Cyril Morgan; former VFW commander

Cyril Morgan, 76, formerly of Marblehead, died Saturday, June 14, at his daughter's home in Beverly. Born in Roxbury, son of the late Advigdor and Rose (Robinson) Morgan, he had lived most his life in Marblehead and had lived in Wolfeboro, N.H., since 1971.

Mr. Morgan was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Coast Guard and was a past commander of the Chaplain Lyman Rollins Post 2005 VFW in Marblehead.

He was the founder and CEO of Micrometrics Co. of Manchester, N.H.

Surviving him in addition to his wife, Pearl, are his step-mother, Miriam Morgan of Brookline; a daughter, Diane R. Morgan of Beverly; five sons, Robert C. Morgan of Beverly, Henry E. Morgan of Wolfeboro, William D. Morgan of Marblehead, Dr. Richard A. Morgan of Columbia, Md., and James P. Morgan of Bedford, N.H.; a brother, Maxwell Morgan of Pawtucket, R.I.; a sister, Gladys Welch of Scotsdale, Ariz.; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were private.

Contributions may be made in his memory to the charity of one's choice.

Ethel Davies; member of St. Michael's Church

Ethel "Eppie" Davies of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Marblehead died Monday, June 9, in Daytona at age 89. She was the wife of the late Harold Davies. Born in Leominster on Jan. 18, 1908, she was the daughter of Edward and Bessie (Barnard) Geno.

She graduated as a registered nurse from the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston, now known as Brigham and Women's Hospital.

She was a member of the Wenham Golf Club and Tedesco Country Club. She was an avid golfer and bridge player. She also was a member of St. Michael's Church in Marblehead.

She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Petersen of Marblehead; a grandson, Michael Davies Petersen of Marblehead; a sister, Mrs. Edward (Mary) W.H. Little of Lexington and Ormond Beach; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Mrs. Davies will be announced at a later date. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, Mass., 01701.

Neal Lawrence Grossman; former resident

Neal Lawrence Grossman died peacefully after a long illness Friday, June 6, at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. Born in Boston and a former resident of Marblehead, London and Los Angeles, he was 50 years old. He is mourned and missed by his many friends on both sides of the Atlantic and by his brother Loyd, sister-in-law Debbie and beloved nieces, Constance and Florence, all residents of London.

Bertha Taylor; worked for Guide's Florist

Bertha (Penny) Taylor, 78, formerly of Marblehead, passed away Saturday at a Chelsea nursing home following a brief illness. She was born in Lynn, the daughter of the late Robert and Edith (Morris) Penny and the wife of the late Charles Taylor.

She was a graduate of Swampscott High School, a former member of the Candlelight Club in Marblehead and formerly worked for Guide's Florist and the Garden Spot in Marblehead.

She is survived by son Robert Taylor and his wife, Rochelle, of Columbia, Md.; daughter Penny (Taylor) Lowe and her husband, Charles, of Billerica; grandchildren David Taylor of Hong Kong, Susan and Stephanie Taylor of San Diego, Calif., Katherine Gauthier and her husband, David, of Nashua, N.H.; and great-grandchildren Taylor and Victoria Gauthier.

Funeral services were Tuesday and interment was in Waterside Cemetery.

George Weiner; decorated World War II veteran

George Weiner, 73, late of Marblehead, died Saturday, June 7, after a lengthy illness at the Union Hospital in Lynn. He was the husband of Ann (Beden) Weiner.

Born in Chelsea, son of Eva (Pressman) Weiner of Swampscott and the late Nathan Weiner, he graduated from Chelsea High School, the University of New Hampshire and Boston University. He had lived in Marblehead for the past 32 years.

Mr. Weiner was the product manager for Chelsea Industries in Chelsea for more than 20 years before being employed by IRA Motor Group of Danvers for the past eight years.

He was a decorated veteran of World War II, having served in Germany, Italy and North Africa with the U.S. Army, and he received a Bronze Star, a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.

Mr. Weiner was a member of the Jewish War veterans, the Jewish Community Center of Marblehead and a past member of Temple Emanu-El in Marblehead.

In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include a son, Jonathan P. Weiner of Lynn; a daughter, Jill S. Weiner of Marblehead; two sisters, Edith Katz of Mashpee and Delray Beach, Fla., and Ruth Shaffer of Delray Beach, Fla.; a brother, Gerald Weiner of Andover; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were June 9 and interment was in New Tifereth Israel Memorial Park in Everett.

