Joseph A. Cenga
Veteran Joseph A. Cenga, of Centerville, a survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, died at the Quincy Medical Center in Quincy January 14, 2007. He was 86.
Mr. Cenga was born and raised in Chelsea. He was a graduate of the Huntington Preparatory School and Burdett Business College.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1940 and was serving with the 24th Infantry Division at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked the installation on December 7, 1941. He served in the Army for years rising to the rank of Technical Sergeant and receiving the Combat Infantry badge and two Bronze Stars for meritorious duty during ground combat in the Pacific.
Mr. Cenga worked as an insurance agent with MetLife for 28 years. He retired in 1979.
He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, the 24th Infantry Association, the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was the beloved father of Felicia Byron and Anthony Cenga both of Quincy, Jeffrey Cenga of Barnstable and the late William, Carol and Joseph Cenga, the brother of Regina Patricco and Joanne Woodley both of Chelsea. He was also the grandfather of four and the great-grandfather of two.
A Funeral Service will be held in the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm Street (Off Hancock St.) QUINCY CENTER on Thursday morning at 9:00. Interment with military honors will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 11:30.
Visiting hours will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday from 4:00 – 8:00 PM.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army 100 North Street Hyannis, MA 02601-3822.

Celia V. (Southard) Blight
Celia V. (Southard) Blight, age 76 passed away at her home in Wollaston on January 11, 2007. Born in Monmouth, Maine where she was raised and educated, she has lived in Quincy for the last 56 years. She had also lived briefly in Winthrop and Jamaica Plain.
Before retiring Celia worked for 15 years as a book binder at the former Semline Book Bindery in Braintree. She enjoyed her volunteer work for the West Quincy Baptist Church and the Church of Presidents in Quincy Center.
Loving wife of the late Duncan E. Blight, she is survived by her beloved children Irene Lipinski of Weymouth, Debra Connell and Lucy Bean, both of Quincy and Lt.Ralph E. Blight,QFD of Hanson. She is the special loving grandmother of Eddie and Alyssa Costello, Jordan and Justin Blight, and Evan, Eddie and Jasmine Bean. She also leaves her great grandchildren Jonathan, Dylan and Domenic and her sister Annie Mae MacRay of Maine.
The funeral will be from the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm Street, Quincy Center on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at 9:00am. A funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church 81 Prospect Ave. (off Beale St) Wollaston at 10:00am. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
Visiting hours are on Friday, January 12 from 4:00 to 8:00pm. Interment at Pine Hill Cemetery, West Quincy.

Michael J. Ruscio, Jr.
Veteran Sergeant First Class Michael J. Ruscio, Jr., US Army Reserves, Retired, a custodian, died on Thursday, January 4, 2007 at the Brockton VA Medical Center. He was 59.
He was born and raised in Quincy and a graduate of Quincy High School.
Mike began his service in the United States Army with two tours of duty in a Mobile Surgical Hospital during the Vietnam War. Following his years of active duty he remained in the Army Reserves attached to a medical unit. He retired from the Army in 1996 with several decorations including the Army Commendation Medal.
In his civilian life he worked in various industries. For many years he worked as a truck driver for Dickinson Direct Marketing in Braintree. He also worked as an engineer at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in Randolph. Most recently, he had been working as a custodian for the Braintree School Department.
Mike was a member of the Morrissette American Legion Post in Quincy and the Weymouth Eagles.
He enjoyed camping.
Mike is the loving husband and soulmate of Anita (Levesque) Ruscio, the loving father of Michael Ruscio of Weynouth, Francis F. Ruscio of TX, Michelle Stackpole of Middleboro, Richard Stackpole of Weymouth, Billie-Joe Allen of Kingston and Carrie Ann Barnes of Abinton, the beloved son of Marion (Hiscock)of Brockton and the late Joseph Michael Ruscio, the brother of Jean Shea of Bridgewaater. Joan Roffo of Norwell, Michael Kurey of Berkley, Paul Ruscio of Quincy, Cheryl Mitchell of Lakeville and the late Robert, Joseph "Jo-Jo", and Christopher Ruscio and the cherished Papa to 13 grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Quincy Center an Tuesday, January 9 at 10:00am. Burial with military honors will follow at Knollwood Memorial park in Canton.
Visiting hours are on Monday from 4:00 to 8:00pm.

George F. Ryan
George F. Ryan, age 65, died at his home in Quincy home on Thursday, March 29, 2007. Born in Dorchester, he was the son of the late George and Gertrude (McNeill) Ryan. He graduated form Boston Technical High School and and Northeatern University, Class of 1980. He lived in Texas for a time and then in Pembroke and has been a Quincy resident for the past 25 years.
George was a Building Trades teacher at Quincy Vocational Tech and South Shore Vocational Technical High School in Hanover until his illness him to stop teaching.
As a member of the Braintree Moose Lodge #413, George was an avid player on their Pool Team which won first place in the South Shore Pool League Division for the past four years. He was also a member and Leading Knight of the Braintree Elks Lodge # 2633.
George is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Mary T. (Flanagan), his daughters Christine Kojac and her husband Jeff of Arlington, VA and Brenda Ryan of Braintree. His is the adored grandfather of Bryce Kojac and the dear brother of Gerald of Weymouth, Dennis of Holbrook and Donald and his wife Mary of Raynham. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center on Monday, April 2 at 10:30 AM. Visiting hours are on Sunday, April 1 from 5:00 to 9:00PM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment is in Pine Hill Cemetery, West Quincy.

