George H. Murphy, 93

Elizabeth J. Murphy, 93

Hyannis - George H. Murphy, 93, and Elizabeth J. (Kelley) Murphy, 93, residents of Hyannis, died Oct. 23, 2000, following a fire in their home.

They were married for more than 62 years.

Mr. Murphy was born in Watertown and raised in Walpole. He graduated from Boston College and continued his education at Harvard University where he earned two master's degrees, one in history and one in education.

For many years, he owned and operated a real estate company in Newington, Conn. He also taught in Walpole, New Britain, Conn., and Barnstable, and was a substitute teacher at many schools on Cape Cod.

Mrs. Murphy was born in Walpole and was a graduate of Framingham State College, formerly the Framingham Normal School. She earned a master's degree in English from Boston University.

She dedicated her professional life to education, teaching school in Newington, Conn., Walpole and in Harwich for more than 40 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Murphy retired to Hyannis from Newington in 1966. They were avid gardeners, committed to education and devoted to their family. The couple's home, known as "Papa's Place," was the center of numerous family gatherings.

They are survived by a son, Paul G. Murphy of Franklin; two daughters, Elizabeth Anderson of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Patricia Kesler of South Yarmouth; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Murphy is also survived by a sister, Mary Delaney of Walpole.

Lizbeth 'Libby' Rosenquist, 62

Centerville - Lizbeth (Hamilton) "Libby" Rosenquist, 62, of Centerville, died Oct. 27, 2000, at Hospice House in Barnstable after a long illness.

Ms. Rosenquist was born in Abington, graduated from Thayer Academy in Braintree and attended Boston University.

She owned and operated Yankee Silversmith in Brockton for 17 years and was a longtime resident of Hanover before moving to Centerville 20 years ago.

Ms. Rosenquist earned a degree in graphic arts from Cape Cod Community College. She was accomplished in calligraphy, painting and drawing.

She earned her license in real estate and worked at Peter McDowell's real-estate office in Dennis for 10 years.

She had a green thumb, enjoyed her Siamese cats and was dedicated to breeding seal point Siamese cats.

Surviving are her 103-year-old mother, Myra (Naylor) Hamilton of Centerville; a daughter, Jennifer Anne Holmquist of Centerville; a son, Craig H. Rosenquist of Scituate; a brother, James Hamilton of South Dennis; and three grandchildren.

She was also the mother of the late Arthur S. Rosenquist III.

Brian K. Sheehan, 35

Cummaquid - Brian K. Sheehan, 35, a resident of Brewster, died Oct. 21, 2000, in Cummaquid after a long illness.

He was the son of Dr. John and Berna (Kelly) Sheehan of Cummaquid.

Mr. Sheehan graduated from Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School in 1984 and from Boston College in 1988. He worked for the High Brewster Restaurant and Inn for many years.

Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Sean Sheehan of West Dennis and Brendan Sheehan of Austin, Texas ; two sisters, Anne Stewart of Palo Alto, Calif., and Claire Sheehan of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; two aunts; two uncles; and several nieces and nephews.

Patricia E. 'Patty' Straughn, 49

Brewster - Patricia "Patty" Ellen (Brierly) Straughn, 49, of Brewster, a lifelong Cape Codder, died Oct. 17, 2000, at her home after a long illness.

She was the wife of Greg Straughn for 33 years.

She was born in Hyannis and educated in the Orleans, Brewster and Dennis-Yarmouth schools. During her lifetime, she lived in nine of the Cape's 15 towns.

Mrs. Straughn worked in a variety of jobs in Orleans, as a retail manager at Cumberland Farms and as a pharmacy technician at Brooks Pharmacy and Denmarks Pharmacy.

She loved animals and all of nature. She enjoyed boating, motorcycling and target shooting, but spent most of her time caring for her family and her friends.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Bridgett A. Osborne of Yarmouth; a son, Mark E. Straughn of Brewster; a sister, Marcia Schrieber of Harwich; a brother, Roland Brierly of Dennis; two grandchildren; and nearly 20 "adopted" children all over the country.

Marie L. Winter, 79

West Hyannisport - Marie L. (Miller) Winter, 79, a Cape resident since 1990, died Oct. 26, 2000, at the Windsor Nursing Home after a long illness with Parkinson's Disease.

She was the wife of Rodman O. Winter.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Winter was raised and educated in Germantown, Pa. She was a graduate of Germantown High School and of the Stenographers School.

She worked as an executive secretary for 25 years for Honeywell Inc. in Fort Washington , Pa.

Mrs. Winter enjoyed sewing, baking, cake decorating and gourmet cooking. She also enjoyed crafts.

Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Sandra Allen of West Hyannisport; and a niece and four nephews.

