William J. Flynn; Naval commander

Cmdr. William J. "Bill" Flynn, U.S. Navy, Ret., age 65, husband of Martha (Fisher) (Nadeau) Flynn of Sandwich, formerly of Salem and Marblehead, died in the Cape Cod Hospital on Friday morning following an illness of many months.

He was born in Salem, the son of the late James and Mary Gertrude "Molly" (Currin) Flynn, was educated in Salem schools and graduated from St. John's Preparatory School, class of 1951. Following his graduation from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1955 he sailed in the Merchant Marine for a brief period until beginning his military career in the United States Navy.

Having served 26 years with the Navy, he first served in the Executive Office of Shore Activity for five years, continued in Staff Operations and Plans and later served in the Chief Staff.

Cmdr. Flynn was trained in submarine duty and served in amphibious readiness until becoming an executive officer afloat. He served more than 11 years at sea. Having seen duty during Vietnam, he was awarded the meritorious Unit Commendation, the National Defense Service medal, the Navy Commendation medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with one star, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.

Following his discharge in 1980, he was director of maintenance and engineering for 10 years at Melrose Wakefield Hospital. He enjoyed fishing, cooking and boating. Cmdr. Flynn also remained active at Massachusetts Maritime Academy in the Alumni Association and the Board of Directors.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Patrick Flynn of Marblehead; two daughters and a son-in-law, Catherine Flynn of Nantucket and Kelly and Frank Delaney of Danvers; two stepsons, John D. Nadeau of Malden and Roger A. Nadeau of Melrose; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Michael Flynn, and a sister, M. Jean Flynn.

His funeral will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 federal Street, Salem. Committal services will be at 12:30 p.m. in the V.A. National Cemetery in Bourne. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

Those who wish may make a memorial contribution to cancer research at Massachusetts General Hospital, in care of Dr. Thomas Lynch, 55 Fruit Street, Boston, Mass.

Constance Crosby; family in Marblehead

Constance (Welch) (Freeman) Crosby, 91, formerly of Swampscott, passed away in a Marblehead nursing home June 17 following a brief illness.

She was born in Swampscott, daughter of the late John H. and Mary C. (Pitman) Welch, and was the wife of the late Robert Crosby and Norman Freeman.

Mrs. Crosby was a graduate of Swampscott High School, Smith College and for many years was the secretary to Dr. Paul Butler of Boston, retiring in 1968. She was a member of the Marblehead Garden Club and was one of the original members of the First Church in Swampscott, Congregational.

She is survived by two step-daughters, Patricia Ann Keiver and Pamela Jean Healey of Marblehead. She was the sister of the late Olive Crosby, Anita Taylor and Jeannette Hartwell. She also leaves seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held June 20 and burial was in Swampscott Cemetery.

Doris Dunn; member of League of Women Voters

Doris (Wyman) Dunn of Marblehead died Saturday, June 21, in Salem Hospital at age 87. She was the wife of the late John B. Dunn III. Born in Manchester, N.H., she was the daughter of Grey H. Wyman III and Ethel (Reed) Wyman.

She graduated from Hood College in the early 1930s with a degree in classical language, including Greek and Latin. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and the Elderhostil Traveler's Group. She enjoyed golfing, bowling and sailing.

Surviving Mrs. Dunn is her daughter Hannah Miller and her husband, the Rev. Joseph Miller of Providence, R.I.; her grandchildren, Jennifer Brinley (Miller) of Connecticut and Richard Miller of Oklahoma; her brother Grey H. Wyman Jr. of New Jersey; and her three nieces, Diane Cornsweet of Arizona, Pamela Wyman of New Jersey and Trish Wyman of Canada.

Mrs. Dunn was predeceased by her brother, the late Austin Reed Wyman.

Memorial services were held June 25 in Marblehead.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Marblehead Visiting Nurse Association, Widger Road, Marblehead.

Joseph E. Dunn; attended Marblehead schools

Joseph E. Dunn, 37, formerly of Marblehead, died suddenly June 20 in the North Carolina Medical Center.

