Gladys M. Hegarty, 90

Cotuit ­ Gladys M. (Blanchard) Hegarty, 90, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at the Center for Optimum Care in Falmouth.

She was the wife of the late Clarence D. Hegarty.

Born, raised and educated in Weymouth, she was a homemaker for a number of years and began working later in life in the purchasing department at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. She retired in 1971, after about 13 years.

Mrs. Hegarty was a resident of Weymouth until 1971, moving briefly to Dover, Del., before moving to Cotuit in 1977.

She was a member of the Cotuit Federated Church Women's Fellowship and the Old Colony Club in South Weymouth.

She enjoyed needlework and was an avid bridge player.

She is survived by two sons, David A. Hegarty of Arlington, Texas , and Richard R. Hegarty of Quincy; a daughter, Virginia A. LeFavor of Cotuit; nine grandchildren; 14 greatgrandchildrcn; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in the Christ the King Chapel, Mashpee Commons, Mashpee. Burial was private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Children's Hospital Trust, 300 Longwood Ave., Boston, Mass. 02115.

H. Kendall Knapp, 76

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. ­ H. Kendall Knapp, 76, a resident of Greenfield, Mass., East Dennis and Fort Lauderdale, died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, in Fort Lauderdale.

He was the husband of Irene "Pom" (Sullivan) Knapp for 43 years.

Born in Buckland, Mass., Mr. Knapp was a longtime resident of Greenfield and a 1940 graduate of Greenfield High School. He was also a resident of East Dennis for 15 years and most recently a winter resident of Fort Lauderdale.

Mr. Knapp was the founder and co-owner of H.A. Knapp and Sons, from which he retired in 1984. His other business interests included real estate development and harness horse racing.

He served in the Army during World War II.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, H. Gregory Knapp of Centerville and Fort Lauderdale; five daughters, Gretchen Zelek of East Dennis and South Pasadena, Calif., Hilary Ann Mooney of Surrey, England, and Waitsfield, Vt., Kathryn Russ of Milan, Italy, Claire Knapp of Boston, and Rebecca Knapp of Taipei, Taiwan; a sister, Janice Wing of Shelburne Falls, Mass.; a brother, Donald Knapp; nine grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Funeral services were held in Fort Lauderdale.

A memorial service will be held in the spring in Greenfield, Mass., at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Amy 'Pat' Knott, 78

Barnstable ­ Amy "Pat" (Craig) Knott, 78, a Barnstable resident since 1949, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston after a brief illness.

She was the wife of William Daniel Knott for 50 years.

Born and raised in Watertown, Mrs. Knott later lived in Pennsylvania and New York City. She graduated from Endicott Junior College in 1942.

While in New York, she worked at Jordan Marsh, F.W. Schumacher and the Barbazon Modeling School.

During World War II, she served as a WAVE in the Naval Reserves as a gunners mate instructor.

From 1948 to 1949, she worked at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. For 35 years, she was the proprietor of Salt Acres Barn Shoppe with her husband's mother, Margaret C. Knott. She also was her husband's secretary in his yacht surveying business for many years as well as real estate in Barnstable.

She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and active in Unitarian Church programs. She was an avid gardener.

Surviving besides her husband are a son, David Allen Knott; a daughter, Meredith C. Pells; a sister, Margaret Craig Miner; three grandchildren, all of Barnstable; two nieces; and a nephew.

A memorial service was held at the Unitarian Church in Barnstable.

Burial was private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Unitarian Church, Barnstable, Mass. 02630; or to the Barnstable Fire Department Rescue Squad.

John N. Leite, 77

Oak Bluffs ­ John N. Leite, 77, a business owner and Army veteran, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Martha's Vineyard Hospital.

He was the husband of Rose M. (Ferreira) Leite, who died in 1972.

Born in Boston, Mr. Leite grew up in Harwich. While serving in the Army a battle injury caused him to be transferred to Martha's Vineyard Marine Hospital in Tisbury.

Mr. Leite worked for a period of time with the Oak Bluffs Highway Department and then started his own company, Martha's Vineyard Auto Salvage and Towing.

