Dale Earnhardt
1951 - 2001
Dale Earnhardt died Sunday February 18, 2001 while racing in the Daytona 500. A crash occurred on the final lap of the event and according to attending physicians; Dale never regained consciousness after the impact.
7-time Winston Cup Champion Dale Earnhardt was the greatest racecar driver of all time. Along with his 7 championships, Dale was the Rookie of the Year in 1979, NMPA Driver of the Year 5 times, and IROC Champion 3 times. With 76 victories including his 1998 Daytona 500 victory, 428 top 10 race finishes, 22 poles and top ten finishes in Winston Cup Points for 20 of his 22 seasons, Dale was not only the greatest stock car driver of all time, he was the heart and soul of the sport.
Dale was born April 29, 1951 in Kannapolis, N.C., the son of Martha and NASCAR driver Ralph Earnhardt. Ralph won the NASCAR Sportsman Championship in 1956 and made 51 Winston Cup starts. Ralph Earnhardt died in 1973, two years before his son joined the Winston Cup circuit. Dale is survived by his loving wife Teresa, daughters Kelley King and Taylor Nicole, and sons Kerry and Dale Jr.. Known as "Ironhead", "Intimidator", and "The Man in Black", Dale will also be remembered as "Husband", "Father", and "Friend".
In Dale Beaver's eulogy from Thursday's memorial service for Dale Earnhardt at the Calvary Church in Charlotte, N.C, he stated, "I want to encourage you to do three things in the coming days. To tell those stories, and everybody's got a Dale Earnhardt story sitting in here, and to laugh, and to remember the emotion that goes with those stories. To listen to each other as you tell those stories and to pray. And to pray. Pray alone and with each other. I think Dale would be happy that we would be laughing and telling stories with each other." Dale Beaver is a chaplain with Motor Racing Outreach.
After his 20-year struggle to win the Daytona 500 ended in 1998, we all breathed a sigh of relief since we had all struggled with him. The memory I think of most when I think about Dale is seeing the pit crews, drivers, media, and fans line up on pit road as he drove along high fiving everyone! The accomplishments and memories Dale leaves behind are too numerous to list, but hopefully his devoted fans will try. I encourage you to sign the guest book to list your memories, offer condolences to the Earnhardt family, and allow your fellow fans to read this tribute to Dale. Thanks for the memories Dale, you will forever be in my prayers, in my thoughts, and I can’t put into words how I will miss you. I say goodbye to my hero.
