Florence T. Bender, 88

Osterville ­ Florence Therese Bender, 88, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late Edward Bender.

She was educated in the Brockton school system, graduating from Brockton High School. She also graduated from Bryant and Stratton Business College in Boston.

Mrs. Bender worked as a secretary at General Accident Insurance Co. in Boston for several years. She also worked in retail sales in Boston for R.H. Sterns and E.T. Slattery; in New York for Wanamakers; and in Osterville at The Irish Shop. She retired in 1986.

Mrs. Bender moved to Osterville from Milton in 1963. She attended services at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville.

She is survived by two sons, Jerome Bender of Weatherby Lake, Mo., and Peter Bender of Hopkington, N.H.; a daughter, Janet Schilling of Osterville; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hyannis Rescue Squad, 96 High School Road Extension, Hyannis, MA 02601; or to St. Jude's Children's Cancer Research, 505 N. Parkway, Memphis, TN 38105.

Warren Carstensen, 76

Osterville ­ Warren Carstensen, former owner of a Cambridge fuel company and longtime Osterville resident who enjoyed golf and sailing, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at Cape Cod Hospital.

He was the husband of Evelyn G. (Gardner) Carstensen.

Mr. Carstensen was born and educated in Cambridge, and graduated from Belmont Hill School in Belmont. He was a graduate of Harvard University, class of 1945, and served with the Naval Air Corps during World War II.

After the war, he returned to Cambridge, where he operated a fuel oil business. He also summered for many years in Osterville. He retired in 1980 and moved from his Lincoln home to Osterville permanently in the 1980s.

Mr. Carstensen enjoyed sailing, golf and his dogs.

A former member of the Concord Country Club, Mr. Carstensen was a former member of the board of the Wianno Club. He was also a member of the U.S. Seniors Golf Association, and was on the board of the Massachusetts Golf Association.

Besides his wife, Mr. Carstensen is survived by a son, Warren Carstensen Jr. of Osterville, a daughter, Evelyn C. Colburn of Centerville; two brothers; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held in St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Osterville.

Manuel F. 'Manny' Duarte, 77

Cotuit ­ Manuel F. "Manny'" Duarte, 77, a lifelong resident of Cotuit, died unexpectedly Friday, Nov. 12, 1999.

He was the husband of Frances M. (Doran) Duarte.

Born and raised in Cotuit, he was a marine electrician. He worked for Chester A. Crosby and then for Auto Marine in Osterville, retiring in 1984.

He was an avid golfer and gardener.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a sister, Caroline Condinho of Winter Springs, Fla.; a brother, John N. Duarte III of Marstons Mills; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the father of the late Judith A. Maher and Joel F. Duarte.

Burial was private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, Mass. 02675.

Robert W. French, 80

West Falmouth ­ Robert W. French, 80, former swing band member, died at his home Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, after a long illness.

He was the husband of Mary E. (Maginnis) French for 59 years.

Mr. French was born and raised in Somerville. In 1937 he organized the Bob French Big Swing Band which catered to college and social functions.

He established a summer home on Scraggy Neck in Cataumet in 1950.

He was president of the Robert W. French Co. and the Lite Safety and Security Products Co. He lived in Wellesley Hills from 1957 to 1979. He moved to West Falmouth when he retired.

In 1982, Mr. French became a trustee of Salt Pond Bird Sanctuary. In 1982 he organized Pumpkin Day at Bourne Farm in West Falmouth.

Since 1984 he spent winters on Marco Island, Florida.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Jeffrey French of Rockport; a daughter, Jennifer Hansen of Centerville; and five grandchildren.

A celebration of his life was held at the Mary French Dance Studio, Cataumet.

Elvira Gomes, 78

Falmouth ­ Elvira (Barboza) Gomes, 78, a lifelong resident of East Falmouth, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at her home.

She was he wife of the late Joseph F. Gomes.

Mrs. Gomes attended Falmouth schools. She devoted her life to her family.

