Ralph B. Osborn, 83

Hyannis - Ralph B. Osborn, 83, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community Pavilion in Hyannis after an illness.

He was the husband of Mildred W. (Parks) Osborn.

Born in Ludlow, Mr. Osborn was raised and educated in Worcester. He moved to Boylston later in life.

He was employed for 49 years at the family business E.W. Parks Co., a leather processing company in Worcester. He retired in 1981 and moved to Hyannis.

Mr. Osborn was a member of the United Methodist Church in Osterville and a past member of the Covenant United Methodist Church in Worcester, where he was president of the Men's Club, on the board of trustees and a member of its Bowling League. He was also a member of the Morning Star Masonic Lodge in Worcester, where he was lecturer of the lodge.

An avid bowler, horseshoe player and fisherman, Mr. Osborn held the High Triple for several years while bowling for the Covenant United Methodist Church in the Worcester YMCA League, and held the title of New England Horseshoe Champion at the age of 16.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Richard E. Osborn of Holden; a daughter, Judith A. Saulnier of Hyannis; three brothers, Howard Osborn of Charlton, David Osborn of Zebulon, N.C., and twin brother Raymond Osborn of Scarborough, Maine; five granddaughters; and eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside service and burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.

Mary E. Ryan

Hyannis - Mary "Maizie" E. (McCarthy) Ryan died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999 at Hospice House in Barnstable.

She was the wife of the late John J. Ryan.

Mrs. Ryan was born in Fall River and lived for many years in Boca Raton, Fla., before settling in Hyannis 20 years ago.

She was an avid sports fan and a dedicated bridge player.

She is survived by a brother, William McCarthy of Mississippi; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ryan was proud to donate her body to science.

James G. West, Jr., 85

Falmouth - James G. West Jr., 85, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999 at the JML Care Facility in Falmouth after a long illness.

He was the husband of the late Margaret Rose (Ahern) West.

Born in South Boston, Mr. West was educated in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School, where he was captain and quarterback of the football team and a member of the baseball team.

Mr. West worked for the Boston and Maine railroad, the Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates in Everett and the Randolph School Department.

After his retirement, he moved to the Cape and lived in Mashpee and Pocasset until his illness.

Surviving are a son, James G. West III of Marstons Mills, contributing writer for The Barnstabe Patriot; a sister, Louise Sylvester of Brockton; and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph H. Beecher, 94

Centerville - Joseph H. Beecher, 94, a longtime Hyannis lawyer, died Feb. 19, 1999 at the Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Centerville.

He was the husband of the late Claire (Ryan) Beecher.

Born in Roxbury, Mr. Beecher was a 1926 graduate of Boston College and graduated from Boston University School of Law in 1929.

From 1929 to 1949 he was in private practice in Boston with several firms. In 1949, he moved to the Cape and practiced law in Hyannis as an active trial lawyer until the late 1970s and maintained an office practice until 1990.

Mr. Beecher served as president of the Barnstable Bar Association in 1964 and 1965 and was a delegate to the Massachusetts Bar Association for a number of years. He also served as chairman of the Barnstable Board of Appeals for five years.

He is survived by a son, Superior Court Judge J. Michael Beecher of Newport Beach, Calif.; a grandson; and five nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

John W. Burton, 89

Hyannisport - John W. Burton, 89, a former teacher, who was also involved in civil rights issues, died Feb. 21, 1999 at his home.

A native of Washington , D.C., he was a former member of the Lincoln Temple Congregational Church.

In his youth, Mr. Burton received his formal education in the D.C. school system.

He earned a liberal arts degree from Howard University in 1937 and a master's degree from New York University. Subsequent to his graduate work, he worked as a public school teacher for several years in the D.C. school district. While employed there, he collaborated with Dr. Allen Kroehler of Lancaster, Pa. Together, they developed a course of study which focused on the History and Contributions of African Americans in the United States; this come become part of the curriculum of the District of Columbia Schools.

In the late 1960s, he moved to the Lancaster, Pa., area to work for the Urban League. He was known for being a civic-minded gentleman and worked diligently on civil rights issues and other political concerns of the day. His further work for the Urban League in New Jersey during the 1970s only served to reinforce his commitment to foster social justice and educate others. During this same period, he was listed in Who's Who in America and received a number of recognitions and awards.

Mr. Burton enjoyed art, theater, music and literature. His own poetry appeared in print in several anthologies and newspapers. Through his many and varied travels, he developed circles of friends In all of the aforementioned disciplines as well as through his ministerial and pastoral interests.

