Edward Walter Preston, 85

Dennisport - Edward Walter Preston, 85, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Ruth C. (Anderson) Preston for 54 years.

Born in Dennisport, he lived there for most of his life. Educated in the Dennis schools, he was among the first group of Dennis students to graduate from the consolidated Dennis-Yarmouth High School in 1932. He attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and spent two summers working in Yellowstone National Park. He also served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Vermont.

Mr. Preston enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1938, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as chief boatswain mate. He returned to Dennisport and worked as a carpenter with the Cape Cod Local Union 624 until his retirement in 1976. He spent winters in Florida for many years.

A member and former deacon of the Pilgrim Congregational Church, he was also a 58-year member of Mount Horeb Lodge AF&AM. He was a former member of the Swan Lake Cemetery Commission.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, camping, traveling and bird carving.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Carol Canty of Hyannis and Patricia Preston of Santa Monica, Calif.; a brother, Vernon L. Preston of Dennisport; two sisters, Barbara L. Cottrell and Patricia J. Price, both of Sarasota, Fla.; three grandchildren; and several cousins.

A memorial service was held at the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Harwich Port. Burial was private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Dennis Rescue Squad, 883 Main St., West Dennis, MA 02670; or to the American Heart Association, 2 Whites Path, South Yarmouth, MA 02664.

Olivia Potter, 80

Fall River - Olivia (Cunha) Potter, 80, who leaves family on the Cape, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000 at the Catholic Memorial Home after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late Donald L. Potter.

Born in New Bedford, she was a lifelong resident of that city.

Mrs. Potter was formerly employed by Cornell-Dubilier Electric Corp. of New Bedford for 11 years as a supervisor, retiring in 1952.

A member of the First Congregational Church, she was also a member of the Auxiliary of Head of Westport Fire Association and the Ivy Circle of New Bedford. She was past Matron of Cortez Allen Chapter 161.- Order of Eastern Star of Westport and a member of the Southeastern Massachusetts "Royal Toppers" Association - Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Potter enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by two sons, Kenneth A. Potter II of Mystic, Conn., and Harry L. Potter of New Bedford; a daughter, Dawn L. Barry of Centerville; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

A funeral service was held at Kirby Funeral Home, 61 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford. Burial was in Acushnet Cemetery.

Nancy M. Sawyer, 69

Hyannis - Nancy May (Perry) Sawyer, 69, a homemaker, died Feb. 10, 2000 at her home.

She was the wife of George B. Sawyer.

A lifelong Cape resident, she was a resident of Hyannis and attended Barnstable schools.

She enjoyed knitting, sewing and caring for her grandchildren.

Surviving are five daughters, Deborah Farwell of Mashpee, Stephanie Sawyer, Colleen Coolbrith and Jennifer Sawyer, all of Hyannis, and Jacquelyn Menchaca of Alaska; a son, Scott Sawyer of Hyannis; a brother, Raymond Perry of Hyannis; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services were held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2578 in Hyannis.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

John D. Sheehan, 91

Centerville - John D. Sheehan, 91, retired attorney of Centerville, died Monday at the Cape Cod Pavilion Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after an illness.

He was the husband of Joann (Mahoney) Sheehan.

Born, raised and educated in Worcester, Mr. Sheehan graduated from a local high school and also graduated in 1930 from Holy Cross College in Worcester. He then went on to attend B.U. Law School and graduated from Northeastern University School of Law in 1934.

Mr. Sheehan began his law practice in Worcester and later in New York. He joined the Army at the beginning of World War II and became a major serving in the A.G.C.

After the war, he settled in the Springfield area where he worked for the U.S. government as a tax attorney for the treasury until retiring from government service in the early 1970s.

He also worked for a Springfield bank in their tax department for several more years before moving to Centerville in the late 1970s. He practiced for a short time on the Cape before retiring completely in the late 1980s.

He enjoyed golf, tennis and life in general, especially when he was with the family and friends who were very important to him.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Robert Sheehan of Duxbury; a daughter, Rosemary Snowling of Fort Washington , Md; six grandchildren; and three nieces and a nephew.

Funeral services were held at the Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home, 160 W. Main St., Hyannis, followed by a Mass at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Centerville.

Jane E. Woodburn, 51

Yarmouthport - Jane Ellen (Johnson) Woodburn, 51, a resident of Yarmouthport, died Feb. 9, 2000 at the Hospice House in Barnstable of cancer.

