Dorothy Smalley

Thursday, April 17, 2003

Dorothy Smalley, 101, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Marist Hill Nursing Home in Waltham. She was the wife of the late Peter Sheahan and Edward Smalley.

She was born in Ireland on Aug. 2, 1901, the daughter of the late Daniel and Margaret (Crowley) Coffey.

Mrs. Smalley was an administrator in the hotel industry.

She was a reader and speaker of the Gaelic language.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Peter Sheahan and his wife Linda Jo of Groton, Nancy Sheahan of Lexington, Tim Sheahan of Ayer, and Kerry Sheahan of Chicago, Ill.; and three great-grandchildren.

She was the mother of the late Cornelius T. Sheahan and Daniel Sheahan.

A funeral was held April 4, from the Douglass Funeral Home in Lexington, followed by a funeral Mass at in St. Brigid's Church, Lexington. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.

Bette Wilson

BEVERLY - Bette (Bowe) Wilson, 78, formerly of Lexington, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Beverly Hospital.

She was born in Arlington, the daughter of the late Lewis and N. Vivian (Warren) Bowe.

Mrs. Wilson was employed as an AAA member secretary in Merrimack Valley. She was a licensed broker of life, accident and health, property and casualty and was also employed as a life insurance agent with the John Hancock Life Insurance Company.

She was a member of the order of the Eastern Star in Andover, and formerly the Lexington chairman for the Girl Scout Council.

She is survived by a son, William Wilson III and his wife Robin of Wenham; three daughters, Wendy Gately and her husband William of Barrington, R.I., Patricia Munier of Augusta, Maine, and Dawn Kidd and her husband Peter of Shirley; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late L. Warren Bowe.

A private funeral service was held at the Wenham Cemetery at the request of the family.

Barbara Parsons

SANDWICH, N.H. - Barbara "Ginger" (Smith) Parsons, 78, died Sunday, April 2, 2003, at her home in Sandwich after a four-year battle with cancer. She was the wife of Philip B. Parsons Jr.

She was born in Arlington, the daughter of Harold W. and Minnie E. (Downie) Smith. She was raised and attended school in Lexington. Mrs. Parsons majored in bacteriology at Smith College followed by doing research in viral diseases at Yale Medical School and at Rockefeller Institute.

Following her marriage, Mrs. Parsons settled in Winchester, where she was active in a variety of town affairs. In 1980, the moved to Sandwich, N.H., and shortly thereafter acquired a collie dog and taught her self to spin dog hair and become an authority on spinning all manner of exotic fibers as well as wool, silk, and cotton. She then knit these yarns into a variety of items which she sold through the Sandwich Home Industries and craft fairs.

Education played a central role in Mrs. Parsons' life in bringing up her children; teaching general science in the Belmont Public Schools, supporting Smith College as president of the Winchester Smith Club, chairman of the Boston League of Smith Clubs, and president of the New Hampshire Smith Club, acting as chairman of Education for both the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, and teaching spinning to many beginners and advanced students.

For 15 years, she was invited for a week each summer to the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel in Dixville Notch to be a Craftsman in Residence and demonstrate her spinning expertise to interested guests.

In the summer of 1990, Mrs. Parsons and two other Sandwich ladies took 10 Sandwich 4-H girls to England, where they demonstrated the spinning skills she had taught them at the Royal Farm Show. She was also a very active trustee of the Samuel H. Wentworth Library in Sandwich, serving as chairman for a number of years.

Mrs. Parsons and her husband were involved with the Lake Lay Monitoring program. They tested the water in Lake Winnipesaukee near their cottage on Long Island once a week from June to October for 15 years.

In addition to her husband of 53 years, she is survived by two sons, Christopher Parsons of Lawrence, and Jeffrey Parsons of North Ferrisburg, Vt.; a daughter, Elizabeth "Muff" Parsons of North Ferrisburg, Vt.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 17, at the Methodist Church in Sandwich. Following the service there will be a reception in the Tamworth Pavilion at the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, where Mrs. Parsons was a very active trustee for many years. Anyone who spun or knitted items made by Mrs. Parsons, are urged to wear or bring them to the reception.

Her ashes will be interred at a private family ceremony later in the spring.

Clifford G. Hunt, DMD

CARVER - Clifford G. Hunt, DMD, 85, formerly of Lexington, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at The Oaks Nursing Home in New Bedford. He was the husband of Jean M. (MacInnes) Hunt of Marion.

He was born in Somerville, the son of the late Willis and Irma (Haynes) Hunt. Dr. Hunt graduated from Lexington High School in 1935, attended Tufts University Dental School and received his doctor of dental medicine degree from Harvard University Dental School in 1941.