John Gargano
Veteran John Gargano, QFD, Retired, of Quincy, age 74, died Thursday, March 29, 2007 after a short illness at Quincy Medical Center.
John was born in Quincy where he was raised and educated. He is a veteran who served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was appointed as a firefighter for the City of Quincy in 1957 serving on Hose 1, Engine 5, Engine 3, Engine 2 and as Senoir Fire Alarm Operator. During his career he rescued a combative man from a three alarm fire on Brook St. while assigned to Engine 3. At another fire on South St. he narrowly avoided being engulfed by flames while searching for twin infants thought to be trapped in the blaze. He also heroically dove into Quincy Bay to search for trapped occupants of a sinking car. After an injury in the 1970's John was then assigned to the Fire Alarm Office where he worked until his retirement after 32 years of service.
He is the beloved husband of Shirley M. (Skinner) and the beloved father of Debra E. Colley of Weymouth, Diane M. Stewart of Brockton, Darlene M. Gargano of Quincy and John J. Gargano of Norwell. He is also survived by his brother Timothy Gargano of Rockland and 6 grandchildren.
Visiting hours at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center on Monday, April 2 from 5:00 to 7:00pm. Funeral service to follow at 7:00pm. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
Interment private.

Mary Katherine (Doyle) Meyer
Veteran Mary Katherine (Doyle) Meyer, of Quincy passed away at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at age 85. Born in Brookline, Mrs. Meyer was raised and educated in Quincy and was a graduate of Quincy High School.
During World War II she joined the Navy. She was a teletype operator at the South Boston Naval Annex where she worked under the command of the Chief of Naval Communications. Able to record and store secret codes at 90 wpm, she received the Morse Code message that identified a German spy submarine off the northeast coast of America off Maine. In 1997 she was among the women veterans from around the world who were invited to attend the the dedication of the Womens' War Memorial in Washington DC.
She was a dedicated Mom, who raised her children on her own after her husband Christian died in 1953. After her children were grown she returned to work as an administrative assistant at the Harvard Coop, where she worked for 17 years and then at Jordan Marsh, where she worked for another 8 years.
She was also an avid Red Sox fan.
Mrs. Meyer leaves her children Lt. Commander Christian J. Meyer USN, Ret. of Coatesville, PA, Ted V. Meyer of Raynham and Kerry Tondorf of Scituate. She is also survived by her sister Helen Doyle and her brother George Doyle, both of Hough's Neck.
She is the beloved grandmother of Lynn Marie Meyer, Christian J. Meyer, Jr., Eric Meyer, Matthew J. Tondorf, Kara Tondorf, Michael Tondorf, Julaina Tondorf, Jillian Meyer, Jonathan Meyer and Justin Walton and loving great-grandmother of Daniel Riley Meyer and Abigail Tondorf. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be from the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center on Friday, March 30 at 10:00am. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in Most Blessed Sacrament Church, Hough's Neck at 11:00am. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
Visiting hours are on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00pm.
Interment with military honors will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 1:45pm.

Mark S. Whelton
Mark S. Whelton, formerly of Quincy, died on Wednesday, March 21, 2007 in Houston, Texas . He was 53.
Mark was born in Chelsea and raised in Quincy where he lived for many years before moving to Texas . He attended Quincy High School.
He was a painter.
Mark was the beloved son of Loretta A. (Pompeo) Whelton of Quincy and the late Paul F. Whelton, Jr., the brother of Michael Whelton and his wife Harriett of Braintree, Steven Whelton of MS and Julie Whelton of Rockland and the uncle of Ross Whelton, Marlene Whelton, Nina Benoit, Tyler Currier and the late Scott Quinn.
A funeral service will be held in the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. Quincy Center on Wednesday morning at 10:00. Burial will follow in Mount Wollaston Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.

Roy F. Matthews
Veteran Roy F. Matthews, of Quincy, a retired pipe fitter, died at home on Saturday, March 17, 2007. He was 76.
He was born in Lebanon, NH and moved to Braintree as a boy. He was a graduate of Braintree High School.
After high school, Roy moved to Barre, VT to study for a career in granite monuments before enlisting in the in the United States Army. He served for two years during the Korean War.
He moved to Quincy in 1962 and worked as a pipe fitter for General Dynamics at the Fore River Shipyard for many years. He was a member of the Shipbuilders Union Local 5.
He was a member of the Houghs Neck American Legion Post and the George F. Bryant VFW Post both in Quincy.
He was the beloved husband of Freida (Merk) Matthews, the father of Elsa Paton of Athol, the step-father of Penny Mills of Hudson, Kenneth L. Mills and his wife Connie of Saugus, Kenna L. Villa and her husband Ron of Marlborough, Lori-Ann Stebbins and her friend Brian of Chicopee and the late Thomas F. Mills and the brother-in-law of Sandy Lewis of Agawam. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held in the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. QUINCY CENTER on Wednesday morning at 10:00. Cremation will follow.
Visiting hours will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 – 8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Roy’s memory may be made to Bethany Congregational Church 18 Spear St. Quincy, MA 02169.

Stephen L. Bergonzi
Stephen L. Bergonzi, a mortgage broker, of Marietta, GA, formerly of Quincy, died suddenly, March 9, 2007. He was 51.
Steve was born in Tewksbury and was raised in Quincy. He was a graduate of Quincy High School and Sylvania Technical School.
He was working as mortgage broker in Georgia at the time of death.
Steve was the beloved father of Andrea Bergonzi of Quincy, the brother of Marcia Befera of Halifax, the uncle of Stephanie E. Befera of Wareham, Meghan L. Befera and Alanna M. Befera both of Plymouth, the fiancé of Janet Dennis of GA and the former husband of Judith Bergonzi of Quincy.
A celebration of Steve’s life will be held in the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home 74 Elm St. (Off Hancock St.) QUINCY CENTER on Sunday from 2:00 – 4:00 PM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Steve’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
