Alfred J. Halko, 78

WEBSTER - Alfred J. Halko, 78, of 20 Kingsbury Road, a World War II veteran and a retired carpenter, died Tuesday, June 11, in Hubbard Regional Hospital.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth C. (Lariviere) Halko; three sons, Stephen J. Halko of Pacific Grove, Calif., James C. Halko of Burlington and Joseph P. Halko of Northboro; three daughters, Elizabeth A. Danforth of Oxford, Nancy P. Paul of Alpharetta, Ga., and Mary Ellen Stockdale of Dudley; two brothers, Henry S. Halko of Chestnut Hill and Ronald Halko of Amherst; three sisters, Jennie B. Claprood, Angela Spahl and Teresa Kaliszewski, all of Webster; nine grandchildren; six great - grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Two sisters, Stella Rizzo and Sophie Bastolla, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Alexander and Anna (Kulbacki) Halko, and lived most of his life in the Webster - Oxford area. He graduated from Bartlett High School in 1942 and was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a technical sergeant in the Pacific.

Mr. Halko was a carpenter for Francis Harvey & Sons, Worcester, for 20 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Knights of Columbus Oxford Council 1492 and Carpenters Union Local 107 in Worcester. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and bird watching.

The funeral will be held Friday, June 14, from Scanlon Funeral Service, East Main Street, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 18 East Main St. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 13, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or to Worcester County Horticultural Society, PO Box 598, Boylston, MA 01505.

Lorraine G. Harrigan

ATHOL - Lorraine G. (Moran) Harrigan, 75, of 739 Daniel Shays Highway, died Sunday, June 9, in Quabbin Valley Healthcare after an illness.

She leaves her husband of 53 years, Francis W. Harrigan; a son, Francis Harrigan of Gardiner, Maine; two grandchildren; a sister, Pauline Gravelle of Westminster; several nieces and nephews. She was born in Leominster, daughter of William and Stella (Begnoche) Moran, and was raised in Fitchburg. She graduated from Fitchburg High School. She lived many years in Pearl River, N.Y., and moved to Athol in 1986.

Mrs. Harrigan was assistant manager of the Monsey branch of the Bank of New York, retiring in 1984. Previously, she worked for the Rockland County National Bank in Pearl River, and the Safety Fund National Bank in Fitchburg. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, and at one time was a member of the Pearl River, N.Y., Junior Women's Club. She enjoyed crocheting quilts, and liked music.

A memorial Mass will be held in St. Francis of Assisi Church at a later date. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity. J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St. (www.murphysfuneralhome.com), is directing arrangements.

Irene Holmes, 100

FITCHBURG - Irene (Remse) Holmes, 100, of 360 Electric Ave., formerly of 30 Harugari St., died Thursday, June 6, in Mariner Health Care.

Her husband was the late James Holmes. She leaves two nieces, Carol Remse of Fitchburg and Sally Blodget of Cape Cod; and a nephew, David Remse of Lunenburg. Two sons, Kenneth and Vernon Holmes; four brothers, Arthur, Ernest, Russell and Walter Remse; and two sisters, Hertha and Flora Remse, predeceased her. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Louis and Ida (Haschig) Remse, and lived most of her life here and in Westminster. She was educated in Fitchburg schools.

Mrs. Holmes was a homemaker.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, in Aubuchon - Moorcroft Funeral Home, 132 Woodland St. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery, Westminster. A calling hour is 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, in the funeral home.

Elbert L. Houghton, 77

WORCESTER - Elbert L. "Al" Houghton, 77, of 36 Claridge Road, died Sunday, June 9, at home after an illness. Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Hammond St. (www.royfuneral.com), is directing arrangements, which are incomplete.

Eli P. Kahkola, 85

WESTMINSTER - Eli P. Kahkola, 85, of 13 Elliot St., a retired auto body repairman and World War II veteran, died Wednesday, June 5, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital after a long illness.

He leaves his wife, Aili (Hintila) Kahkola; a daughter, Aileen Hecht of Severna Park, Md.; three grandchildren; six great - grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A brother, Eino Kahkola, and three sisters, Anna Klemetti, Elma Foure and Ellen Aitolla, predeceased him. His twin sister also predeceased him. He was born in Westminster, son of Peter and Mary (Orava) Kahkola, and graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1935. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a technician fourth grade and participating in the Philippine liberation.

Mr. Kahkola was a auto body repairman, most recently for Central Auto Body in Leominster. He was a member of the Finnish Dance Club.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in the Westminster Chapel of Sawyer - Miller - Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 123 Main St. Burial will be at a later date in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to Westminster Fire Rescue, 7 South St., Westminster, MA 01473.

Sister Kalinowski, 86

PHILADELPHIA - Sister Mary Leonard Kalinowski, 86, of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family, formerly of Charlton, Mass., known in secular life as Bernice Kalinowski, died Friday, May 17, in the Mount Nazareth Home.

