Mary Lorraine Gibbons, 81

Fairhaven - Mary Lorraine Gibbons, 81, a former West Barnstable resident, died Feb. 12, 2003, at Our Lady's Haven Nursing Facility in Fairhaven.
She was the wife of the late Frederick X. Gibbons.
Mrs. Gibbons was born in Cambridge and raised and educated in the Boston area. She owned and operated Mercury Office Products with her husband in Newton Corner for 25 years. She had lived in Wayland, wintered in Stuart, Fla., for many years, and retired to West Barnstable in the 1980s.
She enjoyed golf in her retirement years.
Surviving are a daughter, Marlene Gibbons-Wilkey of Mattapoisett; a son, Frederick X. Gibbons of Ames, Iowa; a brother, John Walsh of Milton; a sister, Joan Gelinas of Stanley, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of Hope Chapel in West Barnstable, with burial in Crocker Park Cemetery there.
Memorial donations may be made to Muscular Dystrophy Association, Inc., 10 Riverside Drive, Lakeville, MA 02347.

Raymond F. Higgins, 73

Cotuit - Raymond F. Higgins, 73, of Cotuit died unexpectedly Feb. 9, 2003, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
He was the husband of Mary E. (Donahue) Higgins.
Mr. Higgins was born in Seekonk, educated in Providence, R.I., and graduated from La Salle Academy. He began a successful career in the insurance industry, starting in Providence and continuing at the Syracuse, N.Y., branch of Fidelity & Casualty Co. He followed with branch manager assignments in Wethersfield, Conn., and Boston with Crum & Forster Insurance Co. In 1985, he retired from the Crum & Forster home office and moved to Cape Cod.
In 1985, he became vice president of Mahoney & Wright Insurance Agency in South Yarmouth and then retired to a part-time basis with Cape Cod Surplus Insurance Agency in Mashpee and Donald McCarthy Insurance Agency in Falmouth.
An aviation and sailing enthusiast, he soloed over the Delaware Water Gap in his Piper Cub plane. He enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren and spent much time with them in youth hockey, baseball and football.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Raymond F. Higgins Jr. of West Hartford, Conn.; two daughters, Sheila Ann Higgins of Cary, N.C., and Leslie Marie Higgins of West Haven, Conn.; three brothers, James Higgins of Scituate, R.I., John Higgins of Chepachet, R.I., and Henry Higgins of Warwick, R.I.; three sisters, Ruth Clarke of Pawtucket, R.I., Anne Hanewich of Bradenton, Fla., and Dorothy Gabel of Greenville, R.I.; and three grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Osterville. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.

The Rev. Richard W. Manns

Barnstable - The Rev. Richard W. Manns, 78, of Barnstable died Feb. 11, 2003, in Hyannis.
He was the husband of Donna (DiPietro) Manns.
The Rev. Manns was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and graduated in 1947 from Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis. From 1947 to 1951, he was the minister for Grace Lutheran Church in Queens Village, N.Y., and from there moved to Dedham, where he was the minister at St. Luke's Lutheran Church until 1972. He then moved to Meriden, Conn., serving as minister at St. John Lutheran Church until 1994, and since 1996, he was the minister at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Mashpee. He served 55 years of ministry in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
He was a member of Kiwanis and Cape Cod Post-Polio Support Group and was a volunteer chaplain at Eagle Pond Rehabilitation and Living Center.
Surviving are two sons, Timothy R. of Mt. Vernon, Wash., and Andrew M. of Peterborough, N.H.; two daughters, Ruth E. Schubkegel of Kansas City, Mo., and Elizabeth E. Martin of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; seven grandchildren; seven nieces; and three nephews.
A memorial service was held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Dedham. Burial will be at a later date in the Gethsemane Cemetery in Meriden.

Margaret 'Jane' Megathlin, 75

South Dennis - Margaret "Jane" (Parot) Megathlin, 75, of South Dennis and formerly of Centerville, died Jan. 30, 2003, at the Avery Manor Nursing Facility in Needham, where she had resided during the past year due to failing health.
She was the wife of the late Charles Walton Megathlin, Jr.
Mrs. Megathlin was born and raised in Burlington, Vt., and moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., before settling on the Cape in the early 1960s. She worked at various Cape businesses and eventually retired from Filene's Department Store at the Cape Cod Mall in the mid-1980s.
She was an avid bowler and enjoyed league play at the Cape Bowl. She also enjoyed bingo at the local churches and card games of all types with friends. She was a member of Our Lady of the Cape Church in Brewster and a former member of Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville.
Surviving are three sons, Robert and Richard Egan, both of Tennessee, and Donald Egan of Pennsylvania ; a sister, Idra Lamb of California; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery in Hyannis.

