Grace Parker Caswell; Star of the Sea Church member

Grace Parker Caswell, 95, of North Sandwich, N.H., and formerly of Marblehead, died May 18 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, N.H.

She was the wife of the late Herbert H. Caswell.

She leaves two sons, Herbert H. Caswell Jr. of Ypsilanti, Mich., and F. Parker Caswell of Marblehead; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She was predeceased by a son, James W. Caswell of North Sandwich, N.H.

Mrs. Caswell was a member of Star of the Sea Church of Marblehead for 90 years before moving to New Hampshire.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Marblehead. Donations in her memory may be made to Star of the Sea Church Christian Service, Marblehead, Mass., 01945.

Harry Rosenfeld; owned market in Marblehead

Harry Rosenfeld, 85, of Marblehead died May 16 at home following a brief illness.

Born in Salem and a graduate of Salem High School, Mr. Rosenfeld had lived in Marblehead since 1972.

He owned and operated Ben and Harry's Market on Leach Street in Salem and Ben and Harry's Meats at Beach Bluff Market in Marblehead before retiring in 1969.

He was a member of Temple Shalom in Salem and was actively involved with the Minyanaires at the temple. He leaves his wife, Beatrice (Swartz) Rosenfeld; two daughters, Nancy Miller and Ellen Gordon, both of Marblehead; a brother, Morry Rosenfeld of Revere; a sister, Jean Finklestein of Salem; a brother-in-law, Ben Linsky; two nephews, Dr. Philip Linsky and George Linsky; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Todd, Stephanie, Randy, Debora, Seth and Aarin.

Services were Sunday and burial was in Sons of Jacob Cemetery in Danvers.

Henry P. Clayman; Marblehead resident

Henry P. Clayman, 81, of Marblehead passed away Friday, May 16, at his home following an extended illness.

Mr. Clayman was a veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Gabriella; a daughter, Jane Lakatos and her husband Ferko; his son, John Clayman and his wife, Lalie; and grandchildren Nina, Jack, Annie and Ellie.

There will be a memorial service at a later date. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to a charity of one's choice that supports the interests of children.

John L. Kroen; nephew in Marblehead

John L. Kroen, 88, husband of the late Sophie (Skoniecki) Kroen and formerly of Salem, died in Union Hospital on May 15 after being stricken at Mediplex Nursing Home.

He was born in Salem, the son of the late William C. and Catherine (Callahan) Kroen. Mr. Kroen was educated at St. Mary's Grammar and High School and then served in the Sea Bees during World War II. Following his discharge, he helped to open the coal station of New England Power Co. at the Salem Harbor Station and remained employed by New England Power for more than 30 years, retiring in 1974. He enjoyed gardening and cribbage and was a member of the Crow 2 Social Club and the Collins Cove Community Club. Mr. Kroen also enjoyed horse racing at Suffolk Downs.

He is survived by six nieces and nephews: Eleanor Remon of Salem, John Kenney of Salem, Mary Ruth Wallis of Lynn, William Kroen of Belmont, John Kroen of Marblehead and Kathleen Centonrino of Boston; and many grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by three brothers: Charles, Howard and William Kroen, and a sister, Sophie Kenney.

Funeral services were held May 19 and interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Salem. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Alzheimer's research.

Leonard Graves Humphrey Jr.; marine engineer

Grave-side services for Leonard Graves Humphrey Jr. will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 9, at Waterside Cemetery in Marblehead. He died March 5 in Bethesda, Md., at the age of 85. He was a Marblehead resident and graduated from Marblehead High School and received an engineering degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester. He was a marine engineer for the Buffalo Forge Company in Washington, D.C., for 40 years, retiring in 1977.

Mr. Humphrey was predeceased by his wife, Louise Bowden Humphrey, also a native of Marblehead. He is survived by his son, Chester B. Humphrey, M.D. of West Hartford, Conn., his daughter, Ann Louise Davis of Rockville, Md., three grandsons, John Humphrey Davis, William Andrew Davis and Andrew Bowden Humphrey, and two great-granddaughters.

Memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church of Chevy Chase, Md., or the charity of your choice.

Louise Carter; daughter in Marblehead

Louise Carter, 98, of Swampscott, died Saturday in a Salem nursing home. A lifelong resident of Swampscott, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Joanna (Blaney) Foster. She was the wife of the late William E. Carter.

Mrs. Carter was a graduate of Swampscott High School and Simmons College. She was a member of the First Church in Swampscott, Congregational, the Swampscott Farm and Garden Club and Tedesco Country Club, where she played golf until age 90.

She leaves two daughters, Sally Gould of Marblehead and Jane Wats of Swampscott. She also leaves five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Laura Keiver and Helen Whiting.

