Nancy Roche, 77

Osterville -- Nancy (Coffin) Roche, 77, of Osterville, died last month at Falmouth Hospital after a brief illness.
She was the wife of Frederick W. Roche, who died in 1971.
Mrs. Roche was born in Indianapolis and grew up in Richmond, Ind. She graduated from Richmond High School and attended the University of Miami in Ohio, moving to the Boston area in 1947 and marrying the next year. She lived in Belmont for many years and summered in Osterville, moving there permanently in 1971.
Mrs. Roche was a volunteer at Cape Cod Hospital for many years and was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church of Osterville. She loved music and played the piano.
Surviving are three sons, Frederick C. Roche of Manila, Philippines, Thomas N. Roche of Haverhill and David W. Roche of Hingham; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Edson F. Scudder, 81

Cotuit - Edson Fisher Scudder, 81, a resident of Cotuit, died Dec. 25, 2002, after a sudden illness.
He was the husband of Priscilla (Warren) Scudder for 45 years.
Mr. Scudder was a 1938 graduate of Barnstable High School and received one of only four New England scholarships at that time to Boston University. He graduated with a degree in journalism in 1942. During World War II, he was inducted into the Army and served as an enlisted man and as a WOJG in the headquarters of the Seventh Air Force at Saipan and later in Okinawa.
After the war, he took graduate classes in American history and literature at Colgate University. He then taught for a year at Upsala College in New Jersey, after which he earned a master's degree in history from Northwestern University in 1950.
For four decades, he taught American history at a number of private schools in New York. He served as chairman of the history department at the McBurney School in New York City from 1953 to 1981. He coached varsity baseball and basketball and was especially active in the Association of Teachers in Independent Schools in New York City and vicinity. He and his family spent most summers in Cotuit until he and his wife retired permanently to her family home in the town.
Mr. Scudder was an active member of the Osterville Men's Club and the organization's first historian. He was also a member of the OMC Golf Committee and a member of the Cotuit Federated Church.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Edson Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Eleanor Scudder of Newton and Emily Scudder of Cambridge; and four grandchildren.

Jon O. Syrjala, 52

Hyannis - Jon O. Syrjala, 52, a resident of Hyannis, died unexpectedly Dec. 22, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
Mr. Syrjala was born in Hyannis and raised in Barnstable and Yarmouthport. He also lived in Hyannis for five years, in Dennis for 15 years and in Arizona for five years.
He worked as a truck driver for more than 30 years, driving 18-wheelers for various companies.
He enjoyed camping, motorcycles, reading and history.
Surviving are three sons, John O. Syrjala Jr. and Donald R. Syrjala, both of South Carolina, and Shane L. Syrjala of Harwich; two daughters, Tori L. Syrjala of Marstons Mills and Kasie C. Syrjala of Dennis; eight grandchildren; and his fiancée, Betty Bickford of Hyannis.
Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 100 North St., Hyannis, MA 02601; or to the NOAH shelter, 77 Winter St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Harry J. 'Jerry' Taylor, 43

Hyannis - Harry J. "Jerry" Taylor, 43, a resident of Hyannis, died Dec. 27, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital from injuries received in a construction accident.
He was the husband of Virginia "Ginny" (McKenzie) Taylor.
Mr. Taylor was born in Somers Point, N.J., and was raised and educated in Egg Harbor Township, N.J., where he graduated from Absegami High School. He moved to Oceanside, Calif., in 1991 and lived there for 11 years until relocating to Cape Cod a year ago. He was employed as a carpenter.
He loved fishing, running his dogs and the Giants football team.
Surviving besides his wife are his mother, Ruth (Hartman) Taylor of Hyannis; three daughters, Nicole Taylor of Cape Coral, Fla., Jessica Taylor of Egg Harbor City, N.J., and Ashlea Taylor of Ocean City, N.J.; a brother, R. Michael Taylor of English Creek, N.J.; three sisters, Janice Kyler of Collins Lakes, N.J., Teresa Taylor of English Creek and Karen Merlock of Laurel Dale, N.J.; five grandchildren; eleven nieces and seven nephews.
A memorial service was held at the Boakes Funeral Home in Mays Landing, N.J. A memorial service will be held on Cape Cod at a later date.