Lillian Mello, 87

Marstons Mills - Lillian Mello, 87, of Marstons Mills died Feb. 11, 2003, at Barnstable Hospice House.
She was the wife of the late Joseph Mello for 68 years.
Mrs. Mello was born and raised in New Bedford. She and her husband moved to Cape Cod in 1990. She enjoyed spending time with her family and working in the yard.
Surviving are two sons, Bruce Mello of Indiana and Leonard Mello of New Bedford; two daughters, Sylvia Fregeau of Marstons Mills and Nancy Travers of Fairhaven; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 270 Communication Way, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Helen M. Nissley, 81

Hyannis - Helen M. Nissley, 81, of Hyannis died Feb. 12, 2003, at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness.
She was the wife of Marcus Nissley, who died in 1995. They were married for 42 years.
Mrs. Nissley was born in New York City and moved to West Yarmouth as a child.
She was a 1939 graduate of Yarmouth High School and a 1942 graduate of Eastern Bible School in Greenlane, Pa. She remained at Eastern Bible School for one year after graduation to serve as assistant dean of women.
With her husband, Mrs. Nissley owned and operated Sea View Guest House in Hyannis for many years until 1984. She then was the primary caregiver for her parents for several years.
She was an active member of Faith Assemblies of God Church in Hyannis. In her youth and as a youth adult she played the violin and she also enjoyed sewing and making clothing.
She is survived by two daughters, Esther M. Chamberlin of Warrensburg, N.Y., and Ruth M. Nissley of San Diego; and three grandchildren.
A funeral was held at Faith Assemblies of God Church in Hyannis, with burial in Oak Neck Cemetery there.

James A. Peros Sr., 81

West Yarmouth - James A. Peros Sr., 81, of West Yarmouth died Feb. 10, 2003, at his home.
He was the husband of the late Mary Kathryn (McIntee) Peros.
Mr. Peros was born, raised and educated in Lawrence, graduating from Lawrence High School in 1939. He opened Health Candies in Lawrence until enlisting in the Navy as an air traffic controller during World War II. After being discharged in 1946 he worked at the family business, Yankee Doodle Restaurant in Lawrence.
In 1973, he moved to Yarmouth and became co-owner of Olde Yarmouth Inn in Yarmouthport until 1990. In 1972, he became the sole owner of E.E.C. Swift Co. Liquor and Grocery Store in Osterville. In 1976, he became president of the Barnstable County Deputy Sheriff's Association.
Mr. Peros co-founded the Sheriff's Youth Ranch, was a Cape Cod Hospital corporator for 25 years, and was a member of the Elks, Masons, Shriners, Kiwanis, Rotary, 100 Club of Massachusetts, Massachusetts Police Chiefs Association and Massachusetts State Police Association. He wrote the song "Navy Wings of Gold."
He is survived by two sons, Shane E. Peros of Yarmouthport and James A. Peros Jr. of Falmouth; a daughter, Kathleen A. Lacasse of West Yarmouth; and six grandchildren. He was also the father of the late John Peros.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Pius X Church in South Yarmouth. Burial was in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 270 Communication Way, Hyannis, MA 02601; or Camp Good News, Main Street, Forestdale, MA 02644.

Christine May Preston, 96

Osterville - Christine May (Hamilton) Preston, 96, of Osterville and formerly of Westborough, died Feb. 8, 2003, at EPOCH Senior Healthcare in Brewster.
She was the wife of the late Sidney W. Preston.
Mrs. Preston was born in Boston and was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable, along with various women's groups.
She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth P. White of Osterville and Janet P. Frisch of Wallingford, Pa.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service was held in St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable.

Martha J. Shirley, 49

Hyannis - Martha J. Shirley, 49, of Hyannis died Feb. 9, 2003, at her home.
Born in Lancaster, Pa., Ms. Shirley graduated from Penn Manor High School in 1971 and from Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing in 1974.
She lived in Millersville, Pa., until 1971 when she moved to Boston. She moved to Worcester in 1974 and later to the Cape, settling in Hyannis in 2001.
Ms. Shirley was employed as a registered nurse for 29 years. She worked at the former Worcester City Hospital and U-Mass Medical Center. She also was a case manager for Burbank Spaulding Rehab Center and for RHCI in Sandwich.
She was a member of the Brockton Ski Club and the Wachusett Mountain Ranger/Ski Patrol. She enjoyed painting and skiing.
She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Almonte of Boston; a son, Michael Almonte of Holden; her parents, Marilyn A. (Husson) and Charles H. Shirley of Millersville, Pa.; two brothers, Michael Shirley of Lancaster, Pa., and Richard Shirley of Millersville, Pa., and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Saint Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis with burial in Marstons Mills Cemetery.