A memorial celebration of Mrs. Carter's life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 24, in the First Church in Swampscott, Congregational, at 40 Monument Avenue.

Ruth (James) Osgood, 83

Ruth (James) Osgood, 83 of Marblehead, died in her home on Thursday, May 18. She was the beloved wife of the late F. Milton Osgood who pre-deceased her on May 11.

Born in Marblehead, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Annie (Barr) James.

Mrs. Osgood was a 1936 graduate of Marb1ehead High School and a 1937 graduate of the Essex Agricu1tural School. Upon completion of her schooling, she went to work at the James E. Graves Yacht Yard in Marblehead. Mrs. Osgood later worked at Dr. Stanford Hopkins' office, where she was the office manager. She also was employed by the former Elizabeth Bell Shop in Marblehead.

Mrs. Osgood was an active memo of the Old North Church in Marblehead, and belonged to the church organization Y-Con (Young Congregationalists).

Sharing a passion for sailing with her husband, Mrs. Osgood loved her summers in Marblehead, but also enjoyed escaping the New England winters by going south to the Caribbean and Florida.

Mrs. Osgood will be deeply missed by her two daughters, Leanne Dyson and her husband Bruce, and Dale Lothrop and her husband, all of Marblehead; one grandson, Norm Lothrop and his wife Janet of Marblehead; ad two great-granddaughters, Julia Ruth Lothrop and Katherine Dale Lothrop, both of Marblehead; and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her brother, Sidney Barr James.

A memorial service for both Ruth Osgood and her husband, F. Milton Osgood was held Tuesday, May 23 at 11 at the Old North Church, 41 Washington St., Marblehead. Arrangements were under the direction of the Eustis-Cornell Funeral Home of J.S. Waterman & Sons, 142 Elm St., Marblehead. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions m Mrs. Osgood's memory may be made to the Marblehead Visiting Nurse Association, Widger Rd., Marb1ehead, MA 01945 or Hospice of the North Shore, l0 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.

Alice M. Stickney, 91

Alice M. Stickney, 91, of Marblehead died at her home May 26. Born in Irondequoit, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Robert and Goldia (Howard) Smallridge. She was the wife of the late Warren Stickney.

Mrs. Stickney had lived in Marblehead for the past 10 years, having moved from Rochester, N.Y., where she was an active figure in their local activities. She was a secretary for the Rochester Gas and Electric Company and had been retired for many years.

She is survived by her daughter, Judith Peabody, and her husband, Gary, of Marblehead; a sister, May Suhr of Farmington, N.Y; and two grandsons, Christopher and Brett Peabody.

A private celebration of her life will be held.

Edwin C. Stephenson, 73

Edwin C. Stephenson, 73, of Franconia, N.H., passed away at his residence May 22 after a gallant battle with cancer. He was born in Boston, son of Preston T. and Florence (Brown) Stephenson. He attended the Fessenden School, West Newton, St. Mark's School, Southboro, and the Cambridge School of Business, Cambridge. He served in the U.S. Navy and worked for several years at the United Shoe Machines Company.He lived for many years in Sugar Hill before moving to Franconia a few years ago. While in Sugar Hill he owned and operated the Ski Pine Club. He was an avid skier and sailing enthusiast. He held membership in the Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead and the Southport Yacht Club, Southport, Maine.

He is survived by two sons, Tim and Sam Stephenson, both of Franconia, and two brothers P. Taply Stephenson of Swampscott and George Stephenson of Marblehead. A graveside service will be held in the Elmwood Cemetery, Franconia, Sunday, June 4, at 3 p.m. A reception will follow at the Franconia Inn, Easton Road, Franconia, N.H.. The Ross Funeral Horne, Littleton Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Theo Dickinson Baker III

Theo Dickinson Baker III died May 25 at St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach, Fla., after a short illness.

Born in Erie, Pa., Mr. Baker graduated from the University of Rochester in 1965 with a bachelor's degree in engineering. In college, he received letters in three sports - swimming, tennis and golf - and was president of his fraternity, Delta Upsilon.

After graduation, he worked for Eastman Kodak before co-founding Omni Laboratories, Inc. in Marblehead with his brothers. He then started Sailboats Northeast, which he operated for eight years. He then relocated to England, where he developed and operated a Shakespearean Theater in Stratford-upon-Avon. After returning to the U.S., he started Applied Electronics Systems in Marblehead. He returned to Wales and was active in several ventures before returning to Jupiter, Fla., where he was a marine contractor.