George V. Carr, 76

West Hyannisport - George V. Carr, 76, a resident of West Hyannisport, died Nov. 6, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.

Born in Avon, Mr. Carr was raised and educated in Brockton. He had been a resident of West Hyannisport for the past 15 years.

Mr. Carr was a World War II Navy veteran, serving in the Mediterranean aboard the USS Tillman.

He was the owner of the Boston Cash Register Co. for many years and also founded several other small businesses before retiring to the Cape.

An avid golfer, he was a member and past Senior Club Champion of the Pasadena Country Club in St. Petersburg, Fla. He was also a former member of the Thorny Lea Golf Club in Brockton.

He was a rated billiards player and an amateur prizefighter in his youth.

While living in Brockton, he was a longtime communicant of St. Edward's Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Suzanne O'Donnell of Brockton; two sons, Paul D. Carr of Wellesley and Michael D. Carr of Hyannis; a sister, Ann Brown of Falmouth; six grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his friend and caregiver, Suzanne McDowell.

Thomas W. Hedlund, 18

Hyannis - Thomas "Tom" W. Hedlund, 18, a former high school hockey player, died Nov. 8, 2000.

He was the son of Walter G. Hedlund and Jaycine C. (Consiglio) Hedlund, both of Hyannis.

Mr. Hedlund was born in Hyannis and raised and educated in Barnstable. He attended Hyannis West Elementary School and Barnstable-West Barnstable Elementary School. He attended Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School during his junior year and played varsity hockey. He graduated from Barnstable High School in June.

He played Barnstable Youth Hockey and was a volunteer assistant coach. He was a member of the Barnstable LaCrosse Club and was selected as one of two players to represent the club at the National All Star Tournament. He was an avid boater, fisherman, snow skier and snow boarder. He had planned to attend the Coast Guard Academy.

Surviving besides his parents are his maternal grandmother, Wilna (Mackintosh) Consiglio of Worcester; a brother, Daniel J. Hedlund of Hyannis; a sister, Marisa J. Hedlund of Brookline; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

James H. Hurley, 81

Marstons Mills - James H. Hurley, 81, a retired machinist, died Nov. 5, 2000, at the Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Centerville.

He was the husband of Anna (Mroczka) Hurley for 52 years.

Born in Newton Highlands, Mr. Hurley was educated in Newton schools. During World War II, he served in the Army in Europe. He was a resident of Needham from 1947 to 1987 before moving to Marstons Mills.

A machinist, he worked for Stow-Woodward and then for Damon Industries until retiring in 1984.

Mr. Hurley was a communicant of Christ the King Parish, where he served as an usher, a custodian and a bingo worker.

Besides his wife he is survived by a son, James L. Hurley of Marstons Mills; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Wayne R. Kropa, 33

Laguna Hills, Calif. - Wayne Robert Kropa, 33, a former Cape resident, died Oct. 26, 2000, when the airplane he was co-piloting crashed in the mountains in California due to a malfunction of the aircraft.

He was the husband of Julie Kropa.

Mr. Kropa was born in Methuen and grew up in North Reading and Centerville. He was a graduate of Barnstable High School.

A resident of Laguna Hills, Mr. Kropa was a supervisor of airplane maintenance at the John Wayne Airport in Orange County. He was an active member of his church and a devoted father.

Besides his wife and daughter, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gomer Kropa of Centerville; a daughter, Robin Kropa; a sister, Susan Kropa of Meredith, N.H.; two brothers, Dr. William Kropa of Marblehead and Dale Kropa of Bedford, N.H.; and two stepdaughters, Kristen and Kaitlyn Saulman.

James B. Ludtke, 76

Hyannisport - James "Jim" Buren Ludtke, 76, a resident of Hyannisport, died Nov. 3, 2000, at his home. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in January 1999 and had been undergoing treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital and Cape Cod Hospital.

Mr. Ludtke was born and raised in Waterloo, Iowa. In 1942 he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II. After four years of military service, he returned to college and earned a doctorate in economics from State University of Iowa, Iowa City, in 1951.

He was a retired professor of finance and a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve.

Mr. Ludtke taught for more than 30 years at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He served on numerous university committees, became secretary/moderator of the faculty senate, was regional chairman of the American Association of University Professors and was a department chairman for 12 years.

He was a Sloan fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a frequent participant in faculty fellowships and workshops. He authored a text that helped to establish the "flow of funds" concept as a seminal approach in teaching financial theory. During 1968-69, just before the advent of the European common market, he researched British financial institutions. He belonged to several professional societies.

Despite his other accomplishments, Mr. Ludtke considered his most important role that of a father.

He enjoyed tennis, sailing, swimming and golf, and he always walked the course when he could. He was a member of the YMCA, where he worked out regularly until recently.

He is survived by his wife, five children, two brothers and three grandchildren.
