Edson F. Scudder, 81

Cotuit - Edson Fisher Scudder, 81, a resident of Cotuit, died Jan. 1, 2003, after a sudden illness.
He was the husband of Priscilla (Warren) Scudder for 45 years.
Mr. Scudder was a 1938 graduate of Barnstable High School and received one of only four New England scholarships at that time to Boston University. He graduated with a degree in journalism in 1942. During World War II, he was inducted into the Army and served as an enlisted man and as a WOJG in the headquarters of the Seventh Air Force at Saipan and later in Okinawa.
After the war, he took graduate classes in American history and literature at Colgate University. He then taught for a year at Upsala College in New Jersey, after which he earned a master's degree in history from Northwestern University in 1950.
For four decades, he taught American history at a number of private schools in New York. He served as chairman of the history department at the McBurney School in New York City from 1953 to 1981. He coached varsity baseball and basketball and was especially active in the Association of Teachers in Independent Schools in New York City and vicinity. He and his family spent most summers in Cotuit until he and his wife retired permanently to her family home in the town.
Mr. Scudder was an active member of the Osterville Men's Club and the organization's first historian. He was also a member of the OMC Golf Committee and a member of the Cotuit Federated Church.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Edson Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Eleanor Scudder of Newton and Emily Scudder of Cambridge; and four grandchildren.

Betty L. Tuepker, 78

Sanford, Fla. - Betty L. Tuepker, 78, a former resident of Hyannis, died Jan. 5, 2003, at Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford.
Ms. Tuepker was born in Salisbury, Md., and was a homemaker. She moved to central Florida in 1974 after living in Hyannis.
She was a member of L.A.F.R.A. Unit 174, DAVA Unit 30, the National Order Alley Cats 512 and the Fleet Reserve Auxiliary.
Surviving are four sons, Charles Nutter of Salisbury, Md., John Tuepker of Mendon, Vt., James Tuepker of Centerville and Michael Tuepker of Marstons Mills; a sister, Thea Moulton of Sanford; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Eleanor F. Archambeault, 82

Centerville - Eleanor F. Archambeault, 82, of Centerville and Las Vegas, died Dec. 20, 2002.
She was the wife of the late Lionel "Archie" Archambeault.
Mrs. Archambeault was a graduate of Falmouth High School and a lifelong resident of the Cape. With her husband, she was co-owner of Arch Construction Co.
She is survived by three sons, Wayne Archambeault of Hyannis, Richard Archambeault and Gary Archambeault of California; three daughters, Judith Foote, Mary Adams and Shelly Bohne of Las Vegas; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Donna I. Dacey, 54

Centerville - Donna I. (Duffy) Dacey, 54, of Centerville died Jan. 15, 2003, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
Born in Norwalk, Conn., she attended Central Connecticut State College, plus various programs at Fairfield University, University of Bridgeport and Cape Cod Community College.
She worked as a clerk for the town of Barnstable in the assessors office and for the recreation division. She was a field inspector for several years for the assessing division.
She was very active in volunteer work with the Barnstable Silver Bullets, Barnstable youth hockey, lacrosse, Little League, Babe Ruth and various school and reading programs. She was also a member of the Barnstable Quarterback Club, where she served as secretary for three years. She was an artist and avid reader.
Surviving are two sons, Patrick M. Dacey and Matthew M. Dacey, both of Centerville; a daughter, Diane Pontious of Uncasville, Conn.; her mother, Sylvia (Adamson) Duffy of Norwalk, Conn.; and her grandmother, Edla Adamson of Wilton, Conn.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville.

Mae Killian Eckler, 75

Marstons Mills - Mae Killian Eckler, 75, of Marstons Mills died Jan. 14, 2003, at her home.
She was the wife of the late Charles W. Eckler.
Mrs. Eckler and her husband retired to Cape Cod from Wayland in 1993. She had spent her summers on the Cape from 1967 to 1993.
She was an active member of the Bayberry Quilters Guild of Cape Cod and enjoyed gardening, reading and spending time at the beach.
Surviving are two sons, Geoffrey W. Eckler of Woodstock, Vt., and Bradley A. Eckler of Concord; a daughter, Deborah R. Eckler of Somersworth, N.H.; a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Richard of Dennis; and four grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 270 Communication Way, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Ethel Howard, 87

Norton - Ethel (Bornstein) Howard, 87, a former longtime resident of Centerville, died Jan. 13, 2003, at Sturdy Memorial Hospital.
She was the wife of the late Melvin Howard.
Mrs. Howard was born in Boston and was a graduate of Brookline High School. She lived in Centerville for more than 45 years before moving to Norton just nine months ago.
She worked as a photographic assistant for the Howard Studios of Hyannis for more than 25 years.
She enjoyed spending time with her family as well as gardening and traveling.
She is survived by two sons, Richard Howard of Cotuit and Andrew Howard of North Attleboro; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

David S. Macedo, 51

West Yarmouth - David S. Macedo, 51, of West Yarmouth, died Jan. 12, 2003, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a long illness.
He was the former husband of Lynne (Brunnell) Macedo.
Mr. Macedo was born in Fall River. He moved to Cape Cod 37 years ago, graduating from Barnstable High School in 1970. He was employed as a mechanic and worked for many years with Beard Chevrolet, Hyannis Brake & Auto Repair and the former North Street Texaco.
Mr. Macedo loved gardening and working on automobiles, and was known for his love of caring for stray animals.
Surviving besides his former wife are two sons, David Paul Macedo and Stephen Charles Macedo, both of Hyannis; a brother, Donald S. Macedo of Hyannis; a sister, Veronica S. Menezes of Riverside, R.I.; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.

Eleanor Magnuson, 85

Barnstable - Eleanor (Rowe) Magnuson, 85, of Barnstable and formerly of Reading and Melrose, died Jan. 16, 2003, at Wingate Nursing Home in Reading.
She was the wife of John Franklin Magnuson for 49 years.
Mrs. Magnuson was born in Melrose and was a graduate of Wheelock College. She taught elementary school for several years before retiring to raise her family.
A lifelong Episcopalian, she was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, participating in sewing groups, singing and playing the piano, listening to beautiful music and working in the garden.
She also had a love for animals and reading, and she enjoyed sending and receiving greeting cards. She was an active member for more than 50 years in the PEO Sisterhood (a philanthropic educational organization for women).
A funeral was held in Trinity Church in Melrose. Burial was in Wood End Cemetery in Reading.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140.

Paul Crosby Murray, 86

Hyannis ­ Paul Crosby Murray, 86, of Hyannis, a retired health agent for the Town of Barnstable, died Jan. 16, 2003, at Cape Cod Hospital.
He was married for 55 years to Toini Tuulikki (Hemmila) Murray.
A graduate of Barnstable High School, Mr. Murray completed a journeyman's plumbers class at New Bedford Vocational Evening School. During World War II, he served in Antigua and Europe and was in the second wave of the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge as well.
In 1948, he achieved the status of master plumber (and heating) and had his own business. He was president of the Cape Cod Master Plumbers Association in 1955.
Mr. Murray went to work for the Town of Barnstable as a health agent in 1966, retiring in 1981. He served as president of the Municipal Employees Association.
An avid fisherman, hunter and sailor, he enjoyed traveling, wood carving, gardening, reading and smooth dancing.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughters Susan Payne of Holden, Maine and Betsy Marchena of Costa Rica; a granddaughter; and three nephews.
A funeral service was held at Doane, Beale & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis, with burial following in Oak Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to the Hyannis Public Library, 401 Main St., Hyannis MA 02601.