Alan B. Nataupsky; owned Alan's Meating Place

Alan B. Nataupsky, formerly of Swampscott and a Marblehead business owner, died May 27 in Florida.

Mr. Nataupsky was the husband of Georganne (Gale), son of Marian Nataupsky of Worcester and the late George Nataupsky. Surviving Alan in addition to his wife and mother are his daughter, Karen Lisa Sheffler and her husband, Scott of Casselberry, Fla.; grandchildren Melissa and Brian Sheffler; step-daughters Wendy and Susan; sister Elaine Williams of Worcester; brother Dr. Mark Nataupsky of Virginia; and nieces and nephews.

Mr. Nataupsky was the proprietor of Alan's Meating Place in Marblehead in the mid-1970s.

Funeral services were in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Arthur I. Strang; former Finance Committee member

Arthur I. Strang, 81, of Marblehead and Vero Beach, Fla., died June 1. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Hanson Strang. He was also the husband of the late Roberta McInnis Strang. He is survived by Arthur and Susan Strang of Cambridge; Penelope O'Hara of Rosell, Ga.; Robert Strang of Belmont, Calif.; Kristina and Stephen Wardwell of Dover; and Lisa and Timothy Burditt of Clifton Park, N.Y. He was the grandfather of Sara, Erica, Caroline, Elise, Hilary, Leslie, Anne and Alexander.

He was born in White Plains, N.Y., and graduated from Amherst College and Columbia Law School. He returned as the legal counsel for the Turbine Division of the General Electric Company Lynn River Works, previously having been with GE in Schenectady, N.Y., and Milan, Italy. He was a member of the Eastern Yacht Club of Marblehead, the Essex County Club, the Moorings Club of Vero Beach, Fla., and the Mayflower Society. He was a former member of the Finance Committee and the Electric Light Commission in Marblehead, the Boston and New York Bar associations, served on the board of directors of Lynn Hospital and was chairman of the Planning Commission of Niskayuna, N.Y. He was an avid skier and golfer.

The family requests memorial gifts to Amherst College, class of 1937, Amherst. The Memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 5, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Marblehead.

Christel Swope; political media consultant

Christel Swope, 52, vice president and partner of Ken Swope & Associates, a Democrat political media consulting firm, died Sunday, May 25, in Brigham and Women's Hospital after a four-year battle with cancer.

A resident of Marblehead since 1971, she was born Christel M. Keller in Trenton, N.J., and grew up in Morrisville, Pa. A 1963 graduate of Pennsbury High School, she was a cheerleader, prom queen, and member of the National Honor Society. She attended Cedar Crest College on a scholarship and graduated with a B.S. in education from Kutztown State University in Pennsylvania.

She and Ken Swope met as public school teachers in Reading, Pennsylvania. They married in 1968 and moved to Marblehead in 1971. In Marblehead, Mrs. Swope raised two children, worked as a librarian at Glover School and became partner, vice president and manager of Ken Swope & Associates Inc. of Boston in 1984.

Throughout the '80s and '90s Chris Swope managed television, radio and newspaper advertising for many election campaigns for Democrats and for various progressive organizations including the campaigns of George McGovern (1984), Sen. Joseph Biden, Gov. Michael Dukakis, and Sen. Tom Harkin for President, Mayor Raymond Flynn, mayoral candidate Rosaria Salerno, U.S. Rep. James Shannon, Sen. Patrick Leahy, State Sen. George Bachrach, MassPIRG, the League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club, The Democracy for China Fund, The American Cancer Society and the Massachusetts Teachers Association.

Chris will be remembered by her friends and professional associates as a lover of nature, a dedicated worker for progressive candidates and causes, a calming voice in the heat of political campaigns, a brilliant gardener and photographer, and loving wife and mother.

She leaves her husband, Ken, and her children, Laurie and Kevin of Marblehead; her parents, Jacob and Dorothy of Morrisville, Pa.; and a brother, Kenneth Keller of Florida.

An informal gathering will be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chris Swope Memorial Fund, c/o National Grand Bank, P.O. Box 4, Marblehead, Mass., 01945-0004. Funds will be dispersed in her memory for cancer research.

Gladys J. Mower; lived in Marblehead, Swampscott

Gladys J. Mower, 98, died May 28 at Huggins Hospital, Wolfeboro, N.H. She was born in Lowell and moved to Lynn, where she attended school. She later moved to Swampscott, where she lived until the death of her husband, the late Fred L. Mower, at which point she moved to Marblehead. Mrs. Mower lived in Wolfeboro for the past five years.

