Marcia B. Epstein, 66

Centerville ­ Marcia Bloch Epstein, 66, died April 24, 2001, in Hospice House, Barnstable, after a brief illness.
She was the wife of Jerry Epstein for 46 years.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she graduated from Cleveland Heights High School. She was a graduate of Brandeis University in 1955 and earned a master's degree from Western Reserve University in 1957. She received a doctorate in educational foundations and curriculum from Ohio State University in 1981.
Dr. Epstein was an associate of Synergetic Development Inc., an educational assessment consulting firm that worked with school systems throughout the United States.
She was an assistant superintendent and a principal of controlled choice in Winston-Salem, N.C., where she was a pioneer in the field of education and special needs student empowerment. While in Winston-Salem, Dr. Epstein was a member of Leadership Winston-Salem and the Triad Leadership Council.
She served on numerous community boards in Ohio, North Carolina and Massachusetts. In Massachusetts she was a board member of the American Heart Association, the Affordable Housing Committee and the League of Women Voters, where she had recently been asked to serve as vice president.
Dr. Epstein was active in the Jewish community and was a lifelong member of Haddasah. She served two terms as president of Temple Emanuel in Winston-Salem. She was also active in Jewish education, serving as secondary education coordinator for Tiffereth Israel Synagogue in Columbus, Ohio, in the late 1960s, and as an elementary grades supervisor for the Park Synogogue in Cleveland.
Surviving besides her husband are a son, Jonathon of Kent, Ohio; a daughter, Alisa Epstein-Morgan of New York; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Cape Cod Synagogue in Hyannis.
Memorial donations may be made to the Marcia Bloch Epstein Educational Fund at Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts.

Frances E. Clarke Johnson, 92

Brewster - Frances E. (Bassett) Clarke Johnson, 92, died April 23, 2001, at Epoch Living Center, Brewster, after a long illness.
She was the former wife of the late Harold Clarke, and wife of the late Thomas Johnson.
Mrs. Johnson was born, raised and educated in Hyannis. She graduated from Northfield Seminary and the New England Conservatory of Music. She was a well-known concert pianist and music teacher in Hyannis, and was organist at the First Baptist Church before moving to Maine in 1960. She returned to the Cape in 1998.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Clarke Cromarty of Harwich, four grandsons; and two great-grandsons.
A memorial service was held at Hamel, Wickens and Troupe Funeral Home in Harwich, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery in Hyannis.

John E. Joseph, 66

Hyannis - John E. Joseph, 66, died April 23, 2001, at The Greenery, after a long illness.
He was the husband of Jacqueline (Brailey) Joseph.
As a boy, he enjoyed delivering milk with his uncle. Later, he worked for First National Supermarkets in Connecticut before serving in the Navy Seabees on Guam, Okinawa, and Saipan as an electrical technician.
In 1959, he joined the U.S. Postal Service and worked at the Hyannis Post Office. He became a member of the Million Mile Club for drivers. Upon his retirement in 1998, he received a letter from U.S. Rep. William Delahunt and a flag, which was flown at the Massachusetts Statehouse in honor of his 39 years in the postal service.
Mr. Joseph was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed fishing and listening to big band and swing music.
Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Gary, Eric and Gerald Joseph, all of Hyannis; two sisters, Shirley Piche of Hyannis, and Cathy Crowley of West Haven, Conn.; and two brothers, Paul Saldibar of West Haven, Conn., and James Joseph. of Jupiter, Fla.

Jon K. Kristiansen, 69

Hyannis - Jon Kristian Kristiansen, 69, died April 23, 2001, at Cape Heritage Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Sandwich.
He was the husband of Carol Kristiansen of Barnstable.
He was born in Feoy, Norway, and attended Feoy schools, graduating in 1947 from Feoy High School.
He was a commercial fisherman in Norway and later moved to New Bedford to work as a fisherman for the Tonnesson Fishing Company, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Fisherman's Union in New Bedford for 25 years.
Mr. Kristiansen had been a resident of Hyannis since 1971.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Noelle A. Kristiansen of Barnstable; a son, Thomas A. Kristiansen of East Taunton; and three sisters, Bertha, Sophie, and Borghild, all of Norway.
Memorial donations may be made to the Mariners Home, 15 Johnny Cake Lane, New Bedford, MA 02740.

