Robert H. Lavigueur, 67

Centerville - Robert H. Lavigueur, 67, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Janet C. (Frederick) Lavigueur.

Born and educated in Attleboro, he was a resident of the Cape for more than 30 years.

Mr. Lavigueur was the owner and operator of Bartley Excavating & Movers Inc. Before that, he worked for Robert Hayden Building Movers for many years.

Surviving besides his wife are a sister, Regina J. Beauregard of Attleboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.

Rosa S. Buzzell, 93

Centerville - Rosa (Smith) Buzzell, 93, of Centerville, who once owned restaurants in Maine, died Friday, March 5, 1999 after an illness at the Cape Regency Nursing Home in Centerville.

She was born in Steuben, Maine, where she attended local schools. After completing her education she married Clarence Buzzell.

Together they owned and ran several restaurants including Buzzell's in Steuben and another restaurant for many years in Machias, Maine. In the early 1960s, they retired and moved to Northboro.

In Northboro, Mrs. Buzzell was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Rice Memorial Baptist Church. She moved to Centerville earlier this year.

She is survived by two daughters, Anne MacInnis of Osterville and Marita Roscover of Colorado Springs, Co.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations in her name may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA O1701.

Antonio L. Furtado, 64

Hyannis - Antonio L. Furtado, 64, a former Packaging Industries employee, died March 3, 1999 at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Evlalia (Raposo) Furtado.

Born, raised and educated in the Azores, Mr. Furtado served in the Portugal Armed Forces. He came to the United States in 1969 and settled in the Fall River area, where he worked in construction.

In 1978, he moved to Hyannis and was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church. He worked for Packaging Industries in Hyannis until his retirement in 1996.

Mr. Furtado took great pride in his home and landscaping, and worked for hours in his vegetable and flower gardens. He also enjoyed fishing and long walks.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Mary Almas of Centerville and Rosa Sousa of Hyannis; a sister, Idalina Pacheco of Fall River; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Centerville.

Charles McMakin, 73

Hyannis - Charles McMakin, 73, a retired business owner, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999 at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community-Manor in Hyannis.

Born in Barnstable, Mr. McMakin was a World War II Navy veteran. He worked in poleline construction, owning his own business until retiring in 1984. He was a longtime resident of Hyannis.

Mr. McMakin enjoyed traveling and visited the West Coast several times in his later years.

Surviving are two daughters, Cheryl A. Dowling of Centervilie and Barbara A. Jones of Cotuit; two sons, James C. McMakin of North Eastham and Timothy M. McMakin of North Waterboro, Maine; his mother, Anna Steele of North Eastham; two sisters, Helen Knowles of North Eastham and Eugenia Brown of Cambridge; a stepbrother, Brad Steele of California; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the father of the late Teresa M. McMakin.

Edwin J. Armstrong, 90

Hyannis - Edwin J. Armstrong, 90, died Thursday, March 11, 1999 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care- Pavilion in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Helen (Joyce) Armstrong.

Born in Hyde Park, Mr. Armstrong was raised and educated in Watertown, where he graduated from Watertown High School.

He worked for the MBTA for 47 years, retiring as purchasing manager in 1973.

He settled in Hyannis after his retirement.

A World War II veteran, he served overseas in the European Theater of Operations.

Mr. Armstrong was a member of the Federated Church of Hyannis, where he served as a deacon and member of the finance committee.

He was also a 50-year member of the Victory Lodge AF&AM of Watertown, Valley of Boston and Aleppo Shrinersof Wilmington.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, George Armstrong of Millis; a daughter, Barbara Baker of Trumbull, Conn.; a grandson; three granddaughters; three nieces; and three nephews.

Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

George Bergtholdt, 88

West Hyannisport - George Bergtholdt, 88, retired Army officer and executive, died Friday, March 12, 1999 at the Cape Regency Nursing Home.

He was born and educated in Sioux City, Iowa.

He graduated from Central High School in Sioux City, and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa.

