James T. Maheris, 58

Hyannis - James T. Maheris, 58, a resident of Hyannis and Lenox, died unexpectedly Nov. 6, 2000, in Plymouth.

Born in Arlington, Mr. Maheris was a 1960 graduate of Melrose High School. He attended Boston University for two years, and graduated from Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., where he received a bachelor's degree in physics in 1965. He also received a master's degree in business administration and in statistics from R.P.I.

Mr. Maheris settled in Lenox and worked for more than 32 years at General Electric in Pittsfield, retiring in 1999. He lived in Hyannis and Lenox from time to time.

A longtime member of the Pittsfield Country Club, he was an avid bridge player and enjoyed computers, photography and kayaking. He also held a longtime interest in general science.

He is survived by his parents, Trefon J. Maheris Sr. and Anna (Coulouris) Maheris, both of Hyannis, formerly of Melrose; a brother, William J. Maheris of Melrose; three nieces; and a grandnephew.

Lena M. Oglesby-Spells, 81

Hyannis - Lena M. Oglesby-Spells, 81, who was active at St. Francis Xavier Church, died Nov. 5, 2000

Born in Savannah, Ga., she moved to New York City in 1935 and then to Hyannis in 1968. She worked as a health service professional for 50 years.

Mrs. Oglesby-Spells had been an active member of St. Francis Xavier Church, serving as a CCD instructor, lector and as an Eucharistic Minister. She was also a member of the Spirit of Jesus Prayer Group, and at one time was formerly one of that group's co-directors.

She was a recipient of the Marian Medal.

She enjoyed her two dogs, Edgar and Samurai.

Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Oglesby; a sister, Irene Wadley; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Bob Payne, 73

Centerville - Bob Payne, 73, a resident of Centerville, died of multiple myeloma Nov. 5, 2000, at his home.

He was the husband of Arleen (Burke) Payne.

Born in Boston, Mr. Payne lived in Dorchester until 1938 when he and his family moved to Milton. He attended Milton High School, where he was active in many sports, including football, hockey, baseball and track.

Upon graduating, he enlisted in the Naval Air Force.

After the war, Mr. Payne attended Thayer Academy in Braintree. He also attended Champlain College in Plattsburg, N.Y., class of 1951, where he excelled in hockey and football.

Mr. Payne worked at Eastern Airlines for 37 years and was a manager in the Boston, Miami and Houston airports. He retired in 1987.

He became a shellfisherman, later managing and operating the Val Pak advertising business on the Cape.

Mr. Payne was a daily communicant of Holy Redeemer Church as well as a Eucharistic minister, a lecturer and a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Knights of Columbus and the Men's Club.

A Cape Cod resident for 21 years, he lived in Chatham for 15 years before moving to Centerville. In Centerville, he attended Our Lady of Victory Church and Our Lady of Hope Church, where he was a Eucharistic minister and lecturer.

He enjoyed camping trips throughout Canada, spending time at the Trappist Monastery in Spencer, oil painting and helping organize and play in the Cape's "Old Timers" softball league. He and his wife enjoyed raising white doves and gardening.

Surviving besides his wife are three daughters, Kathleen Cade of Houston, Eileen Groom of Mashpee and Patricia Stinson of Moultonboro, N.H.; a son, Robert Payne Jr. of Harwich; three stepchildren, Ted Gumienny of Clearwater, Fla., Patricia Courtney of Jacksonville, Fla., and Kathleen Gumienny of Falmouth; two brothers, George Payne of Bedford and Richard Payne of Fairport, N.Y.; two sisters, Jean Nickerson of Kingston and Helen Roode of Cleveland, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the father of the late Mary Friex.

Arthur R. Peterson, 82

Cotuit - Arthur R. Peterson, 82, a Cape resident since 1976, died Nov. 5, 2000, at the Brewster Senior Care Center.

Born in Pembroke, Mr. Peterson was a World War II Army veteran, serving in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He was a technician for Hotpoint in Chicago for 32 years.

He moved to Cotuit in 1976.

Surviving are a sister, Barbara Pendergast of Elizabeth City, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

Paul G. Queeney, 79

Centerville - Paul G. Queeney, 79, a resident of Centerville, died Nov. 6, 2000, in Hyannis after an illness.

Born in Dorchester, Mr. Queeney was raised and educated in Milton. He was also a graduate of Northeastern University, where he earned a master's degree.

He served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned home to Milton.

Mr. Queeney was employed at the Walter Baker Chocolate Co. in Dorchester until his retirement in 1975. He moved to Centerville from Milton in the late 1990s.

He enjoyed golfing and bowling.

Surviving are a brother, James R. Queeney of Osterville; an aunt, Helen O'Leary of West Roxbury; six nieces; a nephew; two grandnieces; and a grandnephew.

Raymond C. 'Chip' Roy IV, 22

Hyannis - Raymond C. "Chip" Roy IV, 22, a resident of Hyannis, died Nov. 5, 2000, in New York City.

He was the son of Raymond C. Roy III of Hyannis and Song Chong of Woodhaven, N.Y.

