Margaret Wood Stookey, 89

Marlborough - Margaret Wood Stookey, 89, formerly of Cotuit, died Oct. 10, 2002, at home after a long illness.
She was the wife of the late Don B. Stookey.
Known as Bonnie, she was born in Beverly, N.J. After graduating from Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Va., she taught Latin at the Moorestown Friends School in Moorestown, N.J., before taking a job with a book publisher in New York City, where she met her husband.
The couple moved to Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., in 1945 where she learned Braille and was active in transcribing books for the blind.
Mrs. Stookey was a founding member of the Hastings Singers and a member of the Fortnightly Society for the Study of Anthropology.
She began summering in Cotuit in 1950 and moved there full time in 1975. She helped design and build two homes there, where she lived until 1996. Into her late 70s, she commuted from the Cape to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where she was a member of the Ladies Committee and a gallery instructor for elementary school students. When that trip became too arduous, she began taking French classes locally. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Osterville.
Survivors include three sons, David W. Stookey of Newport, R.I., Jeffrey W. Stookey of Boston, and Crane W. Stookey of Halifax, Nova Scotia; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Nov. 29 at St. Peter's Church in Osterville.

Peter A. Bell, 49

Cotuit - Peter A. Bell, 49, a resident of Cotuit and formerly of Husum, Wash., died Oct. 22, 2002, at the McCarthy Hospice House in Sandwich.
Survivors include his parents, Merton and Ruth Bell of Cotuit; a daughter, Jennifer Bell of Marlborough, N.H.; and a sister, Merriann Bell of Husum, Wash.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 270 Communication Way, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Gerard C. Henderson II, 80

Cotuit - Gerard C. Henderson II, 80, a resident of Cotuit, died Oct. 24, 2002, at Boston Medical Center.
He was the former husband of Rika Klein. He was also the former husband of Edith Mattison.
Born in Washington , D.C., he grew up in Cambridge and attended the Shady Hill School, the Belmont Hill School, the Dublin School in Dublin, N.H., and graduated from Harvard University in 1943.
He served in the Office of Strategic Services, more commonly known as the OSS, in Europe in World War II as a German translator.
He served most of his professional life as a vice president of Sheraton Hotels and president of Sheraton Inns. He then became a consultant in the hotel business.
During this time, he and his first wife, Edith Mattison, raised five children in Lincoln.
He retired to Cotuit, where his parents and grandparents had roots. He married Rika Klein.
On the Cape, he was active in many volunteer organizations, including Literacy Volunteers, the Samaritans, the Cotuit Library Association and the Association of the Cotuit Mosquito Yacht Club. He loved sports and was an avid golfer, tennis player and Cotuit skiff racer.
Survivors include two daughters, Joan "Jodie" Sanders of Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia, and Mary T. Henderson of Wales, Maine; three sons, Gerard "Terry" Henderson of Baddeck, Nova Scotia, George "Bunker" Henderson of Hyde Park, and Dake G. Henderson of Hanover; a sister, Mary "Polly" Horn of Holnesdale, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A memorial service was held at the Cotuit Federated Church.
Memorial donations may be made to the Dublin School, P.O. Box 522, Dublin, NH 03444; or the Association of the Cotuit Mosquito Yacht Club, P.O. Box 1605, Cotuit, MA 02635.

Robert W. Johnson, 37

Halifax - Robert W. Johnson, 37, formerly of Hyannis, died Oct. 22, 2002, at his home in Halifax after a two-year illness.
He was the husband of Laurie (Doherty) Johnson.
Born in Brockton, he was raised in Halifax and then moved to the Cape, where he graduated from Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School in 1982. He lived most of his adult life in Hyannis before moving back to Halifax one year ago.
A self-employed builder and handyman, he enjoyed building, loved dogs, and was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed boating and fishing.
Survivors include his father, Forrest Johnson of South Dennis; his grandmothers, Mary Cianfarani of Halifax and Beatrice Kennedy of Quincy; two stepsons, Norman and Joseph Piotte of Halifax; his stepmother, Antoinette Johnson of South Dennis; two brothers, Darren Johnson of Harwich and Shawn Johnson of South Dennis; two sisters, Raylene Studley and Dianna Studley, both of South Dennis; a niece; two nephews; aunts, uncles and cousins.
A funeral service was held at Shepherd Funeral Home in Pembroke, with burial in Central Cemetery in Halifax.

Beverly K. Ludwig, 63

Barnstable - Beverly K. (Korteweg) Ludwig, 63, a resident of Barnstable, died unexpectedly Oct. 18, 2002, in Barnstable.
She was the wife of Roger W. Ludwig for 42 years.
Born in Paterson, N.J., she was a member of the first graduating class of Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes, N.J. She also attended William Paterson College.
Mrs. Ludwig lived in Wyckoff, N.J., and Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., before moving to Barnstable in 1998. She served in New Jersey on the Northwest Board of Realtors and was a real estate agent for Schlott Real Estate.
She served on the board of trustees at the Cape Museum of Fine Arts and the board of directors at Paterson Memorial Day Nursery. She was an avid gardener and a gifted interior designer, loved antiques and the arts, and was devoted to her children.
Besides her husband, survivors include three sons, Roger W. Ludwig Jr. of Black Rock, Conn., Anthony C. Ludwig of Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., and Clinton J. Ludwig of West Barnstable; a daughter, Kate N. Ludwig of Bozeman, Mont.; a sister, Barbara Spohn of Stonington, Conn.; three grandchildren; four nieces; and two nephews.
Private services were held Oct. 19.

