Paul A. Zizzo

ARLINGTON — Paul A. Zizzo, formerly of Cambridge, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004.

He was the son of Deolinda (Rocha) Zizzo and the late Anthony Zizzo.

Mr. Zizzo was employed as a benefits manager for Harvard University.

He was a board member of Harvard University Credit Union and a former senior trust officer of Bank of Boston.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Cynthia Zizzo; an aunt, Constance Mathews; his partner, Stephen Cairns; and the dear friend of Clair Sullivan and Jean Cole.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 19, at the Memorial Church, Harvard University, Harvard Yard, Cambridge.

For those who wish, contributions in Mr. Zizzo’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements were under the care of the Rogers Funeral Home, Cambridge.

James S. Sugden

WINTHROP — James S. Sugden, 52, formerly of Arlington, died by accident on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004.

He was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, the son of Barry Sugden Sr. in California and the late Virginia (Stavely) Sugden.

Mr. Sugden was employed as a salesman in the automotive industry.

He is survived by a brother, Barry Sugden Jr. of Chicago; two sisters, Nancy Newbery Sugden in Wisconsin and Carol Milligan in Massachusetts; seven nieces and nephews; one grandnephew; his best friend and lifelong companion, Elizabeth Sibert of Chelsea; and a father figure to Mary Sibert.

A funeral service was held Aug. 16 at the Keefe Funeral Home in Arlington. Interment was in Newton Cemetery.

John L. Squires
Thursday, August 19, 2004

ARLINGTON — John L. Squires, 64, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born in Boston, the son of Mortimer and Florence Squires.

Mr. Squires served in the U.S. Army. He was a self-employed painter in Arlington for many years.

Mr. Squires was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans in Arlington.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Michael Squires of Medford; a daughter, Karen Connolly of Westminster; four granddaughters; and a brother, William Squires of Melrose.

A funeral was held Aug. 4 from the DeVito Funeral Home in Arlington, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Agnes Church. Interment was private on Aug. 16 at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Maurice Arthur McWhinnie

ARLINGTON — Maurice Arthur McWhinnie of Arlington, formerly of Somerville, died at Lexington Health Care Center on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004. He was 87 years old.

Born in Montreal, Canada, he spent time living in Somerville and has been an Arlington resident for more than 30 years. He is a retired clerk for Registry of Deeds for the city of Cambridge. He was a World War II Army veteran.

Mr. McWhinnie was the husband of Marguerite (Claar) McWhinnie of Arlington, He leaves his sons, Robert McWhinnie of Illinois, James McWhinnie of Florida and Arthur McWhinnie Jr., of Maine; his daughters, Carol McWhinnie of Massachusetts and Paula Marchio of New Hampshire. He was the brother of Daisy LeBlanc of Canada, Dorothy McClain of Florida and Woodrow McWhinnie of Falmouth and Florida. He is survived by eight grandchildren, several great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Mr. McWhinnie was predeceased by seven brothers and sisters.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, Aug. 6 at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the World War II Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 96074, Washington, DC, 20090.

Josephine B. Keefe

ARLINGTON — Joseph B. (Hallett) Keefe, 93, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Hospice House in Reading. She was the wife of the late Francis Keefe, Esq.

She was born in Wollaston. Mrs. Keefe was a longtime resident of Arlington.

Mrs. Keefe was a member of the Winchester Country Club on which she served on many committees. She was on the Board of Directors of the Arlington Boys & Girls Club, a volunteer and member of the auxiliary board of Symmes Hospital in Arlington and a founder of the Arlington High School Girls Club. She was also an organizing committee member for the establishing of Channel 2 and a charter member of Channel 2.

She is survived by a son, Robert D. Keefe Esq. of Winchester; three daughters, Eleanor D. Maskell and her husband, George of Arlington, Carolyn K. Oakes in Ohio and Nancy E. Clarke and her husband, Richard of Winchester; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was also the mother-in-law of the late Nathan Oakes.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 20 in the Chapel of St. Agnes in Arlington. Interment will be private.

Janice S. Cooke

ARLINGTON — Janice S. (Rowe) Cooke, 58, a longtime Arlington resident, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, after a sudden illness.

She was born in Brighton. Mrs. Cooke was employed as an administrative assistant at Lesley University in Cambridge.

She is survived by a son, Richard C. Cooke Jr. and his wife, Michelle of Westwood; a daughter, Christine Fletcher and her husband, Jeffrey of Fitchburg; and five grandchildren. She was the former wife of Richard C. Cooke of Woburn.

A funeral was held Aug. 9 from the DeVito Funeral Home in Arlington, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Eulalia’s Church. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Thomas R. O’Connor Sr.
Thursday, August 19, 2004

CAMBRIDGE — Thomas R. O’Connor Sr., a lifelong resident of Cambridge, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at his home. He wasthe husband of Mildred L. (Crane) O’Connor. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the European Theater as a member of the Fourth Armored Division.

MITCHELL, S.D. — Mary (Graham) Ewing, 76, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minn. She was the wife of Douglas D. Ewing. She was the youngest daughter of Catherine C. Graham of Arlington and the late James Graham.

Aferdita "Rheta" (Lazar) Vasil

ARLINGTON - Aferdita "Rheta" (Lazar) Vasil, formerly of Belmont and South Boston, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. She was the wife of the late Peter S. Vasil.

She was born in Boston on March 17, 1917.

She is survived by two sons, Peter S. Vasil of Belleair, Fla., and Paul E. Vasil and his wife, Marie, of Needham; four daughters, Charlotte A. Westman Pike and her husband, Burton, of Jupiter, Fla., Valerie J. Vasil of Belleair, Fla., Vivian L. Vasil of Boston and Colette Taylor and her husband, Peter, of Arlington; three grandchildren; a sister, Alyce Stavro of Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also the sister of the late James Lazar, Philip Lazar, and Pauline Prift.

A funeral service in celebration of her life was held Dec. 28 at the Albanian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George in South Boston.

Arrangements were under the care of The Brasco Memorial Chapels, Belmont.

Theresa G. (Colbert) O'Connor, 93

CAMBRIDGE - Theresa G. (Colbert) O'Connor, 93, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at the Park Avenue Nursing Home in Arlington. She was the wife of the late Daniel O'Connor.

She was born and raised in Cambridge and had been a lifelong Cambridge resident. Mrs. O'Connor was a graduate of St. John's grammar and high schools, and also attended the Bryant and Stratton Business School.

Mrs. O'Connor was employed as a secretary for the city of Cambridge for more than 35 years before her retirement.

She was an active member of Saint John's Church and a member of the Women's Guild.

She is survived by two sons, Edward O'Connor and his wife, Brenda, of Scituate, and Neil O'Connor in Montana; two daughters, Anne O'Connor of Arlington and Eileen Gillen and her husband, Jack, of Hyde Park; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was also the mother of the late Daniel O'Connor, and the sister of the late Margaret Colbert.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 27 at St. John's Church in Cambridge. Interment was in Cambridge Cemetery.
