Frank E. Kuhn

Frank E. Kuhn, 91, a longtime resident of Lexington, died at home on Tuesday, June 3, 2003. He was the husband of the late Ruth G. Kuhn.

Born in Buffalo, N.Y., he graduated from the University of Buffalo with an economics degree and went to work for the Equitable Life Assurance Society. Over the next 44 years he held a variety of posts in the company's home office in New York City and retired in 1976 as a senior vice president.

He was on the faculty of the College of Insurance, a trustee of Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Tarrytown, N.Y. and active in his church and community. He was a veteran of World War II.

After retiring and moving to Lexington, Mr. Kuhn served for 18 years as a volunteer tax counselor and head of the Tax-Aide Program at the Lexington Senior Center. He also was a driver for Meals-on-Wheels for 11 years.

Mr. Kuhn is survived by two daughters, Dorothy K. Reuss of Lexington and Marjory K. Sullivan of Ann Arbor, Mich. and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were private.

Any donations in his memory may be made to the Hancock United Church of Christ in Lexington.

Elaine Curtin

Elaine Paula Curtin of Lexington died June 10, 2003 after a lengthy illness.

A graduate of Lexington High School Class of 1985, she was the daughter of the late Daniel P. Curtin and Eleanor Foley Curtin.

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Dean H. Curtin and Karen R. Keough of Wakefield and her sister and brother-in-law Dianne and John Penney of Gloucester. She is also survived by four nieces and four nephews, Susan Penny and Christina Penny of Boston, Amy Griffin of California, Tara Curtin of Lexington, Matthew Penny of Somerville, Mark Penny of Wilmington, Luke Penny of Acton and Owen Curtin of Somerville.

A private funeral mass was celebrated at St. Brigid's Church in Lexington.

Harriett E. Flannery

Harriett Elizabeth (West) Flannery, 85, formerly of Lincoln and Weston, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Life Care Center in Acton. She was the wife of 47 years of Donald J. Flannery Sr. who died in 1987.

Born in Albany, N.Y. on Nov. 24, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Earle and Mildred (Coburn) West. She attended the Weston schools, graduated in 1934 from Weston High School and in 1936 from the Chamberlayne Junior College in Boston.

A Lincoln resident from 1952 until 1987, she was a longtime active member of the First Parish in Lincoln. She had previously been active as a member of the Weston United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Flannery is survived by her son, Donald J. Flannery Jr. and his wife Mittie Parish Flannery of Lexington; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was the mother of the late Susan E Flannery and sister of the late Thomas C. "Bud" West of Weston.

Funeral services will be private.

Contributions in he memory may be made to Life Care Center of Acton, Activities Fund, 1 Great Road, Acton, MA 01720.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Joseph Dee & Son Funeral Service, Concord.

Albert Pizzi

WALTHAM - Albert Pizzi, 90, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at the Waltham Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Angelamaria (Tortola) Pizzi, to whom he was married for 64 years.

He was born in Cambridge, the son of the late Angelantonio and Mariannina (Gentile) Pizzi. Mr. Pizzi lived in McCurtain, Okla., and Dawson, N.M. as a child, where his father worked in the coal mines.

At the outbreak of World War II, the family returned to Italy, where Mr. Pizzi was trained as a tailor in his uncle's tailor shop in Miranda, Italy. He returned to the United States as a teen-ager, living in Boston's North End. He worked as a tailor in many locations in Boston, including Bonwit Teller and Anderson Little.

At midlife, Mr. Pizzi earned his bachelor's degree from Boston College in 1952, and his master's degree from Boston University in 1955.

Mr. Pizzi was a teacher in the Waltham Public Schools until 1972. Working with his wife, he was the proprietor of Marianne's Variety Store, located on Trapelo Road in Waltham for 15 years.