James A. Lynch, 76

Cotuit - James A. Lynch, 76, a resident of Cotuit and formerly of Worcester, died Oct. 21, 2002, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
He was the husband of Carol (Mathews) Lynch of Cotuit for 49 years.
Born in Worcester, he graduated from Commerce High School. He served active duty in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific theater aboard the USS Samuel N. Moore.
Mr. Lynch was a salesman for the Waites Co. in Worcester, retiring in 1992. He had owned a home in Cotuit since 1983 and moved there permanently in 1992.
During 10 years of retirement, he remained active with his children and grandchildren and served as a volunteer at Christ the King Parish.
His passions were his family, his church community and Cape Cod.
Besides his wife, survivors include three sons, Stephen A. Lynch of Holden, John F. Lynch of Saugus and James R. Lynch of Hamden, Conn.; a daughter, Ann E. Power of Westboro; a brother, Thomas J. Lynch of Worcester; a sister, Mary T. Goodell of Holden; and nine grandchildren.
He was also the father of Thomas J. Lynch, who died in 1968.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Christ the King Parish in Mashpee.

Charles A. Stochl, 67

Hyannis - Charles A. Stochl, 67, a resident of Hyannis, died Oct. 10, 2002, at his home after a three-year illness with cancer.
He was the husband of Joanne P. Stochl of Hyannis and of the late Joyce M. (Ousterman) Stochl.
Born in Long Branch, N.J., he grew up in Eatontown, N.J., where he worked on the family farm, tending animals and planting crops. He enjoyed horseback riding and entered his horse Tiny in barrel race competitions, winning many awards. He also worked for his family's excavating and landscaping business. As a teen, he attended Eatontown Presbyterian Church and was active in its youth group.
He graduated from Long Branch High School in 1952, where he was a member of the tennis team. He received a degree in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., in 1956. He later did graduate work at the University of Rhode Island.
From 1956 to 1968, he was a mechanical engineer at Martin Aircraft in Baltimore and also at Army Signal Corps Labs, Fort Monmouth in Eatontown, N.J. He spent time in Vietnam repairing and updating air research cryogenic refrigeration prototypes used in the Army's OV-1C Mohawk aircraft.
In 1968, he relocated to Cumberland, R.I. Over the years, he worked as a senior development engineer at Garrett Air Research in El Segundo, Calif., designing cryogenic refrigeration prototype units for the Century program. He was also a project engineering and quality assurance manager at U.S. Phillips Corp., Cryogenic Division of Air Research in Ashton, R.I., and was senior engineering program/product manager and director of quality assurance at CTI-Cryogenics Division, Helix Technology Inc. in Mansfield. After retiring in 1994, he moved to Cape Cod.
He was a member of the American Society for Quality Control and of Arnold Mills United Methodist Church in Cumberland, R.I.
A sports enthusiast, he loved golf, traveling, boating and fishing. He belonged to the Sportsman Club in Long Branch, N.J., where he was named "Sportsman of the Year" several times for catching the largest fish. He also enjoyed surf fishing from many jetties from Sandy Hook to Asbury Park during pre-dawn hours. He was a boat race course surveyor for the Guy Lombardo Regatta on the Shrewsbury River.
Besides his wife, survivors include a son, Mark Stochl of North Attleboro; four daughters, Patricia Montague of Amherst, N.H., Karyn Stochl of Warwick, R.I., Susan Seber of Pittsford, N.Y., and Nancy Ellis of Hamilton; two stepchildren, Jonathan Grant and Laura Grant-Rousch; two sisters, Ann Wolf of Worcester, Pa., and Carla Means of Lewisville, Texas ; seven grandchildren; two nieces; and two nephews.
A memorial service was held at the Federated Church of Hyannis.

Gloria M. Urenas, 75

Centerville - Gloria M. (Hall) Urenas, 75, a resident of Centerville and formerly of Brockton and West Barnstable, died unexpectedly Oct. 21, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
She was the wife of Alfred "Al" F. Urenas, who died in October 2001.
Mrs. Urenas was a well-known employee of both the city of Brockton and the town of Barnstable. She was elected chairwoman of the Brockton License Commission in 1976 through 1981, when she was appointed to the assessors office. After resigning in December 1983, she retired to Barnstable, where she immediately became active in politics and town business.
She recently celebrated 10 years as the zoning enforcement officer with the Barnstable Building Department.
Survivors include two daughters, Maribeth Desley of Centerville and Maureen Jones of Barnstable; a stepson, Robert Urenas of Mashpee; and five grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville, with burial in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
Memorial donations may be made to the Town of Barnstable, "Walkway to the Sea," 367 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601.