She was a member of the Congregational Church in Swampscott and the Garden Club of Swampscott.

She is survived by a son-in-law, John M. Newton of Wolfeboro; four grandchildren, Peter M. Newton of Medway, Mark L. Newton of Snellville, Ga., Peter M. Newton of South Burlington, Vt., and David J. Newton of Boston; six great-grandchildren and a niece. She was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Mower Newton of Wolfeboro.

A private burial will be held in Swampscott.

Betty Ebersole Ames; family in Marblehead

Betty Ebersole Ames, 81, of East Falmouth and Richmond, Va., died recently. She leaves her husband of 62 years, Walter F. Ames; a sister, Dorothy Gould of Puyallup, Wash.; three children, Alice Boller of Beaverdam, Va., Betty Wright of Springfield and Blair Ames of Marblehead; five grandchildren, Duncan Rose of Phoenix, Ariz., Meggin Rose of Ithaca, N.Y., Kirsten Rose of Berkeley, Calif., Benjamin Wright of San Francisco, Calif., and Blair Ames of Marblehead; and one great-grandchild, Iris Packman.

Services will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in South Weymouth at 10 a.m. Monday, June 20. Memorials may be made in her honor to Citizens for Protection of Waquoit Bay, P.O. Box 3021, Waquoit, Mass., 02536.

Donald T. Hardwick Sr.; town of Marblehead foreman

Donald T. Hardwick Sr., 64, of Marblehead, died Sunday in a Saugus nursing home. Born in Marblehead he was the son of the late Thomas and Eva (Henderson) Hardwick and the husband of Elizabeth (Richardson) Hardwick. He was a lifelong resident of Marblehead.

Mr. Hardwick attended Marblehead schools and served in the Korean War.

He was a foreman for the town of Marblehead and worked as a heavy equipment operator for 32 years, retiring in 1989.

He was a member of the VFW Post 2005, Marblehead.

In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons, Donald T. Hardwick Jr. of Peabody, Jamie H. Hardwick of Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter, Dorinda McHugh of Danvers; three brothers, Robert and his wife, Carol Hardwick, of Manchester-by-the-Sea; David and his wife, Patricia Hardwick, of Lynn; and Peter and his wife, Nettie Hardwick, of Marblehead, and three sisters, Annabelle and her husband, Parker Humphrey, of Kingston, N.H., Patricia and her husband, Paul Cowhig, of Middleton, and Elizabeth Mace of Beverly.

Mr. Hardwick leaves a step-son, John Morency of Shirley, and two step-daughters, Phyllis and her husband Frank Scanzani of Ipswich and Judith Gaudet of Essex. He also leaves two grandchildren, Danielle and Britany McHugh of Danvers and a step-son John D. Gaudet of Salem, and a step-granddaughter, Leslie A. Gaudet of Marblehead; four step-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Elizabeth R. Hardwick.

Graveside services will be held in Waterside Cemetery in Marblehead at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Relatives and friends are invited to gather inside the main gate at 1:20 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 1 Kendall Square, Building 600, Cambridge, Mass., 02139.

Robert Salvi; son, grandchildren in Marblehead

Robert Salvi, a former resident of Marblehead, died peacefully May 25 in Pawling, N.Y., after a short illness. He was born in Italy on Dec. 16, 1908.

He is survived by his wife, Pietrina Salvi of Pawling, N.Y., a son, Enrico Salvi of Marblehead; a daughter, Sperandina Salvi of Somers, N.Y.; a brother, Giovanni Corsetti of Montreal; and five granddaughters, Julie and Janice Salvicrup of New York and Kristen, Elisabeth and Laura Salvi of Marblehead. He was interred at Hartsdale, N.Y., on May 29.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Italian Home for Children, 1125 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, Mass., 02130-3495.

Elinor Heys Ward; member of Boston Yacht Club

Elinor Heys Ward, 76, of Marblehead died May 14 at her home. She was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth (Gray) Heys.

A graduate of Swampscott High School, she attended Briarcliff Junior College in New York, the Sacker School of Design in Boston and the Marsters School in Boston. She was a member of the Boston Yacht Club.

She leaves several cousins and many friends. She was the former wife of Richard Ward of New London, N.H., and Stuart, Fla.

Services were private.

Elizabeth Shattuck; memorial service Friday

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, for Elizabeth Shattuck, who passed away Dec. 11, 1996. The service will be held at her grave-side in Waterside Cemetery in Marblehead.