He was raised in Boston, the son of Patricia F. (Hyde) Dunn of Marblehead. He lived in Marblehead for 19 years, attending schools here. For the past 18 years he lived in North Carolina.

He was employed in the construction field as a sheet-rock installer.

In addition to his mother, he leaves two sons, Joseph F. Dunn and Anthony Dunn; one brother, David G. Dunn of Highland, N.Y.; four sisters, Andrea M. Cook of Salem, Laura M. Arsenault of Northboro, N.H., Julie A. Cashman of Marblehead and Maria C. Dunn of Salem.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 8:30 a.m. at the Solimine, Landergan and Rhodes Funeral Home, 67 Ocean Street, Route 1A in Lynn, followed by Funeral Mass in Our Lady, Star of the Sea Church in Marblehead at 10 a.m.

Leonard Pass; attorney

Attorney Leonard Pass, 71, of Revere, husband of Marilyn (Segal) Pass, died June 18 at Salem Hospital following a short illness.

Born in Boston, he was educated in Revere schools. He was a practicing attorney in Revere for many years, having graduated from Boston University and Boston University Law School. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of the Jewish War veterans, Prince Strauss of Revere; a member of the Henry Price Masonic Lodge of Cambridge; and a member of the Massachusetts, Revere and Chelsea Bar Associations. He was a member of Congregation Ahanis Achim and Temple B'nai Israel of Revere.

In addition to his wife he leaves a daughter, Judith Dunn of Marblehead and her husband Larry; a son, attorney Harry Pass of Marblehead and his wife, Lise; a brother, Norman Pass of California; grandchildren Seth, Robert, Douglas and Samantha. He was also the brother of the late Phyllis Stick.

Funeral services were held June 20 and interment was in Everett. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Lester H. Oppenheim; lived in Marblehead 50 years

Lester H. Oppenheim, 85, of Atlantis, Fla., died at home Thursday after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Selma (Bernstein) Oppenheim.

Born in Brockton, he lived in Marblehead for 50 years before residing in Florida for the past 10. Oppenheim was a member of the Brockton High class of 1930 and was a member of the basketball team, which won the 1929 state title and national title in Chicago. He also was active in the 60th class reunion.

In 1934, he graduated from Yale University, where he was a member of the basketball and swimming teams. In 1945, he founded Cressey, Dockham Co., a wholesale food distribution company in Salem and Andover, of which he later became chief financial officer. He retired in 1985.

Oppenheim was active in the National and New England Wholesale Food Distribution Association and was responsible for the development of the IGA Food Franchise in New England in the 1950s.

An avid golfer, he entered many amateur tournaments and, with his son Peter, won the father-and-son championship at Winchester Country Club. He was a member of the Kernwood Country Club in Salem, Atlantis Country Club in Atlantis, Fla., and the Yale University Golf Club.

He was a founder of Temple Emanu-El in Marblehead and a member of the Audubon Society. In his later years, he became a collector of art and enjoyed architecture and reading classics.

He leaves three sons, Peter S. Oppenheim of Swampscott, James K. Oppenheim of Andover and Donald P. Oppenheim of Quincy; a sister, Barbara Epstein of Newton Centre; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services were held June 23 and burial was in the Temple Emanu-El Memorial Park in Danvers.

Marcia J. Easterlind; member of First Baptist Church

Marcia J. Easterlind of Marblehead died Friday, June 20, after a lengthy illness at age 41. Born in Marblehead, she was the daughter of Carl and Dorothy (Nickerson) Easterlind.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Marblehead's Women's Bible Study Group.

Surviving Marcia are her two sons, James "Beau" L. Russell Jr., and Brian S. Russell, both of Marblehead; her parents, Carl and Dorothy Easterlind of Bar Harbor, Maine; her brother, Peter Easterlind of Marblehead; her sister, Christine Astuccio of Salisbury; her aunt, Ruth Cederberg of Mattapoisett and her cousin, Webb Russell of Marblehead. She is also survived by three nephews and many dear friends.

Funeral services were held June 23. Donations in Marcia's memory may be made to the Marblehead Visiting Nurse Association, Widger Road, Marblehead.

