Edwin A. Laitinen, 76

HUBBARDSTON - Edwin A. Laitinen, 76, of 63 Gardner Road, a World War II veteran and a retired engineer, died Wednesday, June 12, at home of prostate cancer.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Barbara (Ikonen) Laitinen; a son, Peter Laitinen of Hubbardston; a daughter, Maija Sevigny of Hubbardston; a sister, Arlene Goldman of Silver Springs, Md.; three grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Gardner, son of Albin and Sadie (Syria) Laitinen, and lived 15 years in Fitchburg and 41 years in Hubbardston. He graduated from Gardner High School in 1943 and received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1950. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a private first class.

Mr. Laitinen was an engineer for General Electric Co., Hughes Aircraft Co. in Tucson, Ariz., and then Simplex Time Recorder Co. for 24 years before retiring. He was a member of Hubbardston Golden Age Club, Federated Church of Hubbardston, Mount Zion Masonic Lodge in Barre, Melha Temple Shrine in Springfield, Knights of Kaleva in Fitchburg and the prostate cancer support group at Heywood Hospital, Gardner; a life member and past president of Hubbardston Rod and Gun Club. He was an outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He also enjoyed traveling.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 17, in Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St., Gardner. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours are 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday, June 17, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Gardner Visiting Nursing Association and Hospice, 34 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440; or to Hubbardston EMS, c/o Hubbardston Fire Department, Main Street, Hubbardston, MA 01452.

Armand Leclair, 77

STERLING - Armand Leclair, 77, of 46 Lakeview Ave., a transit worker for 50 years, died May 29 in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after a short illness.

His wife, Eleanor A. (Miller) Leclair, died in 1982. He leaves a son, Lawrence P. Leclair of Florida; two daughters, Linda M. Morgan and Laurel A. Joyce, both of Sterling; two sisters, Ester Troy and Yvonne Shikor, both of Worcester; and four grandchildren. He was born in Worcester, son of Joseph and Eva (Clouthier) Leclair, and lived many years in Sterling.

Mr. Leclair worked 50 years for Worcester Street Railway, which became Worcester Bus Co. and is now the Worcester Regional Transit Authority.

The funeral service and burial will be private. There are no calling hours. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, Massachusetts Affiliate, 1 Bromfield St., Boston, MA 02108. Graham, Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlors, 838 Main St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.

CLINTON - Victoria M. (Guy) Marchion, 54, of 607 Main St., formerly of Princeton, died Thursday, June 6, in UMass Memorial Medical Center - Memorial Campus, Worcester, after an illness.

She leaves two daughters, Nancy L. Oliver of Barre and Pennie J. Oliver of Sterling; two brothers, Arthur and Chuck Guy, both of Lynn; four sisters, Iris Arsenault of Vermont, Pat Wagner of Connecticut, Kitty Clark of Princeton and Lorraine Gaylurdo of Danvers; four grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Two brothers, Charles and Michael Guy, and a sister, Linda Sutton, predeceased her. She was born in Lynn, daughter of Ormenande and Catherine (Conway) Guy, and was raised in Princeton. She moved to Clinton several years ago. She attended Wachusett Regional High School, Holden.

Mrs. Marchion was a circuit - board tester for Pro - To Technology for 15 years. She enjoyed playing pitch.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in Robert J. McNally Funeral Home, 304 Church St. Burial will be private in Reservoir Pines Cemetery. A calling hour is 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Lung Association of Central Massachusetts, 1 Abbey Lane, Middleboro, MA 02346.

Mabel L. Marsaw, 97

CHATHAM - Mabel L. (Ballou) Marsaw, 97, of Chatham, formerly of Worcester, a retired nurse, died Thursday, June 6, in Liberty Commons.

Her husband of 63 years, Percy F. Marsaw, died in 1994. She leaves four daughters, Patricia LaBranche of Eastham, Dorcas Layport of Rochester, Susan Saunders of Shrewsbury and Penelope Denechaud of Titusville, N.J.; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great - grandchildren. She was born in Uxbridge, daughter of Charles H. and Charlotte (Cornwell) Ballou. She graduated from Uxbridge High School and from Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Worcester.

Mrs. Marsaw was a registered nurse for the former Worcester County Sanitarium in Boylston. She was a member of United Congregational Church, Worcester, and its Women's Organization and Sewing Circle. She belonged to the Worcester Women's Club, the Wittenagamot Society and the Gay Nineties Club.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marsaw Fund, United Congregational Church, 6 Institute Road, Worcester, MA 01609.