She worked for Nike in Exeter, N.H., and for Puritan Clothing Co. in Hyannis.

A creative, prize-winning, accomplished artist, she was a member of the Bayberry Quilters.

She is survived by her mother, Stella A. Johnson of Yarmouthport; a son, John W. Klasavich IV of Dennisport; a daughter, Kristin Bittrolff of Burlington, Vt.; a brother, Arthur M. Johnson Jr. of Natick; and a sister, C.J. (Carol Johnson) Miles of Seattle.

A memorial service was held Saturday at the First Congregational Church of Yarmouth in Yarmouthport.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

Louise M. Amorello, 73

Shrewsbury-Louise M. Amorello, 73, who also owned a home in Osterville, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester after a short illness.

She was the wife of John Amorello.

Surviving besides her husband are two sons, three daughters, a sister and seven grandchildren.

A Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 24 Mulberry St., Worcester, followed by burial in St. Johns Cemetery.

Uwe Boehme, 56

Eastham-Uwe Boehme, 56, a resident of Eastham, died Feb. 11, 2000 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.

Born, raised and educated in Germany, Mr. Boehme was a trained radio and television repairman.

He had immigrated to the United States in 1970 and continued working in his profession at the Osterville Radio and TV Repair Shop.

He is survived by a son, Frank Boehme of East Falmouth; his longtime companion, Rhoda Foley of Eastham; and his dear friends, Renate Markgraf of Osterville and Hans Szimmetat of West Barnstable.

At his wish he was cremated. Burial was private.

Gael Coakley, 73

Centerville-Gael Coakley, 73, a Cape resident since 1982, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000 at his home.

He was the husband of Betsy (Kelley) Coakley for 49 years.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., Mr. Coakley was raised in Newton. He attended Cranwell Preparatory School, Boston College and served in the Merchant Marine.

Mr. Coakley became president of Boston Burial Case Co. and later Gulf and Western Casket Corp. He and his family lived in Wellesley Hills before retiring to Cape Cod and Palm Beach, Fla., in 1982.

He was tireless in his efforts to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation after losing three children to the disease. He organized the Joey Coakley Memorial Golf Tournament after his son died of the disease at age 14 in 1975. This annual tournament went on to become one of the foundation's most successful fund-raising events.

He was also president of the Massachusetts Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for many years and remained a dedicated and loyal supporter until his death.

An avid golfer, he was well-known in the New England golf community. He was presented with the PGA Man of the Year award in 1979 for his sportsmanship and notable humanitarian endeavors. He was consistently recognized as one of the best senior golfers in the country, winning many major tournaments including the North-South Seniors Tournament in 1987.

A former member of the Charles River Country Club of Newton, he was a member of the Oyster Harbors Club in Osterville and the Ibis Golf and Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.

His childhood love of the ocean began in the waters off Buzzards Bay and was later shared with his family in Scraggy Neck and most recently in Centerville.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Gael Coakley of Latham, N.Y.; four daughters, Sharon McDonald of Norfolk, Ellen Kinlin of Osterville, Francie Crowley of Concord and Barbara Jay of Franklin; a sister, Mary Gushee of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and 15 grandchildren.

He was the father of the late Dorothy Lee Coakley, Joey A. Coakley and Michael Patrick Coakley.

The funeral at the Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home, 160 W. Main St., Hyannis, was followed by a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Michael P. Demetriou Sr., 74

Centerville-Michael Peter Demetriou Sr., 74, former owner of the Quarterdeck Lounge, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000 in his home.

He was the husband of Alice (Stasinakis) Demetriou.

Born and raised in Lynn, he graduated from Classical High School. He was a veteran of the Army and served during World War II in the European Theater.

Mr. Demetriou moved to the Cape in 1949 and, with his father-in-law, owned and operated the Italian Cantina Restaurant until 1967. Then he bought the Quarterdeck Lounge.

He sold the business in 1969 and went to work as a real estate broker for L.B.J. Realty until 1986. He served on the Cape Cod Board of Realty and was a member of the Hyannis Elks for 28 years, serving as trustee for 8 years.

He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of Hyannis since 1949 and had served on the board of directors. He was also a past member of the Church Building Committee.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons Peter Demetriou of Brewster and Paul Demetriou of Sarasota, Fla.; a daughter Mercy McGonigle of Centerville; a brother, James Demetriou of Peabody; four grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Michael P. Demetriou Jr.

After a service at St. George's Greek Orthodox Church in Centerville, burial was in the Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.
