Dorothy A. Maines

LEOMINSTER- Dorothy A. (Deyo) Maines, of Leominster, formerly of Athol, a Korean War veteran, died Friday, March 22, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital.

She leaves her son, Steve M. Maines of Leominster; a brother, James Deyo of Littleton, Colo.; nieces and nephews. Four brothers, Edward, Herbert, George and Robert Deyo; and five sisters, Elizabeth Mallet, Evelyn Sweeney, Shirley Deyo, Mildred Deyo and Eleanor Reger, predeceased her. She was born in Athol, daughter of Edward and Eona (Pelkey) Deyo, and lived in Leominster for the last three years. She graduated from Athol High School and served in the Navy during the Korean War.

She worked as an inspector for 16 years at UTD Tool Co. in Athol. Later, she worked at Victory Supermarket for three years. She was a communicant of Our Lady Immaculate Church in Athol, and enjoyed collecting lighthouse figurines.

After cremation, a Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. Committal will take place at a later date in the family lot in Gethsemane cemetery in Athol. Hickey-Grenier Funeral Home, 238 Court St., Brockton, is directing arrangements.

Percy W. Manuel, 91,

LANCASTER- Percy W. Manuel, 91, of 67 Bigelow Road, a retired college president and pastor, died Thursday, March 28, at home after a long illness.

His wife of 56 years, Lulu E. (Leech) Manuel, predeceased him. He leaves a daughter, Carol Hawley of Lancaster, with whom he lived; two sisters; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A son, Kenneth Manuel, died in 1988. He was born in Brantford, Ontario, son of Beniah and Lulu (Percy) Manuel. He graduated from Canadian Missionary College Academy, Washington Missionary College and Columbia Teachers College.

After college, Mr. Manuel served as minister of several Seventh-day Adventist churches. In 1947, he became president of Caribbean Union College in Trinidad, West Indies. He later was president of Kingsway College in Oshawa, Ontario. After retiring, he was a pastor at many churches, including some in the Hendersonville, N.C., area. He was a member of Sterling Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, in Sterling Seventh-day Adventist Church, Route 12, Sterling. Burial will be at the family's convenience in Shepherd Memorial Park, Hendersonville. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., Clinton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Manuel Scholarship endowments at Caribbean Union College or Kingsway College, c/o Sterling Seventh-day Adventist Church, Route 12, Sterling, MA 01564.

Josephine E. Marcil, 96

GARDNER- Josephine E. (King) Marcil, 96, of 83 Central St., died Saturday, March 30, in Heywood Hospital.

Her husband, Oscar Marcil, died in 1974. She leaves a daughter, Elizabeth Marcil, with whom she lived; nieces; great-nieces and great-nephews. She was born in Hadley, daughter of Michael and Mary King, and lived in Boston, New York, and Jaffrey, N.H., before moving to Gardner in 1944. She graduated from Holyoke Hospital School of Nursing, and did post-graduate study at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

Mrs. Marcil was a private duty nurse in New York in Boston. She was a member of Holy Rosary Church, the Red Cross, and was once very active with the Girl Scouts.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, April 3, from her residence, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St. Burial will follow in St. Michael's cemetery in Springfield. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in her residence. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery, c/o Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St., Gardner, MA 01440. Lamoureux-Fletcher Community Funeral Home, 105 Central St., is handling arrangements.

Joan D. Marier, 62

HOLDEN- Joan D. (Clark) Marier, 62, of 90 Homestead Road, formerly of Leominster, a retired secretary, died Sunday, March 24, in UMass Memorial Medical Center - Memorial Campus, after an illness.

She leaves her husband of 37 years, Francis B. Marier; three daughters, Susan J. Marier of Holden, Diane J. Johnstone of Worcester and Sandra J. Stockwell of Leicester; six brothers, Alan Clark of Seabrook, N.H., Kenneth Clark of Fitchburg, Ronald Clark of Ashby, Peter, David and Douglas Clark, all of Leominster; a sister, Judith Atwood of Leominster; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A brother, Arthur R. Clark Jr., predeceased her. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Arthur R. and Dorothy R. (Bartholomew) Clark Sr., and lived in Leominster before moving to Holden more than 30 years ago.