Kathleen H. Martin, 78

LEOMINSTER - Kathleen H. "Kay" (O'Connor) Martin, 78, of Leominster and Bradenton, Fla., a retired comptroller, died Tuesday, June 11, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital after an illness.

Her husband, Philip J. Martin, died in 1992. She leaves a daughter, Lois A. Marini of Leominster; two sisters, Marilyn Sabroski of Needham and Barbara Ann Lawrence of Sagamore Beach; a brother, Dr. Richard O'Connor of Arkansas; two grandchildren; and three great - grandchildren. Two brothers, John D. and William O'Connor, and two sisters, Doris Louney and Ruth Conway, predeceased her. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Dr. John F. and Helen (Sweeney) O'Connor. She graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1943 and from Wellesley Hills Hospital School of Nursing, a division of Boston Children's Hospital.

Mrs. Martin was a comptroller more than 25 years at Foster Grant Co. before retiring. She was a member of St. Leo's Parish, Foster Grant 25 Year Club and Leominster Senior Citizens.

The funeral will be held Thursday, June 13, from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Leo's church, 108 Main St. Burial will be in St. Leo's Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, in the funeral home.

Michael T. Matraia, 86

NORTHBORO - Michael T. Matraia, 86, of Northboro, formerly of Shrewsbury and New York City, a retired supermarket worker, died Tuesday, June 4, in EPOCH Healthcare Center after a long illness.

His wife, Betty (Totaro) Matraia, died in 1989. He leaves two sons, John M. Matraia of Northboro and Michael L. Matraia of New York City; a brother, Joseph Matraia of Ridge, N.Y.; two grandchildren; and four great - grandchildren. A sister, Carmella Montagne, predeceased him. He was born in New York City, son of John and Mary (Centimore) Matraia, and lived there until moving to Shrewsbury in 1984. He moved to Northboro several years ago.

Mr. Matraia worked in the seafood department at Stop & Shop in Westboro, retiring in 1998. Previously, he was a baker in New York.

No funeral service is planned. Burial will be private in Howard Street Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Britton - Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury (www.brittonfuneralhomes.com), is directing arrangements.

John H. McArdle, 78

WORCESTER - John H. McArdle, 78, of 45 Burncoat Terrace, died Saturday, June 8, in UMass Memorial Medical Center - Memorial Campus after a brief illness.

He leaves his wife of 45 years, Mary E. (Carney) McArdle; a son, John M. McArdle of Worcester; a daughter, Claire E. Jones of Charlton; a sister, Nancy Crough of Foresthill, Calif.; four grandchildren. A sister, Grace Peterson, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of John W. and Agnes (Kimball) McArdle, and graduated from Commerce High School. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, and an Air Force veteran of World War II.

He served more than 30 years in the Air National Guard. He was primarily a master sergeant in the 212th Installation Squadron. For most of his career, he was a materials manager, retiring in 1985.

Mr. McArdle was a member of St. Bernard's Parish, the Massachusetts State Retirees Association, Vernon Hill American Legion Post 435 and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was a founder of the 313th Retirees Association.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, June 11, from Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Bernard's Church, 236 Lincoln St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 10, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to St. Bernard's Parish, 236 Lincoln St., Worcester, MA 01605.

Robert W. Mitchell, 65

LEOMINSTER - Robert W. Mitchell, 65, of 43 Daisy Drive, a retired systems analyst and U.S. Navy veteran, died Wednesday, June 5, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital.

He leaves his wife of 22 years, Dianne E. (Green) Mitchell; two daughters, Carol A. Quiet and Susan J. Yakusik, both of Leominster; a brother, Richard Mitchell of Winchendon; and four grandchildren. He was born in Winchendon, son of Clarence T. and Madeline (Williams) Mitchell, and lived many years in Leominster. He graduated from Winchendon High School and served in the Navy during the 1950s.

Mr. Mitchell was a systems analyst for more than 30 years at General Electric, retiring in 1994. He was a member of Highland Baptist Church, Fitchburg. He enjoyed handcrafting miniature villages.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in Highland Baptist Church, 19 Cedar St., Fitchburg. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Ashby. Calling hours are 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 7, in Aubuchon - Moorcroft Funeral Home, 132 Woodland St., Fitchburg. Donations may be made to Highland Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 19 Cedar St., Fitchburg, MA 01420.