She leaves two sisters, Helen M. Walker of Auburn, Mass., and Mary A. Ranck of Sparks, Nev.; nephews and nieces. Three sisters, Sister Mary Fidelis, Stasia Norquist and Stephanie Niccolls, and a brother, John Kalinowski, predeceased her. She was born in Charlton, daughter of Wladyslaw L. and Suzanna A. (Kulesza) Kalinowski. She attended Classical High School in Worcester, Mass., before beginning her religious life as a postulant in 1934. She entered the novitiate in Torresdale in 1935 and professed her first vows in 1937 and her final vows in 1943. She received a bachelor's degree from Marywood College, Scranton, in 1955 and a master's degree from Villanova University in 1967.

Sister Kalinowski spent 19 years in elementary education in Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut and 24 years in two Philadelphia high schools. In 1980, she retired from teaching and became assistant to the treasurer at Holy Family College, retiring in 2000.

A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, in St. Boniface Church, 817 Massachusetts Ave., Lunenburg, Mass. There are no calling hours.

John W. Kaskewicz, 79

WORCESTER - John W. Kaskewicz, 79, of 16 Vernon St., a World War II veteran, died Sunday, June 9, in University Commons after an illness.

He leaves three brothers, Edward and Joseph Kaskewicz, both of Worcester and Walter Kaskewicz of Sutton; a sister, Stasia Joseph of Worcester; many nieces and nephews. He was born in Worcester, son of William and Mary (Plona) Kaskewicz. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Kaskewicz worked many years as a maintenance technician for several area companies before retiring. He was a member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, and the Disabled American Veterans South Works Post.

Mr. Kaskewicz donated his body to science at UMass Medical School. A memorial Mass will be held at a time and date to be announced. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 1 Abbey Lane, Middleboro, MA 02346. Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., is directing arrangements.

Edward L. King, 65

LEOMINSTER - Edward L. King, 65, of 80 Howard St., a retired pressman, died Friday, June 7, at home after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 35 years, Elizabeth (Banovich) King; his father, John E. King of Clinton; a daughter, Cheryl A. Fazio of Gardner; a son, Edward A. King of Braintree; two brothers, Robert King of Annandale, N.J., and Thomas King of Clinton; three granddaughters. He was born in East Liverpool, Ohio, son of John E. and Thelma (Melvin) King, and lived 19 years in Leominster. He graduated from Midland High School in Midland, Pa., and served in the Army in Germany during the 1950s.

He was a machinist 19 years at Eusey Press, retiring last year. He previously worked 15 years at Crucible Steel in Midland.

He was a member of the Leominster Rod and Gun Club, and enjoyed fishing.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, in Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St. Burial will be in St. Cecilia's Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, in the funeral home.

Ruth A. Kinnecome, 85

MENDON - Ruth A. (Lyon) Kinnecome, 85, of Washington Street, died Tuesday, June 11, in the SunBridge for Milford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Her husband, Willard E. Kinnecome, died in 1992. She leaves a son, Edwin Kinnecome of Boston; three daughters, Gale Meade of Richmond, Va., Faith Michalik of Milford and Janet Padula of Woonsocket, R.I.; four grandchildren; and four great - grandchildren. A granddaughter predeceased her. She was born in Killingly, Conn., daughter of Glenn F. and Annie (Lyman) Lyon, and had lived in Mendon for 50 years.

Mrs. Kinnecome was a licensed practical nurse for 19 years at Milford - Whitinsville Regional Hospital, retiring in 1979. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 14, in the chapel of Buma Funeral Home, 101 North Main St., Uxbridge. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Uxbridge. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 13, in the funeral home, 101 North Main St., Uxbridge. Donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Greater Milford - Northbridge Area Inc., 1 Emerson St., PO Box 8, Mendon, MA 01756.

Matilda G. Kortes, 84

RUTLAND - Matilda G. (Zemaitis) Kortes, 84, of Rutland, died Monday, June 10, in Holden Nursing Home.

She leaves her husband of 63 years, Arthur Kortes; a son, Richard A. Kortes of Rutland; a daughter, Sandra J. Hannon of Mount Airy, Md.; a brother, Vitie Zemaitis of California; a sister, Jean Zemaitis of Holden; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A brother, John Zemaitis, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Michael and Mary (Palubeckas) Zemaitis, and graduated from Commerce High School.

Mrs. Kortes was a nurse's aide at Rutland Heights Hospital for 18 years. She enjoyed crocheting and gardening.

Funeral services and burial are private and will take place at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Donations may be made to a charity. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden, is directing arrangements.

Violet C. Labonte, 93
Thursday, June 13, 2002

SOUTHBRIDGE - Violet C. (Chagnon) Labonte, 93, formerly of 62 Highland St., died Wednesday, June 12, in Webster Manor.

Her husband, Arthur Labonte, died in 1976. She leaves a nephew, Charles Demers of Southbridge; two nieces, Violette Renaud of Sturbridge and Fleurette Wyllie of New Seabury; a grandnephew and grandniece; great - grandnieces and great - grandnephews. She was born in West Warwick, R.I., daughter of Joseph and Marie (St. Germain) Chagnon.

Mrs. Labonte, a beautician, owned and operated Violet's Beauty Shop for many years. She was a member of Notre Dame Church.

The funeral will be held Saturday, June 15, from Sansoucy Funeral Home, 40 Marcy St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Notre Dame Church, 446 Main St. Burial will be in New Notre Dame Cemetery. A calling hour will be 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15, in the funeral home.
