Monsignor Rosario L.U. Montcalm, 89

SOUTH HADLEY -- The Rev. Monsignor Rosario L.U. Montcalm, 89, of 47 Pinegrove Drive, native of Worcester, retired military chaplain and pastor, died Monday, Feb. 4, in Holyoke Hospital.

He leaves a brother, Ulric R. "Sonny" Montcalm of the Aldenville section of Chicopee; and several nephews and nieces. Three sisters predeceased him, Leonie M. Sullivan in 1999, Claire B. Montcalm in 1997 and Aline L. Montcalm in 1988. He was born in Worcester, son of Ulric and Blanche D. (Monty) Montcalm. He entered the Seminary of St. Hyacinth in Quebec and then attended St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore. He was ordained at St. Michael's Cathedral, Springfield, in 1936. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and continued to serve after the war, retiring with the rank of colonel in 1965.

Rev. Montcalm was stationed at St. Joseph's Church, Worcester, from 1936 to 1942. He then served at Precious Blood Church, Holyoke. After retirement from the military, he was pastor of St. John's Church in Millers Falls and then transferred to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Holyoke. He served as diocesan consultor, diocesan scouting chaplain and diocesan director of hospitals, all in Springfield. He retired from the active pastorate in 1984. He then assisted parishes in Massachusetts and held several memberships.

A concelebrated funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in Sacred Heart Church at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Maple and Sergeant streets, Holyoke. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. He will lie in state from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in the church. Memorial donations may be made to College of Our Lady of the Elms, 291 Springfield St., Chicopee, MA 01013; or to the Foundation of the Diocese of Springfield, 65 Elliot St., Springfield, MA 01101-1730. Arthur J. Brunelle Funeral Home, 811 Chicopee St., Willimansett section of Chicopee, is directing arrangements.

Ruth Morgan, 93

ESSEX, Vt. -- Ruth (Smith) Morgan, 93, of Essex, formerly of the Whitinsville section of Northbridge, Mass., died Tuesday, Feb. 5, in Green Mountain Nursing Home, Colchester.

She leaves a daughter, Paula Morgan Duke of Essex, with whom she lived; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces, including Jonathan Smith of Whitinsville. Three brothers, Oscar, Alfred and Ralph Smith, and five sisters, Harriet Blanchard, Grace Miller, Thyra Eastman, Ethel and Marion Smith, predeceased her. She was born in Whitinsville, daughter of Alfred M. and Jane (Hayes) Smith, and moved to Essex to live with her daughter after suffering a stroke in 1996.

Mrs. Morgan was a teacher before retiring.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in First Congregational Church of Essex Junction, 39 Main St. Burial will be at the family's convenience in Pine Grove Cemetery, Whitinsville. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in the church's Marvin Lounge. Memorial donations may be made to Essex Rescue, PO Box 124, Essex Junction, VT 05452. Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax, is directing arrangements.

Philomena A. Morse, 89

WEBSTER -- Philomena A. (Hoenig) Morse, 89, of Webster, a longtime restaurant owner, died Monday, Jan. 28, in Hubbard Regional Hospital.

She leaves her husband of 64 years, Eudore J. "Ted" Morse; a son, Richard E. Morse of Thompson; two daughters, Norma P. Wadewitz of Holliston and Sandra E. Carmell of Palm City, Fla.; a brother, Andrew F. Hoenig of Thompson; two sisters, Anna M. Steele and Elaine R. Krommer, both of Webster; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A brother, William Hoenig, and a sister, Margaret E. Ziarko, predeceased her. She was born in Webster, daughter of Christian and Anna (Zimmerer) Hoenig, and graduated from St. Louis High School in 1929.

Mrs. Morse was a hostess and co-owner of the Colonial Club Restaurant. With her husband, she opened the Thompson Road location in 1945. She retired in 1982 but continued to collaborate in daily functions of the restaurant, now operated by her son and grandson.

She was a member of St. Louis Parish and formerly sang in its choir. Mrs. Morse was a member of the Webster-Dudley-Oxford Chamber of Commerce, Hubbard Regional Hospital Guild, the Hummell Society, the Audubon Society and the Arbor Society.

