Donna K. Bitler, 55, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at her home. She was the wife of John R. Bitler.

She was born in Washington, Pa., on March 28, 1949, the daughter of Margaret (Smith) Keeling of State College, Pa., and the late Henry Bitler. Mrs. Bitler earned her nursing degree at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Mrs. Bitler was employed as a registered nurse at Core, Inc. in Burlington.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by two daughters, Stephanie L. Bitler of Lexington, and Suzanne M. Abbott and her husband, James W., of Lexington; two brothers, William H. Keeling of State College, Pa., and John R. Keeling of Fredericksburg, Va.; two sisters, Barbara K. Woodruff of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Carol A. Kayla of Waynesburg, Pa.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 20, at St. Brigid's Church in Lexington. Calling hours are from 5 to 9 p.m., tonight, Aug. 19, at the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen St., Lexington. Interment will be in Westview Cemetery, Lexington.

Marjorie (Abrams) Strauss, 76

Marjorie (Abrams) Strauss, 76, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington. She was the wife of Alan J. Strauss.

She was born in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of the late Frank A. and Ethel (Tadman) Abrams.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Edward Strauss and his wife, Barbara, of Oakland, Calif.; two daughters, Ruth Fleischmann and her husband, Jonathan, of Lexington, and Sally Lang and her husband, Joe, of St. Louis, Mo.; and six grandchildren.

She was the sister of the late Shirley Blyman.

A funeral service was held Aug. 16, at Temple Isaiah in Lexington. Interment was in Westview Cemetery, Lexington.

Hallette (Conant) Davis

Hallette (Conant) Davis, formerly of Winchester and Belmont, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004. She was the wife of Frank H. Davis.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Frank H. Davis Jr. and his wife, Kathleen O.; a daughter, Susan D. Malloy; and two granddaughters.

A funeral service was held Aug. 13, at All Saints Episcopal Church in Belmont. Interment was in Mt. Auburn Cemetery.

Josephine L. "Peppi" (Simone) Licciardi, 94
Thursday, August 19, 2004

ARLINGTON - Josephine L. "Peppi" (Simone) Licciardi, 94, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004. She was the wife of the late Edward A. Licciardi.

Mrs. Licciardi owned and operated Lexington Liquor Mart Inc. on Massachusetts Avenue and Bedford Street for 50 years until her retirement in 1997.

She is survived by a son, Edward Cajetan Licciardi of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Lorraine Pieterse of Versailles, France; five grandchildren; a nephew, Richard Wells and three nieces, Frances Hartwell, Anna Rizzutto and Jean Reardon.

Funeral services for the family were private.

Arrangements were under the care of the Brown & Sons Funeral Home, Belmont.

Ingibjorg T. (Thors) Gislason, 80

Ingibjorg T. (Thors) Gislason, 80, formerly of Winchester and New York, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, at Winchester Hospital following a brief illness.

She was born in Iceland in 1924, and was a graduate of Woman's College in Iceland. Her father was former prime minister of Iceland, and her uncle was Iceland ambassador to the United States and the United Nations. She emigrated to the United States, and made her home in Winchester, in 1955. Mrs. Gislason has been a resident of Lexington for the past 29 years.

Mrs. Gislason was employed by Coldwater Seafood Corp. in Scarsdale, N.Y. from 1965 to 1975, and served as vice president in the Everett division from 1975 to 2000.

She is survived by two sons, Thorsteinn Gislason and his wife, Ransey, of Salem, N.H., and Olafur Gislason and his wife, Katherine, of Jamestown, R.I.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Crawford Memorial Methodist Church, corner of Dix and Church streets, Winchester. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours are omitted and interment will be private.

William R. Gilman, 94
Thursday, August 26, 2004

William R. Gilman, 94, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at Mt. Auburn Hospital. He was the husband of the late Agnes (Aitken) Gilman, who died of Alzheimer's in 1991.

He was born in Lowell on Oct. 28, 1909, the son of the late John and Amelia Gilman.

Mr. Gilman dreamed of a life at sea, but moved ashore to raise a family. At the age of 18, he joined the Massachusetts Maritime Academy's Class of 1929. He cruised aboard the sailing ship, "Nantucket," a gunboat of the Civil War period. After graduation, he served as first engineering officer aboard a variety of ships in the Merchant Marine.

In 1935, he met and soon married Agnes Aitken of Malden. Following the birth of his first child in 1936, he came ashore and joined the engineering staff of Travelers Insurance Company in Providence, R.I. He was called to active duty with the Navy two months after Pearl Harbor. While serving as an officer aboard subchasers in the North Atlantic, he lost sight in one eye in an accident and was reassigned to the Boston Navy Yard. Mr. Gilman completed his naval service in 1947, and returned to his career with Travelers. In 1966, he became the engineering manager of the Newark office, from which he retired in 1974.

Wherever they lived, Mr. and Mrs. Gilman participated in local church activities, veterans associations, and art groups. Neighbors, children, and their pets were always welcome at their home. Mr. Gilman cared for his wife around the clock at home, through a series illness for 12 years.

Mr. Gilman spent his final years in Lexington, where he became a familiar sight walking his favorite neighborhood dog, the Tenaglia family's collie named Stella.

He is survived by a son, John; a daughter, Judy; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter; his brother, James; and sister, Blanche.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Lucy F. Kelly, 91
Thursday, August 26, 2004

Lucy F. Kelly, 91, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at her home. She was the wife of the late Robert Kelly.

She was born in Scituate on Feb. 10, 1913, the daughter of the late Charles and Edith (Gould) Erwin.

Mrs. Kelly was employed as an administrative assistant at John Hancock from 1930 to 1975. In her later years, she worked at Doran Farms.

She enjoyed gardening, making hooked rugs, going to yard sales, and making pine cone wreathes.

She is survived by a daughter, Joanne Dabbraccio and her husband, Freddie, in New Hampshire; and a grandniece, Lynn Harris and her husband and family of Lexington.

At Mrs. Kelly's request, graveside services were held Aug. 19, at Westview Cemetery, Lexington.

Mona A. Banios, 87

FAIRLEE, Vt. - Mona A. Banios, 87, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at the Valley View Home for Retired Persons in Fairlee. She was the wife of Philip C. Banios, who died in 1996.

She was born in Post Mills, Vt., on May 19, 1917, the daughter of the late Fred and Clara (Hosmer) Aldrich. She graduated from Bradford Academy in 1935 and then from Lyndon State Teachers College in 1937.

Mrs. Banios taught for a time in Cavendish, Vt. She received her master's degree from Boston University and taught in Montpelier, Vt., and then in Belmont. She then taught in Lexington, where she lived until moving to West Lebanon, N.H., and then Bradford in 1992, and Fairlee in 2001.

She was a member of the Bradford Congregational Church where she belonged to the Women's Fellowship.

Mrs. Banios was very musical and a talented crafter who especially enjoyed quilting, crocheting, rug braiding and crewel embroidery.

She is survived by a son, Philip C. Banios Jr. of Harvard; a daughter, Ann J. "AJ" Kemon of Hartford, Vt.; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 5, at the family cottage in Post Mills, Vt.