Born in Lawton, Okla., he was raised in Yarmouth. He was a 1996 graduate of Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, where he played basketball. He attended Kingsboro Junior College in Queens, N.Y., and was enrolled in Brooklyn College, where he majored in physical training.

While away at school, he worked at Home Depot and taught tae kwon do in Queens, N.Y.

Besides his parents he is survived by a brother, Stephen Roy of Providence, R.I.; and a cousin, Tiffany Roy of Hyannis.

Sally L. Tripp, 65

Amherst - Sally L. Tripp, 65, a former Cape resident, died Oct. 30, 2000, at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.

Miss Tripp was born in Concord, N.H. She received a bachelor's degree in nursing from Hood College in Frederick, Md. and a master's degree in psychiatric and mental health nursing from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Her first nursing job was at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She moved to the Cape and joined Hyannis Pediatrics for several years. Her parents, the late Russell F. and Dorothy (Lane) Tripp, lived in Yarmouth for 35 years.

She worked as an assistant professor at the Well Elderly Nursing Center at the University of Massachusetts, as an assistant professor and director of the Wellness Center at Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee, and as a nurse practitioner consultant for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health.

Most recently, Miss Tripp was the program director for senior health services at Hampshire County Visiting Nurse Association in Northampton.

She was a member of the Massachusetts Nurses Association, the National League for Nurses of North America and the Mary Mattoon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Surviving are a brother, Richard Tripp of Bolton, one nephew and two nieces.

Samuel J. 'Sam' Valera, 89

Santuit - Samuel J. "Sam" Valera, 89, a who worked at Otis Air National Guard Base, died Nov. 4, 2000, at the JML Care Center in Falmouth.

Born in Sicily, Mr. Valera came to Fitchburg as an infant.

Mr. Valera was the manager of the Base Exchange at Otis Air Force Base and worked as a bartender at the former Melia's Cafe in Mashpee. He retired in 1975 from Packaging Industries in Hyannis.

Mr. Valera operated a vegetable and flower stand, "Sam's Garden," on Route 28 in Santuit. He was also an avid fisherman.

He played semi-pro football for the Putnam Bulldogs and was a Golden Gloves Middleweight State Champion in the early 1930s.

Surviving are a son, Anthony C. Valera of Woonsocket, R.I.; a daughter, Linda Butzke of Oakham; a sister, Grace Leger of Fitchburg; three grandsons; two great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Jane Anderson, 75

Brewster - Mary Jane (Walsh) Anderson, 75, a resident of Brewster and former South Yarmouth resident, died Nov. 19, 2000, in Eastham after a long illness.

She was the wife of John R. Anderson for 52 years.

Born in Mount Kisco, N.Y., Mrs. Anderson was raised in Westchester County, N.Y. She attended the Miseracordia Nursing Hospital in New York and became a registered nurse.

Mrs. Anderson worked at the Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco until 1975. She moved to the Cape in 1975 and worked at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis as a registered nurse with the I.V. Team. She retired in 1990.

Surviving besides her husband are three sons, John Anderson of Brewster, James Anderson of Dorchester and William Anderson of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Christine Nelson of South Yarmouth; and a grandchild.

Gordon S. Baker, 73

Centerville - Gordon S. Baker, 73, a resident of Centerville, died unexpectedly Nov. 17, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Baker was born in New Bedford and raised and educated in Fairhaven. He served in the Navy during World War II on the aircraft carrier USS Princeton. After the war he lived in both Oak Bluffs and Centerville. He began working for AT&T from the Hyannis office, retiring in 1989 after 42 years.

Mr. Baker was a direct descendant of Francis Baker of 1633 of England, who settled in Falmouth and is the first man to have a recorded marriage on the Cape.

Mr. Baker was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Hyannis and the National Rifle Association. He was a longtime member of the Fraternal Lodge of Masons AF&AM in Centerville.

Surviving are a son, Scott Baker of New York City; and a sister, Eleanor Eklund of Wheaton, Ill.

Walter Crowell Cahoon, 59

Hyannis - Walter Crowell Cahoon, 59, a compositor and assistant page designer at the Cape Cod Times for 35 years, died Nov. 21, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital of complications due to diabetes and congestive heart failure.

Born on Nantucket, Mr. Cahoon was a graduate of Nantucket High School and a Linotype school in Boston.

He was an Army veteran and served in Germany in the 1950s.

Mr. Cahoon was a 3rd degree Mason and former Worshipful Master of the Fraternal Lodge A.M. and A.F. when the lodge was located in Hyannis.

He started his career in newspaper work in Nantucket, first for the Town Crier, then the Inquirer & Mirror, and later for The Barnstable Patriot in Hyannis before working at the Cape Cod Times.

He was an avid stamp collector and sports fan, who enjoyed golfing and loved books.

Survivors include his aunt who raised him, Anna M. (Cahoon) Worth of Nantucket; another aunt, Katherine Cahoon Ayotte of Centerville; two uncles; and numerous cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at the Federated Church of Hyannis, on Main Street.