She was a lifetime parishioner of St. Anthony Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Lucille Gomes of Dorchester; a son, Glenn Gomes of Hyannis; four sisters, Dominga "Lizzy" Gilmore of Teaticket, Dorothy Gomes of Pittsburg, Penn.; Lillian Gonsales of Sacramento, Calif.and Anna Richerson of Falmouth; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also the mother of Jose B. Gomes and Anita L. Gomes.

The funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Anthony Church, East Falmouth. Burial followed at the St. Anthony Cemetery.

Mary R. Goodwillie, 90

Mary Louise (Lou) Rhodes Goodwillie, 90, of Westport Island, Maine died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at the Frost-Inman House in Damariscotta.

Born June 14, 1909 in Portland, Ore.she was the daughter of Ivan B. and Martha S. Rhodes. She graduated from Skidmore College in 1932 and began her career in merchandising at Macy's in New York, where she rose to cosmetics buyer. During the war she was named the first woman vice president of Bamburgers Department Store in Newark, and she won the Navy E (for excellence) award for keeping the store open 24 hours a day when Navy ships were in port. Many years later, she served as executive director of New York's oldest and largest thrift shop, which supports research on rheumatic fever at Irvington House.

In 1937 she married John Morley Goodwillie and for many years was a committed volunteer, avid gardener and doting parent in Yorktown Heights, New York. Following her divorce in 1960, she earned a master's degree from the School of Education at Stanford University, traveled around the world by freighter and served as associate dean of admissions and counseling at Columbia University's School of General Studies.

In 1976 she retired to Cape Cod, where she lived among a host of devoted friends and volunteered at the local Hospice Thrift Shop, until she moved to Westport in 1996 to be with her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Bruce Stedman, who are her only survivors.

Her life will be celebrated in a garden memorial service on Westport Island next spring. Those wishing to honor her memory may send a contribution to the local Hospice, plant a perennial or adopt an animal that needs a home.

Katherine L. Hallett, 81

Hyannis ­ Katherine Louise Hallett, 81, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Unit in Hyannis.

She was the wife of the late Malcom Nelson Hallett.

Born, raised and educated in Hyannis, she graduated from Barnstable High School and the Hyannis Secretarial School.

Early in her life she worked as a legal secretary and in her family's business. During this time she became a staunch advocate for the elderly and disadvantaged.

She was a Vista volunteer, a member of the Community Action Committee, Community Service Area Advisory Board, and a senior paralegal aide in legal research and services for Elderly Inc. She worked with the late Dr. James Peace at Elder Services and sat on many local and area committees including the Cape Cod Hospital, Barnstable Housing Authority and the board of directors of the Hyannis Mets.

She was the first Silver Haired Legislator for the 2nd Barnstable District and wrote the Pet Bill for the Elderly.

She enjoyed playing bingo, and was an avid fan of the Red Sox, the Babe Ruth League and the Hyannis Mets.

Mrs. Hallett is survived by a son, John P. MacPhee of Yarmouth; a grandchild; great-grandchildren; and several cousins.

Burial was private.

William J. Maher, 85

Centerville ­ William J. Maher, 85, a retired builder, realtor and bank founder, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community-Manor in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Miriam "Mimi" (Sivula) Maher of Marstons Mills for 60 years.

Mr. Maher was born in Worcester. He was raised and educated there.

He was a graduate of Classical High School in 1930 and Clarkson University in 1934.

Mr. Maher lived in Worcester as a builder and realtor for some time before moving to New York in the 1970s where he worked in commercial property acquisition and sales throughout the United States.

He was a member of the Greater Worcester Board of Realtors and was founder of the Worcester Home Cooperative Bank.

Mr. Maher later moved to Sea Ranch Lakes, Fla. He was a summer resident of Centerville for 50 years and recently moved to Marstons Mills.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, William Maher of Westport, Conn., and Richard Maher of New Canaan, Conn.; three brothers, Thomas and Robert Maher, both of Worcester, and Edward Maher of Shrewsbury; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial was private.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
