Bietre Zicko, 83

Hyannis ­ Bietre Zicko, 83, a Cape resident since 1979, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital.

He was the husband of the late Claire E. (Lyons) Zicko.

Born and raised in Natick, Mr. Zicko was a resident of Hyannis since 1979 and a former longtime resident of Natick. He graduated from Natick High School in 1935.

Mr. Zicko was a part owner of the Kentucky Package Store in Natick from 1938 until 1976. He was later associated with Daths Package Store in Wayland until his retirement in 1980.

A World War II veteran, he served with the Seabees in the Navy, attached to the First Marine Division in the South Pacific.

Surviving are three sons, Bruce D. Zicko and Brian S. Zicko, both of Hyannis, and Robert J. Zicko of Apex, N.C.; three brothers, Peter Zicko of Ocala, Fla., and Charles Zicko and Philip Zicko, both of Natick; two sisters, Marguerite David and Violet Canary, both of Natick; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Tanya L. Anshewitz-Brown, 26

Providence, R.I. ­ Tanya Lynn Anshewitz-Brown, 26, a former Hyannis resident, died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, in Providence.

She was the wife of Michael Brown. She worked as a bookkeeper.

Born in Falmouth, she was a former resident of Hyannis. She was educated in Barnstable schools and attended Cape Cod Community College.

She worked in day care centers on the Cape and was a resident of Providence for the past year.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her parents, Peter S. and Janet (Irwin) Anshewitz of Hyannis; two brothers, Eugene B. Bourn of Texas and Peter S. Anshewitz Jr. of Hyannis; a sister, Christine A. Anshewitz of Hyannis; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Sumner H. Babcock, 97

Wellesley Hills ­ Sumner H. Babcock, 97, a retired law firm partner, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

He was the husband of Margaret (Bassick) Munier and of Catharine Bushnell Jones, who died in 1965.

Born in Waterbury, Conn., Mr. Babcock was a resident of Wellesley Hills for almost 60 years and also of Cotuit for 35 years. He graduated from Springfield High School and received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1924 from Lafayette College, where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi honor society and Theta Delta Chi fraternity.

In 1927, he earned a bachelor of law degree from Harvard Law School, where he was vice president of the Legal Aid Society, and joined the law firm of Choate, Hall and Stewart. Three years later, he joined Bingham, Dana and Gould, where he was made a partner in 1937 and practiced law until his retirement in 1984. He was accepted to the American Arbitration Association's panel of arbiters in 1988.

Mr. Babcock was a resourceful trial lawyer, specializing in later years in complex civil litigation. He was involved in significant securities litigation.

He was a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a member of the Boston and American bar associations. He served from 1960 to 1962 as vice president of the Massachusetts Bar Association.

From 1953 to 1955, he was president of the Boston Bar Association. During this time he helped to negotiate the safe release of hostages and an end to the "Cherry Hill Rebellion" at Charlestown State Prison. He subsequently served as president of the Massachusetts Correctional Association and chairman of Gov. Christian Herter's advisory committee on correction.

The Boston Bar Association gave him a Public Service Award in 1982 and a Distinguished Service Award in 1996. At the same time, Bingham, Dana and Gould donated $100,000 to the Boston Bar Foundation in Mr. Babcock's honor.

He was selected as one of 350 "Grand Bostonians" cited for outstanding contributions to their fields as part of Boston's summerlong 350th birthday celebration in 1980.

After moving to Wellesley Hills in 1941, Mr. Babcock became a town meeting member in 1942 and was a member for the rest of his life. Until recently, he was a member of the Wellesley Board of Zoning Appeals.

He was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Wellesley Hills. He was also a member of the Law Club, Curtis Club, Villagers, Union Club and Skating Club of Boston, and a founding member of the Vorlager Ski Club.

A resident of Cotuit since 1964, he especially enjoyed spending summers there. He supported the Cotuit Athletic Association, Cotuit Mosquito Yacht Club, Santuit-Cotuit Historical Society and other local organizations.

He had lifelong interests in Lafayette College. He was president of the alumni association from 1947-48 and, after terms as alumni trustee and trustee, was made a trustee emeritus in 1975. He was awarded the Joseph E. Bell Alumni Distinguished Service Award.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, William S. Babcock of Dallas, Texas ; a daughter, Barbara B. Kirby of Milton; two stepsons, Stephen B. Munier of Newburyport and W. Timothy Munier of Marina Del Rey, Calif.; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at the First Congregational Church of Wellesley Hills. Burial was private.

Claire M. Casey, 81

Barnstable ­ Claire M. (Donovan) Casey, 81, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital, after a long illness.

She was the wife of Howard F. Casey for 59 years.

Born, raised and educated in Brighton, she graduated from Brighton High School and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston.

She worked for four years before her marriage as a secretary with her father at Dennis J. Donovan Credit and Collections in Brighton. Prior to her 1982 retirement to the Cape, she played an active role in the Merchant Marine Academy in King Point, N.Y., where she was in the Officers Wives Club, while her husband was Acting Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent. They wintered in Amelia, Florida.

