Myrtle E. (Hyndman) Bendell aged 91 years of Brockton died October 30, 2003. She was the wife of the late Eldon B. Bendell, Sr.
Born in Maynard, MA she was the daughter of the late George C. and Ada E. (Smith) Hyndman.
Myrtle had lived in Brockton since 1915 and was a 1929 graduate of Brockton High School. She was a member of the Olivet Memorial Church in Brockton, Secretary and Treasurer of the Awana Girls Group of the Church, former choir member, member of the Women’s Missionary Prayer Fellowship, member of the Christian Women’s Club day division, member and former treasurer of Brockton Women’s Club and a member of the Goddard Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by a son Eldon B. Bendell, Jr. and his wife Maggie of Emporia, VA; a daughter June E. Hewitt and her husband Robert of Brockton; 4 grandchildren Martha Stephens, Lorelei Bendell, Jeffrey Hewitt and Barbara MacIntosh; 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was also the sister of the late Ruby Tibbetts and Hazel Rice and the grandmother to the late Michael Bendell and Terri Lynn Bendell.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 3, 2003 at 11:00 AM in the Olivet Memorial Church in Brockton. Interment will follow in Melrose Cemetery.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, November 2, 2003 from 2-5 PM.

Dorothy M. (Cates) Barker

Dorothy M. (Cates) Barker age 84 years passed away Monday after a period of failing health. She was the wife of the late Richard A. Barker.
Born in Brockton she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Charlotte (Pette) Cates. Dorothy was born and raised in Brockton and was a graduate of Brockton High School and the former Williams Business School in Brockton. She eventually moved to Avon and was a resident there for the past 40 years, eventually retiring and splitting time between Bonita Springs, Florida.
She worked as a secretary to the Superintendent of the Avon public schools and also to the President of Stonehill College. Dorothy also was very active at the Wendell Ave. Congregational Church, and was a member of the Brockton Chapter Order of the Eastern Star for over 60 years. She enjoyed crafts and especially enjoyed traveling.
She is survived by her 2 sons, Robert A. Barker of Avon and Paul C. Barker also of Avon. She was also the grandmother of 2. Dorothy is also survived by a sister, Ruth Snow of East Bridgewater. As well as several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at 9:00 am in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 647 Main St. Brockton, MA. Interment will follow in Avon Cemetery, Avon, MA.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, November 18, 2003 from 4-7 PM.

Jason W. “Jay” Shurtleff

Jason W. “Jay” Shurtleff aged 84 years of West Bridgewater, MA died Friday, October 10, 2003 at Life Care Center of West Bridgewater after a short illness. He was the husband of Marjorie Louise (Kolb) Shurtleff of 59 years.
Born Wednesday, April 9, 1919 in Brockton, MA he was the son of the late George A. Shurtleff and the late Laura (McLain) Shurtleff.
He was a 1938 graduate of Brockton high school and was a graduate of Williams Business College. He worked for Campello Co-Operative Bank where he was past president and CEO. He was also a former director of Co-Operative Central Bank, of Co-Operative Bank League and of Co-Operative Bank Retirement Association. He was a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Brockton, a Paul Harris Fellow, treasurer of the Wales Home For Aged Women, past Master of St. George Lodge, member of Shedad Grotto, a member of the Brockton Country Club, Country Club of Halifax, Old Colony YMCA, a former member of First Baptist Church and now active at Community Covenant Church.
Jay served in the US Army Air Corp during WW II as a 1st Lieutenant Pilot. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed sports, bowling and cross country skiing.
In addition to his wife Marjorie he is survived by a son J. Dean Shurtleff of Winthrop, MA; a daughter Christine M. Giovannello and her husband Robert of Brockton; two grandchildren Laura and Sofia Giovannello and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Mabel Pond.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at 10:00 AM in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, Chapel For All Faiths, 647 Main St. Brockton, MA. Interment will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 from 4-7 PM in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, Brockton, MA.

Juanita “Nita” Silva

Juanita “Nita” (Albares) (Shearing) Silva age 77 years of West Bridgewater, MA died Thursday, October 9, 2003 at Life Care Center of West Bridgewater after a long illness. She was the wife of Raymond L. “Mickey” Silva of 14 years and was the wife of the late Clifford F. Shearing, Sr.
Born March 1, 1926 in Patterson Louisiana she was the daughter of the late Acniel Albares and the late Eunice (Tabor) Albares.
Nita was educated in Louisiana schools and had lived in Brockton, MA and the past 25 years in West Bridgewater, MA. She was a Communicant of St. Ann’s Church in West Bridgewater.
In addition to her husband Raymond “Mickey” she is survived by three children Clifford F. Shearing, Jr. of Bridgewater, Terry Gaquin of West Bridgewater and Lawrence Shearing of Brockton; a grandson John Gaquin of West Bridgewater; a brother Gerald Albares and his family of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and many nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at 11:00 AM in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, Chapel For All Faiths647 Main St. Brockton, MA. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 from 10 - 11 AM.
Interment will follow in Melrose Cemetery in Brockton.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be given to St. Ann's Church, West Bridgewater, Old Colony Hospice or Alzheimer’s Research.

