John A. Walsh, 72

Everett - John A. Walsh, 72, died April 25, 2001, in Whidden Memorial Hospital, Everett, of complications due to diabetes.
He was the husband of Mary Lou Walsh.
He was born in South Boston and lived most of his life in Everett.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a military policeman in Japan.
Mr. Walsh was as an engineer at the Raytheon Company for 30 years and worked on projects for the Poseidon missile submarine and the Apollo rocket.
He worked on the political campaigns of his friends the late James R. Plunkett, former mayor of Everett, and James Ryan of Everett.
From 1982 to 1990, he lived in Marstons Mills.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mary Lou Jones of Quincy; three sons, John M. Walsh of Medford, William Walsh of Andover and David E. Walsh of Marstons Mills; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held at J.F. Ward Funeral Home in Everett, with burial in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the one's choice.

Frances L. West, 85

North Falmouth - Frances L. West, 85, died April 9, 2001, in Rock Island, Ill.
She was born in Rhode Island.
During World War II, Miss West worked in hospital service with the American Red Cross in England.
During the 1960s, she worked for E. F. Hutton in Hyannis, and was often heard giving radio stock market reports. She retired in 1970.
She also was a co-owner of the cottages next door to the Melody Tent in Hyannis.
She is survived by a nephew, Richard West of Attleboro.

Dorothy T. Wilkey, 75

Vernon, Maine - Dorothy T. (Rosbrough) Wilkey, 75, formerly of Cape Cod, died April 23, 2001, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland following a short illness.
She was the wife of Harold R. Wilkey.
Ms. Wilkey was born in Worcester and raised and educated in Shrewsbury. She attended college in the Worcester area. She moved to Cape Cod in the 1940s to help manage the family business, the Red Rose Inn in West Yarmouth, now operated by her son.
She also worked for more than 30 years in the credit department of Puritan Clothing in Hyannis, retiring in 1990.
After retiring, she and her husband moved to Maine.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Richard A. Wilkey of Yarmouth and Harold J. Wilkey of Hyannis; and two grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was held at St. Pius X Church, Station Avenue in South Yarmouth. Burial followed at Woodside Cemetery in West Yarmouth.

Ernest C. Blackburn, 80

Lake Worth, Fla. - Ernest Clyde Blackburn, 80, a resident of Durand, Mich., and Lake Worth and formerly of Fairhaven, Mass., and Hyannis, died May 4, 2001, at the J.F.K. Medical Center in Lake Worth after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Mildred (Strachota) Mrakava-Blackburn for five years and the former husband of the late Nancy T. (Hillman) Blackburn.
Born in Fairhaven, Mr. Blackburn spent 24 years in the Air Force, serving during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, retiring as a technical sergeant in 1967. He later worked for 10 years as an insurance agent for Boston Mutual Life Insurance Co. in New Bedford.
He earned a degree in humanities from Southern Massachusetts University in 1981. He was a member of the George Tabor Lodge, AF&AM, the York Rite of Masons and the American Legion Post 166 of Fairhaven, and a member and past president of the Czech Club in Lake Worth. An avid singer, he led hymn sings in the park near his home. In Fairhaven, he was a member of the Centre United Methodist Church and the cradle roll of the church, served as a lay minister and was a member of the Square & Compass Club.
He had lived in Fairhaven for more than 30 years before moving to Durand, Mich., eight years ago and spending his winters in Florida. He was previously a Hyannis resident for several years.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, David J. Blackburn of Edgartown and Christopher R. Blackburn of Brookfield, Ill.; a brother, William Hayter of Fairhaven; a sister, Emily Jackson of Milbury; a stepson, Gerald Mrakava of Durand; and a grandson.
A funeral service was held at Centre United Methodist Church in Fairhaven. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

David C. Childs, 84

Yarmouthport - David C. Childs, 84, of Yarmouthport, formerly of Centerville and Upper Montclair, N.J., died May 2, 2001, at Mayflower Place Nursing Center, West Yarmouth, after a long illness.
He was the husband of Janet M. (Rath) Childs.
Mr. Childs was born in New York, N.Y., and raised and educated in Montclair, N.J., and Troy, N.Y. He was a 1939 graduate of Hamilton College and a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Childs was associated with the Bank of New York for 37 years and was appointed pension trust officer. He retired in 1977. He lived in Upper Montclair for many years before moving to Centerville in 1977 and to Yarmouthport in 1992.
He served as bookkeeper for the Cape Cod Hospital Foundation for 13 years.
He was a member of the Federated Church of Hyannis. He also was a member of the VFW Post #02578 in Hyannis and a former member of the West Parish Church Choir of West Barnstable. Mr. Childs also served on the board of directors of the Cape Cod Community Concerts, and as its treasurer; a member of the Opera New England of Cape Cod; the Centerville Historical Society; and the Wequaquet Estates Beach Association.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Childs is survived by a son, Jonathan C. Childs of Manchester, Conn., and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will. be held at 11 a.m. May 12 at the Federated Church of Hyannis, 320 Main St., Hyannis.
Burial will be private.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Cod Hospital Foundation, 4 Bayview St., Hyannis, MA 02601, or to the VNA of Cape Cod, 434 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660.

Richard B. Goldrick, 79

Hyannis - Richard B. Goldrick, 79, a resident of Hyannis, died May 4, 2001, at Milton Hospital after a short illness.
He was the husband of the late Rita (Sheehy) Goldrick.
Born in Taunton, Mr. Goldrick was educated in the Taunton school system and at Bristol County Agricultural High School.
He was a retired lineman for the Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant. He also served as a marine carpenter for Hyannis and Falmouth marinas.
Mr. Goldrick served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
He was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Hyannis. He enjoyed furniture restoring and woodworking.
He is survived by a daughter, Colleen Kinney-Green of Milton; a sister, Veronica McMahon of Taunton; a brother, Edward Goldrick of Taunton; a grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church in Taunton. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery in Taunton.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Remembrance Fund of Milton Hospital, Highland Street, Milton, MA 02186.

William S. Howe Jr., 79

Osterville - William S. Howe Jr., 79, of Osterville, died April 30, 2001.
He was the husband of Patricia (Burns) Howe.
He was born in Boston and raised and educated in Greenfield. He attended the public schools in Greenfield and Deerfield Academy, and was a graduate of Babson College.
He was the former president of the Granite State Mowing Machine Co. in Hinsdale, N.H., and also worked for the Draper Corporation of Hopedale. Mr. Howe most recently worked for the Howe Associates in Osterville, retiring last year.
Mr. Howe was a summer resident of Cape Cod since 1964 and became a permanent resident in 1975.
Mr. Howe was a member of the New England Historical Genealogical Society, the Massachusetts Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Willard Family Association. He was a former member of Rotary International, the Elks Club and St. James Episcopal Church in Greenfield. He was also a former member and director of the Greenfield Country Club, and a former member of the Stone Horse Yacht Club in Harwich Port and the Wianno Club and the Beach Club in Craigville, where he was also former governor and president.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons: William S. Howe III of Osterville, Howard K. Howe of San Diego, Calif., and Richard W. Howe of Mashpee; a daughter, Virginia Thomas; two stepsons: Herbert N. Johnson of Waltham and Philip A. Johnson Jr. of Sandwich; two stepdaughters, Mary S. Mechem of Osterville and Susan S. Formo of Seattle, Wash.; and 12 grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Osterville. Burial was private.
Memorial donations may be made in his name to the American Heart Association, Cape and Islands Regional Office, 2 Whites Path, South Yarmouth, MA 02664; or to the National Kidney Foundation, 180 Rustcraft Road, Dedham, MA 02026.