Mrs. Casey was active in the Cape Cod Hospital Thrift Shop and was a past chairman. She was a member of the Holly Ridge Golf Club. She was also an avid painter, using both oils and watercolors and painting seascapes and landscapes.

She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Howard E Casey Jr., of Dingman Township, Pa., and Warren J. Casey of Chatham, N.J.; two daughters, Christine C. Rath of Concord, N.H., and Virginia C. Casey of Elkton, Md.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three nieces and three nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Francis Xavier Church, Hyannis. Burial followed at the National Cemetery in Bourne.

Emerson L. Cloutier, 81

Naples, Fla. ­ Emerson Leo Cloutier, 81, a resident of Naples and Marstons Mills, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at his home in Naples.

He was the husband of Marilyn (Russell) Cloutier.

Born in New Bedford, Mr. Cloutier moved to the Cape and graduated from Yarmouth High School at age 15. In 1940, he married Martha Robinson. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II as a first petty officer, serving from 1942 to 1945.

He was the proprietor of Emerson Cleaners in Dennisport, Osterville and Hyannis as well as the Mini Golf and Par Tee Freeze Ice Cream Parlor in Hyannis.

He married Marilyn Russell in 1989 and began wintering in Florida and spending summers on the Cape.

Mr. Cloutier was a member of the Tarpon Cove Yacht and Racquet Club in Naples, where he enjoyed playing tennis. He also enjoyed bowling and dancing.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother, Sarah Fontaine of Mashpee; four daughters, Amanda Hronek of Mashpee, Judy LaFrancois of Tiverton, R.I., Diane Cloutier of Naples and South Yarmouth, and Lori Cloutier Glenn of Bonita Springs, Fla.; three stepchildren, John B. Cotton Jr. of Osterville, Marilyn Cotton of Watertown and Cynthia Shulman of Marstons Mills; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Naples, 1095 Whipporwill Lane, Naples, Fla. 34105.

Walter S. Creswell, 73

Medford, Maine ­ Walter S. Creswell, 73, a former resident of Centerville, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at his home in Medford.

He was the husband of Marjory C. (England) Creswell, who died in 1996.

Born in Quincy, Mass., Mr. Creswell was raised and educated in Braintree, Mass. He joined the Navy while in high school and served in the North Atlantic during the D-Day invasion and later in the South Pacific during World War II.

After the war, he returned to Braintree and married in 1954. He lived in Braintree before moving to Centerville in 1961.

Mr. Creswell was a sales manager for the Fuller Brush Co. for a short time and also sold real estate. He purchased and managed the former Cape Cod Meat and Provisions Co. of Centerville and operated it until 1993 at which time he retired and moved to Maine.

While in Maine, he was active in town government.

An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a past master of the Cotuit Masonic Lodge and a former member of the Cotuit Sportsman Club. He was also an avid sailboat racing enthusiast while on the Cape.

Surviving are two sons, Stephen Creswell of Centerville and Paul Creswell of Marstons Mills; two brothers, Robert Creswell of Canton, Mass., and Ezra Creswell of Brunswick; a sister, Ethel Crispin of Brunswick; five grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a close friend and companion, Mary Rickaby of Harwich.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home, 160 W. Main St., Hyannis, with visitation at noon prior to service. Burial is private.

Margaret M. Cunningham, 77

Hyannisport ­ Margaret M. Cunningham, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at her home, after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late Edward A. Cunningham Jr.

Born, raised and educated in Boston, she move to the Cape in 1974.

She is survived by a son, Greg J. Cunningham of Oceanridge, Fla.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will celebrated at 10 a.m. Jan. 29 in St. Francis Xavier Church, 347 South Street, Hyannis. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Cemetery in Arlington.

John H. 'Jack' Deignan III, 62

Marstons Mills ­ John H. "Jack" Deignan III, 62, retired automobile salesman, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Cheryl (Amiot) Deignan.

Mr. Deignan was born in Providence. he served in the Army for four years and worked as an automobile salesman for many years in the Providence area and on Cape Cod. He retired due to illness in 1989.

He moved to Yarmouthport in 1972 and then to Marstons Mills in 1975.

He was a member of the Cape Cod YMCA, where he was a volunteer helping disabled children swim. He was an avid sports fan and played golf and gardened until his illness.

Besides his wife, Mr. Deignan is survived by two children, Dana P. Deignan of Warwick, R.I., and Jodie L. Deignan of East Falmouth; his mother, Marjorie (Kindelan) Deignan; three brothers, Michael Deignan and Stephen Deignan of Hilton Head, N.C. and Paul Deignan of Waters, Mich.; three sisters, Mary "Mini" Maser of Hilton Head, Sheila Brennan of Warwick, R.I., and Margaret Lisi of East Greenwich, R.I.; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial was in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
