Verna T. Gallant, 67

Hyannis - Verna T. (Clavette) Gallant, 67, a longtime Cape Cod resident, died at her home Sunday, March 14, 1999 after a short illness.

She was the wife of the late Frederick C. Gallant

Mrs. Gallant was born in North Attleboro but shortly after moved to the New York City area. She moved to the Cape in 1947 and married Mr. Gallant in 1954.

She was a member of the V.F.W. Women's Auxiliary of Hyannis and the Brewster "Bitty Club."

Mrs. Gallant enjoyed bingo and was a regular player at the D.A.V. in Hyannis. She loved her pets, gardening, camping with her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, Frederick C. Gallant Jr. of Potsdam, N.Y., and Jody R. Gallant of Hyannis; a daughter, Darline Manwaring, of Yarmouthhport, five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Marie Hughes, 91

Hyannis - Marie Johnston Hughes, 91, formerly of Newton Center and Needham, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999 at Cape Cod Hospital.

She was the wife of the late Robert Hughes.

Mrs. Hughes was born, raised and educated in Dorchester. She graduated from St. Peter's High School in Dorchester and moved to Medford.

Before her marriage, she worked as an executive secretary for Boston Edison for 13 years. She was married in Newton and became part owner of the Chestnut Hill Garage.

After summering on the Cape for more than 30 years, Mr. and Mrs. Hughes retired here in 1971.

While in Newton, Mrs. Hughes was active in the Sacred Heart Church and the Newton Center Women's Club. In Centerville, she was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church.

Mrs. Hughes was an avid swimmer and enjoyed the Cape Cod beaches. She was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed the sounds of big bands and Broadway musicals.

She leaves a son, Thomas Hughes of Riverside, Conn; a daughter, Anne Hughes of Hyannis; a sister, Loretta Smith of Naples, Fla. and Harwich; one grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Charlotte M. Lentell, 75

Cotuit - Charlotte M. (McCreight) Lentell, 75, died Monday, March 9, 1999 at Falmouth Hospital.

She was the wife of the late William E. Lentell.

Born in Jackson, Mich., Mrs. Lentell was raised throughout Michigan. She was a graduate of Jackson High School and studied engineering at Tri-State College in Angola, Ind., where she met her husband.

Mrs. Lentell returned to Jackson, where she spent 23 years raising her children. She moved to Massachusetts in 1970 and to Cotuit in 1973.

An avid gardener, she was also an excellent cook and seamstress. She enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Cotuit Highground Golf Club.

Surviving are a son, W. Patrick Lentell of Cotuit; three daughters, Margaret M. Lentell of Portland, Ore., Priscilla A. "Annie" Eddy of Alexandria, Va., and Betty J. Lentell of West Barnstable; a brother, William S. McCreight of Jackson, Mich.; four grandsons; and a great-grandson.

Memorial donations may be made to the Falmouth Hospital Nurses Auxiliary; or to the Jackson High School Scholarship Fund, in memory of Charlotte Lentell, Attention: Carol Engel, 544 Wildwood Ave., Jackson, MI 49201.

Jessie Leonard, 99

Osterville - Jessie (Boult) Leonard, 99, died Monday, March 8, 1999 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Facility in Hyannis.

She was the wife of Burleigh D. Leonard, who died in 1957.

A lifelong resident of Osterville, Mrs. Leonard was a member of the Osterville Community Methodist Church, Friends of Osterville Free Library and various women's groups in the village. She was also a charter member of the Osterville Historical Society.

Holder of the Blount Cane, which was left by William Blount in 1871 to be presented to the oldest inhabitant of his native village, Mrs. Leonard has been the third member of her family to possess the cane.

The Blount Cane passed first to Mrs. Leonard's great-grandfather, Oliver Hinckley, who died in 1888 at the age of 96. In due time, the cane was presented to Mrs. Leonard's aunt, Sarah Hallett Boult, who died in 1960 at the age of 97. The cane will pass next to Osterville's oldest native-born resident as determined by the board of directors of the Osterville Historical Society.

Surviving are a daughter, Andrea Leonard of Osterville; three sons, Willis H. Leonard of Osterville, Philip Leonard of New Ulm, Minn., and Roger C. Leonard of Marstons Mills; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-step-grandchildren; and a nephew.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Paul E. Lucier, 67

Hyannis - Paul E. Lucier, 67, a retired aircraft mechanic and Vietnam War veteran, died Wednesday at his winter home in Englewood, Fla.

He was the husband of Elizabeth A. Lucier.

Born in Leominster, Mr. Lucier joined the Air Force in 1951 and served in Vietnam, providing air rescue. After his tour of duty, he joined the Massachusetts Air National Guard as an aircraft mechanic. He retired in 1987.

Mr. Lucier was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2578 in Hyannis and the Air Force Association.

