Stella M. Goyetche

Funeral services will be held on Friday November 3, 2006 for Mrs. Stella M. Goyetche. She had been a Watertown resident for the past 52 years. She died on Tuesday October 31, 2006 at her residence at the age of 92.
Stella was born Stella Marie Harvey on September 1, 1914. She was the second born of 10 children raised in the loving home of Prudent and Madeline Harvey on the Madeleine Islands in the heart of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, Quebec. Stella often marveled that though her brothers and sisters all had very different personalities, they all got along. Stella told wonderful stories about life on the Islands - about walking 4 miles to and from Church – including twice on Sundays! When people shuddered to hear this, Stella assured them that she traveled in a mob of siblings and cousins and friends and that these excursions were occasions for flirting with boys and having fun. She told us she got to ride in a sleigh to Church in the winter
Stella had left the Madeleine Islands to work but returned to Madeleine Islands upon her mother’s untimely illness. Her mother soon died and Stella spent the next 5 years helping to raise the youngest of her brothers and sisters. It is a beautiful gift that in Stella’s last 2 weeks on earth she was lovingly tended to by the same sister and brother, Helene and Marc, whom she helped raise 65 years ago.
While home, Stella found a sweetheart whom she accompanied to the boat that took him to World War II. She received a letter from him asking her to marry him. Sadly he died in the war. Stella made her way to Boston, staying with her Aunt as she sought work.
In May of 1947, Stella met a handsome and gregarious Cape Bretoner named Henry Elmer Goyetche, back from the war. In September 1947, they married! They moved into a Brownstone on Lawrence Street in Boston into which they took boarders, many of whom were family and friends from Canada establishing roots in the United States. Shortly after the birth of their third child, they moved to Watertown - to the house where Stella lived for the rest of her life.
Stella and Elmer were a team. Stella noted that the house they had moved into was designed in such a way that anyone coming to the front door would see what they were having for breakfast in the kitchen. With Stella as designer and Elmer as carpenter, they tore down walls and created new rooms that became the house at 10 Frank Street as we know it. They also built a cottage together from scratch. She often talked about how she and Elmer discussed things and worked together to solve problems.
Stella worked at Perkins School for the Blind for over 17 years and often said after hearing us complain about our jobs, that she never ever minded going to work. That seems extraordinary. She had a strong work ethic. She was on time and she worked hard. She was well loved by staff and she got along with everyone.
She loved her kids, Richard, Jeannette, Paul and Michael. Stories she told about her children could make her cry. And laugh of course.
Stella was a wonderful seamstress, a maker of patterns and clothes and quilts. She enjoyed the challenge of projects. She prided herself on exquisite execution. She never bragged about her work. She didn’t have to, it spoke for itself.
In retirement, Stella traveled to California for extended stays to be with Jeannette when she and husband Jerry had their two children, first Lucas and 3 years later, Geena. Stella was sad they lived so far away and she cherished the things that Lucas and Geena wrote and made for her.
In the last 10 years, Stella lost Elmer and then Richard, which broke her heart. She lost brothers and sisters and cousins. She lost her physical abilities. She changed from a very active person who walked back and forth to Watertown Square, the mall, and Church to a person who was housebound. She lamented these changes for sure but she was also completely engaged in figuring out how to be as self sufficient as possible. She really enjoyed doing the laundry even after it had become a challenge since it was located in the basement. Stella figured out a way get the clothes and herself up and down the stairs, but warned against telling Michael because he worried when she did stuff like that. She engaged in other “subversive” housecleaning, which she said she could only do when she was alone in the house because if others were present, they wouldn’t let her wash her own dishes or clean her own kitchen. When Paul got her a tray for her walker, it opened up a whole new world for transporting goods from one room to the next. What a privilege to be privy to this indefatigable spirit!
Her humor was fast and surprising. She was generous with her memories and stories. You could tell a story was coming when she looked off and her face suddenly broke into a smile. She also loved listening to stories told by her beloved neighbor Kitty. She listened raptly to the stories of her friend Judy’s shocking past. Stella didn’t skip a beat, she kept up and she asked questions.
Stella was so grateful for her children. She often said that she could never have stayed home in her old age if it hadn’t been for Paul. She beamed to hear Michael proclaim her cooking, not to mention her innate common sense and intelligence, which he expounded imitating her accent and wonderful way with words. Stella worried that she should go to the hospital so as not to be a burden. But when Jeannette arrived, Stella surrendered to Jeannette’s loving care - not easy for such an independent person but made possible because the caregiver was Jeannette.
Stella was aided at home by the services and loving care given by the Hospice of the Good Shepard.
In her 92 years, Stella touched the lives of many people. We will miss her more than we can say. She is in our hearts and in our bones. We are truly blessed to have known her.
Funeral services will be held from the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home in Watertown Square at 6 Riverside St. (corner of No. Beacon St.) Watertown on Friday at 8:00 A.M. followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00 O’Clock in the Sacred Heart Church 770 Mt. Auburn St. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment Ridgelawn Cemetery. Visiting hours Thursday 5-8 PM.

Contributions made in Stella’s memory to the charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.

Grace M. Munroe

Funeral Services will be held on Monday October 23, 2006 for Mrs. Grace M. Munroe. Mrs. Munroe was born in Newton, a daughter of the late Fred and Elizabeth (Byrne) McCrudden. She grew up in Newton, graduating from Our Lady’s High School in Newton. Mrs. Munroe had been a Watertown resident for over 65 years. She worked for many years at the M.I.T. Lincoln Labs. She died on Friday October 20, 2006 at the Kindred Hospital in Brighton at the age of 91.

She was the wife of the late Malcolm C. Munroe and sister of the late Edward McCrudden, Mary Smith, Elizabeth Napoli & Frederick McCrudden. She is also survived and loved by many nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held from the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home in WATERTOWN SQUARE at 6 Riverside St. (cnr. of No. Beacon St.) Watertown on Monday at 8:00 A.M. followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00 O’Clock in the Church of St. Patrick’s 212 Main St. Watertown.