Glenna E. Marshall, 76

Cotuit - Glenna E. Marshall, 76, died April 27, 2001, at at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, after a brief illness.
She was born in Cotuit and was a lifelong resident. She was a 1942 graduate of Barnstable High School.
Mrs. Marshall was a self-employed bookkeeper for various businesses in the Cape area, including the Falmouth Enterprise and Arnold Anderson Certified Public Accountants. She was also a seamstress and made costumes for Wallace Morrow Dance Studios, Margaret Rogers Dance Academy and the Barnstable High School Color Guard.
She was an avid hockey fan, and enjoyed children and youth activities and sports. She was commonly and affectionately referred to as "Grandma" by everyone.
She was a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Tribal Council.
She leaves two sons, Glenn A. Marshall of Falmouth and Jeff L. Marshall Sr. of Cotuit; a daughter, Ruth A. Gardner of Hyannis; two brothers, Matthew F. Pells Jr. of Cotuit and James H. Pells of Hobe Sound, Fla.; two sisters, Doris Dunnick of Van Nuys, Calif., and Wilhemina Twohig of Yarmouth; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held in the Old Indian Meetinghouse in Mashpee, with burial in the Old Indian Cemetery.

John A. McDonald, 77

Hyannisport - John A. McDonald, 77, died April 21, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital.
He was the husband of Frances (Reipe) McDonald of Hyannisport.
He was born, raised and educated in New London, Iowa. He attended Burlington Junior. College
Mr. McDonald was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater. He re-enlisted in the Army after the war and was assigned to the Pentagon in Washington , D.C., where he served four years before retiring.
After spending time out West, he and his wife moved to Cape Cod, settling in Hyannisport, where Mr. McDonald launched a new career as a piano technician and rebuilder.
He was a member of the South Congregational Church and the Piano Technicians Guild, and was an avid fisherman
Besides his wife, he is survived by a brother, Robert McDonald of Biloxi, Miss.; a step-sister, Doris Mae Deck of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at South Congregational Church in Centerville. Burial will be at a later date at Burge Cemetery in New London, Iowa.

Jane Ann Smith, 69

Hyannis - Jane Ann (Small) Smith, 69, of Hyannis, died April 25, 2001, at her home.
She was the wife of the late Charles G. Smith. She attended the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. She was a painter known for her beautiful watercolors and egg temperas.
Mrs. Smith was a longtime member of a local bridge group and the Hyannis Yacht Club. She was a volunteer at the Hyannis Public Library.
She is survived by two sons, Peter Gonzalez of Hyannis and Charles Smith Jr. of Maine; two daughters, Martha McLane of Centerville and Ann Gonzalez of Seattle; three brothers, Alan Small of Osterville, Hubert Small of Hyannis and Ned Small of New York; a sister, Mary Loggins of Atlanta; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial was held at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville, with burial following at Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.
Memorial donations may be made to the Guyer Barn Gift Fund, P.O. Box 693, Hyannis, MA 02601; or to the Hyannis Public Library Association, 401 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Barbara A. Swanson, 74

Martsons Mills - Barbara Ann (McCormick) Swanson, a former resident of Sudbury, died April 22, 2001, at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.
She was the wife of Carl E. Swanson for 49 years.
Born in Lynn, she was a graduate of Somerville High School.
Mrs. Swanson worked as a service representative for New England Telephone Co. and as a secretary at Concord Carlisle High School.
She was a resident of Sudbury for 28 years before moving to Marstons Mills eight years ago.
She was formerly the chairwoman of the altar guild at First Lutheran Church, West Barnstable, and was a member of the Osterville Garden Club. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and travel.
Surviving besides her husband, are two sons, David Swanson of Folsom, Calif., and Erik Swanson of Oxford; a daughter, Karen Swanson of Bethel, Maine; two brothers, William McCormick of Brewster (her twin), and Daniel Desmondof Delaware; and two grandchildren.
The funeral was held at First Lutheran Church in West Barnstable. Burial was private.
