Florine Bailey Slaid

June 30, 1927 - February 27, 2012

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 3, 2012 beginning at 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM.

Mrs. Slaid passed away Monday, February 27, 2012 following a lengthy illness. She was born June 30, 1927 in Haynesville (Gordon), and except for a brief period of time in Houston, Texas, was a lifelong resident of Haynesville. Mrs. Slaid was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, H.U. Mutt Slaid, parents Finis and Julia Bailey, brother, F.C. Bailey, sister, Marie Bailey Copeland, grandson Jarrod Parker, and great-granddaughter Addison Black.

She is survived by her children, Julia Ann and Dr. Loring Buddy Barwick of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Ellen and Lt. Col. (Ret.) David Parker of Minden, and Jack W. Buddy Slaid and Melissa of Sibley. Mrs. Slaid is also survived by her twin sister, Lorine Bailey Dennis of Lafayette, Louisiana.

In addition to Jarrod, Mrs. Slaid had eight grandchildren, Jennifer Barwick Barnett, Julianna Barwick Dollinger, Rachael Parker, Slaid Parker, Lauren Slaid Black, Jonathan Womack (Slaid), Jennifer Womack (Slaid), and Jackson Slaid. In addition to Addison, she had one great-grandchild, Marley Lauren Black.

Mrs. Slaid was a 1944 graduate of Haynesville High School and had a brief working career at Brands Cleaners in Haynesville, where Mr. Slaid discovered her shortly after returning from the war. Mr. and Mrs. Slaid were married on December 7, 1947. Upon their return from Houston, Mr. and Mrs. Slaid owned and operated Service Cleaners until 1968. The Slaids were longtime and faithful workers in the Homer Church of Christ. In their later years together, they attended the Emerson, Arkansas Church of Christ as well, and cherished their associations at both churches.

A talented lady, Mrs. Slaid excelled in many things. She was an accomplished seamstress, loved to crosstitch, and, as Mutt would testify to, had a green thumb which evolved into countless flower pots and plants which had to be moved to safety during freezing weather. She was simply a marvelous cook, particularly a world class pie baker. While Mutt went about his public life, Mrs. Slaid was content as his silent partner, going about her duties as a wife, mother, and homemaker. She was very much a salt of the earth woman. Alzheimers took Mrs. Slaid from her family over recent history even before the Lord took her home. The memory of her in better days will be cherished.

Serving as pallbearers will be Keith Kilgore, Jonathan Womack (Slaid), Slaid Parker, Ken Bailey, Randy Merritt and Dr. Loring "Buddy" Barwick.
