Arne D. Smith, 91

West Barnstable - Arne D. (Closson) Smith, 91, a Cape resident since 1956, died Jan. 15, 2001.
She was the wife of the late Lloyd R. Smith.
Born in Connecticut, Mrs. Smith was raised and educated in Rhode Island. She was a 1931 graduate of Newport Hospital School of Nursing and also graduated from Bridgewater Teacher's College.
Mrs. Smith was a resident of Newport, R.I., and Cranston, R.I., before moving to Hyannis in 1956 and to West Barnstable in the mid-1960s, where she had lived since.
She was a teacher and nurse at Cotuit Elementary School for a number of years, retiring in the mid-1960s.
Surviving are two sons, L. Rogers Smith of Winter Haven, Fla., and Edward C. Smith of Centerville; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Isobel M. Smith, 66

Centerville - Isobel M. Smith, 66, a resident of Centerville, died Jan. 15, 2001, at the Cape Cod Hospital Nursing and Rehabilitation Center - Pavilion in Hyannis after an illness.
Born and raised in Boston, she was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She settled in Danvers and later moved to Centerville. She also lived a short time in East Dennis.
She worked for more than 35 years at the Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. of Boston as an underwriter in Boston until retiring in 1991.
An avid gardener, she also loved to do needlepoint. She also stayed very active with her college sorority.

Megan M. Tripp, 20

Barnstable - Megan Marie Tripp, 20, a graduate of Barnstable High School, died Jan. 14, 2001, in Sydney, Australia, while on a college class trip.
Born in Plymouth, Miss Tripp grew up in Barnstable Village. She was a 1998 graduate of Barnstable High, where she spent four years on the golf team.
She was pursuing a degree in elementary education at Elon College in North Carolina, where she was on the women's golf team and on both the dean's and president's lists.
Miss Trip was active in her local community. She was a Girl Scout, a DARE counselor and a lifeguard and sailing instructor for the Barnstable Recreation Department.
Miss Tripp was a member of the First Lutheran Church of West Barnstable. She was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed traveling and working with children. The past two summers, she worked at the Oyster Harbors Club and provided child care for a local family.
She participated in numerous golf tournaments at college and with the Women's Golf Association of Massachusetts. A member of the Cummaquid Golf Club, she won the women's club championship last year.
Miss Tripp is survived by her parents, Carla Wieners of Barnstable and Robert Tripp of Dry Ridge, Ky.; her stepfather, William Wieners; her stepmother, Sharon Tripp; two step-brothers; three stepsisters; and numerous extended family members.

Barbara Zuchero, 73

Kirkland, Wash. - Barbara (MacIsaac) Zuchero, 73, a native of Hyannis, died Oct. 28, 2001, at Evergreen Vista in Kirkland.
She was the wife of Daniel Zuchero, who died in 1992.
Born in Hyannis, Mrs. Zuchero was a 1944 graduate of Barnstable High School. She also graduated from Truesdale Hospital in Fall River and became a registered nurse. She then married and moved west.
Surviving are two daughters, Terri DuBeau of Kirkland and Donna Lunn of Crestline, Calif.; two sons, Joseph Zuchero and Daniel Zuchero, both of Kirkland; a sister, Ellen Lillian Molloy of Hyannis; a brother, Pat MacIsaac of Yarmouthport; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

John R. Berry Jr., 74

Hyannisport - John R. Berry Jr., 74, a Cape resident since 1950, died Jan. 25, 2001, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
He was the husband of Ruth Anderson Berry for 50 years.
Mr. Berry was born and educated in Fall River. He graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School in 1944; from Bridgewater State Teachers College in 1949; and he earned a master of science degree in education from Boston University in 1952.
Mr. Berry was a World War II Army veteran.
He had been a Cape resident since 1950 and a Hyannisport resident since 1974. He taught in Wareham and Falmouth from 1949 until 1957, and then became principal of Hyannis Elementary School. In 1963, he became principal of the new Hyannis West Elementary School. He retired in 1989.
Mr. Berry was affiliated with Wareham and Falmouth teachers organizations, the Barnstable County Educators Association, the Cape and Islands Elementary Principals Association, the Massachusetts Elementary Principals Association, and the National Association of Elementary Principals.
He served as a town meeting representative and was elected to the first Barnstable Town Council. He was also a member of the Barnstable Drug Committee and Human Services Committee.
Mr. Berry had operated summer food concessions at Sandy Neck and Veterans Park from 1954 through 1987.
He was a longtime member of the Federated Church of Hyannis, serving on numerous church committees from 1950 until the present.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Anders Taylor Berry of Great Falls, Mont.; two daughters, Kristin Anderson Baljon of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Erika Sandstrom Berry of Washington , D.C.; and three grandchildren.