He coached for the Town Hockey Association in Hyannis for 20 years and participated in the adult hockey leagues in Hyannis and Dennis. He was also a member of the Venice "Mighty Docs" hockey team.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Jey Grenier of Westerly, R.I. and Michelle Cook of Flower Mound, Texas ; a son, Mark Leonard of West Yarmouth; three sisters, Patricia Voedisch and Jeanne Phelps, both of Leominster, and Nancy Lanza of Coos Bay, Ore.; two brothers, Albert Lucier Jr. of Lunenburg and W. Francis Lucier of Daytona, Fla.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

James A. Maclachlan, 84

West Hyannisport - James A. Maclachlan, 84, formerly of Quincy, died Wednesday, March 10 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis.

He was the husband of Dorothy (Treco) Maclachlan.

Born in Boston, he lived in Quincy until 1974 and attended high school there. He was active in high school sports.

In 1974 he moved to West Hyannisport where he had summered for many years.

A mechanical engineer, Mr. Maclachlan had worked for North American Rockwell until retiring in 1974.

He played adult league ice hockey for many years and enjoyed woodworking and salt-water fishing.

An avid golfer, he was a member of the Cummaquid Golf Club and the Rural Masonic Lodge AF & AM of Quincy.

Besides his wife of 58 years, Mr. Maclachlan is survived by one son, James E. Maclachlan of Hyannis; one daughter, Janet Police of Centerville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.

Margaret 'Midge' Davis Schuette, 67

Barnstable - Margaret "Midge" Davis Schuette, 67, a former business owner, died Feb. 28 during a trip to Arizona.

She was the wife of Robert W. Schuette, who died in 1998.

Born in Walmer, Kent, England, she was one of the many children evacuated from London during World War II who spent the war years living in the countryside with families who volunteered to provide shelter from the bombing.

Before moving to the United States in 1960, she worked at Kingston Technical College in Surrey; the Air Ministry, Whitehall, London; and the undersecretary of state's office.

Mrs. Schuette then worked for the Town Crier, a weekly newspaper for Wayland, Weston and Sudbury, where she was circulation, production and advertising manager before becoming associate publisher. She was known for her creativity and dedication to quality.

After leaving the Town Crier, she formed her own business, Ivy Unlimited, a marketing and production company. She was also a consultant for the Journal Transcript Newspapers of Revere and did marketing work for Impress Design/Typography of Wayland.

She also published annual community telephone books for several communities, including Townsend, Lunenburg, Winchendon and Westminster.

Mrs. Schuette had a flair for design and interests that ranged from fashion, movies and art to reading, walking and nature. She was also a gardener, gourmet cook, quilter and world traveler.

She started two movie discussion groups, inviting people she met at aerobics, movies and writing classes. After studying memoir writing at Radcliffe Institute, she joined writing groups, drawing on wartime memories for her stories.

Surviving are a daughter, Deborah O'Connor of Marblehead; a son, Ian Davis of Barnstable; her first husband, Paul Davis of Lincoln; and three grandchildren.

Herbert Downing Stringer, 90

Hyannis - Herbert Downing Stringer, 90, a retired Cape Cod home builder, died Saturday, March 13, 1999 at Cape Regency Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Centerville after a long illness.

He was the husband of the late Eleonora (Lagergren) Stringer.

Mr. Stringer was born and reared in Rockland. After graduating from Rockland High School, Mr. Stringer went on to Wentworth Institute and earned a degree in architectural construction. After college, Mr. Stringer began his career as a home builder and built many fine homes in Osterville and Wianno.

During World War II, he served in the Navy in the amphibious forces in the Pacific theater and also in the Merchant Marine, making two trips to the European theater aboard the SS Cape Cod.

Mr. Stringer served as the Barnstable building inspector for 20 years, retiring in 1974.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hyannis and a 50-year member of Mariners Lodge AF & AM in Cotuit.

Mr. Stringer is survived by two sons, Peter Stringer and Paul Stringer, both of Osterville; two daughters, Jean Stephens of Wilmington, N.C., and Sally McDonald of Reading, two sisters, Alice Barrett of North Easton, and Betty Reardon of Marshfield; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Burial was at Oak Neck Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Hyannis or the Hyannis Firefighter Relief Association.

Joseph L. Cairns Sr., 88

Centerville - Joseph L. Cairns Sr., 88, of Centerville and Citrus Springs, Fla., died March 16, 1999 at Seven Rivers Hospital in Crystal River, Fla.

Born in New Bedford, he moved to the Cape in 1930. He was the husband of the late Clara (Coleman) Cairns.

Mr. Cairns was a World War II Army veteran and worked as a postal worker at the Hyannis Post Office. He was a communicant and very active with Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville. He was also a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by a son, Joseph L. Cairns Jr. of Centerville, three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a good friend, Lois MacLeod, of Citus Springs, Fla.; and three nieces and three nephews.
