collier and Rev. Daphne Roberts officiating. Interment will follow at 2:00 PM in Forest Park East Cemetery, St. Vincent Ave., Shreveport, LA under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Visitation will begin Friday at 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

Mrs. Stroud was born April 29, 1913 in Fisher, LA to William Thomas and Nancy Exa Randolph Horton and went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 15, 2011 in Springhill, LA. She was a resident of Springhill, LA and a former resident of Many, LA. Mrs. Stroud was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Springhill, loved to quilt, sew and cook for her family. She also enjoyed raising a flower garden.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Roberts of Springhill, LA; her son, William Stroud and wife, Patricia of Sarepta, LA; five sisters, Nancy Carroll, Lona Ford, Maggie DuHamel, Billie Hammond, Bobbie Pitt; twelve grandchildren, thirty-two great grandchildren and nineteen great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Stroud was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard H. Stroud; three children, Howard Henry Stroud, Jr., Joan St. Clergy, Frances Bethel; two sisters, Linda Stroud, Annie Howell and son-in-law, John Roberts.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and great grandsons.

(January 22, 1953 - August 29, 2011)

Funeral services for Ms. Sherry Newsom, age 58, will be held Friday, September 2, 2011 at 10:00 AM in New Sarepta Baptist Church with Rev. Marty Wright officiating. Interment will follow in Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery, Shongaloo, LA under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Visitation will begin Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Ms. Newsom was born January 22, 1953 to Prentis Harold and Jeane Byram Newsom and passed away Monday, August 29, 2011 in Bossier City, LA. She was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of New Sarepta Baptist Church and a former employee of Claiborne Parish Health Department.

She is survived by her parents; her grandmother, Edith “Mrs. Jimmie” Byram of Sarepta, LA; her brothers and sisters, Stephen Dean Newsom and wife, Debbie of DeRidder, LA, Sylvia Newsom McKinney and husband, George of Rocky Mt., LA, Stanley W. Newsom and wife, Jane of Sarepta, LA, Susan Newsom Janik and husband, Mark of Houston, TX and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Serving as pallbearers will be Aaron McKinney, Brent Newsom, Mark Newsom, Jared Newsom, Lance Newsom and Chad Newsom.

Bennie Raymond Matlock, Sr
(January 29, 1918 - August 28, 2011)

Funeral services for Mr. Bennie Matlock, Sr., age 93, will be held Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 10:00 AM in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Springhill with Rev. John J. Downs officiating. Interment will follow in Boggs Cemetery, Mott Community under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA.

Visitation will begin Monday at 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

Mr. Matlock was born January 29, 1918 in Plain Dealing, LA to John C. and Elizabeth Gaynor Matlock and passed away Sunday, August 28, 2011 in Farmerville, LA. He was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of Walkers Chapel United Methodist Church and was a supervisor for International Paper Company, tour foreman of shipping department. Mr. Matlock was also a veteran of the WW II US Army Air Corp, 82 Air Borne and was a member of the Banks-Strong American Legion. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He is survived by is son, Bennie R. “Ben” Matlock, Jr. and wife, Sandra; granddaughter, Jana Rodgers; great grandchildren, Tanner and Carly and special family friend, Eloise Cason of Plain Dealing, LA.

Mr. Matlock was preceded in death by is parents, his wife, Mable Irene Matlock; sisters, Myrtice Kilgore, Nettie B. Frazier and brothers, Bernice, Alton, Otis and J.C. Matlock.