The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in St. Louis Church, 14 Lake St. After cremation, burial will be at the family's convenience in Calvary Cemetery, Dudley. Calling hours are 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, in Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School St. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Louis Church, 15 Lake St., Webster, MA 01570; or to St. Louis School Endowment Fund, 15 Lake St., Webster, MA 01570.

Anna M. Murphy, 66
Sunday, January 27, 2002

WORCESTER -- Anna M. (O'Rourke) Murphy, 66, of 11 Lake St., formerly of 88 Sears Island Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 26, in the Hermitage Nursing Center, after an illness.

Her husband, Bernard L. Murphy, died in 1985. She leaves nephews, including Timothy O'Rourke of Worcester and John Storms of Auburn, and nieces, including Mary Brosnahan of Worcester. A brother, Hugh O'Rourke, and two sisters, Sabina Chesna and Helen J. Stuczko, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Hugh F. and Anastasia H. (Rafferty) O'Rourke.

Mrs. Murphy worked on the housekeeping staff at the Wayside Nursing Home for many years, retiring in 1987. She enjoyed playing beano and pinochle. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish.

The funeral will be Tuesday, Jan. 29, from the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 353 Grove St. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or to the American Diabetes Association, Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150.

Frieda E. Neumann, 87

YOUNGSVILLE, N.Y. -- Frieda E. (Arendt) Neumann, 87, of Youngsville, formerly of Lancaster, Mass., died Friday, Feb. 1, at River Terrace Healthcare, Lancaster.

She leaves her husband, George Neumann; a daughter, Judith Gray of Weaverville, N.C; a daughter, Susan Kraycer of Liberty, N.Y.; a son, Lawrence Neumann of Lancaster; a brother, Arthur Arendt; twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. A brother, Kenneth Arendt of Yucaipa, Calif., predeceased her. She was born in New Britain, Conn.

Mrs. Neuman was active in church both in Youngsville and Kingston, as organist and teacher in the children's divisions. She was a den mother, Girl Scout leader, member of Youngsville Ladies Aid and PTA. She took over her husband's office job when he was called into World War II, and later worked with him at Yaun Company in Liberty, N.Y., for 17 years until her retirement.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, Leominster Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 445 Union St. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Adventist Development and Relief Agency International, P.O. Box 4289, Silver Springs, MD 20914, or to a charity.

Lucile E. O'Connor, 71

LEOMINSTER -- Lucile E. (St. Cyr) O'Connor, 71, of 32 Naples St., a retired bookkeeper, died Monday, Jan. 28, at home after a long illness.

She leaves her husband of 41 years, Timothy J. O'Connor; and a son, Kevin M. O'Connor of Leominster. She was born in Leominster, daughter of George and Blanche (Filteau) St. Cyr, and graduated from Leominster High School in 1948.

Mrs. O'Connor was a bookkeeper for 18 years at Fitchburg Plumbing Co. before retiring.

After cremation, the funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in St. Anna Church, 199 Lancaster St. There are no calling hours. Wright-Roy Funeral Home, 109 West St., is directing arrangements.

Robert L. Oldread, 85

AUBURN -- Robert L. Oldread, 85, of 191 South St., a World War II veteran and a retired foreman, died Friday, Feb. 1, in the Lutheran Home of Worcester.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Norma E. (Anderson) Oldread; a son, Robert W. Oldread of Peaks Island, Maine; a daughter, Lesley A. Davis of Auburn; a sister, Elizabeth Nappa of West Brookfield; five grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Saco, Maine, son of Walter and Ethel (Hearn) Oldread, and lived many years in Auburn. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant in Asia.

Mr. Oldread was a foreman at Crompton & Knowles Co., Worcester, where he worked 33 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Worcester.

After cremation, a graveside service will be held at a later date in All Faiths Cemetery, Worcester. There are no calling hours.

Please omit flowers. Donations may be made to Emanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 200 Greenwood St., Worcester, 01607. Lindquist-Lundin Funeral Home, 36 Butler St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.

Michael B. O'Neil, 27

PROVIDENCE -- Michael B. O'Neil, 27, of Killingly Street, formerly of Worcester, Mass., died Saturday, Jan. 26, at home.