He leaves his three children, Leslie Baker of Maine, Elizabeth Dickinson Baker of Sudbury, and Lincoln Warren Baker of Montana; his uncle, Lincoln Traver of St. Petersburg, Fla. and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the brother of Samuel M. Baker of Marblehead, and Lincoln E. Baker, who died in 1992.

A memorial service will be held at the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm St., Marblehead, at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 8.

Dr. Harry L. Pine, 72

Dr. Harry L. Pine, 72, of Princeton, NJ, formerly of Marblehead, died at his residence on May 20 after a valiant struggle with brain cancer.

Born in Boston, Dr Pine had resided in New Jersey for the past 20 years. He previously lived in Marblehead for 15 years and before that in Lynn.

Dr. Pine was a 1949 graduate of Yale University and Boston University School of Medicine Class of 1957, taking his OB-GYN training at US Naval Hospital in Boston and Brigham & Women's Hospital.

He was a military veteran serving with distinction in the US Army during World War II, the US Navy and Marine Corps during the Korean conflict and the Navy during the Vietnam War, retiring as the first Chief of OB-GYN at the newly commissioned US Submarine Base Medical Center, Groton, CT. He left the military to establish an extensive private practice in Lynn and Peabody, where curing his career he delivered more that 4000 infants.

In 1980, he joined Johnson & Johnson as their director of Medical Affairs for Personal Products and J&J Worldwide Absorbent Products & Materials Research. In the early 1980s, Dr Pine led the J&J research team efforts, making valuable contributions to elucidate the patho-physiology of Toxic Shock Syndrome, and was responsible for numerous medical publications. During his long association with J&J, Dr Pine became a world renowned expert on the medical aspects of feminine hygiene and feminine urinary incontinence products. Dr Pine was also Assistant Clinical Professor of OB-GYN, Emeritus at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ.

Following his retirement from Johnson & Johnson, he continued to be active as a consultant in feminine health care and feminine hygiene products to several prominent manufacturers and research laboratories.

Dr Pine is survived by his wife, Dolores (Baker); a daughter and son in law, Randelle "Randi" and Alan Margossian of East Brunswick, NJ; and a granddaughter, Lindsay Margossian. He was also the father of the late Geoffrey Pine.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 24 at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapels in Salem, with interment at Temple Emanu-el Memorial Park in Danvers. Expressions of sympathy in Dr. Pine's name may be made to Pine Family Camp Simcha Scholarship Fund, c/o Jewish Community Center of the North Shore, 1 Community Road, Marblehead or the Pine Family Scholarship Fund, c/o Hillel Academy, 6 Community Road, Marblehead.

F. Milton Osgood, 83

F. Milton Osgood, 83, of Marblehead, died May 11 at Salem Hospital. He was the husband of Ruth (James) Osgood.

Born in Marblehead Dec. 15, 1916, he was the son of the late Clyde and Mildred (Arington) Osgood.

Mr. Osgood graduated from Marblehead High School, class of 1935. He then went on to attend Northeastern University.

Mr. Osgood was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Osgood worked at the James E. Graves Yacht Yard as Superintendent for over 35 years before retiring in 1981. He was a navid yachtsman and boat builder. He was a member of the Old North Church in Marblehead.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Leanne Dyson and her husband Bruce of Marblehead and Dale Lothrop and her husband Richard of Marblehead; one grandson, Norm Lothrop, and his wife Janet of Marblehead; two great-granddaughters, Julia Ruth Lothrop and Katherine Dale Lothrop of Marblehead, and his cousin, Grant Dixey of Kearsarge, N.H.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, May 23 at 11 a.m. at Old North Church, Marblehead. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Osgood's name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 66-Y Concord St., Wilmington, MA 01887-2100.

Daniel Hibberd Taylor, 32

Daniel Hibberd Taylor, 32, of Burbank, Calif., died at home of cancer.

Mr. Taylor was the son of Polly Taylor of Marblehead and James Taylor of Harmans, Md.

He was raised in Marblehead and graduated from Marblehead High School in 1986. He received his BA from Cornell University.

From 1990 to 1998, Mr. Taylor served as an officer in the U.S. Navy. An initial assignment to the USS Fox (CG 33) included deployment to the Persian Gulf. During the assignment, he became a First Lieutenant. He was later assigned as Squadron Operations Officer/Sail Training Instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and then as Weapons Control Officer aboard the AEGIS destroyer USS Benfold (DDG 65).

From 1998 until his death, he was a manager at the Union Pacific Railroad Co.

Mr. Taylor enjoyed a lifelong love of sailing. He was a member of the New York Yacht Club and an accomplished yachtsman, sailing and racing out of Marblehead, Annapolis, San Diego, and Newport, R.I.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Taylor leaves two brothers, Andrew of San Diego, and Peter of Portland, Maine.