His favorite pastime was traveling to Italy, South America, Asia and throughout the United States. He maintained lifelong friendships with school friends, teaching colleagues and business associates. He recently resided at the Meadow Green Nursing Home in Waltham with his wife, until her death less than a year ago. There he made many friends with residents and staff.

He is survived by a daughter, Marianne Tortola and her husband Angelo of Lexington; a brother-in-law, James Duchaney of Belmont; two sisters-in-law, Assunta Pizzi and Susan Petrino, both of Belmont; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Antimo Pizzi and Rita Duchaney, and the brother-in-law of the late Frederick Tortola.

A Mass was celebrated April 14, at St. Joseph's Church in Belmont. Interment was in Belmont Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the care of the Brasco and Sons Memorial of Belmont.

Ernest C. Smith

Ernest C. Smith, 92, died Sunday, March 30, 2003. He was the husband of the late Martha C. (Chubb) Smith.

For many years, Mr. Smith owned and operated the Belmont Centre Hardware Store. He previously had been a longtime employee of the Sears Company.

He is survived by two sons, William B. Smith of Lexington, and Richard H. Smith of Foxboro; a daughter, Edith S. Engle and her husband David L. of Belmont; and four grandchildren.

A service in celebration of his life was held April 12, at the Follen Community Church in Lexington.

Arrangements were under the care of the Douglass Funeral Home, Lexington.

Madelyn C. Visalli

BEDFORD - Madelyn C. Visalli, 63, formerly of Lexington, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at her home. She was the wife of Dr. Francis J. Visalli.

She was born in Somerville on June 8, 1939, the daughter of the late Vincent G. and Gladys (Lombardi) DiSilva. Mrs. Visalli received a bachelor's degree in education.

Mrs. Visalli was employed as a elementary school teacher in Lexington school system and Our Lady School in Waltham.

She organized a foster grandparent program at a local nursing home with her fourth grade class.

Mrs. Visalli was a eucharistic minister at Sacred Heart Church in Lexington.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Anthony F. Visalli and his wife Karin; three daughters, Christine M. Wyrsch and her husband Steven, Shelly A. Fowler and her husband Robert, and John F. Leitner and her husband John; a brother, Alexander DiSilva; two sisters, Marie Stocki, and Joan Vrettas; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Dolores MacDonnell.

A Mass was celebrated April 15, at St. Michael's Church in Bedford. Interment was in Westview Cemetery, Lexington.

Bette Wilson

BEVERLY - Bette (Bowe) Wilson, 78, formerly of Lexington, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Beverly Hospital.

She was born in Arlington, the daughter of the late Lewis and N. Vivian (Warren) Bowe.

Mrs. Wilson was employed as an AAA member secretary in Merrimack Valley. She was a licensed broker of life, accident and health, property and casualty and was also employed as a life insurance agent with the John Hancock Life Insurance Company.

She was a member of the order of the Eastern Star in Andover, and formerly the Lexington chairman for the Girl Scout Council.

She is survived by a son, William Wilson III and his wife Robin of Wenham; three daughters, Wendy Gately and her husband William of Barrington, R.I., Patricia Munier of Augusta, Maine, and Dawn Kidd and her husband Peter of Shirley; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late L. Warren Bowe.

A private funeral service was held at the Wenham Cemetery at the request of the family.

Margaret M. Moniz

Margaret M. (Ramsdell) Moniz, 85, of Arlington, died Monday, June 9, 2003, at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington. She was the wife of the late Harold J. Moniz.

She was born in Boston, the daughter of the late George and Winifred (Kelly) Ramsdell. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Moniz is survived by two daughters, Arlene M. Moniz of Lexington and Anne-Marie Callahan of Arlington; two sons, Ronald Moniz of Billerica and Stephen Moniz; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was the mother of the late Karen A. O'Leary.

Funeral services will be held today, June 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Eulalia's Church in Winchester. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.

Memorials may be made in her name to Making Strides for Breast Cancer, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Keefe Funeral Home, Arlington.