Mrs. Marier was a secretary for more than 20 years at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Field Office, retiring last year.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 28, in Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., Leominster. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Leominster. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Melvin G. Massucco Sr., 76, was Holy Cross coach

WORCESTER -- Melvin G. "Mel" Massucco Sr., 76, of 57 Copperfield Road, and Jackson, N.H., died Saturday, March 23, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center.

He leaves his wife of 48 years, Joan E. (Howard) Massucco; three sons, Melvin G. Massucco Jr. and Mark H. Massucco, both of Worcester, and David R. Massucco of Moravian Falls, N.C.; a daughter, Jane E. Robertson of Princeton; three brothers, Edward Massucco of Arlington, Albert Massucco of Hollywood, Fla., and Arthur Massucco of Lynn; eight grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. He was born in Arlington, son of Joseph and Rose (Mangene) Massucco, and lived several years in Waltham before moving to Worcester in 1963. He served two years in the Merchant Marines, in the South Pacific. He then joined the Army and served in Italy during World War II.

After the war, he attended Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. He later attended the College of the Holy Cross, and was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals of the National Football League.

He served on the athletic staff of the University of Massachusetts for two years, and was later a football coach at the College of the Holy Cross and WPI. He also announced on radio broadcasts of the Holy Cross football team.

He was a member of Christ the King Parish, the Alumni Sodality of Our Lady at the College of the Holy Cross, the Tatnuck American Legion Post, the Gridiron Club, and the National Football Coaches Association.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, March 27, from Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in the funeral home. The Alumni Sodality will conduct its ritual at 7 p.m. during the calling hours. Donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38103 or Christ the King Church Building Fund, 1052 Pleasant St., Worcester, MA 01602.

Elaine McCormack, 52

NORTHBORO- Elaine (Hayden) McCormack, 52, formerly of Northboro and Shrewsbury, died Sunday, March 17, in Anderson, Ind., in a private plane crash. Funeral arrangements, under the direction of Leland-Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main St., are incomplete.

LEOMINSTER- Mary L. (Wyman) McDonough, 76, of 476 Grant St., died Thursday, March 21, in Holden Nursing Home in Holden.

Her husband, Robert T. McDonough, died in 1986. She leaves a daughter, Margaret Watts of Lancaster; a brother, John Wyman of Gardner and Florida; and two grandchildren, Sarah and Jonathan Watts, both of Lancaster. She was born in Leominster, daughter of Donald and Margaret (Miller) Wyman.

She was a member of Holy Family of Nazareth Church, and was an adviser for its CYC.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, March 26, from Wright-Roy Funeral Home, 109 West St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Holy Family of Nazareth Church, 800 Union St. After cremation, burial will be in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 25, in the funeral home.

Donald C. McLellan, 61

MARLBORO- Donald C. McLellan, 61, of 76 Church St., a Vietnam War veteran, died Monday, March 25, in Marlboro Hospital, after he was stricken ill at home.

He leaves two sons, Mark D. McLellan of Marlboro and Kevin M. McLellan of Marlboro; three brothers, James M. McLellan of Shrewsbury, Neil D. McLellan of Rutland and Charles P. McLellan of Marlboro; two sisters, Catherine A. Fitzpatrick of Marlboro and Florence M. McNiff of Marlboro; nieces and nephews. A sister, Christine M. Pappas, died in 1999. He was born in Marlboro, son of John N. and Florence C. (Chisholm) McLellan. He graduated from Marlboro High School. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, and was a crew member on an aircraft that was in more than 25 missions in the combat zone or over hostile territory.

Mr. McLellan owned and operated M&M Sheet Metal Inc. in Hudson for more than 18 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Riverside Rod and Gun Club of Hudson, and the Hudson Elks. He was an avid sportsman, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and archery.