After graduating from Harvard, Dr. Hunt served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

Dr. Hunt practiced as an orthodontist in Lexington for many years before moving to Marion in 1968. He resided in Marion for 18 years and moved to Carver in 1986.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Marion and was a member of the South Carver Lions Club. His hobbies included collecting and restoring antique automobiles.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Paul Hunt of Miami, Fla., Roger Hunt of Carver, and Daniel Hunt of North Wales, Pa.; a daughter Carol Batonick of Mamoronack, N.Y.; a sister, Hazel Hunt of Marion; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, at the First Congregational Church, 28 Main St., Marion.

Barbara A. Robb

Barbara A. Robb, 69, of La Crescent, Minn., a former longtime resident of Lexington, died Saturday, June 7, 2003 in Orlando, Fla.

Mrs. Robb was a resident of Lexington for 64 years before moving to Minnesota 1 1/2 years ago. She was the daughter of Owen and Margaret (James) MacDonald. A graduate of Lexington High School, she worked as an assistant manager at a delicatessen in Bedford and Lexington. She enjoyed trips to Las Vegas and baking.

She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl A. Auld and her husband George of Orlando and Patricia A. Scanlon and her husband Kenneth of La Crescent; a son, David W. Robb and his wife Janet of North Chelmsford; a brother, Charles MacDonald of Lexington and a sister, Marion Rice of California.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 12 at the Douglass Funeral Home in Lexington. Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.

Agnes Parker

ARLINGTON - Agnes Parker, 84, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, a resident of Arlington for 55 years, at the Annemark Nursing Home in Revere. She was the wife of Robert Parker.

She was born in Arlington on Jan. 7, 1919, the daughter of the late John and Catherine (Scannell) Lane. Mrs. Parker graduated from Arlington High School, and attended Lesley, Northeastern, and Wheelock College from 1937 to 1940.

Mrs. Parker was employed by Brighams from 1940-1942. She then worked at the Charlestown Navy Yard during World War II as a welder.

Following the war, Mrs. Parker taught in Watertown at the Parker School.

Mrs. Parker earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Northeastern University in 1958, and a master's in education from Lesley College in 1967.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a brother, Phil Lane of Lexington; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by nine brothers and sisters.

A funeral Mass was celebrated June 17, at St. Agnes Church in Arlington. Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.

Arrangements were under the care of the Keefe Funeral Home, Arlington.

George N. Milona

George N. Milona, 77, died Friday, June 13, 2003, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Evelyn (Antonaros) Milona.

He was born in Chelsea, the son of the late Nicholas and Calliope Milona. He attended Virginia Tech. Mr. Milona also helped in his father's restaurants in Chelsea and Boston. He lived abroad in Japan, Taiwan, and Canada for 15 years.

Mr. Milona served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on landing craft and after a particularly close call, felt lucky to have survived the war.

He was a business executive in the electronics industry.

Mr. Milona was a member of The Massachusetts Lodge, and was an associate member of the Rabboni Lodge, both Masonic orders. He also was a member of the Hellenic Square and Compass Club, and junior vice commander of American Legion Post 324. He served as a board member of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Lexington, and was formerly vice president of the Navy League in Japan.

In addition to his wife of 45 years, he is survived by two sons, N.M. Milona of Lexington, and Michael Milona and his wife Maria in Connecticut; three brothers, Gregory Milona and his wife Stella of Lexington, Gus Milona and his wife Marianne of Medford, and Nick Milona and his wife Paula in Florida; a sister-in-law, Emily Yanakis and her husband John of Lexington; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Arthur Milona and Irene Carpenter; and the brother-in-law of the late Virginia Milona and Peter Carpenter.

A funeral service was held June 17, at St. Nicholas Greek Church in Lexington.

Theresa S. Agri

Theresa S. (Alessio) Agri, 80, of Arlington, formerly of Medford, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at her home after a long illness. She was the wife of Joseph J. Agri.

A longtime Arlington resident, she was a housewife and past president of the Regina Elena Lodge #1709.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Joseph and his wife Sharon of New Hampshire and John and his wife Janis of Medford; a daughter, Janice Floro and her husband Tony of Lexington; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Sonny Alessio of Washington; a sister, Barbara Annand of California and two nephews, Dennis Alessio of Billerica and Paul Alessio of Woburn.

She was sister of the late Dolores Foti.

The funeral was held from the DeVito-O'Donnell Funeral Home, Arlington Heights, on Monday, June 2 followed by a funeral Mass celebrated in St. Jerome's Church. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Hospice, 607 North Ave., Wakefield, MA 01880.