A member of the Our Lady, Star of the Sea Church, he was a member of the PA Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He also enjoyed fishing.

Surviving are three sons, John II of Marstons Mills, Bruce of Nevada and John W. III of Oak Bluffs; two daughters, Rosemarie Ennes and Roma Jean Hawn, both of Hyannis; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; six stepsons; a stepdaughter; 10 stepgrandchildren; and 12 great-stepgrandchildren.

A graveside service was held in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Oak Bluffs, with military honors by the Veterans of Martha's Vineyard.

Memorial donations may be made to the Martha's Vineyard Hospital, P.O. Box 1477, Oak Bluffs, Mass. 02557; or to the Windemere Nursing Home, P.O. Box 1747, Oak Bluffs, Mass. 02557.

Florence C. MacLellan, 96

Wakefield ­ Florence C. Mac Lellan, 96, who leaves family on the Cape, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Tobey Hospital in Wareham after a long period of failing health.

She was the wife of E. Robert Mac Lellan, who died in 1969.

Mrs. MacLellan was born in Boston and lived in Wakefield from 1944 until 1989.

She was a member of St. Florence Church, Wakefield and its Ladies Sodality.

Surviving are a son, Robert H. MacLellan of Centerville; a daughter, Marguerite A. Brown of Wakefield; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was held in St. Florence Church, Wakefield. Burial was in Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield.

Henry J. McKeown, 79

Centerville ­ Henry J. McKeown, 79, a Cape resident since 1983, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Rita L. (Reardon) McKeown.

Born in Westwood, Mr. McKeown lived in Westwood for 27 years and in Norwood for many years, where he was a 1939 graduate of Norwood High School. He was the co-owner of Shurfine Market in Norwood and High Street Market in Westwood.

He was a resident of the Cape since 1983 and lived in Centerville for the past seven years.

A Navy veteran, he was a member of the Norwood Knights of Columbus and Cape Cod Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of the Cape Cod Ski Club.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Janice M. McKeown of Newton; a son, Richard J. McKeown of Northampton; two sisters, Anne Connolly of Norwood and Mary Grace of Centerville; two brothers, Francis McKeown and John McKeown, both of Norwood; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the father of the late Henry J. McKeown Jr.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Margaret Mary's Church in Westwood.

Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Norwood.

Jessica L. McKenna, 97

Centerville ­ Jessica L. (Scigliano) McKenna, 97, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at the Cape Regency Nursing Home in Centerville.

She was the wife of the late Francis J. McKenna.

Born in Boston, she was a graduate of Scared Heart Academy in Worcester.

A longtime resident of the Worcester and Spencer areas, she lived in Centerville for the past five years.

She was a member of the Holy Rosary Church, as well as a member and past president of the Women's Guild in Spencer.

She is survived by a son, Francis J. McKenna Jr. of Hyannis, and three grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Kenneth R. McKenna.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial was private.

Jeffrey M. Merrick, 56

Gloucester ­ Jeffrey Mather Merrick, 56, who leaves family on the Cape, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at his home from cancer.

He was the husband of Ellen G. Preston.

Born in Boston, Mr. Merrick was raised in Lexington and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1966. He served as a commissioned officer in the Army until 1970.

After working in the advertising field, he became a self-employed woodcarver for many years on the Cape, in Ohio and Florida until he returned to Gloucester in 1982 to work for the Elliott Shipping Co.

In 1993, he initiated a fresh and frozen citrus trade from Florida to Europe for SeaTrade, a Dutch shipping company.

He had a great love for maritime history and also enjoyed sailing, flyfishing and playing the guitar.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Sacha K. Negron of Hyannisport; two stepsons, Henry C. Mustin of Marblehead and Owen P. Mustin of Washington , D.C.; a brother, David H. Merrick of Gloucester; and a grandchild.

A memorial service was held at the Independent Christian Church, Gloucester.

Memorial donations may be made to the Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center, 19 Duncan St., Gloucester, Mass. 01930.