Eleanor 'Sally' Tingley, 98

Centerville - Eleanor "Sally" (Nazro) Tingley, 98, a resident of Centerville, died Dec. 24. 2002. at Jewish Memorial Hospital in Boston after a long illness.
She was the wife of Leslie Tingley, who died in 1997.
Mrs. Tingley was born, raised and educated in Winthrop, graduating from Winthrop High School. She also graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1927 and from Simmons College in 1928.
She worked at Dartmouth College from 1929 to 1931 and at Beacon Mortgage Co. in Brookline from 1931 until retiring in 1959.
Upon her marriage in 1965, she and her husband moved to West Yarmouth. In her later years, she lived at Cape Regency Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Centerville.
She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable for many years and was a former member of the Republican Club of the Lower Cape and the American Association of University Women. She volunteered at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
Surviving are two nephews, Peter Butler of Boston and Winthrop Nazro; three great-nieces; a great-nephew; and several great-great-nephews.
A memorial prayer service for Mr. and Mrs. Tingley was held at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis. Burial followed in Ancient Cemetery in Yarmouthport.

Mary E. Winn, 93

South Yarmouth -- Mary (O'Keefe) E. Winn, 93, a resident of South Yarmouth, died Dec. 16, 2002, at Mary McCarthy House in East Sandwich.
She was the wife of Keith Winn, who died in 1988.
Mrs. Winn was born in Boston but lived most of her adult life in New Hampshire with her husband. She worked as an office clerk until her retirement, when she and her husband wintered in Florida or Hawaii.
Upon her husband's death, Mrs. Winn lived in the Osterville-Centerville area for a few years before moving to Thirwood Place in South Yarmouth.
Surviving are two brothers, Arthur O'Keefe of Centerville and Edward O'Keefe of California; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville, with burial following in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 270 Communication Way, Hyannis MA 02601.

Polly Beale Baker, 93

Millis - Polly (Beale) Baker, 93, a resident of Millis who summered on Cape Cod for many years, died Dec. 7, 2002.
She was the wife of Talbot Baker, who died in 1967.
Mrs. Baker was born in Barnstable, grew up on Beacon Hill in Boston and attended Winsor School in Boston.
She moved to Millis in 1939, where for many years her family had a small working farm.
Mrs. Baker was an officer and instructor in the Women's Army Defense Corps during World War II.
She was on the original steering committee of the Charles River Watershed Association and volunteered with many organizations, including the MSPCC, MSPCA and the Winsor School.
She was a member of the Vincent, Chilton and Harvard clubs as well as the Colonial Dames.
She was a member of the Dover Church.
Mrs. Baker had a lifelong love of sailing and grew up spending summers near Barnstable Harbor and later on Wings Neck in Pocasset.
She was an enthusiastic participant, with her husband, in the Cruising Club of America and an active member of the Buzzards, Beverly and Ocean cruising clubs. She day-sailed and raced extensively on Buzzards Bay, often bringing back trophies, and also enjoyed the cruising mode.
She enjoyed sailing on the New England coast on the family sailboat, and even made several cruises in Europe. She made a trans-Atlantic crossing with her son Toby on his 40-foot ketch when she was 76 years old.
Survivors include three sons, Nicholas Jordan Baker of Weston, Talbot "Toby" Baker Jr. of Pocasset and Benjamin Beale Baker of South Dartmouth; a daughter, Hope Lincoln Baker of Boston; a brother, Benjamin Beale of Westwood; five grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
Burial was in Lothrop Hill Cemetery in Barnstable.
A celebration of her life will be held May 7 at her home in Millis.
Memorial donations may be made to the Winsor School, Pilgrim Road, Boston, MA 02215; the Society of Colonial Dames, 55 Beacon St., Boston, MA 02108; or to the charity of one's choice.

Barbara J. Bearse, 85

Centerville - Barbara J. Bearse, 85, of Centerville died Jan. 7, 2003, at EPOCH Senior Health Care in Brewster after a long illness.
Ms. Bearse attended Barnstable High School and Bryant and Stratton Business School in Boston. She was employed in the Boston area for many years as a bookkeeper and clerical worker.
She was a stamp collector and genealogist and she loved cats.
Surviving are a brother, Laurence W. Bearse of Centerville; a niece; a nephew; two great-nieces; and a great-nephew.
Memorial donations may be made to Cape Cod Human Services, 460 West Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Manuel B. Couto, 92

Marstons Mills - Manuel B. Couto, 92, a longtime resident of Marstons Mills, died Dec. 31, 2002, at the Cape Regency Nursing Home in Centerville after a long illness.
He was the husband of the late Ermelinda (Aguiar) Couto.
Mr. Couto was born in Fall River and moved to Falmouth at an early age, attending Falmouth schools. He moved to Marstons Mills in 1933.
He worked at Clear Lake Duck Farm for many years, and also worked as a salesman for Treasure Island, an antiques business. He retired in the 1980s.
Surviving are three daughters, Gillie Couto and Barbara Tavares, both of Marstons Mills, and Katherine Evans of Centerville; two sisters, Beatrice Medeiros of East Falmouth and Julia Lentz of Florida; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, with burial in Mosswood Cemetery.
