Doris L. Gorman, 95

Hyannis ­ Doris L. Gorman, 95, a former waitress in Boston, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Manor in Hyannis.

She was the wife of the late Raymond E. Gorman. They were married for 75 years.

Born in Worcester, Mrs. Gorman was a former waitress in Schaff's in Boston, where she met her husband.

Mrs. Gorman moved to the Cape in 1957. She and her husband wintered in Lake Worth and Naples, Fla., for more than 20 years.

A member of the Federated Church of Hyannis for more than 35 years, she was an active member of Eliot Church in Newton and active in their Ladies Guild.

She was also an avid gardener.

Surviving are two daughters, Duane E. Schluter of Freedom, N.H., and Jean L. Lowther of Centerville; a brother, Charles Schrayer of Worcester; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at the Federated Church, Hyannis. Burial was private

Dorothy V. Hawkes, 96

Cotuit ­ Dorothy V. (Blake) Hawkes, 96, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at the JML Care Center in Falmouth.

Born in Halloweli, Maine, she was raised in Watertown. She has been a resident of Cotuit for the last 20 years.

She was a member of the Cotuit Women's Fellowship and the Ashburnham Women's Club.

She enjoyed gardening, golfing, bowling and handicrafts.

She is survived by a son, Alfred L. Hawkes of North Scituate, R.I. ;a daughter, Nancy J. Grant of Cotuit; seven grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren.

Barbara T. McDonough, 82

Marstons Mills ­ Barbara T. McDonough, 82, a licensed practical nurse, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

Born in Boston, she was raised in Roslindale and was a resident of Marstons Mills for the last 25 years. She was a LPN in private facilities.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Church and the Women's Guild and also on the board of directors of the Champ Youth House in Hyannis.

Surviving are a brother, Lawrence McDonough of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Osterville. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Cape Cod, 434 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660; or to the Champ Youth House, 82 School St., Hyannis, Mass. 02601.

Helen S. Philos, 85

South Yarmouth ­ Helen S. Philos, 85, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at the home of her daughter in West Barnstable.

Born in Superior, Neb., she llved in the Washington area before moving toThirwood Place in SouthYarmouth 10 years ago.

She earned her bachelor's degree from Hastings College in Hastings, Neb., studied at the International house in Geneva, Switzerland, and earned her graduate degree in economics from the University of Chicago.

Ms. Philos was an international law librarian for the American Society of International Law in Washington for more than 25 years before her retirement in 1985.

Using her skills as a professional

librarian, Ms. Philos took on the task of organizing the resident library at Thirwood Place when she moved. there in 1990.

She was a member of the Barnstable Unitarian Church and supported several organizations, including the World Federalist Society, the Nature Conservancy and the Union of Con: cerned Scientists.

She loved music and enjoyed playing the piano.

She is survived by three daughters, Diane Philos-Jensen of West Barnstable, Daphne Philos of Alexandria,Va., and Valerie Morris of Accokeek, Md.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a niece; and a nephew.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Verna M. Bear, 71

South Yarmouth ­ Verna M. (Morgan) Bear, 71, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Derge D. Bear, who died in 1985.

Born, raised and educated in South Yarmouth, she was a 1946 graduate of the former Yarmouth High School. She married in 1948 and settled in South Yarmouth to raise her family.

She enjoyed family functions, jigsaw puzzles, reading and knitting.

Surviving are three sons, Eric L. Bear of Wilton, Maine, Michael A. Bear of Centerville and Mark W. Bear of Jay, Maine; three daughters, Kathleen M. Scott of Glastonbury, Conn., Julie A. Esposito of Malden and Susan E. Enright of Marstons Mills; a brother, Richard Morgan of Yarmouthport; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

All services were private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Yarmouth Rescue Squad, c/o Yarmouth Firefighters Relief Association Inc. Fund, 96 Main St., South Yarmouth, Mass. 02664.