Jacqueline A. Bonner, 67

Centerville - Jacqueline A. (Pidgeon) Bonner, 67, a Cape resident since 1997, died Jan. 22, 2001, after a brief illness.
She was the wife of John C. Bonner for 48 years.
A lifelong resident of Framingham, she and her husband retired to Centerville in 1997. She graduated from Framingham High School in 1951.
An avid antiques dealer, she owned and operated the Blue Onion Antiques business since 1972.
Mrs. Bonner was a lifelong member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Framingham, where she served on the vestry and as a directress of the Altar Guild and president of Church Women. In 1965, along with other church members, she marched with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King in Selma, Ala. She was a member of the Framingham Republican Town Committee and served as president of the Young Republican Club of Framingham.
Surviving besides her husband are three children, Jacqueline B. Crawley of Franklin, John C. Bonner Jr. of Franklin and Scott D. Bonner of Millbury; three sisters, Janet Ingram of Marshfield, Evadne Coolidge of Framingham and Barbara Bauder of Wellfleet; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Altar Guild, St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Main Street, Barnstable, MA 02630; or to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Edward Dimock, 71

Centerville - Edward Dimock, 71, who was known as "Ed" to his students and "Cam" to his family and contemporaries, died Jan. 18, 2001, at his home.
He was the husband of Loraine Dimock.
Born in Roslindale, Mr. Dimock graduated from Roxbury Latin in 1946 and received a bachelor's degree in 1950 from Yale University. He completed his academic training at Harvard University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1959. He joined the faculty of the University of Chicago in 1959 as an assistant professor in Linguistics and Oriental Languages.
During his early years at the university, he played an influential role in the formation of South Asian Languages and Civilizations, the department in which he would accept the status of professor in 1966.
Mr. Dimock, who first traveled to Calcutta, India, with his family in 1955, was a father figure to many American scholars who studied in India after World War II, helping them make their way in the foreign country.
From 1972 to 1986, he served as president of the American Institute for Indian Studies, the most important academic bridge between the United States and India. Mr. Dimock and his colleague Milton Singer at Chicago helped W. Norman Brown of the University of Pennsylvania organize the institute in 1962, which moved to the University of Chicago in 1972.
A distinguished service professor emeritus in South Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago, Prof. Dimock's scholarly publications include "The Thief of Love: Bengali Tales from Court to Village" (Chicago, 1963); "The Place of the Hidden Moon: Erotic Mysticism in the Vaisnava-Sahajiya Cult of Bengal" (Chicago, 1966); "In Praise of Krishna" (Chicago, 1967), a volume of poetry translated in collaboration with Denise Levertov, and most recently, "The Caitanya-Caritamrta of Krsnadasa Kaviraja" (Harvard, 1999). He was also the author of a widely used introductory Bengali language textbook and several volumes of essays.
In addition to his numerous awards and honors, in 1992 the Indian government awarded Mr. Dimock its highest honorary degree title, Desikottama, for his work on Bengali literature.
In 1999, Algonquin Books published "Mr. Dimock Explores the Mysteries of the East," a personal narrative of his thoughts and experiences with India. At the time of his death, he was completing "Chips from a Cape Cod Pasture," a book of reflections on his connections to the region, which his family plans to publish in the future.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Jonathan Dimock of Knoxville, Tenn., Christopher Dimock of Chicago, Ill., and Edward Dimock of Brookline; two daughters, Holly Charnota of Romeoville, Ill., and Heather Pike of Centerville; a brother, George Dimock of Harvard; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made in his memory to support the fight against cancer or to the American Institute of Indian Studies.

Robert Merrill Doane, 74

Boynton Beach, Fla. - Robert Merrill Doane, 74, a former resident of Cape Cod, died Jan. 11, 2001, at Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach.
He was the husband of Reita (Sherwin) Doane for 53 years.
Mr. Doane was born and raised in Cotuit. He graduated from Barnstable High School in 1944 and Franklin Institute in Boston.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II. His career was spent working in the field of electronics and in real estate.
He was a member of Masonic Northern Constellation Lodge #2911 in Malone, N.Y.