Lynn (Rodstrom) Buckley

Lynn (Rodstrom) Buckley aged 43 years of Lakeville, MA died Saturday, October 18, 2003 at her home in Lakeville after a courageous battle against breast cancer. She was the loving wife of Christopher M. Buckley.
Born Monday, August 8, 1960 in Chicago, IL she was the daughter of Charles & Angie (Paradiso) Rodstrom of Fox River Grove, IL.
Lynn was a graduate of Boston College and went on after her degree to open her own business, Essentials Inc., a specialty women’s clothing store. She opened her first store in 1987 in Easton, MA and in 1994 opened two additional locations in Hanover and Mashpee, MA. For 16 years Lynn served these south shore communities and was active in both the New England and New York Fashion Apparel Markets.
Lynn touched the lives of so many people with her work in the community as an active parent and a successful retailer. As a breast cancer survivor she played an active role in her treatment, learning as much about her condition as possible. She networked and investigated integrated therapies for the treatment of breast cancer. She energetically pursued and shared information with others on cutting edge treatment possibilities. Her committed effort in the area helped to prolong her life and possible the lives of other women as well.
Lynn’s fundraising efforts are well known in her community, in 2000, she completed the Avon 3 day walk for breast cancer. Her company, Essentials Inc. has made corporate contributions to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute for many years with the request that the donation be earmarked for breast cancer research. She was a dedicated member of Stepping Stones Bone Marrow Transplant Support Group, and the New England Coalition for Cancer Survivorship.
In addition to her husband Christopher and her parents Charles and Angie she is survived by two sons Michael and Andrew Buckley both of Lakeville; a brother Jeff Rodstrom of Spring Grove, IL and a sister Debbie Rodstrom of Sana Monica CA. Lynn will be missed by her family, many friends, customers and business associates across the country.
A funeral will be held on Tuesday at 8:30 AM in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 280 Bedford St. Lakeville, MA followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. John Neumann Church, E. Freetown. Interment will follow in Sampson Cemetery in Lakeville.
Visitation will take place on Monday from 5-9 PM.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be given to New England Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, 6 Strathmore Road, Natick, MA 01760.

Manuel “Santana” Gonsalves

Manuel “Santana” Gonsalves aged 97 years of Brockton, MA died Saturday, October 18, 2003 at Brockton Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mary (Santos) Gonsalves.
Born Sunday, July 29, 1906 in Fogo, Cabo Verde he was the eighth child in a family of fourteen children.
He and his brother Julio came to the United States in 1926.
Santana married Mary Natalia Santos in 1935 and worked in Crucible Steel Mill during WW II.
His family moved to Boston in 1950 and lived on Fayston and Livingston Streets. Santana worked in Pina’s Market on Shawmut Avenue for Miguel Pina. After Miguel’s death Santana continued operating the store until he retired in 1982.
He enjoyed watching his grandchildren after school.
He is survived by three children Manuel and his wife Rachel, Francis and his wife Shirley and John and his wife Margo; seven grandchildren Monique, John, Manuel IV, Alexander, Mark, Nina and Juliana; six great-grandchildren Christopher, Michael, Alexander, Manuel V, Jason and Peter and also many nieces, nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter Barbara.
A funeral will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2003 at 8:00 AM in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 647 Main St. Brockton, MA followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00 AM in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Brockton. Interment will follow in Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree, MA.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday October 22, 2003 from 4-8 PM in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 647 Main St. Brockton, MA.

Yaritza Otero Soto aged 14 years of Brockton, MA died unexpectedly on Monday, October 27, 2003. She was the daughter of Lucy Soto and stepdaughter of Hector Ortiz.
She was born on Thursday, June 1, 1989 in Manati, Puerto Rico and was a freshman at Brockton High School. She assisted at El Buen Samaritano Church in Brockton and enjoyed going to the mall, talking on the phone and going to church.
She is survived by her mother Lucy of Brockton; two sisters Karina and Sheila Otero; a stepfather Hector Ortiz; grandmother Juanita Rivera all of Brockton. Her father Angel Otero; grandmother Carmen Ramos; grandfather Miguel Otero all of Puerto Rico and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 31, 2003 at 10:00 AM in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 647 Main St. Brockton, MA. Interment will follow in Melrose Cemetery in Brockton, MA.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, October 29, 2003 and Thursday, October 30, 2003 from 5-9 PM.
