Eluida May Hoffpauir Flanakin

May 16, 1911 - January 16, 2011

Eluida May Hoffpauir Flanakin was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on May 16, 1911, the daughter of Ellis Aaron Hoffpauir and Leona Hanley Hoffpauir. Her mother died when Eluida was a year old and she was sent to be raised by her grandparents, Rev. James Ivy Hoffpauir and Julia Anne Spell Hoffpauir. Rev. Hoffpauir was a Methodist minister whose family home was in Indian Bayou, Louisiana.

When she was thirteen, she moved to Jackson, Mississippi, to live with her father and stepmother, Edith Tomlinson Hoffpauir. She graduated from Jackson Central High School and enrolled at Belhaven College, where she spent two years. She then spent a year at Scarritt College in Nashville, Tennessee, studying to be a missionary but she was not old enough to be certified, so she returned to Jackson. Less than a year later she was called by Miss Ella Hooper to join her and her sister Wilhemina Hooper to work at a mission in Dulac, Louisiana [https://dulaccommunitycenter.org/], as a volunteer teacher and housekeeper with the Houma Indians [https://www.unitedhoumanation.org/node/3] there who had been excluded from public schools because of their mixed blood heritage. The Houmas only spoke French, so Eluida and the Hooper sisters began teaching them English and Scripture. She stayed there three years except during the summers she attended Louisiana Normal (now Northwestern State University) to work on her bachelors in education.

One day Miss Hoffpauir received a call to teach third grade in Shongaloo, Louisiana. Eluida always noted that she never applied for a job as an adult she was always offered one. She taught in Shongaloo and continued in school in the summers until she graduated, and then was offered a job teaching English, Spanish, and who knows what else at Springhill High School. One night she went to the local movie theater and was tripped by a handsome young man Bernice Eugene Flanakin. They were both members at the Springhill Methodist Church, and though they were in a large circle of singles, they were drawn together and became engaged.

Then on Bernices birthday, December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Bernice was called into the military, and they were married on February 14, 1942. He was sent to Camp Wolters in Mineral Wells, Texas, and their only child, Duggan Eugene Flanakin, was born there on September 20, 1944. After the war the couple and child returned to Springhill, Louisiana, where Bernice went back to work for International Paper Company as an accountant and Eluida returned to teaching at Springhill High School. Eluida retired from teaching in May 1972, and Bernice retired when the company closed the paper mill in Springhill in 1980. The couple traveled around the world to Australia and New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong (and Japan), to Europe (notably Italy and the Netherlands).

Eluida was during her career the advisor to the Student Council, Pelican Girls and Boys State, and more. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and became Admiral Flanakin, the state president of the organization. She also was involved with the Springhill Civic Club and served as its president. She taught Sunday School at the Baxter Class at the Springhill United Methodist Church until well after her 90th birthday. She was also an active member of a local writers group and had many other interests, and she was a crackerjack bridge player.

When Bernice fell to a heart attack while carrying the American flag for the American Legion during the Christmas parade on November 30, 1991, Eluida carried on. At the age of 80, she drove 350 miles to Baton Rouge that Christmas to be with her son and his children at the saddest of times. She was there for her son and his wife Nancy Dawson Flanakin when their daughter (Eluidas granddaughter) Susan Rebecca Flanakin passed away in May 2002. She was there for Duggan when his beloved Nancy passed away on December 1, 2007. She had just moved to Austin, Texas, to be with Duggan and Nancy and remained there for the rest of her days, becoming just as beloved in Austin as she was in Springhill, Shongaloo, and everywhere else her feet touched earth. She is surely beloved in heaven now.

At the age of 89, Eluida traveled to the Holy Land with a group partly from her church. She walked the Via Della Rosa, dipped her toe into the Dead Sea, climbed to Masada (the Jewish Alamo of sorts), and walked where Jesus walked around the Sea of Galilee. Her only regret was not getting to ride a camel. She only wanted three things in life that were beyond her grasp black hair like her mothers, a golden singing voice as she so loved music and singing, and to travel to Alaska, the only U.S. state she never got to visit. Okay, she also wanted to ride that camel.

For her ninetieth birthday, the people of Springhill threw a big party in her honor at the Springhill United Methodist Church, and she had birthday parties in Springhill of note for her 96th birthday (coordinated by co-conspirators Del Balentine, Martha Jo Balentine, and Idell Simms) and again for her 99th birthday (with the same co-conspirators at work). For her 97th birthday, Eluida was honored at the Clanton Chapel United Methodist Church in Dulac for her missionary work 75 years earlier. Her last visit to Springhill was in December 2010, and it, too, was a continual feast.

Eluida leaves behind a legacy that others will recount for years to come. Her son Duggan, an executive with an international nonprofit organization, is still in Austin, Texas. Granddaughter Payton Erin Flanakin McCloskey, a registered nurse, lives in San Benito, Texas, with her husband Chester and their sons July and Evan. Granddaughter Genevieve Marie Flanakin Young lives currently in Tucson, Arizona, with her husband Raymond and their son Abraham; she is in her third year of pharmacy school. Granddaughter Melody Anne Flanakin Cornelius, a hydrogeologist, lives in Houston, Texas, with her son Caleb; big things are happening in her life.

Eluidas brother William Ivy Hoffpauir left behind three children, Eluidas nieces and nephew Catherine Hoffpauir Nesbitt, who lives in Jacksonville, Florida; Debra Hoffpauir Robison, who lives in Tupelo, Mississippi; and William (Billy) Hoffpauir, who lives in Merritt Island, Florida.

The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the Springhill United Methodist Church, 104 4th Street, Springhill, Louisiana, with visitation beginning at the church at noon, on Friday, January 21st. Interment will be at the Springhill Cemetery immediately following; Eluida will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband. Eluidas friends in Austin, Texas, are planning a celebration of her life sometime in February 2011; details of this event and stories of Eluidas life and her impact on the lives of so many others will be posted on her Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/GrannyFlan. Please feel free to post your own memories and photos of Eluida on her page.

In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to Eluidas favorite charity, the Louisiana Methodist Childrens Home in Ruston, Louisiana.