He served in the Army during World War II, first in the Pacific theater and later at a division ordnance officer with the 81st "Wildcat" Infantry Division.

He received a Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one battle star, American Theater Ribbon, Meritorious Service Award and World War II Victory Medal. He served for eight years as an instructor at the Tulsa Army Reserve School and at Fort Sill.

He retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel.

After leaving the military, he worked for Stearns and Roger Manufacturing Co. in Denver and later for the Midland-Ross Corporation where he began as a sales engineer, was promoted to vice president and director of corporate planning.

He moved to Hyannisport upon retirement in 1975. He was a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Instrument Society of America and the Reserve Officers Association.

He was an avid reader with a particular interest in history and biographies.

Survivors Include his wife Althea "Theda" Bergtholdt; a son, Randall Bergtholdt of Minnesota; a brother, Charles Bergtholdt of Houston, Texas ; one grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the National Cemetery at Bourne.

Memorial donations may be made to libraries in Hyannis, Centerville and Osterville, to the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Rescue at 1875 Route 28, Centerville, MA 02632 or to the charity of one's choice.

Mary E. (Donohue) Bernstein, 75

Jacksonville, Fla. - Mary E. (Donohue) Bernstein of Jacksonville, Florida, a decorated World War II U.S. Navy veteran and an active member of WAVE's National Survivors, died in Jacksonville at the age of 75.

A native of Lowell, she leaves survivors on Cape Cod, including a sister, Frances E. Smith of Hyannis, a neice, Paula Smith of Hyannis, and a nephew, Larry Smith of Harwich.

Internment was in Arlington National Cemetery.

Eleanor G. Deveney, 89

Cummaquid - Eleanor G. (Lordan) Deveney, 89, a longtime Cummaquid resident, died Saturday, March 13, 1999 at her home.

Born in Somerville, Mrs. Deveney was a graduate of St. Mary's High School in Cambridge and attended Boston College.

She was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis, where she was a member and past president of the St. Francis Xavier Women's Guild. Mrs. Deveney was also a member and historian of the Boston College Club of Cape Cod.

Mrs. Deveney is survived by two daughters, Genevieve "Gene" White of Dorchester and Sandwich and Charlotte M. Collins of Milton and Cummaquid; three sons, Gerard L. Deveney of Cohasset, Edward I. Deveney of Cummaquid and Paul J. Deveney of New York City and Washington , D.C.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Cummaquid Cemetery.

Lisa Ann Drew, 44

Cummaquid - Lisa Ann (Lovell) Drew, 44, a science teacher in the Barnstable public schools, died Friday, Mach 12, 1999 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a long illness.

She was the wife of Donald M. Drew, Jr. and mother of Danielle Drew of Cummaquid.

Born in Brockton, Mrs. Drew was a graduate of Abington High School, Cape Cod Community College and Bridgewater State College.

She worked for 10 years for P.B.A. Airlines before becoming a science teacher. She taught at Barnstable's Grade 5 School and later at the Barnstable Middle School in Hyannis.

Besides her husband and daughter, Mrs. Drew is survived by four sisters, Melody Schillings, Kathy St. Charles, Tracy Brown and Amy Brown, all of Abington; and many nieces and nephews. She was the daughter-in-law of Donald and Helen Drew Sr. of Barnstable; and sister-in-law of James and Lynne Drew of Barnstable.

Burial was private.

Donations in her name may be made to the Barnstable Scholarship Fund, c/o Town Manager's office, 367 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Rowena Emrich, 81

Osterville - Rowena Stevens Emrich, 81, a homemaker, died Thursday, March 13, 1999 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care-Manor in Hyannis after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Herman G. Emrich, who died in 1991. They were married for 55 years.

Born in Hyannis, she was educated in Barnstable schools. She lived in Osterville since 1936.

A homemaker, she enjoyed gardening and feeding the birds.

She is survived by a son, Louis Emrich of Osterville; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, 434 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660.