Mary M. 'Peggy' Benson, 75

Marlborough ­ Mary M. 'Peggy' (Gately) Benson, 75, who leaves family on the Cape, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at her home after a short illness.

Born in Marlborough, she lived there all her life, graduating from Marlborough High School in 1942 and Burdett College in Boston in 1944.

She is survived by a daughter, Laurie J. Benson of Marlborough; five sons, Gary Benson of Centerville, Drew H. Benson of Grafton, Kevin C. Benson, J. Lee Benson, and Roy G. Benson, all of Marlborough; a brother, Edward Gately of Marlborough;12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Central Massachusetts 120 Thomas St., Worcester, Mass. 01608.

Samuel Brocato Sr., 89

Hyannis ­ Samuel Brocato Sr., 89, formerly of Beaumont, Texas , died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community-Manor in Hyannis.

Born in Morraville, La., Mr. Brocato was raised and educated in Beaumont. He began working in law enforcement with the Texas Rangers in the 1930s and later as constable with the sheriff's department in Beaumont.

Mr. Brocato owned and operated Sam's BBQ restaurant in Beaumont for 50 years before retiring in the early 1990s. He also worked for Krogers Food Store as a butcher and meat department manager for 50 years.

Active in civic and community fund-raisers, Mr. Brocato donated his time and restaurant to many organizations to help raise money for charity. He was a lifelong member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Beaumont.

Surviving are a son, Sam Brocato of Marstons Mills; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Centerville, and burial followed.

Jean Z. Dion, 72

Marstons Mills ­ Jean Z. Dion, 72, a resident of Marstons Mills, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Falmouth Hospital after a long illness.

He was the husband of Joan C. (Harrell) Dion.

Born in New Bedford, Mr. Dion lived in Marstons Mills since 1971. He worked as a maintenance foreman for New England Telephone Co., and for his parents at Dion's Market and for 10 years at Metropolitan Insurance. He also owned Ann's Fruit Stand in New Bedford.

A World War II Navy veteran, he served on the USS Linderwald and the USS Schmitt.

In December of 1946, he was a communications operator on the Florida coast when Flight 19, a five-plane training squadron, was lost in the Bermuda Triangle. Mr. Dion has said that he remembers every detail of the day when the "mayday" of what was to become known as the "Lost Squadron" came into the Florida radio shack where he worked. He notes that at the time it didn't seem particularly strange. Air and sea rescue were his unit's job and training aircraft frequently went down in the ocean and were accounted for later. But the five planes of the Lost Squadron and a rescue aircraft sent to locate them just disappeared.

Mr. Dion was a communicant of Christ the King Church in Mashpee, where he was a cantor and choir member. He also belonged to the Men's Club and worked many years at bingo.

Surviving besides his wife are three daughters, Christine A. Rodriques of Dawsonville, Ga., Annettee M. Landreville and Patricia E. Farland, both of New Bedford; two sons, Gilbert T. H. Dion of New Bedford and Jean Z. "Buddy" Dion Jr. of Nantucket; a sister, Lucille Frigault of Plymouth; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three nephews; and several cousins.

A funeral Mass was held in St. Joseph Church, New Bedford.

Doris M. Dunn, 88

Holden ­ Doris M. (Gloster) Dunn, 88, a former Worcester city employee who leaves relatives on Cape Cod, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at the Oakdale Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in West Boylston after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late William Dunn.

Mrs. Dunn was born in Palmer and lived in the Jefferson section of Holden for 67 years.

She attended Palmer Schools and Bay Path College in Longmeadow.

Mrs. Dunn worked for the city of Worcester for 12 years as a senior clerk at the veterans services department. She retired in 1969.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Jefferson .

She is survived by three sons, William L. Dunn of West Barnstable, and Dwight F. and J. Bruce Dunn, both of Holden; close friend Basil DeBartello of Holden; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and grand-nieces.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary's Church, Jefferson .