Robert W. Curley; loved animals, classical music

Robert W. Curley of Marblehead died unexpectedly June 17 in Salem Hospital after a lengthy illness at age 72. Born in Brookline on Halloween night of 1924, "Uncle Bobby," as he was affectionately called, was known by many for his charm and dry wit. Classical music, Irish mementos and stacks of cookbooks tended to surround him wherever he went.

After leaving Marblehead in the early 1970s, he traveled to northern California. The past two years were spent back in Marblehead where, in failing health, he was cared for by his daughter, Sheri, until his death.

His great love of classical music, his sense of humor, his green Irish eyes and his love for animals will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, as will his penchant for doing things his way.

A memorial service for Mr. Curley will be held at a later date. All are welcome to attend.

Surviving Mr. Curley are his son, Peter B. "Skip" Curley of San Rafael, Calif.; his daughter, Sheri Curley Shattuck of Marblehead; a sister, Joan Pope of Brewster; three nieces and a nephew.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, at his daughter Sheri's house, 12 Mariner's Lane.

Donations in Mr. Curley's memory may be made to the Northeast Animal Shelter at 204 Highland Avenue, Salem, Mass., 01970; or the Marblehead Animal Shelter, 44 Village Street, Marblehead, Mass., 01945.

Roland A. Lemieux; organized town baseball teams

Roland A. Lemieux, 68, of San Francisco, formerly of Marblehead, died at his home after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Joan H. Brewer of Marblehead and the son of the late Wilfred A. and Lauretta M. (Sweetland) Lemieux.

Born in Marblehead, Mr. Lemieux signed a professional baseball contract with the Boston Red Sox in 1945 at the age of 16. In 1950 he was invited to spend spring training with the team.

During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant and was player/coach of its baseball goodwill program, playing in South Korea and Japan. He also played semi-professional baseball in Canada for several years before retiring to Marblehead, where he organized the town amateur teams in the 1960s. He was proprietor of the Marblehead Shoe Hospital for 20 years. He was a member of Philanthropic Lodge AF & AM and St. Michael's Church. He made his home in California the last 20 years.

Mr. Lemieux is survived by son Mathew C. Lemieux of Marblehead; daughter Amy J. Lemieux of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Alice L. Dow and Janice Standley of Marblehead, and Lorraine Malionek of Salem; and brothers Donald S. Lemieux and Paul B. Lemieux of Marblehead, and Leonard O. Lemieux of Louisiana.

Graveside services were in Marblehead on Friday, June 20.

Carolyn R. Morse; Marblehead High class of 1928

Carolyn R. Morse, 98, of Marblehead, died Sunday, June 15, in the Grosvenor Park Nursing Home in Salem.

She was the wife of the late Ralph Morse, born in Marblehead, and daughter of the late Joel W. and Gertrude (Shepard) Reynolds.

Mrs. Morse was an assistant buyer for Jordan Marsh for many years.

She was a graduate of Marblehead High School class of 1928 and Simmons College class of 1932.

Mrs. Morse is survived by one sister-in-law, Margaret Taylor of Marblehead; a daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Morse of Pennsylvania; two granddaughters, one great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a son, Ralph Morse Jr., and three brothers, Morrell S. Reynolds, Joel W. Reynolds and Wiliam H. Reynolds.

Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Marblehead Visiting Nurse Association, Widger Road, Marblehead, Mass., 01945 or the Marblehead Female Humane Society, P.O. Box 425, Marblehead, Mass., 01945.

Christine M. Bragan; former resident

Christine M. Bragan, 83, formerly of Marblehead, died Saturday, June 14, in the Mediplex Nursing Home in Beverly.

Born in Swampscott, she was the wife of the late Dr. James A. Bragan.

She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Mary (Conlon) Quealy.

Mrs. Bragan is survived by two sons, Dr. John F. Bragan of San Antonio, Texas, and James A. Bragan Jr. of Johnstown, Pa.; three daughters, Mrs. Joan Henderson and Mrs. Julie Russell of South Hamilton and Janet Greeley of Hamstead, N.H.; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were Wednesday.