He leaves his parents, Henry O'Neil Sr. of North Providence and Cheryl (Polselli) Auger of Shrewsbury, Mass.; a sister, Dawn O'Neil of North Providence; a brother, Henry O'Neil Jr. of Johnston; a half-brother, Brandon Auger of Shrewsbury; two half-sisters, Ashley and Alissa Auger, both of Shrewsbury; three stepbrothers, Michael, Jeremy and Shawn Auger, all of Douglas, Mass.; his paternal grandmother, Irene O'Neil of North Providence; a niece and a nephew. He was born in Worcester

Mr. O'Neil was a truck driver for Material, Sand and Stone Corp., North Smithfield, the past five years. Previously, he worked for Certus Trucking Co., Shrewsbury.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, from Mariani Funeral Home, 200 Hawkins St., with a service at 11 a.m. in St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 1964 Smith St., North Providence. Burial will be private. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the funeral home.

Grace M. O'Toole, 78

CLINTON -- Grace M. (Maitland) O'Toole, 78, of 41 Mount View Drive, a retired nurse, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus, Worcester, after an illness.

Her husband, John C. O'Toole, died in 1994. She leaves two sons, Kevin J. and William A. O'Toole, both of Clinton; a daughter, Maureen A. Severns of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was born in Clinton, daughter of William and Mary (Casey) Maitland, and graduated from Clinton High School in 1941 and Mount Auburn Hospital School of Nursing in Cambridge in 1944.

She was a registered nurse for 35 years at Clinton Hospital, retiring in 1986. She was previously a private duty nurse for several years.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, the Massachusetts Nurses Association, and the Clinton Senior Citizens and its Bridge Club.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Feb. 9, from Robert J. McNally Funeral Home, 304 Church St., with Mass at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Lancaster. Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Philip T. Payson, 40

FITCHBURG -- Philip T. Payson, 40, of 50 Day St., died Sunday, Feb. 3, at home after being stricken ill.

He leaves his parents, Irene M. (Gagne) Payson and Albert S. Payson III, of Fitchburg; a brother, Albert S. Payson IV of Pennsylvania; his paternal grandmother, Jennie Payson of Fitchburg; nieces and nephews. He was born in Fitchburg, where he lived all his life.

Mr. Payson worked as a maintenance man and also for Heartland supermarket. He owned and operated Phil's Lawn Service of Fitchburg for 15 years. He was a member of St. Bernard's Church.

He was an avid fisherman and coin collector.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, in Our Lady's Chapel of St. Bernard's Church, 228 Water St., with a Mass at a time to be announced. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to North County Kidney Center, 551 Electric Ave., Fitchburg, MA 01420; or to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 968, Framingham, MA 01701. Lavery-Chartrand Funeral Home, 99 Summer St, is directing the arrangements.

Harry L. Jolly, 87

OXFORD -- Harry L. Jolly, 87, of Oxford, a World War II veteran and a retired business owner and operator, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus, Worcester, after a long illness.

His wife of 54 years, Pearl E. (King) Jolly, died in 1992. He leaves a daughter, Judith Ann Howard of Schoharie, N.Y.; a sister, Eva White of Florida; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Two brothers, Joseph Jolly of Mexico and Leo Jolly of Texas, predeceased him. He was born in Oxford, son of Adelard and Louise (Lamoreux) Jolly, and graduated from Oxford High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a technician fifth grade.

Mr. Jolly owned and operated Jolly's Esso Station, Webster, for more than 60 years before retiring. He was a board member of Oxford Housing for the Elderly and a member of Oxford Senior Center and St. Roch's Church.

The graveside service will be held at a later date in St. Roch's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity. Paradis Funeral Home, 357 Main St., is directing arrangements.

Edward J. McKeown
Thursday, January 31, 2002

FITCHBURG -- Edward J. McKeown, 65, of 69 High St., died Wednesday, Jan. 30, at his home, after an illness.

He leaves a son, John E. McKeown of Tahoe City, Calif.; two daughters, Colleen Ramsdell of Worcester and Cathleen Carson of Truckee, Calif.; a brother, David McKeown of Worcester; two grandchildren; and a nephew. He was born in Worcester, son of David and Margaret (McNally) McKeown. He served in the Navy.

Mr. McKeown was a cash register repairman for National Cash Register.

The funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, in Wright-Roy Funeral Home, 109 West St., Leominster. Burial will be private. Calling hours are 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Veterans Hospice Homestead, 69 High St., Fitchburg, MA 01420.