The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, from John P. Rowe Funeral Home, Inc., 57 Main St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 11 Prospect St. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 1, in the funeral home. Flowers may be sent or donations made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Charles M. Melesky, 56

WARREN- Charles M. Melesky, 56, of 291 North St., West Warren, a Korean War veteran, died Monday, March 18, in West Roxbury Veterans Administration Hospital, after a short illness.

He leaves his wife, Patricia L. (Fitzpatrick) Melesky; a daughter, Alicia Melesky of West Warren; a stepdaughter, Erin Tresider of Worcester; a stepson, Shawn Brennan of Houston; his mother and stepfather, Lillian (Prefontaine) Wentzell and Arthur A. Wentzell Jr. of Westboro; his father and stepmother, Raymond J. and Katherine Melesky of Worcester; three brothers, Robert A. Wentzell of Brookfield, David Melesky of Northbridge and James Melesky in Florida; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, and graduated from Westboro High School, Worcester Junior College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Melesky was a foreman at Wyman-Gordon Co., North Grafton. He was a member of West Warren St. Stanislaus Society and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, West Warren. He enjoyed hiking and biking, and was a baseball fan.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 22, in Pillsbury Funeral Home, Old West Brookfield Road, Brookfield. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 21, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Central Massachusetts Veterans Shelter, 69 Grove St., Worcester, MA 01605.

WARREN- The funeral service for Charles M. Melesky, 56, of 291 North St., West Warren, who died Monday, March 18, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 22, in Pillsbury Funeral Home, Old West Brookfield Road, Brookfield. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 21, in the funeral home.

He leaves his wife, Patricia L. Raymond J. Melican, 90

PAXTON- Raymond J. Melican, 90, of 6 Holbrook Lane, a World War II veteran, died Sunday, March 31, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center, Worcester.

His wife of 28 years, Katherine (McCarthy) Melican, died in 1974. He leaves two sons, Bernard J. and Denis Melican, both of Paxton; four daughters, Susan E. Melican of Paxton, Margaret M. Melican of Worcester, Elizabeth Odell of Kodiak, Alaska, and Clare E. Rhodes of San Jose, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Two sisters, Isabel and Louise Melican, both of Arlington, and a brother, Walter J. Melican of Watertown, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Denis and Susan E. (Hurley) Melican, and lived in Lowell and Somerville before moving to Paxton in 1956. He graduated from Lowell High School and Boston College. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a chief petty officer with the Seabees in Attu, Alaska.

Mr. Melican was an information officer for the Department of Defense for 35 years. He worked at the Boston Naval Shipyard, Fort Devens and Hanscom Field before retiring. He was a member of Paxton American Legion Post 306 and Disabled American Veterans and was active on the reunion committee for the Navy's 114th Construction Battalion. He enjoyed reading and traveling.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, April 3, from Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 600 Cambridge St., Worcester. Burial will be in Mooreland Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nazareth Home for Boys, 77 Mulberry St., Leicester, MA 01524.

Margaret Markarian

WORCESTER -- Margaret (Kalashian) Markarian, 94, of 24 Maxdale Road, a survivor of the Armenian Genocide, died Monday, March 25, in UMass Memorial Medical Center - Memorial Campus, after a long illness.

Her husband of 30 years, Peter M. Markarian, died in 1962. She leaves a daughter, Marguerite A. Markarian of Worcester; nephews and a niece; great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces; a great-great grandnephew and great-great grandnieces. Three brothers and four sisters predeceased her. She was born in Armenia, daughter of Sarkis S. and Theresa (Mooshoian) Kalashian, and survived the 1915 genocide of the Armenian people by the Turkish Ottoman Empire. She lived in Connecticut before moving to Worcester many years ago. She attended Commerce High School.

Mrs. Markarian was a supervisor, buyer and merchandiser at the former FW Woolworth Co. before retiring. She was a member of the Armenian Church of Our Saviour.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 30, in Armenian Church of Our Saviour, 87 Salisbury St. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. A calling hour is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 30, in Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Armenian Church of Our Saviour, 87 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA 01609.