In the late 1970s, he retired to Hyannisport. He became a positive force in his community by contributing his expertise to a number of boards. His involvement in the NAACP, Barnstable school councils, Cape Cod Council of Doers Inc., Town Scholarship Committee and Wisdom Institute of Lifelong Learning served as opportunities for him to continue to educate others regarding civil rights issues and to further educate himself.

Catherine M. Gallagher, 79

West Hyannisport - Catherine M. (Kelly) Gallagher, 79, died Thursday at her home.

She was the wife of Daniel J. Gallagher, who died Dec. 25, 1998.

Born in Boston, Mrs. Gallagher was a graduate of Holy Trinity High School, Boston. She lived in Roslindale for 20 years and in West Hyannisport for the past 30 years.

She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Women's Guild, Ladies Auxiliary of Dennis F. Thomas Post Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 2578 in Hyannis, Wequaquet Lake Yacht Club and the Hyannis Yacht Club.

Surviving are a daughter, Maureen C. Costello of Roslindale; a son, Daniel G. Gallagher of Massatutten, Va.; two granddaughters, Christine M. Costello and Sheila M. Murphy, who summered with their grandparents every year; and a great-grandson, Sean Daniel Murphy.

Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Langdon S. Goddard, 84

Hyannis - Langdon S. Goddard, 84, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999 at The Greenery after a brief illness

He was the husband of Marjorie (Clarke) Goddard, who died in 1985.

Born in Plymouth, Mr. Goddard grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a 1936 graduate of Harvard University and served as assistant to the president of Todd Shipyards in New York City.

He retired to the Cape in 1971, where he enjoyed sailing and fishing.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas A. Goddard of Stuart, Fla., and Allen C. Goddard of Hyannis; a daughter, Elizabeth G. Dater of Portsmouth, N.H.; and a granddaughter.

Memorial donations may be made to the Barnstable Land Trust, One Winter Street, Hyannis, Mass. 02601.

Marjorie J. Hamblin, 94

Hyannis - Marjorie J. Hamblin, 94, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999 at the Hospice House in Barnstable after a long illness.

Miss Hamblin was born in Boston and raised in Revere, graduating from Revere High School and later from the Lynn Hospital School of Nursing.

In 1927 she was employed by Cape Cod Hospital and from 1950 to 1969 was a supervising nurse there. She was a private duty nurse at the hospital from 1969 to 1974, when she retired.

Miss Hamblin is survived by her close friend, Bernice Oliver of Hyannis, and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy M. Igo, 86

Hyannisport - Dorothy M. (Siever) Igo, 86, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Facility­Manor in Hyannis after a long illness.

She was the wife of George L. Igo, who died in 1969.

Born, raised and educated in Plymouth, Mrs. Igo was married in 1935. She moved with her husband to Hyannis in 1949 and was a resident of Hyannisport for the past 45 years.

A homemaker, she loved to spend time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed reading and crocheting.

Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Kramer of St. Louis, Mo., and Patricia Bestford of Hyannisport; a son, George L. Igo Jr. of Marietta, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Plymouth.

Myles L. Lamson, 76

Centerville - Myles L. Lamson, 76, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Alice E. (Stennes) Lamson.

Born in Cambridge, Mr. Lamson was raised and educated in Watertown. He entered the Navy in 1942 and spent the remainder of the war in Naval intelligence, stationed in Guam. He was a radio operator and cryptographer, one of the renowned "code breakers."

After the war, he married and earned a degree from the Bentley School of Accounting. He lived in Newton Centre and in Connecticut before settling in Reading for 26 years.

Mr. Lamson worked in the finance area of the Corenco Corporation of Tewksbury for 33 years and was assistant treasurer at the time of his 1980 retirement. Thereafter, he was to offer his services as controller for both the Albert E. Locke Co. of Boston and the Randix Co. of Natick.

In 1984, he and his wife retired to Centerville after having vacationed in the area for many years.

A 32nd Degree Mason, Mr. Lamson was a member of the Mariners Lodge AF & AM in Cotuit, a 50-year veteran medal holder. He had been a member of the Aleppo Temple in Wilmington and was treasurer of the Cape Cod Shrine Club.

He was also an active member of the Barnstable YMCA and the Cape Cod Salties' Sport Fishing Club.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Myles L. Lamson III of Salt Lake City, Utah; and a daughter, Judith A. Lamson of Centerville.

Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.
